1. The use of digital materials for instruction in sport topics at the University of West Hungary

Abstract: his article describes research and development work, in the course of which a digital multimedia course book was produced, and its effectiveness examined in regards to teaching sport subjects at the Faculty of Pedagogy in the University of West Hungary. The purpose of this study was to examine whether applying ICT in teaching Physical Education (PE) increases pedagogical effectiveness. The special e-book on sports was made in CD-ROM format, because of the low rate among our correspondence students who have access to the Internet. The CD-ROM contains theoretical and practical general material used in the course of teaching PE, demonstrates specialized vocabulary through videos and charts and provides the possibility for testing and self-testing. The CD-ROM also contains an audio version of the material for the benefit of sight-impaired students. The experimental group consisted of 133 correspondent students from Sopron who used the digital course book and then were given written examinations on three topics in PE, while a control group of 99 correspondent students from Papa studied with a traditional textbook, and then wrote examinations on the same topics as the experimental group. The results indicated that using ICT increases the effective factor in teaching PE.

Abstract: International audience; Linter cellulose fiber based nanocomposites were prepared by functionalizing the fibers with [Fe(hptrz)3](OTs)2 spin-crossover nanoparticles and acridine orange dye molecules. The composites were characterized by electronic (UV–vis and fluorescence) and vibrational (Raman, FTIR) spectroscopies as well as by electronic and optical microscopies. The cellulose sheets prepared from the nanocomposite show significant thermochromic and thermofluorescent effects associated with the spin transition phenomenon, providing scope for paper thermometry and anti-counterfeit applications.

Abstract: International audience; Composite materials made of cellulose fibers and spin crossover micro-particles were investigated by magnetic measurements and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The storage modulus of the cellulose handsheet (0.6 GPa at room T) is significantly enhanced in the composite (1.7 GPa). The latter also displays a reversible increase of ca. 10% when switching the magnetic spin state of the particles from the low spin (LS) to the high spin (HS) form. Around the spin transition temperature a loss modulus peak is also observed, highlightingthe strong viscoelastic coupling between the particles and the cellulose matrix. These results pave the way for the development of a novel family of actuator materials based on spin crossover–polymer composites.

Abstract: International audience; ’Szigetköz’ is the largest island in the Carpathian basin. Due to the variety of natural conditions, the flora and fauna appear inquite individual forms. The most valuable natural formations of the region are the mortlakes, the floodplain forests and their floraand fauna. Anthropogenic activities have resulted in considerable changes and as s a consequence, in this region the landscapehas changed, and due to the regulation of waterways, the region has become a cultural landscape. The former large areas offorests and open woodlands nowadays accommodate cultivation, and, in parallel with that, the originalvariety of species has alsobecome rather poor. But the transformation is worth discussing not only from the viewpoint of flora and fauna, but also since thesociety of the inhabitants has also changed. Old crafts looking back on great traditions, mainly processing local resources, havedisappeared (loach catchers, marsh-dweller hunters and fishers, trough-makers/monoxylon carvers) or have become crafts ofminor significance (basket makers). In addition to biodiversity, cultural variety has also become poorer.; Szigetkőz est la plus large île du bassin des Carpates et grâce à la grande diversité de ses caractérisitques naturelles, on yobserve une faune et une flore unique. Les bras-morts, liés aux divagations des divers bras du Danube - ici anastomosé -, sont dessites naturels exceptionnels couverts de forêts alluviales et riches d’une très importante biodiversité. L’activité anthropique est àl’origine d’importantes modifications majeures dans ces paysages alluviaux. La régularisation des fleuves a produit un paysageculturel. Les anciennes grandes étendues forestières sont aujourd’hui devenues de grands espaces cultivables. Parallèlement, labiodiversité originale s’est appauvrie. Toutefois il ne faut pas analyser la tranformation de ce paysage uniquement au regard de lafaune et de la flore car la structure sociale a joué un role essentiel dans cette transformation. De nombreux anciens métiers baséssur les ressources locales ont disparu. On constate ainsi que parallèlement à la biodiversité, la multiculturalité s’est aussi appauvri.; A Szigetköz a Kárpát-medence legnagyobb kiterjedésű szigete. A természeti adottságok változatosságának köszönhetőenmind a flóra-, mind a faunaelemek egyedi formában fordulnak elő. A térség kiemelkedő természeti értékei a morotvák, az ártérierdők valamint ezek élővilága. Az antropogén tevékenységek komoly változásokat eredményeztek. Ezek következményekénta térségben a táj átalakult, a vízszabályozásoknak köszönhetően a térség kultúrtájjá alakult. Az egykor nagy kiterjedésű erdősligetestérszínek napjainkban szántóföldi növénytermesztésnek adnak otthont és ezzel párhuzamosan az eredeti fajösszetétel isszegényesebbé vált. De nem csak a növény- és állatvilág szempontjából érdemes az átalakulást elemeznünk, hiszen az itt élőktársadalma is megváltozott. Régi, nagy hagyományokkal rendelkező - elsősorban a helyi erőforrásokat feldolgozó mesterségektűntek el (csíkász, pákász, teknő/bödönhajófaragó) vagy váltak marginális jelentőségűvé (kosárfonó). A biodiverzitás mellett akulturális sokszínűség is szegényedett.

Abstract: International audience; We report on a thermochromic paper with reverse printing performance. The paper was elaborated by combining spin-crossover particles of [Fe(NH(2)trz)(3)]Br-2 or [Fe(Htrz)(2)(trz)]BF4 and linter cellulose fibers using standard paper-making processes. The composites were characterized by electronic and vibrational spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, calorimetry, tensile tests, elemental analyses as well as by electronic and optical microscopy. The composite cellulose sheets maintain good mechanical and thermal properties and show perceptible thermochromic effects associated with a memory effect. They are rewritable by laser heating and completely erasable over several hundreds of printing cycles providing scope for inkless printing technologies.

Abstract: International audience; & Context Projections of species distribution models under future climate are usually based on long-term averages. However, singular extreme drought events presumably con-tribute to the shaping of distribution limits at the retreating low-elevation xeric limits. & Methods The objectives of this study were to set up a distribution model based on extreme drought events (EDM), which uses sanitary logging information as a proxy of vitality response of beech, and compare it with the results of classical species distribution models (SDMs). & Results Predictions of the EDM for 2025 were in agreement with those of the SDM, but EDM predicted a more serious decline in all regions of Hungary towards the end of the century. & Conclusion These results suggest that the predicted increase in frequency and severity of drought events may further limit the distribution of beech in the future.

Abstract: Changing ecosystem conditions and diverse socio-economical events have contributed to an ingrained presence of non-native tree species (NNTs) in the natural and cultural European landscapes. Recent research endeavors have focused on different aspects of NNTs such as legislation, benefits, and risks for forestry, emphasizing that large knowledge gaps remain. As an attempt to fulfill part of these gaps, within the PEN-CAFoRR COST Action (CA19128) network, we established an open-access questionnaire that allows both academic experts and practitioners to provide information regarding NNTs from 20 European countries. Then, we integrated the data originating from the questionnaire, related to the country-based assessment of both peer-reviewed and grey literature, with information from available datasets (EUFORGEN and EU-Forest), which gave the main structure to the study and led to a mixed approach review. Finally, our study provided important insights into the current state of knowledge regarding NNTs. In particular, we highlighted NNTs that have shown to be less commonly addressed in research, raising caution about those characterized by an invasive behavior and used for specific purposes (e.g., wood production, soil recultivation, afforestation, and reforestation). NNTs were especially explored in the context of resilient and adaptive forest management. Moreover, we emphasized the assisted and natural northward migration of NNTs as another underscored pressing issue, which needs to be addressed by joint efforts, especially in the context of the hybridization potential. Abstract: International audience; Species turnover is ubiquitous. However, it remains unknown whether certain types of species are consistently gained or lost across different habitats. Here, we analysed the trajectories of 1827 plant species over time intervals of up to 78 years at 141 sites across mountain summits, forests, and lowland grasslands in Europe. We found, albeit with relatively small effect sizes, displacements of smaller- by larger-ranged species across habitats. Communities shifted in parallel towards more nutrient-demanding species, with species from nutrient-rich habitats having larger ranges. Because these species are typically strong competitors, declines of smaller-ranged species could reflect not only abiotic drivers of global change, but also biotic pressure from increased competition. The ubiquitous component of turnover based on species range size we found here may partially reconcile findings of no net loss in local diversity with global species loss, and link community-scale turnover to macroecological processes such as biotic homogenisation.

Abstract: The oak lace bug (OLB) Corythucha arcuata (Say, 1832) is an invasive alien species (IAS) that potentially could have many negative impacts on European oak health. Certain measures can be applied to counteract these effects. However, these measures may not be acceptable for forest managers or other stakeholder groups, such as private forest owners, environmental NGOs or the general public. Thereby, we set out to study the perception and knowledge of foresters and other stakeholders on the health status of European oak forests affected by oak lace bug and to investigate what forest health management measures would be acceptable to these target groups. An online survey questionnaire was designed and distributed via social networks, as well as professional networks via e-mails. The survey questionnaire was completed by 2084 respondents from nine European countries: Austria, Croatia, Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia. Even though only a little over 60% of respondents reported they had noticed the discolouration of oak leaves caused by OLB, almost all (93%) considered it to be a problem. As respondents come from a country where C. arcuata is widespread and established, people’s general knowledge and awareness of OLB began to increase. The survey revealed that foresters thought that the insect affected photosynthesis, acorn crop and the aesthetics of the trees, but cannot cause death of trees. However, they assume that the value of the wood would decrease (this fact is also supported by the respondents who are connected to an environmental NGO), but that OLB does not affect property value. However, forest owners claim that the value of the property can be affected and that people would avoid entering the forest. In terms of potential control methods, respondents preferred biological or mechanical measures over chemical ones. We consider this study to be a good basis for further research on the topic of perception, knowledge and attitudes related to OLB since we can expect that the IAS, such as OLB, will certainly spread to European countries that were not included in this survey.

Abstract: AGAP : équipe CONSYT; International audience; Whilst the benefits of agroforestry are widely recognised in tropical latitudes few studies have assessed how agroforestry is perceived in temperate latitudes. This study evaluates how stakeholders and key actors including farmers, landowners, agricultural advisors, researchers and environmentalists perceive the implementation and expansion of agroforestry in Europe. Meetings were held with 30 stakeholder groups covering different agroforestry systems in 2014 in eleven EU countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom). In total 344 valid responses were received to a questionnaire where stakeholders were asked to rank the positive and negative aspects of implementing agroforestry in their region. Improved biodiversity and wildlife habitats, animal health and welfare, and landscape aesthetics were seen as the main positive aspects of agroforestry. By contrast, increased labour, complexity of work, management costs and administrative burden were seen as the most important negative aspects. Overall, improving the environmental value of agriculture was seen as the main benefit of agroforestry, whilst management and socio-economic issues were seen as the greatest barriers. The great variability in the opportunities and barriers of the systems suggests enhanced adoption of agroforestry across Europe will be most likely to occur with specific initiatives for each type of system.

Abstract: International audience; During the last years, simple sequence repeats (SSRs, also known as microsatellites) and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have become the most popular molecular markers for describing neutral genetic variation in populations of a wide range of organisms. However, only a limited number of studies has focused on comparing the performance of these two types of markers for describing the underlying genetic structure of wild populations. Moreover, none of these studies targeted fungi, the group of organisms with one of the most complex reproductive strategies. We evaluated the utility of SSRs and SNPs for inferring the neutral genetic structure of Armillaria cepistipes (basidiomycetes) at different spatial scales. For that, 407 samples were collected across a small (150 km(2)) area in the Ukrainian Carpathians and a large (41 000 km(2)) area in the Swiss Alps. All isolates were analyzed at 17 SSR loci distributed throughout the whole genome and at 24 SNP loci located in different single-copy conserved genes. The two markers showed different patterns of structure within the two spatial scales studied. The multi-allelic SSR markers seemed to be best suited for detecting genetic structure in indigenous fungal populations at a rather small spatial scale (radius of ~50-100 km). The pattern observed at SNP markers rather reflected ancient divergence of distant (~1000 km) populations that in addition are separated by mountain ranges. Despite these differences, both marker types were suitable for detecting the weak genetic structure of the two A. cepistipes populations investigated.

Abstract: International audience; Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) are a major source of surface water pollution and degradation. This is particularly visible where sewage collectionwith combined sewer and centralized treatment arewell established, such as in Europe and North America: an over whelming number of surface water bodies are in insufficient status of ecology, hydrology and physico-chemical parameters. Therefore, several countries have started implementing constructed wetlands (CWs) as mainstream on-spot treatment. This paper summarizes the main design approaches that can be adopted. We identified eight different schemes for the implementation of CSO-CWs, based on our international experience and documented by a literature analysis. The performance review includes conventional water quality parameters, as well as pathogen and emergent contaminant removal. Furthermore, modelling tools for advanced design and for understanding a wide applicability of these green infrastructures are presented. This paper also provides a review on other side benefits offered by the adoption of Nature-Based Solutions for CSO treatment, such as ecosystem services, and the most common issues related to their operation and maintenance. Our analysis has produced a list of key factors for design and operation, all derived from full-scale installations in operation up to more than ten years.

Abstract: International audience; To better manage invasive populations, it is vital to understand the environmental drivers underlying spatial variation in demographic performance of invasive individuals and populations. The invasive common ragweed, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, has severe adverse effects on agriculture and human health, due to its vast production of seeds and allergenic pollen. Here, we identify the scale and nature of environmental factors driving individual performance of A. artemisiifolia, and assess their relative importance. We studied 39 populations across the European continent, covering different climatic and habitat conditions. We found that plant size is the most important determinant in variation of per-capita seed and pollen production. Using plant volume as a measure of individual performance, we found that the local environment (i.e. the site) is far more influential for plant volume (explaining 25% of all spatial variation) than geographic position (regional level; 8%) or the neighbouring vegetation (at the plot level; 4%). An overall model including environmental factors at all scales performed better (27%), including the weather (bigger plants in warm and wet conditions), soil type (smaller plants on soils with more sand), and highlighting the negative effects of altitude, neighbouring vegetation and bare soil. Pollen and seed densities varied more than 200-fold between sites, with highest estimates in Croatia, Romania and Hungary. Pollen densities were highest on arable fields, while highest seed densities were found along infrastructure, both significantly higher than on ruderal sites. We discuss implications of these findings for the spatial scale of management interventions against A. artemisiifolia.

Abstract: Anthropogenic sources of chloride in a lake catchment, including road salt, fertilizer, and wastewater, can elevate the chloride concentration in freshwater lakes above background levels. Rising chloride concentrations can impact lake ecology and ecosystem services such as fisheries and the use of lakes as drinking water sources. To analyze the spatial extent and magnitude of increasing chloride concentrations in freshwater lakes, we amassed a database of 529 lakes in Europe and North America that had greater than or equal to ten years of chloride data. For each lake, we calculated climate statistics of mean annual total precipitation and mean monthly air temperatures from gridded global datasets. We also quantified land cover metrics, including road density and impervious surface, in buffer zones of 100 to 1,500 m surrounding the perimeter of each lake. This database represents the largest global collection of lake chloride data. We hope that long-term water quality measurements in areas outside Europe and North America can be added to the database as they become available in the future.

Abstract: Circumpolar boreal-montane moss Buxbaumia aphylla is a new species for Croatia. We have found 58 capsules and 12 setae at the three sites: the smallest population (10 specimens) was located at Sokolina ; at the two other sites B. aphylla was more abundant (Svinjarevac: 29 specimens, Konjska smrt: 31 specimens). Ricciocarpos natans is reported from several localities. It was discovered during extensive surveys of the macrophytic vegetation throughout Croatia. Based on our recent findings, the species occurs in northern and eastern Croatia, mostly in backwaters, or areas subject to inundation, of the large rivers Danube, Drava and Mura. Abstract: International audience; Today, the main challenges in rural areas are those of migration and unemployment. The inhabitants of the traditional Őrségregion also face this serious problem. The aim of this paper is to reveal problems in the region by highlighting the two local ruraldevelopment solutions; opportunities for tourism and agricultural development. The opinion of local inhabitants, acquired throughquestionnaires, plays a special role in this search for solutions. Given its geographic location, the success of the region’s ruraldevelopment may also be achieved through cross-border initiatives and cooperation.; De nos jours, les deux grands problemes des régions rurales sont le dépeuplement et le chomage. La region de Örség ,étudiée dans cet article, n’a pas été epargnée par ce probleme. Cette étude permet de mettre en avant les problemes de cepaysage traditonnel. Deux piliers possibles de développement ont été intégré á cette analyse: le tourisme et le renouvellement del’agriculture. Un questionnaire a été sounmis aux habitants de la région afin de prndre en comnpte leur avis. Aux vues de la situationgéographique, un troisieme chemin de developpement pourrait etre envisagé sous forme de collaborations trans-frontalieres.; Napjainkban a rurális térségek egyik legnagyobb problémája az elvándorlás és a munkanélküliség. A tradícionális Őrséglakossága is komoly válságot él meg, jelen írás feltáró jelleggel rámutat a tájegység problémáira. Megoldásképpen pedigrávilágít a helyi vidékfejlesztés két alap pillérére, a turizmus és az agrárgazdálkodás helyzetére és továbblépési lehetőségeire. Amegoldáskeresésben külön szerepet kap a lakosság véleménye, mely egy terepi kérdőívezés feldolgozása révén vált ismertté. Ahelyi vidékfejlesztést a térség helyzetéből adódóan határokon átívelő kezdeményezések és együttműködések is sikerre vihetik.

Abstract: The fate of peripheral forest tree populations is of particular interest in the context of climate change. These populations may concurrently be those where the most significant evolutionary changes will occur; those most facing increasing extinction risk; the source of migrants for the colonization of new areas at leading edges; or the source of genetic novelty for reinforcing standing genetic variation in various parts of the range. Deciding which strategy to implement for conserving and sustainably using the genetic resources of peripheral forest tree populations is a challenge. Here, we review the genetic and ecological processes acting on different types of peripheral populations and indicate why these processes may be of general interest for adapting forests and forest management to climate change. We particularly focus on peripheral populations at the rear edge of species distributions where environmental challenges are or will become most acute. We argue that peripheral forest tree populations are “natural laboratories” for resolving priority research questions such as how the complex interaction between demographic processes and natural selection shape local adaptation; and whether genetic adaptation will be sufficient to allow the long-term persistence of species within their current distribution. Peripheral populations are key assets for adaptive forestry which need specific measures for their preservation. The traditionally opposing views which may exist between conservation planning and sustainable forestry need to be reconciled and harmonized for managing peripheral populations. Based on existing knowledge, we suggest approaches and principles which may be used for the management and conservation of these distinctive and valuable populations, to maintain active genetic and ecological processes that have sustained them over time.

Abstract: WOS: 000422633100002, The European Alien Species Information Network (EASIN) aims to facilitate the exploration of alien species information in Europe, and is recognized as the information system supporting European Union Member States in the implementation of the recently published Invasive Alien Species Regulation. In this paper, we present the role and activities of the EASIN Editorial Board (EB), which is responsible for the quality assurance, safeguarding and constant improvement of EASIN. The EB is supported by a web platform that facilitates online discussions about alien species. This platform creates a virtual community by providing a forum-like interface that is moderated by the EB Members but is freely accessible to the scientific community and the general public. It allows all registered users to make comments, raise questions and share experience and expertise on alien species in Europe. Moreover, it provides a means for exchanging opinions and solving disputes in a transparent way. An ever increasing number of these alien species originates from Asia, such as the box tree moth Cydalima perspectalis, a species native of China, Korea and Japan, which has recently been introduced into Europe. Since its first observation in Germany in 2007, the box tree moth has spread rapidly all over Europe, causing important damage on commonly planted ornamental box trees. The ornamental trade between Europe and China is hypothesized as the pathway of its primary introduction while the trade within Europe could have favored its rapid spread. In order to disentangle invasion pathways, samples of C. perspectalis were collected in China, Korea and in 13 of the 25 invaded European countries. We analyzed 174 sequences of mitochondrial markers COI and COII from the native and invaded areas in order to check the genetic variability, and to develop a preliminary phylogeographical approach. In the Asian populations, we observed 7 haplotypes divided into 3 haplogroups, and 4 of those haplotypes were also observed in Europe. Our preliminary results did not show evidence of genetic structure in the native range, which did not allow to define the potential donor regions but the presence of several Asian haplotypes in Europe in addition to a low but significant geographical structure is in favor of multiple introductions. Nevertheless, more populations need to be sampled in the area of origin together with the definition of more polymorphic markers in order to better understand the invasion pathways of C. perspectalis.

Abstract: International audience; Tiwai is a wooded island in the river Moa near the Gola rainforest in eastern Sierra Leone. A particular feature of the island is the lack of Dorylus driver ants, which are usually major predators in African forests, including of termites. Therefore termites are very abundant and this appears to result in efficient decomposition of dry leaves and perhaps leaves less room for other decomposers. Furthermore, arachnids catch the eye, including ferocious-looking whip spiders. Many butterflies and grasshoppers showed signs of predator attacks, especially also wing damage in the shape of a lizards maul. To gain better insight in predation on butterflies, caterpillars made from modeling clay (dummies) were used. Damage to the dummies suggests a daily predation pressure of 50%. Damage to dummies was mainly caused by ants and wasps, and notby birds. Although it was the dry season, many butterflies appeared to be young, and a good number and variety of caterpillars have beenfound, including a species for which no caterpillar records existed. In total, eighty butterfly species were observed, of the about 450 that may be expected locally. Hopefully, these scarce remnants of West-African forest will be conserved, so that nature lovers and entomologists can continue to benefit from the excellent facilities.

Abstract: This review comprises both well-known and recently described Phytophthora species and concentrates on Phytophthora–woody plant interactions. First, comprehensive data on infection strategies are presented which were the basis for three models that explain invasion and spread of Phytophthora pathogens in different woody host plants. The first model describes infection of roots, the second concentrates on invasion of the trunk, and the last one summarizes infection and invasion of host plants via leaves. On the basis of morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular data, scenarios are suggested which explain the sequences of reactions that occur in susceptible and tolerant plants following infections of roots or of stem bark. Particular emphasis is paid to the significance of Phytophthora elicitins for such host–pathogen interactions. Abstract: International audience; A large database of invasive forest pathogens (IFPs) was developed to investigate the patterns and determinants of invasion in Europe. Detailed taxonomic and biological information on the invasive species was combined with country-specific data on land use, climate, and the time since invasion to identify the determinants of invasiveness, and to differentiate the class of environments which share territorial and climate features associated with a susceptibility to invasion. IFPs increased exponentially in the last four decades. Until 1919, IFPs already present moved across Europe. Then, new IFPs were introduced mainly from North America, and recently from Asia. Hybrid pathogens also appeared. Countries with a wider range of environments, higher human impact or international trade hosted more IFPs. Rainfall influenced the diffusion rates. Environmental conditions of the new and original ranges and systematic and ecological attributes affected invasiveness. Further spread of established IFPs is expected in countries that have experienced commercial isolation in the recent past. Densely populated countries with high environmental diversity may be the weakest links in attempts to prevent new arrivals. Tight coordination of actions against new arrivals is needed. Eradication seems impossible, and prevention seems the only reliable measure, although this will be difficult in the face of global mobility.

Abstract: International audience; Abstract: In this study we investigated the pseudokarren of blockfields on the Kali-Basin (Balaton-felvidék, Hungary). These forms partly developed by dissolution because of the dissolution of the amorphous silica the rock will crush into the grains. The most common pseudokarren forms on the surface of the boulders of the blockfields are very often kamenitzas, rinnen, grykes, pits. Pockets, solution notches occur on the walls of the boulders. We made the first morphological map of the Szentbékkállai-blockfield. We had material-investigations made. We had the crystalline component of a few rock samples, further more the SiO2 quantity of the water of a few kamenitzas determined. We had the solutionability of the rock certified. We measured the size of the gravels of the rock along the line, by using these data we wanted to analyse connection between the solutionability of the rock and the grain-size. We measured the parameters of the kamenitzas and pits. We groupped the kamenitzas and the pits. We took into account the quality of the rock and the size of the bearing boulders when we created the groups. We examined the depths of the kamenitzas and pits in the function of their average size. The investigation can present that the intensity of the solution depends on the quantity of the amorphous silica and the quantity of the water. This latter fact depends on the size of the boulder. The intensity of the solution depends on the grain-size of the rock too as well as on the solutional period. On the surface of the fine-grain rock (sandstone) the water will drain on the surface because the water can not infiltrate into such rock. Therefore the solutional period will be short. The soluted material can be transported only on the surface. If the grain-size is greater, the water may infiltrate into the rock. Therefore the length of the solutional period will grow and the crushed grains could be transported into the rock. Therefore the greatest pseudokarren forms will develop on the fine-grain conglomerate. Because of the decrease of the dip of the boulder, since the solutional period will grow, the quantity of the dissolved material may grow. The intensity of the solution will be smaller on the medium-size conglomerate because the time period of the solution decreases because the velocity of the infiltration grows.; Cet article présente une série de pistes de recherche concernant l’étude des pseudolapiés développées dans des roches siliceuses (granite, gneiss, grès siliceux…). Rappelons que le terme de lapiés est d’habitude réservé à des formes de dissolution observées dans des roches sensibles à la mise en solution (notamment les roches carbonatées). C’est dans ces dernières que les formes de lapiés sont les plus évidentes et prennent le plus d’ampleur. Néanmoins, il existe des morphologies proches se développant dans des roches siliceuses. Les auteurs se proposent de les étudier dans un secteur de Hongrie où ces formes sont fréquentes : le bassin de Kali. Ces formes de dissolution se situent dans des champs de blocs correspondant au débitage de dalles siliceuses mises à l’affleurement. Ce secteur littoral de l’ancienne Mer pannonienne d’âge tertiaire, présente principalement des grès cimentés par une silice amorphe. Après le retrait de la mer, cette zone fut soumise, au Pliocène, à des conditions d’érosion aréolaire en contexte semi-aride. Une partie du ciment siliceux provient d’une solubilisation de la silice en contexte chaud en relation avec le fonctionnement hydrothermal de cette région. Cet hydrothermalisme est consécutif à des périodes d’intense volcanisme très fréquent en Europe à l’ère Tertiaire. Les niveaux de grès du Bassin de Kali ont subi une importante désagrégation par dissolution du ciment siliceux. Cette action a facilité le débitage de cette formation en blocs et en dalles. Certains secteurs comme celui de Szentbékkálla, offre des blocs mieux exhumés, correspondant à un passage plus sableux et quartzeux, à la différence de ceux de Salföldi, qui sont plus petits. Les conditions générales d’altération font ressortir les discontinuités dans les formations gréseuses et les variations des roches. La taille des grains et graviers cimentés jouent un rôle déterminant dans la fomation de ces modelés en creux, notamment par le biais des nombreuses variations dans les faciès lithologiques. Dans les grès, certains lits rocheux succèdent à des formes lenticulaires en relation avec les variations des grains cimentés. Il est possible de proposer une classification des grès en fonction de cette taille et de distinguer, notamment entre ceux présentant des graviers fins (inférieur à 10 mm) et ceux présentant des graviers moyens dont la taille est supérieure à 10 mm. Ces derniers semblent en relation avec les formations lenticulaires. Les processus, expliquant une telle diversité de formation, sont variés. Toute proportion gardée, la dissolution de la silice amorphe évoque un processus proche de la dissolution des roches dolomitiques. Dans les deux cas, après disparition du ciment, les grains sont libérés. Cela implique également que le ciment soit exporté soit en surface, soit en s’infiltrant en profondeur. Une partie des grains les plus fins peut être remaniée à son tour par l’action du froid et dans une certaine mesure, par l’action du vent. La silice amorphe, forme la plus fréquente dans ce secteur, peut également se dissoudre sous certaines conditions de température et de pH que l’on retrouve volontiers en domaine tropical. Dans tous les cas, le pH doit être élevé, proche de 8,5. Certains processus pédologiques peuvent également contribuer à cette élévation du pH. Le facteur le plus important est la quantité d’eau disponible pour la mise en solution de la silice, et plus elle est abondante et renouvelée, plus la dissolution est importante. Les formes de dissolution sont très variées et regroupés dans le tableau I. Parmi celles-ci, les « kamenitzas » sont les plus fréquentes, qu’elles soient simples ou de forme coalescente, plus complexe. Certains se forment en limite de blocs, alors que d’autres présentent des fonds plats, notamment quand elles se développent plus pronfondément dans les grès, ou présentent des formes allongées d’orientation nord-sud. Il s’agit souvent de modelés de détails et/ou de micro-morphologies. Des cheminées se développent également dans les blocs ou rochers en prenant des formes plus ou moins complexes. D’autres formes de dissolution peuvent apparaître notamment des pseudo--trittkarren et des cuvettes de dissolution. Elles isolent des formes résiduelles correspondant vraisemblablement à des noyaux de résistance de la roche face à la dissolution. Afin de comprendre comment se sont mises en place ces nombreux modelés de dissolution, plusieurs méthodes ont été envisagées. Une carte géomorphologique a été dressée et des échantillons de grès ont été prélevés afin de mieux connaitre leur composition minéralogique. Des essais de mise en solution des échantillons de grès ont complété cette première approche. Une relation a été établie entre la taille des grains et l’importance de la dissolution. Des mesures morphométriques ont été réalisés sur le terrain tous les 5 cm afin d’établir statistiquement la taille des grains. A partir des relevés morphométriques, et de ceux concernant la taille des « kamenitzas », une classification a pu être proposée en 7 groupes. Des relations directes sont apparues notamment entre la taille des blocs et la taille des « kamenitzas », ainsi que la profondeur des cheminées. Dans les deux cas, plus les blocs sont gros, et plus les formes sont développées. A la suite, de cette investigation, des calculs de dissolution spécifiques sont proposés. Dans de nombreux cas, les processus de dissolution indiquent une action de fragmentation de la roche. L’importance de la surface des rochers ou blocs joue aussi un rôle important. Plus cette taille est importante, et plus elle est susceptible de recevoir une plus grande quantité d’eau. Cela favorise l’action de la dissolution et la taille des formes augmente en proportion. Les processus de dissolution peuvent engendrer des croûtes siliceuses. Dans ce cas, le temps de dissolution joue un rôle important : plus ce temps est long, et plus la quantité de matière dissoute augmente. A son tour, la taille des grains exerce une influence : plus elle augmente et plus le temps de percolation est rapide, notamment dans les grès à grains moyens. Ainsi, ces morphologies sont associées avec la nature des grès de secteurs bien précis du bassin de Kali. La taille des grains ou graviers favorisent des types de formes de dissolution bien particuliers. Les calculs de dissolution spécifique permettent d’opposer des secteurs où elle est importante (zone de Szentbékkállai) à des zones où elle est plus faible (Salföldi). Dans le premier cas, les blocs rocheux sont plus gros et on été exhumés plus tôt que dans le secteur de Salfödi. Certains « kamenitzas » se développent en deux temps : elles passent par une première phase de creusement et si les conditions d’altération se modifient, elles s’élargissent latéralement. Les formes en taffoni observées ne sont pas en relation avec les conditions actuelles, mais sont héritées de conditions climatiques passées. Enfin, les modelés en « inselberg » proviennent de noyaux moins sensibles à la dissolution. Pour conclure, on peut indiquer que la mise en place des pseudolapiés dépend surtout de trois facteurs importants : la présence de silice amorphe, de l’intensité de la dissolution qui dépend elle-même de la profondeur et de la taille des blocs rocheux, et de la taille des grains formant les grains, associant dans le processus de formation une érosion chimique et mécanique.

Abstract: Our aim was to analyse the transcription levels of the three non-classical class Ib genes SLA-6, SLA-7 and SLA-8 of the swine major histocompatibility complex in various tissues and conditions and to compare them to the transcription levels of classical class Ia genes. Twenty-five adult tissues from two pig breeds, pig renal PK15 cells infected with the Pseudorabies virus, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) stimulated by lipopolysaccharide or a mixture of phorbol myristate acetate and ionomycin were included in our study. Relative transcription was quantified by quantitative real-time PCR. On average, in adult tissues and PBMCs and compared to SLA-6, the transcription level of SLA-Ia genes was 100-1000 times higher, the level of SLA-8 was 10-20 times higher, and that of SLA-7 was five times higher. Thus, SLA-8 is the most transcribed SLA-Ib gene, followed by the SLA-7 and SLA-6 genes. The highest transcription levels of SLA-Ib transcripts were found in the lymphoid organs, followed by the lung and the digestive tract. The tissue variability of expression levels was widest for the SLA-6 gene, with a 1:32 ratio between the lowest and highest levels in contrast to a 1:12 ratio for the SLA-7 and SLA-8 genes and a 1:16 ratio for the SLA-Ia genes. During PK-15 infection and PBMC stimulation, SLA-Ia and SLA-8 genes were downregulated, whereas SLA-6 and SLA-7 were upregulated, downregulated or not significantly modified. Our overall results confirm the tissue-wide transcription of the three SLA-Ib genes and suggest that they have complementary roles.

Abstract: International audience; Recent research suggests that genetic diversity in tree population may shape associated species assemblages and then drive ecosystem processes. Trees can support large numbers of insect species and some functional traits of trees have been shown to have major influence on insect communities and resultant damage. Studying the response of insect herbivore populations to the genetic diversity of tree populations is therefore a relevant approach to test community genetics hypotheses. The objective of our study was to evaluate how insect herbivory is affected by genotypes of Populus nigra, a dominant native poplar species in riparian forests of Europe. In a field experiment, we planted eight native P. nigra clones in plots of increasing genetic diversity with combinations of one to six clones. Insect herbivory was measured using visual estimation of leaf damage by six functional guilds of insects: chewers, skeletonisers, leaf miners, gall makers, leaf rollers, sap suckers and sap feeders. Response of insect herbivory to increasing genotypic diversity was analysed by considering the net diversity effect which was further divided in a complementary and a selection effects. Overall we observed slightly higher insect herbivory in poplar clone mixtures than in clone monocultures. This pattern was due to two opposite mechanisms. There was a positive complementary effect, with higher associational susceptibility in more genetically diverse mixtures. On the other hand, the selection effect also increased with the genetic diversity as the more diverse clone mixtures were more likely to comprise insect resistant clones.

Abstract: International audience; The main bioactive compounds of Trigonella foenum graecum L. (fenugreek) seeds are protodioscin, trigoneoside, diosgenin, yamogenin, which have anti-carcinogenic potency through inhibition of cell proliferation and inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. We examined the effect of fenugreek on ALOX and COX genes in AKR/J H-2k mice exposed to dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA), the potent carcinogen. Expression pattern of these genes was determined by detecting the mRNA expression in various tissues (the lungs, liver, spleen and the kidneys) in four groups of mice. Two groups were fed with normal and two of them with fenugreek containing nutriment. Each group divided into DMBA treated and control groups. Mice were autopsied on the 7th day after DMBA treatment for mRNA isolation. Fenugreek consumption itself did not change gene expression compared to the control group. DMBA could increase expression of ALOX12, ALOX15, ALOX5 genes mainly in all organs. Fenugreek consumption was generally protective in each organ in different manner. DMBA treatment increased COX2 gene expression, but fenugreek were protective in all tissues examined. In COX1 gene, fenugreek diet could suppress the expression, except for spleen, independently from carcinogen exposure. Therefore via inhibiting the arachidonic acid metabolism fenugreek may prevent tumorigenesis

Abstract: International audience; Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra cv ‘Italica’) has been planted all over Europe, mostly as single trees or in rows along roads or around squares. This clone represents a unique opportunity to study local effects (e.g. associated community diversity) on a single genotype. We investigated the effect of local environmental conditions (biogeographical species pools, site conditions, surrounding vegetation) and clines in environmental conditions (climate, latitude) on the diversity of associated organisms, notably insect species. Pairs of trees were selected on at least five sampling sites (mixture of rural and urban) in each of the following countries: France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Poland. Fifty leaves per tree were selected randomly once a month from May until September and evaluated for damage by six functional groups of insect: chewers, skeletonizers, leaf miners, sucking and sap feedings, gall makers and leaf rollers. Insect species were also determined for leaf miners and gall makers. There was no significant difference in damage levels between pairs of trees at each site, but significant differences were found among sites and among countries for the means of leaves damaged by each functional group. The same leaf miner species were found in the five counties but at different frequencies. The dominant gall-maker species was the aphid, Pemphigus spyrothecae, in all countries; however both species composition and dominance varied strongly among sites. Remarkably, species diversity (Shannon-Wiener Index) of gall makers and leaf miners was higher on urban sites than on rural sites.

Abstract: National audience; Des recherches récentes ont montré que la diversité génétique des arbres peut conditionner l’assemblage des communautés associées et ainsi façonner l’évolution des écosystèmes. Les arbres peuvent héberger une importante communauté d’insectes et certains de leurs traits fonctionnels (débourrement végétatif, surface foliaire...) peuvent avoir une influence majeure sur la consommation des insectes. L’objectif de cette étude est d’évaluer comment l’herbivorie interagit avec la diversité génétique intraspécifique de huit clones de peuplier noir du bassin de la Loire. Nous avons installé en avril 2009 un dispositif expérimental en milieu naturel au sein de la ripisylve à peuplier noir de l’ISS Loire (intensive study site, http://www.evoltree.eu/), comprenant 120 parcelles unitaires de 6 plants, en combinaison variable de 1 à 6 génotypes. Des dispositifs similaires ont été installés en Hongrie, Italie et Pologne dans le cadre du réseau d’excellence européen Evoltree. L’herbivorie a été mesurée par estimation visuelle des dommages foliaires de six guildes fonctionnelles d’insectes : brouteurs, squeletteurs, mineuses, enrouleurs, galligènes, piqueurs-suceurs. La réponse des insectes a été analysée en tenant compte du niveau de diversité et de la composition des parcelles. Les premiers résultats du dispositif de Loire montrent un effet positif de la diversité, principalement expliqué par une plus forte sensibilité des parcelles les plus diversifiées génétiquement.

Abstract: International audience; We record 201 alien curculionoids established in Europe, of which 72 originate from outside Europe. Aliens to Europe belong to fi ve families, but four-fi fths of them are from the Curculionidae. Many families and subfamilies, including some species-rich ones, have few representatives among alien curculionoids,whereas some others are over-represented; these latter, Dryophthoridae, Cossoninae and specially Scolytinae,all contain many xylophagous species. The number of new records of alien species increases continuously,with an acceleration during the last decades. Aliens to Europe originate from all parts of the world,but mainly Asia; few alien curculionoids originate from Africa. Italy and France host the largest number of alien to Europe. Th e number of aliens per country decreases eastwards, but is mainly correlated with importations frequency and, secondarily, with climate. All alien curculionoids have been introduced accidentally via international shipping. Wood and seed borers are specially liable to human-mediated dispersal due to their protected habitat. Alien curculionoids mainly attack stems, and half of them are xylophagous. The majority of alien curculionoids live in human-modifi ed habitats, but many species live in forests and other natural or semi-natural habitats. Several species are pests, among which grain feeders as Sitophilus spp. are the most damaging.

These founders are likely to represent a small fraction of the total genetic diversity found in the source population. Our study set out to trace genetically the geographical origin of the horse-chestnut leafminer, Cameraria ohridella, an invasive microlepidopteran whose area of origin is still unkown. Since its discovery in Macedonia 25 years ago, this insect has experienced an explosive westward range expansion, progressively colonizing all of Central and Western Europe. We used cytochrome oxidase I sequences (DNA barcode fragment) and a set of six polymorphic microsatellites to assess the genetic variability of C. ohridella populations, and to test the hypothesis that C. ohridella derives from the southern Balkans (Albania, Macedonia and Greece). Analysis of mtDNA of 486 individuals from 88 localities allowed us to identify 25 geographically structured haplotypes. In addition, 480 individuals from 16 populations from Europe and the southern Balkans were genotyped for 6 polymorphic microsatellite loci. High haplotype diversity and low measures of nucleotide diversities including a significantly negative Tajima's D indicate that C. ohridella has experienced rapid population expansion during its dispersal across Europe. Both mtDNA and microsatellites show a reduction in genetic diversity of C. ohridella populations sampled from artificial habitats (e.g. planted trees in public parks, gardens, along roads in urban or sub-urban areas) across Europe compared with C. ohridella sampled in natural stands of horse-chestnuts in the southern Balkans. These findings suggest that European populations of C. ohridella may indeed derive from the southern Balkans.

Abstract: The aim of the study was to analyse the relationship between the body condition and the results of metabolic profile tests done in the milk (DIM) of dairy cows in different days. Moreover, critical points in the early pre- and postpartum period were also analysed. In the experiment, blood and urine samples were taken from 1984 clinically healthy cows (from 49 large scale Holstein dairy farms in Hungary), selected randomly from various groups of cows with different physiological stage of lactation and gestation, 3-5 hours after the morning feeding. During the experiment body condition scoring (BCS) was measured, as well. It was concluded, that the BCS decreased from the 1st day of lactation (3.48) onwards till the 44th day (2.65) and slightly increased till the day 218 (2.89). Abstract: International audience; The invasion of species outside their native range is increasingly frequent and can have serious impact on biodiversity and cause health risks and economical damage to agriculture and forestry. The rapid spread of these alien invasive species has mainly been investigated from an ecological point of view. Little is known about the evolutionary aspects of invasions. lnvasions are rapid evolutionary events in which populations are unusually subjected to founder effects during colonization events followed by a rapid expansion. Thus newly arrived populations are likely to be less variable than the original population from which they derived. This represents a paradox since successful invading species are likely to be genetically depauperate compared to their source populations. We study this paradox using Cameraria ohridella, an invasive microlepidoptera, whose origin is unknown as a model system. Since its discovery in Macedonia, twenty years ago, this insect has progressively colonized all western and central Europe. Here we use molecular markers to study the genetic variability of c. ohridella, across its geographical distribution. The main objectives of this study are (i) to study the genetic structure of both the area of origin and invaded areas of c. ohridella; (ii) to see whether the invasion process and associated demographic expansion is due to changes in the genetic structure of the populations; (iii) to assess whether both invasive insects show a loss of genetic diversity associated with the process of invasion and for the presence of "invasive" haplotypes.

Abstract: A comparative study of the ligand ( 5 – 10 ) effect on the rhodium catalytic activity and selectivity in the homogeneous hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated oxosteroids ( 1 – 4 ) is reported. The highest activity for C C reduction was observed with phosphite ligands, being diphosphite 10 the most active. Furthermore, the presence of phosphite 6 significantly enhances the chemo and α-diastereoselectivity for the hydrogenation reaction. The β-methyl groups of the steroidal framework lead to a very high α-diastereoselectivity, even in the absence of phosphorous ligands. Substrate 4 is the paradigm presenting higher than 94% α-diastereoselectivity for any catalytic system studied. The catalytic system formed from rhodium and the new diphosphite 10 also revealed a remarkable tendency for the C O reduction and a noteworthy stability.

Abstract: Changes in Collembola richness and diversity along a land-use intensity gradient were studied in eight European countries (Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, Hungary, UK, Ireland and Finland). In each country a set of six 1 km2 land-use units (LUUs) were selected forming a gradient ranging from natural forest to agricultural dominated landscapes, passing through mixed-use ones. In addition to data on Collembola, detailed information regarding landscape diversity and structure was collected for each LUU. A total of 47,774 individuals were identified from 281 species. Collembola reacted not only to changes in the diversity of the landscape, but also to the composition of that diversity and the area occupied by each land-use type at each LUU. Although species richness patterns were not concordant among the different countries, the total number of species per LUU (landscape richness) was generally higher in natural forests and mixed-used landscapes, and lower in agricultural dominated landscapes. Moreover, high richness and diversity of Collembola at each LUU were associated with a diverse landscape structure, both in terms of number of patches and patch richness. Despite this comparable species richness between mixed-use landscapes and those dominated by natural forests, average species richness on forested areas (local richness) decreased along the gradient, showing that forest patches on mixed-use landscapes support a lower richness than in landscapes dominated by forest. This aspect is important when addressing the role of native forests in structuring biodiversity in disturbed and fragmented landscapes. Abstract: Butterflies are a diverse and charismatic insect group that are thought to have evolved with plants and dispersed throughout the world in response to key geological events. However, these hypotheses have not been extensively tested because a comprehensive phylogenetic framework and datasets for butterfly larval hosts and global distributions are lacking. We sequenced 391 genes from nearly 2,300 butterfly species, sampled from 90 countries and 28 specimen collections, to reconstruct a new phylogenomic tree of butterflies representing 92% of all genera. Our phylogeny has strong support for nearly all nodes and demonstrates that at least 36 butterfly tribes require reclassification. Divergence time analyses imply an origin ~100 million years ago for butterflies and indicate that all but one family were present before the K/Pg extinction event. We aggregated larval host datasets and global distribution records and found that butterflies are likely to have first fed on Fabaceae and originated in what is now the Americas. Soon after the Cretaceous Thermal Maximum, butterflies crossed Beringia and diversified in the Palaeotropics. Our results also reveal that most butterfly species are specialists that feed on only one larval host plant family. 48. Elevational and seasonal patterns of butterflies and hawkmoths in plant-pollinator networks in tropical rainforests of Mount Cameroon.

Abstract: Butterflies and moths are conspicuous flower visitors but their role in plant-pollinator interactions has rarely been quantified, especially in tropical rainforests. Moreover, we have virtually no knowledge of environmental factors affecting the role of lepidopterans in pollination networks. We videorecorded flower-visiting butterflies and hawkmoths on 212 plant species (> 26,000 recorded hrs) along the complete elevational gradient of rainforests on Mount Cameroon in dry and wet seasons. Altogether, we recorded 734 flower visits by 80 butterfly and 27 hawkmoth species, representing only ~ 4% of all flower visits. Although lepidopterans visited flowers of only a third of the plant species, they appeared to be key visitors for several plants. Lepidopterans visited flowers most frequently at mid-elevations and dry season, mirroring their local elevational patterns of diversity. Characteristics of interaction networks showed no apparent elevational or seasonal patterns, probably because of the high specialisation of all networks. Significant non-linear changes of proboscis and forewing lengths were found along elevation. A positive relationship between the lengths of proboscis of hesperiid butterflies and tube of visited flowers was detected. Differences in floral preferences were found between sphingids and butterflies, revealing the importance of nectar production, floral size and shape for sphingids, and floral colour for butterflies. The revealed trait-matching and floral preferences confirmed their potential to drive floral evolution in tropical ecosystems.

Abstract: Phytochemical investigation of the whole plant of Filago vulgaris Lam. (Asteraceae) resulted in the isolation and characterization of seven compounds, including a rare methoxylated flavonol (araneol), tetrahydrofurofuranolignans (pinoresinol and syringaresinol), p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, vanillin, vanillic acid and scopoletin. The structures of the compounds were determined by NMR and mass spectroscopy. All compounds were first obtained from this species and reported for the genus Filago. Our results demonstrate that highly methoxylated flavonols lacking substituents on ring B and lignans can be regarded as taxonomic markers for the tribe Inuleae. The lipophilic extract of F. vulgaris was found to have antiproliferative activity against HeLa cells (62.1±0.9% inhibition at 30 μ/ml), and araneol was highly effective against this tumour cell line (IC 50 8.36 μ M).

50. First records of 31 species of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) in Cameroon, with remarks on their elevational ranges.

Abstract: Background: The biodiversity of West and Central Africa is understudied, including butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Cameroon, through its position in between few biogeographic regions and diversity of habitats, is an important hotspot of lepidopteran diversity. However, the country also ranks low when it comes to local biodiversity knowledge. During our long-term ecological projects in the Cameroonian part of the Gulf of Guinea Highlands, we collected rich material of butterflies and moths, including a number of interesting faunistic records., New Information: In this study, we report 31 species of butterflies and moths which have not yet been recorded in Cameroon. These species comprised eight new genera records for the country. In many cases, our records represented an important extension of the species' known distribution, including ten species whose distribution ranges extended into the Guinean biogeographic region. We also comment on the species' elevational distribution ranges on Mount Cameroon where most of our records originated.
