Abstract

International audience; The textile and clothing industry is the first manufacture sector in Tunisia in terms of employment and number of enterprises. It generates large volumes of textile dyeing wastewater (TDWW) containing high concentrations of saline, alkaline, and recalcitrant pollutants that could fuel tenacious and resilient electrochemically active microorganisms in bioanodes of bioelectrochemical systems. In this study, a designed hybrid bacterial halothermotolerant bioanode incorporating indigenous and exogenous bacteria from both hypersaline sediment of Chott El Djerid (HSCE) and TDWW is proposed for simultaneous treatment of real TDWW and anodic current generation under high salinity. For the proposed halothermotolerant bioanodes, electrical current production, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency, and bacterial community dynamics were monitored. All the experiments of halothermotolerant bioanode formation have been conducted on 6 cm2 carbon felt electrodes polarized at −0.1 V/SCE and inoculated with 80% of TDWW and 20% of HSCE for 17 days at 45°C. A reproducible current production of about 12.5 ± 0.2 A/m2 and a total of 91 ± 3% of COD removal efficiency were experimentally validated. Metagenomic analysis demonstrated significant differences in bacterial diversity mainly at species level between anodic biofilms incorporating allochthonous and autochthonous bacteria and anodic biofilm containing only autochthonous bacteria as a control. Therefore, we concluded that these results provide for the first time a new noteworthy alternative for achieving treatment and recover energy, in the form of a high electric current, from real saline TDWW.

Abstract

International audience; Both multi-criteria recommendation and context-aware recommendation are well addressed in previous research but separately in most of existing work. In this paper, we aim to contribute to the under-explored research problem which consists in tailoring the multi-criteria rating predictions to users involved in specific contexts. We investigate the application of simultaneous clustering based on the application of a spectral partitioning graph method over situational contexts in the one hand and criteria in the other hand. Besides, we conjecture that even with similar criteria-related ratings, the importance of criteria might differ among users. This idea leads us to use prioritized aggregation operators as means of multi-criteria rating aggregations. Our experimental results on a real-world dataset show the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract

International audience; The increasing volume of data generated by earth observation programs such as Copernicus, NOAA, and NASA Earth Data, is overwhelming. Although these programs are very costly, data usage remains limited due to lack of interoperability and data linking. In fact, multi-source and heterogeneous data exploitation could be significantly improved in different domains especially in the natural disaster prediction one. To deal with this issue, we introduce the PREDICAT project that aims at providing a semantic service-oriented platform to PREDIct natural CATastrophes. The PREDICAT platform considers (1) data access based on web service technology; (2) ontology-based interoperability for the environmental monitoring domain; (3) data integration and linking via big data techniques; (4) a prediction approach based on semantic machine learning mechanisms. The focus in this paper is to provide an overview of the PREDICAT platform architecture. A scenario explaining the operation of the platform is presented based on data provided by our collaborators, including the international intergovernmental Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS).

Abstract

International audience; Multi-source observed data are generally characterized by their syntactic, structural and semantic heterogeneities. A key challenge is the semantic interoperability of these data. In this context, we propose an ontology-based system that supports environmental monitoring. Our contributions could be resumed around 1) the construction of an ontology which allows to represent the knowledge and reuse it in a real-world way, 2) the guarantee of the semantic interoperability of ontological modules since the proposed ontology is based on the upper level ontology Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) 3) the modularity of the proposed ontology in order to facilitate its reuse and evolution. The proposed ontology has been implemented and evaluated using quality metrics. We also present a real use case study that demonstrates how the proposed ontology allows implicit knowledge generation.

Abstract

International audience; In the healthcare domain, Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) has emerged as a vital technology that is capable of providing better methods to diagnose various hazardous diseases. The CANet projet is a project that proposes alternative monitoring solutions. This paper studies the possibility of transmitting different types of information through an IEEE 802.15.4 MAC layer that not supports the transmission of heterogeneous information. We have proposed an extension to the MAC layer which makes possible the transmission of various information types. This solution designed by "diffrentiation layer" uses a purge function to ensure the use of CAP and CFP by the same node in the same superframe and allows the differentiation between several information. Our results show that our solution is reliable under worst-case.

Abstract

International audience; For classical CSPs, the absence of broken triangles on a pair of values allows the merging of these values without changing the satisfiability of the instance, giving experimentally verified reduction in search time. We generalise the notion of broken triangles to VCSPs to obtain a tractable value-merging rule which preserves the cost of a solution. We then strengthen this value merging rule by using soft arc consistency to remove soft broken triangles and we show that the combined rule generalises known notions of domain value substitutability and interchangeability. Unfortunately the combined rules are no longer tractable to apply, but can still have applications as heuristics for reducing the search space. Finally we consider the generalisation of another value-elimination rule for CSPs to binary VCSPs. This new rule properly generalises neighbourhood substitutability and so we expect it will also have practical applications.

Abstract

International audience; Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming an attractive solution for road traffic monitoring because of their mobility, low cost, and broad view range. Up to now, existing traffic monitoring systems based on UAVs only use one UAV with fixed trajectory to extract information about vehicles. In this paper, we propose a road traffic monitoring system using multiple UAVs. We develop a method to generate adaptive UAVs trajectories, which is based on the tracking of moving points in the UAV field of view. Also we generate UAVs trajectories using mobility models that are usually used to model vehicles mobility. UAVs monitor the traffic on a city road, they are responsible for collecting and sending, in real time, vehicle information to a traffic processing center for traffic regulation purposes. We show that the performance of our system is better than the performance of the fixed UAV trajectory traffic monitoring system in terms of coverage rates and events detection rates.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we present a solution for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) energy saving problem while ensuring a continuous tracking of a mobile target. Our tracking algorithm is based on three zones, and according to the target placement in those zones, the UAV will do a specific type of actions. We proposed an additional zone called the authorized zone. In this zone, the UAV keeps a fixed velocity and a fixed altitude, and this contributes to the limitation of the energy consumption while also maintaining a minimal altitude. We also proposed an adapted criterion which considers the velocity, altitude and acceleration changes to evaluate the energy consumption. The idea here is to limit the number of the UAV adjustments to reduce the energy consumption and still keeping the target in its camera field of view.

Abstract

International audience; With the growing number of users and the huge amount of information in dynamic social networks, contextualizing community detection has been a challenging task. Thus, modeling these social networks is a key issue for the process of contextualized community detection. In this work, we propose a temporal multiplex information graph-based model to represent dynamic social networks: we consider simultaneously the social network dynamicity, its structure (different social connections) and various members’ profiles so as to calculate similarities between “nodes” in each specific context. Finally a comparative study on a real social network shows the efficiency of our approach and illustrates practical uses.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we address the problem of QoS support in an heterogeneous multi-rate wireless mesh network. We propose a new routing metric that provides information about link quality, based on PHY and MAC characteristics, including the link availability, the loss rate and the available bandwidth. This metric allows to apprehend inter-flow interferences and avoid bottleneck formation by balancing traffic load on the links. Based on the conflict graph model and calculation of maximal cliques, we define a method to estimate the available bandwidth of a path which considers, in addition, intra-flow interferences. Finally, we propose a routing protocol that supports this metric and we study by simulation its performances compared to different existing routing metrics and protocols. The results revealed the ability of our protocol (LARM) to support the network scalability as well as its ability to choose routes with high throughput and limited delay, thus, better delivery of data traffic.

Abstract

In this paper we study, through theoretical analysis and simulation, the impact of beacon order (BO) and superframe order (SO) parameters of IEEE 802.15.4 on the networks performance and we investigate their optimal values for different classes of traffic. The traffic is dimensioned according to the requirements of the CANet project in which a cane becomes a mean of communication and a surveillance system embedding several sensors to monitor the elderly health and environment(voice, pressure, temperature, etc.). The cane's sensors impose different QoS constraints. Depending on the expected throughput, a sensor's traffic will fall within one of three classes that we defined. Therefore, in order to ease the understanding of our optimisation, we introduce a classification scheme which applies to the existing quality of service algorithms. We derive by theoretical study the optimal values of BO and SO that should be used to fit each traffic class QoS requirements and we validate our results by simulation.

Abstract

International audience; Generally, various models can be used to describe a given application domain on different aspects and thus give rise to several views. To have a complete view of the application domain, heterogeneous models need to be unified, which is a hard task to do. To tackle this problem, we have proposed a method to relate partial models without combining them in a single model. In our approach, partial models are organized as a network of models through a virtual global model called M1C (Model of correspondences between models) which conforms to a ubiquitous language based on a Meta-Model of Correspondences (MMC). This paper presents an application of our method to an “Emergency Department” case study. It has been performed as a collaborative process involving model designers and a supervisor. The focus is put on the building of the M1C model from 3 partial models.

Abstract

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to make a scientific contribution to web information retrieval (IR).Design/methodology/approachA multiagent system for web IR is proposed based on new technologies: Hierarchical Small‐Worlds (HSW) and Possibilistic Networks (PN). This system is based on a possibilistic qualitative approach which extends the quantitative one.FindingsThe paper finds that the relevance of the order of documents changes while passing from a profile to another. Even if the selected terms tend to select the relevant document, these terms are not the most frequent of the document. This criterion shows the asset of the qualitative approach of the SARIPOD system in the selection of relevant documents. The insertion of the factors of preference between query terms in the calculations of the possibility and the necessity consists in increasing the scores of possibilistic relevance of the documents containing these terms with an aim of penalizing the scores of relevance of the documents not containing them. The penalization and the increase in the scores are proportional to the capacity of the terms to discriminate between the documents of the collection.Research limitations/implicationsIt is planned to extend the tests of the SARIPOD system to other grammatical categories, like refining the approach for the substantives by considering for example, the verbal occurrences in names definitions, etc. Also, it is planned to carry out finer measurements of the performances of SARIPOD system by extending the tests with other types of web documents.Practical implicationsThe system can be useful to help research students find their relevant scientific papers. It must be located in the document server of any research laboratory.Originality/valueThe paper presents SARIPOD, a new qualitative possibilistic model for web IR using multiagent system.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we present an overview of IEEE 802.15.4 and 802.15.6 standards. Thereafter, in view of their various strengths and many similarities, we study the possibility of using one of these two norms to implement the body area network (WBAN) of CANet (an innovative ehealth project) scenario according to the nature of the studied sensors. To do so, we considered an hybrid differentiation layer, previously proposed, based on 802.15.4 and we made a classification of CANet ehealth sensors based on IEEE 802.15.6 native superframe periods and priority and service differentiation systems. Each choice between them has its advantages and disadvantages. Thus, it will be necessary to analyse in detail the simulation and prototyping results of 802.15.4 and 802.15.6 norms once implemented in CANet context in order to decide about the standard providing the optimal QoS.

Abstract

International audience; In the recent few years, Wireless Body Area networks (WBANs) showed what can be done remotely to greatly improve healthcare systems and facilitate the life to elderly. One of the recent ehealth projects is CANet which aims at embedding a WBAN into a cane to monitor elderly/patients. Our main goal in this paper is to evaluate the performances of the emerging standard IEEE 802.15.6 when applied on different sensors from CANet eHealth project. At this end, we defined a small scenario extracted from CANet, and we assigned IEEE 802.15.6 priorities to the selected cane sensors according to their inherent characteristics. We considered further the mandatory RAP period of IEEE 802.15.6 superframe under the beacon period with superframes mode since it supports both normal and urgent traffic. Our results showed that the contention access behavior of this considered model of simulation depends on several constraints (including the nature of the studied application and the traffic types and frequency). This would be necessarily taken into account to get the most advantage of all features offered by WBANs standard IEEE 802.15.6. Abstract

International audience; In this paper we study through simulations the impact of PHY/MAC protocols on higher layers. In a comparative way, we investigate the effectiveness of some protocols when they coexist on a wireless mesh network environment. Results show that PHY/MAC parameters have an important impact on routing performances. Based on these results, we propose two tra c-aware routing metrics based on link availability. The information about the link availability/occupancy is picked up from lower layers using a cross-layer approach. The rst metric is load-sensitive and aims to balance the tra c load according to the availability of a link to support additional ows. The second metric reproduces better the capacity of a link since it is based on its residual bandwidth. Using several real experiments, we have shown that our proposals can accurately determine better paths in terms of throughput and delay. Our experiments are carried out into an heterogeneous IEEE 802.11n based network running with OLSR routing protocol.

Abstract

Sl-ERF.B.3 (Solanum lycopersicum ethylene response factor B.3)gene encodes for a tomato transcription factor of the ERF (ethylene responsive factor) family. Our results of real-time RT-PCR showed thatSl-ERF.B.3is an abiotic stress responsive gene, which is induced by cold, heat, and flooding, but downregulated by salinity and drought. To get more insight into the role ofSl-ERF.B.3in plant response to separate salinity and cold, a comparative study between wild type and twoSl-ERF.B.3antisense transgenic tomato lines was achieved. Compared with wild type,Sl-ERF.B.3antisense transgenic plants exhibited a salt stress dependent growth inhibition. This inhibition was significantly enhanced in shoots but reduced in roots, leading to an increased root to shoot ratio. Furthermore, the cold stress essay clearly revealed that introducing antisenseSl-ERF.B.3in transgenic tomato plants reduces their cell injury and enhances their tolerance against 14 d of cold stress. All these results suggest thatSl-ERF.B.3gene is involved in plant response to abiotic stresses and may play a role in the layout of stress symptoms under cold stress and in growth regulation under salinity.

Abstract

International audience; Satellite communications can provide fourth generation (4G) networks with large-scale coverage. However, their integration to 4G is challenging because satellite networks have not been designed with handover in mind. The setup of satellite links takes time, and so, handovers must be anticipated long before. This paper proposes a generic scheme based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 802.21 standard to optimize handover and resource management in hybrid satellite-terrestrial networks. Our solution, namely optimized handover and resource management (OHRM), uses the terrestrial interface to prepare handover, which greatly speeds up the establishment of the satellite link. We propose two mechanisms to minimize the waste of bandwidth due to wrong handover predictions. First, we leverage the support of 802.21 in the terrestrial access network to shorten the path of the signaling messages towards the satellite resource manager. Second, we cancel the restoration of the satellite resources when the terrestrial link rolls back. We use OHRM to interconnect a digital video broadcasting and a wireless 4G terrestrial network. However for the simulation tool, we use a WiMAX as the terrestrial technology to illustrate the schemes. The simulation results show that OHRM minimizes the handover delay and the signaling overhead in the terrestrial and satellite networks.

The considered metrics include hop-count, ETX and ETT. The network performances are evaluated in an indoor testbed formed by heterogeneous MIMO devices. A part of our tests was about the impact of 802.11n features on the network performances showing the importance of lower layers consideration. Our measurements point out the shortcoming of each metric and eventual optimizations towards a more efficient routing. Experimental results show that OLSRETT outperforms OLSR-ETX and OLSR-hopcount significantly in terms of packet loss, end-to-end delay, and efficiency.

Abstract

International audience; Current routing mechanisms proposed for adhoc networks still feasibly applied in Wireless Mesh Networks given their similarities. Many researchers have conducted numerous simulations for comparing the performances of these routing protocols under various conditions and constraints. Most made comparisons are not aware of PHY/MAC layers and their impact on routing performances. In this paper we study through simulations the impact of PHY/MAC protocols on higher layers. The considered protocols include three propagation models, ie., FreeSpace, TwoRayGround and Shadowing, three different PHY/MAC protocols specified IEEE 802.11 standards namely, 802.11b, 802.11s and 802.11n, and finally three routing protocols, ie., AODV, OLSR and HWMP. In a comparative way, we investigate the effectiveness of these protocols when they coexist on a wireless mesh network environment. Our results show that the routing strategy can significantly impact the network performance only if it is strongly linked to the characteristics of the lower layers.

Abstract

Grid systems are complex computational organizations made of several interacting components evolving in an unpredictable and dynamic environment. In such context, scheduling is a key component and should be adaptive to face the numerous disturbances of the grid while guaranteeing its robustness and efficiency. In this context, much work remains at low-level focusing on the scheduling component taken individually. However, thinking the scheduling adaptiveness at a macro level with an organizational view, through its interactions with the other components, is also important. Following this view, in this paper we model a grid system as an agent-based organization and scheduling as a cooperative activity. Indeed, agent technology provides high level organizational concepts (groups, roles, commitments, interaction protocols) to structure, coordinate and ease the adaptation of distributed systems efficiently. More precisely, we make the following contributions. We provide a grid conceptual model that identifies the concepts and entities involved in the cooperative scheduling activity. This model is then used to define a typology of adaptation including perturbing events and actions to undertake in order to adapt. Then, we provide an organizational model, based on the Agent Group Role (AGR) meta-model of Freber, to support an adaptive scheduling at the organizational level. Finally, a simulator and an experimental evaluation have been realized to demonstrate the feasibility of our approach.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we explore several statistical methods to find solutions to the problem of query translation ambiguity. Indeed, we propose and compare a new possibilistic approach for query translation derived from a probabilistic one, by applying a classical probability-possibility transformation of probability distributions, which introduces a certain tolerance in the selection of word translations. Finally, the best words are selected based on a similarity measure. The experiments are performed on CLEF-2003 French-English CLIR collection, which allowed us to test the effectiveness of the possibilistic approach.

Abstract

Information retrieval applications are essential tools to manage the huge amount of information in the Web. Ontologies have great importance in these applications. The idea here is that several data belonging to a domain of interest are represented and related semantically in the ontology, which can help to navigate, manage and reuse these data. Despite of the growing need of ontology, only few works were interested in Arabic language. Indeed, arabic texts are highly ambiguous, especially when diacritics are absent. Besides, existent works does not cover all the types of se-mantic relations, which are useful to structure Arabic ontol-ogies. A lot of work has been done on cooccurrence- based techniques, which lead to over-generation. In this paper, we propose a new approach for Arabic se-mantic relation extraction. We use vocalized texts to reduce ambiguities and propose a new distributional approach for similarity calculus, which is compared to cooccurrence. We discuss our contribution through experimental results and propose some perspectives for future research.

National audience; L'évolution de la technologie au niveau des composants électroniques et informatiques a permis la naissance de plusieurs projets comme CANet qui a comme but l'amélioration des conditions de vie, particulièrement pour les personnes âgées. Ce projet permet aux personnes âgées de conserver les mêmes conditions de vie, tout en surveillant leur état de santé sans les déranger. Une des fonctionnalités de CANet est de dialoguer oralement avec une personne via sa canne de marche en utilisant un lien sans fil. Dans ce papier, nous étudions le meilleur codec qui doit être utilisé avec la norme IEEE 802.15.4.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents two novel metrics, Link Occupancy aware routing Metric (LOM) and Residual Link Capacity based routing metric with Interference Consideration (RLCIC), for accurately finding high-throughput paths in multihop wireless mesh networks. The first metric is load-sensitive and aims to balance the traffic load according to the availability of a link to support additional flows. The second metric reproduces better the capacity of a link since it is based on its residual bandwidth. It captures accurately the available path bandwidth information when considering both the intra-flow and the interflow interferences. Using several real experiments carried out into an heterogeneous IEEE 802.11n based network running with OLSR routing protocol, we have shown that our first proposal can accurately determine better paths in terms of throughput and delay, thereby significantly outperforming the other existing metrics. The consistency of the second metric RLCIC is proved formally based on notions of graph theory.

Abstract

International audience; This paper investigates the design of effective routing metrics in the purpose of network resources optimization and the satisfaction of users QoS requirements. Using several real experiments, we point out the shortcoming of the Expected Transmission Count (ETX) metric for eventual optimizations towards a more efficient routing. Experiments were carried out into an heterogeneous IEEE 802.11n based network running with OLSR routing protocol and have shown that ETX presents several shortcoming resulting in inaccurate estimation of the link quality and then of the routing decision. This paper presents improvements of the ETX metric based on link availibility for accurately finding high-throughput paths in multihop wireless mesh networks.

Abstract

International audience; The tremendous and rapid development in sensors technology allowed their application in various fields requiring monitoring, such as, transportations, rare species surveillance, agriculture, military activities, medical field, etc. Due to their intrinsic constraints and limitations, several dedicated MAC protocols have been designed for wireless sensor networks and whose main objectives are bandwidth optimization while keeping very low energy consumption. One of the newest proposals is ANT which is emerging as a widely used MAC protocol for wellness and sports sensor devices. In this paper, we give a comprehensive overview of ANT/ANT+ and a comparison between ANT and two established standards: Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and 802.15.4/4a. We detail also some practical experiments we conducted to evaluate some characteristics of ANT.
