Marine Isotope Stage 5 deposits have been reported on many tropical Pacific islands. This paper presents a database compiled through the review of MIS 5e (last interglacial – LIG) coral reef records from islands belonging to French Polynesia (Anaa, Niau, Makatea, Moruroa, Takapoto, Bora Bora), the Hawaiian Islands (Oahu, Lanai, Midway Atoll), Tuvalu, Kiribati (Christmas Island, Tarawa), the Cook Islands (Mangaia, Atiu, Mitiaro, Mauke, Pukapuka, Rakahanga, Rarotonga), Tonga, Samoa, the Federal States of Micronesia, the Mariana Islands, the Marshall Islands (Enewetak, Bikini), New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji and Niue. Studies reporting other sea-level indicators dated to other Pleistocene interglacials and Holocene sea-level indicators were not inserted in the database but are included in this data description paper for completeness. Overall, about 300 studies concerning Pleistocene and Holocene sea-level indicators have been reviewed, and finally 163 age data points and 94 relative sea-level (RSL) data points from 38 studies on the MIS 5e have been inserted in the database. An additional 155 age data points have been reviewed; i.e. the tropical Pacific islands database contains 318 age data points. The main sea-level indicators include emerged coral reef terraces, but also reef units recovered in drill cores from a few islands, thus reflecting the diversity of tectonic settings and sampling approaches. Future research should be directed towards better constrained RSL reconstructions, including more precise chronological data, more accurate elevation measurements and a better refinement of the palaeo-water-depth significance of coralgal assemblages. Detrital 10Be from continental river sands or submarine sediments has been extensively used to determine the average long-term denudation rates of terrestrial catchments, based on the assumption that the rate of cosmogenic nuclide production by the interaction of source rocks with cosmic radiation balances out the loss of these nuclides by surface denudation. However, the 10Be signal recorded in sediments may be affected at the source by the response time of mountainous catchments to high-frequency forcings. In addition, transient sediment storage in piedmonts, alluvial plains and lakes or near the coast may also induce a difference between the erosive signal and its record in the sedimentary sink. Consequently, a significant part of the signal recorded in shallow-water sediments can be lost, as deep marine sediments may simultaneously record a signal coming from newly eroded source rocks along with one coming from the destabilization of previously deposited sediments. In this paper, we use the landscape evolution model Badlands to simulate erosion, deposition and detrital 10Be transfer from a source-to-sink sedimentary system (the Var River catchment, southern French Alps) over the last 100 kyr. We first compare model-based denudation rates with the ones that would be extracted from the 10Be record of local continental sediments (equivalent to river sands) and from sediments deposited offshore over time in order to examine if this record provides an accurate estimate of continental denudation rates. Then, we examine which conditions (precipitation rate, flexure, ice cover) satisfy published measured river incision rates and 10Be concentration in submarine sediments. Our results, based on the Var catchment cosmic ray exposure dating and modelling indicate that, while river sands do accurately estimate the average denudation rate of continental catchments, this is much less the case for deep submarine sediments. We find that deep-sea sediments have a different and often much smoother 10Be signature than continental ones and record a significant time lag with respect to imposed precipitation rate changes, representing the geomorphological response of the margin. A model which allows us to fit both measured 10Be concentration in marine sediments and river incision rates on land involves an increase in precipitation rates from 0.3 to 0.7 m yr−1 after 20 ka, suggesting more intense precipitation starting at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum.

International audience; The terminal migration of Homo erectus in Southeast Asia during Early Pleistocene is cardinal to our comprehension of the evolution of the genus Homo. However, the limited consideration of the rapidly changing physical environment, together with controversial ages of hominin bearing sites, make it challenging to secure the necessary robust timeline. Here, we reappraise the first appearance datum of Javanese H. erectus by adding to a compilation of earlier estimates the most reliable age constraints based on cosmogenic nuclides 10 Be and 26 Al produced in situ. We find that H. erectus reached Java and dwelled at Sangiran, Java, at least ⇠1.4 Ma ago and more probably around 1.8 Ma. Using this age as a baseline, we develop a probabilistic approach to reconstruct their dispersal routes, coupling ecological movement simulations to landscape evolution models. We demonstrate that the hospitable terra firma conditions of Sundaland facilitated the prior dispersal of hominins to the edge of Java, where they conversely could not settle until the Javanese archipelago emerged from the sea and connected to Sundaland. We estimate a characteristic dispersal time of H. erectus across Sundaland of a few tens to hundreds kyrs, indicating that changes in their physical environment, whether climatic or physiographic, cannot be ignored. Our comprehensive reconstruction method to unravel the peopling timeline of SE Asia provides a novel framework to evaluate the evolution of early humans.

Sundaland, the inundated shelf separating Java, Sumatra and Borneo from the Malay Peninsula, is of exceptional interest to biogeographers for its species richness and its position at the junction between the Australasian and Indomalay biogeographic provinces. Owing to its low elevation and relief, its physiography is contingent on relative sea-level change, which drove Quaternary species burst in response to flooding episodes. New findings show that the region was predominantly terrestrial during the Late Pleistocene requiring a reassessment of the drivers of its recent biodiversity history. Here we show that physiographic changes have modified the regional connectivity network and remodelled the pathways of species dispersal. From combined landscape evolution and connectivity models, we found four phases of drainage reorganisation and river captures. These changes have fragmented the environment into multiple habitats connected by migratory corridors that cover 8% of the exposed shelf and stretch across the biogeographic provinces. Our results support the theory that rapidly evolving physiography could foster Quaternary biodiversification across Southeast Asia. Physiographic changes such as river catchment drainage reorganisations played an important role in Quaternary species diversification in Sundaland, Southeast Asia, according to simulations using combined landscape evolution and connectivity models.

Mature orogenic plateaux grow in response to the lateral redistribution of plateau material, driven by gravitational potential energy, from the thick plateau crust toward the thinner foreland crust. Folding and thrusting in the shallow crust as well as flow of weak deep crust toward the foreland result in plateau growth. The balance between plateau growth processes, including gravitational collapse of the orogenic crust, and the resistance to plateau propagation controls the position of plateau margins. Toward the end of orogenic plateau development, plateau margins are the loci of steep topographic gradients, where erosional processes can be aggressive. The margins also represent the transition between thick crust and thin/weak lithosphere beneath the plateau, and thinner crust and strong/thick lithosphere below the foreland.The juxtaposition of thick and thin lithosphere favors strain localization along plateau margins, where thick lithosphere may partially subduct, or where strike-slip systems, such as the Altyn Tagh region of northern Tibet, develop. In either case, it is likely that the deep, flowing, partially molten crust will sample and entrain high-P (HP) metamorphic rocks such as granulite and eclogite. In the case of lithospheric strike-slip systems, crustal thickening in transpressional domains may lead to HP metamorphism, and crustal thinning in transtensional domains may lead to rapid exhumation of the deep crust, particularly where pull-apart structures in the shallow-crust allow the upward flow and emplacement of migmatite domes. For example, the Montagne Noire dome (French Massif Central) formed at the southern margin of the Variscan orogen in the late Carboniferous (315-295 Ma). This dome is filled with Variscan migmatite containing eclogite fragments that were sampled near Moho depths and entrained in the flowing partially molten crust; eclogitization and early crystallization of melt were coeval. In this example, the redistribution of mass and heat across the plateau margin, including the exhumation of near-Moho rocks, stabilized the crust and marked the end of orogeny.

Migmatite domes are common structures in orogens, and in some cases are comprised of deeply-sourced crust that experienced lateral and subsequent vertical flow, with ultimate emplacement in the mid/upper crust. The record of the deep-crustal history survives in layers and lenses of refractory rock types within the dominant quartzofeldspathic gneiss. These deep-crustal relics are typically the best archives of pressure-temperature-time-deformation conditions of crustal flow, although it can be difficult to extract information about the duration of deep-crustal residence – such as might accompany lateral flow of deep-crust – because intracrystalline diffusion at protracted high temperatures may erase much of the history and/or minerals may record only the timing of final emplacement and cooling. One possible indicator of deep-crustal history is the extent of recrystallization of zircon that experienced eclogite-facies conditions; the conditions of zircon growth/recrystallization are indicated by REE abundance and results of Ti-in-zircon thermometry. For example, in the eclogite-bearing Montagne Noire migmatite dome of the southern French Massif Central, zircon in eclogite from the core of the dome has been extensively recrystallized under eclogite-facies conditions. In contrast, zircon in eclogite from the margin of the dome experienced very little recrystallization and largely consists of inherited (magmatic) cores with very thin (

(IF 3.60; Q1); International audience; Landscape adjustment to tectonic, lithologic and climatic forcing leads to drainage reorganization and migration of divides. The respective contribution of these forcings, especially on carbonate landscapes is not well defined. Here, we have addressed this issue by combining field observations, satellite image interpretation and digital elevation model (DEM) quantitative analysis to assess drainage response to spatially heterogeneous rainfall, asymmetric uplift, and normal faulting on an emerging carbonated platform (Sumba Island, Indonesia). We map geomorphic markers of fluvial dynamics and drainage rearrangement and compute a χ parameter that incorporates the contributions of unevenly distributed precipitation and asymmetric uplift to estimate erosional disequilibrium across drainage divides. We find that asymmetric emergence of Sumba Island created an initial parallel drainage, asymmetric across a divide that propagates landwards. Soon after establishing itself on the emerging slopes this drainage was disturbed by normal faulting, which has become the main force driving drainage rearrangement. Vertical offsets across normal fault scarps first triggered aggradation within valleys over the hanging walls, and then disconnected upstream reaches from downstream reaches, leading to the formation of wind gaps atop the fault scarps and upstream perched sedimentary basins. The defeat of rivers by growing fault scarps was catalysed by the possibility for surface water to be rerouted near the fault scarps into underground water networks inside the underlying carbonates. At the end of the process, the opposite drainage across the main water divide captured the struggling drainage. Capture mechanisms include initial groundwater capture of the perched alluvial aquifers, followed by ground sapping at the head of the opposite drainage and surface stream diversion by avulsion. Finally, normal faulting is the main driving force of drainage rearrangement allowing avulsion and karstic rerouting whereas asymmetric uplift and climate forcings have shown a low efficiency. The role of karstification is more ambiguous, catalysing or inhibiting drainage rearrangement.

International audience; This editorial describes a 10-paper special issue that arises from the 4th International Conference on Soil Bio- and Eco-Engineering (SBEE2016) ‘The Use of Vegetation to Improve Slope Stability’ held at the University of Sydney, Australia, in July 2016. The conference focused on current topics and progress in slope stability research and the successful application of soil bio-engineering and eco-engineering techniques to stabilizing slopes in a variety of climatic and geomorphic settings. The papers are divided into the following categories: vegetation and slope stability (1 paper); root-soil interactions (5 papers); slope stability modelling (2 papers); eco-engineering and land restoration (2 papers). Most of the papers present case studies documenting bio- and eco-engineering techniques, site-specific investigations or innovative slope stability modelling approaches and two papers are aimed at standardizing data collection and sustainability assessment practices within the discipline. Case studies are presented by scientific researchers, practitioners, geotechnical and civil engineers, biologists, ecologists, geomorphologists, and foresters from North America, Europe, South-East Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

International audience; Absolute reference frames are a means of describing the motion of plates on the surface of the Earth over time, relative to a fixed point or “frame.” Multiple models of absolute plate motion have been proposed for the Cretaceous–Tertiary period, however, estimating the robustness and limitations of each model remains a significant limitation for refining both regional and global models of plate motion as well as fully integrated and time dependent geodynamic models. Here, we use a novel approach to compare five models of absolute plate motion in terms of their consequences for forward modelled deep mantle structure since at least 140 Ma. We show that the use of hotspots, either fixed or moving, or palaeomagnetics, with or without corrections for true-polar wander, leads to significant differences in palaeo-plate velocities of over 10 cm/yr as well as differences in the location of palaeo-plate boundaries of up to 30° in longitude and latitude. Furthermore, we suggest that first order differences in forward predicted mantle structure between the models are due mostly to differences in palaeo-plate velocities, whereas variation in the location of plate boundaries may contribute to smaller wavelength offsets. We present a global comparison of the absolute reference frames in terms of mantle structure, which we have tomographically filtered to reflect the resolution of the seismic tomography model S20RTS. At very long wavelengths hotspot models best reproduce the mantle structure. However, when geometry and the match of smaller-scale subducted slab volumes are compared, a hybrid model based on moving hotspots after 100 Ma and palaeomagnetic data before (with no corrections for true-polar wander), best reproduces the overall mantle structure of slab burial grounds, even though no single model fits best at all mantle depths. We find also that the published subduction reference frame tested here results in a modelled mantle structure that agrees well with S20RTS for depths > 2500 km, equivalent to subduction before the Cretaceous, but not for shallower depths. This indicates that a careful assimilation of hotspot, palaeomagnetic and seismic tomography data into future absolute plate motion models is required to derive a more robust subduction reference frame.
