In this research, the authors examine how consumers perceive the fruits of university–industry collaborations (i.e., new products codeveloped with universities). Eight studies document a positive university effect and highlight its practical significance and boundary conditions. An Instagram A/B test utilizing a video that refers (vs. does not refer) to the underlying university–industry collaboration results in higher click-through rates and ad engagement levels. Another field study demonstrates that university-codeveloped products are more attractive to consumers, even after an actual product trial. Further, several consequential studies reveal that consumers are willing to pay up to 65% more for products marketed as codeveloped with a university. The authors argue and show that collaborating with a university infuses the underlying firm with a stronger sense of scientific legitimacy, thereby making the resulting product more attractive to consumers. Congruously, the authors find that the effect is more pronounced when the scientific legitimacy engendered by universities is more important to the focal product (i.e., high tech vs. low tech), underlying company (i.e., new vs. established), or target customer (i.e., high vs. low belief in science). In the face of the challenges of rising demand and increasing economic pressure, medical service innovations and university hospitals are becoming increasingly important as cornerstones for the continuous development of medical care. Simultaneously, increasing technological complexity, scarce funding, and resource-intensive technology development are forcing university hospitals to open up their internal innovation processes. Numerous studies have highlighted the beneficial effects of cross-sectoral collaboration on the innovation performance of industrial entities, while neglecting the perspective of academic institutions. The impact of industry collaborations on the service innovativeness of university hospitals in particular has not been addressed in previous research. Although the potential for nonlinear effects of university-industry collaborations has been discussed in research, adequate evidence, particularly in the healthcare context, has not been provided. Therefore, this study addresses the questions: (1) What is the impact of university-hospital-industry collaboration (UHIC) on the service innovativeness of university hospitals? (2) Can a nonlinear relationship between UHIC and university hospitals' service innovativeness be empirically verified? The hypotheses are tested based on an unbalanced panel data set, which combines three distinct data sources and comprises annual observations from 2011 until 2019 of all German university hospitals. The findings indicate that the UHIC intensity has a positive effect on university hospitals' service innovativeness with a one-year time lag. Furthermore, a negative quadratic UHIC effect was found. In doing so, this study complements existing research and opens the black box by uncovering the downside of cross-sectoral collaboration for a more complete understanding of the underlying dynamics of this growing area of research, with a particular focus on university hospitals. This paper delves into integrating industry perspectives into Sub-Saharan African agricultural education, exploring collaboration challenges and benefits. It comprehensively analyses factors influencing university-industry collaboration in the region where literature is scarce, as well as the related strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The study draws insights from case studies of eight universities in Eastern, Western, and Northern regions of Africa. Key findings include effective management, stakeholder engagement, and the N-tuple Helix Model, crucial for successful university-industry collaboration that offers many benefits, including improved student employability, technology transfer, innovative research, and industry-aligned curriculum development. However, university-industry collaboration also faces several challenges, such as reduced funding, industry reluctance, and intellectual property protection issues. The study highlights the need for a multifaceted approach to fostering successful university-industry collaboration in African universities, considering institutional, stakeholder, relationship, and output factors. Universities are increasingly considered as crucial actors for innovation and regional development through university-industry collaborations. Extant research suggests that the impact of knowledge transfer is largely related to the multi-dimensional proximities between universities and knowledge recipients. However, majority of them approached the issue of proximity by treating collaborations between universities and their industrial partners as geographically static. Our case study looks at one Chinese research university which adopted an innovative outreach solution by setting up off-campus institutional arrangements to mitigate the problem caused by the geographical constraint, exploring how such entrepreneurial effort can pose an impact on the various dimensions of proximity. By doing so, this paper aims to enrich the knowledge of university entrepreneurship, elucidate the dynamic nature of proximity in the context of university-industry collaborations and draw practical implications for the promotion of such collaborations at large. This article explores the complexities of intangible knowledge transfer in university- industry collaborations, offering a comprehensive view of the current landscape and its future direction. Using a bibliometric and systematic literature review of 1496 articles and 20 selected studies, the research identifies key trends and patterns. Despite differences between academic and practical domains, the study finds that informal networking and personal interactions facilitate mutually beneficial partnerships, regardless of industry type, firm size, or academic specialization. The paper highlights the crucial role of intangible knowledge transfer platforms in fostering effective collaborations and advocates for streamlined protocols to enhance knowledge exchange between academia and businesses. The Maritime Management Program at Nicholls State University produces workforce-ready graduates equipped to meet specific industry needs. The success of this university-industry collaboration (UIC) is the result of practitioner instructors--professionals who actively work in industry involved in curriculum design and delivery. The literature hasn't devoted sufficient attention to the utilization of industry professionals in the classroom. This case study seeks to address this shortcoming. Evidence suggests schools of business are recognizing the disconnect between higher education and industry demands. This can be rectified by adopting a more practical orientation towards servicing industry needs. Designing and delivering a curriculum to meet industry needs is achieved in conjunction with industry and the use of practitioner instructors. More than ever, universities and policymakers are paying attention to faculty members' engagement in industries' projects because university–industry collaboration (UIC) is seen as the key to economic development. However, the UIC differs from country to country, and researchers may have different motivations. This study explored the relationship between university researchers' motivations and varied UIC channels. A questionnaire was administered to the relevant faculty in public universities in two cross-border regions of Portugal and Spain. Drawing on data gathered from 841 researchers, the results reveal differences in these academics' motivations to engage in different channels. Pecuniary motivations (i.e., access to funding and commercialization) drive UIC through joint and contract research, while non-pecuniary motivations (i.e., learning opportunities and access to resources) inhibit cooperation through the same two engagement channels. In addition, joint and contract research involvement also depends on researchers' age, academic status, department size, and field of study. This study provides empirical evidence on the motivations and channels of UIC in two cross-border regions of Portugal and Spain. This bibliometric analysis studied the development trends, publication and citation counts, research themes and trends, and international cooperation models related to university-industry collaboration from 1970 to 2023. Firstly, using a broader set of search terms related to university-industry collaboration, we conducted a comprehensive search of the global literature from 1970 to 2023 in the Web of Science (WoS) database. Secondly, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, we ultimately selected 592 articles for analysis. Subsequently, we used VOSviewer and R-biblioshiny as analytical tools to extract and analyze relevant data from the selected articles. The study identified the most influential institutions, journals, authors, and countries in this field. Additionally, based on keyword co-occurrence analysis, research related to university-industry collaboration is distributed across five clusters: (1) innovation and technology transfer, (2) internships and work experience, (3) cooperative education and learning outcomes, (4) collaboration models and partnerships, and (5) collaboration barriers, challenges, and sustainability. Recent research has focused on themes such as technology transfer, barriers, benefits, and the motivations driving collaboration.

This article offers a comprehensive examination of perspectives on university-industry interactions in Latin America. Distinguishing itself from international reviews, the study employs a systematic review of 274 articles across Scopus, Scielo, and Dialnet databases. The research addresses the temporal evolution, disciplinary fields, conceptual approaches, methods, and prevailing topics in the region. Findings reveal a focus on management, economics, business, social sciences, and engineering disciplines. Qualitative methods dominate, while theoretical-conceptual approaches encompass meso-institutional and micro-interactional levels. Key research themes include collaboration results, knowledge transfer, innovation, technological transfer, and collaboration barriers.

Opportunities to improve students’ civil engineering skills for Industry 4.0 and train them for potential challenges in their professional careers go beyond industry sponsorship of capstone design projects. Students and faculty can benefit from industry mentors’ involvement who can use their expertise in addressing design problems and are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with students. Practicing engineers have a relevant, realistic, real-world viewpoint on their subject and reinforce their relevance to professional engineering practices. Students benefit tremendously from working on real-world problems of interest to industry, business, company-specific project management, product creation processes, and experience with financial, legal, and regulatory design constraints. This paper offers an overview of the multidisciplinary capstone design course in the civil engineering curriculum in Jordan and highlights relevant practices. It provides valuable guidance for incorporating Industry 4.0 skills into the teaching of capstone design courses to deal with challenges related to the context of digital transformation. The paper concludes that industry integration in engineering curriculum can generate multi-skilled and competent engineers with essential cognitive skills such as creativity, complex information processing, and lifelong learning.

Purpose: This study explores practitioners' perspectives on the perceived gap between university and practice beyond the hard and soft skill paradigm. Utilising Tomlinson's graduate capital model of employability (2017), we explored human, social, cultural, and psychological capitals to enrich the understanding of this issue and employability. It provided a new perspective, useful for implementing curriculum renewal. Design/methodology/approach: This study utilised a two-stage mixed methods design. Using Tomlinson's (2017) Graduate capital model as a framework, the first stage involved distributing an online survey to qualified architects in hiring positions practising in Australia. This served as the foundation for generating qualitative and quantitative data. The second stage involved a two-hour practitioner workshop where the survey results were discussed and expanded upon. Findings: Our results found that the practitioner's perspective on the perceived skills gap is more complex than the hard/soft skill paradigm commonly discussed. Practitioners expressed a need for students/graduates to possess identity and cultural capital to contextualise industry norms and expectations. This knowledge lets students know where and how hard/soft skills are used. Our results also suggest practitioners are concerned with the prevailing individualistic approach to the higher education system and traditional architectural teaching methods, instead suggesting a more industry-aligned collaborative disposition. Originality/value: By expanding the employability discourse beyond hard/soft skills, the results of this research provide an opportunity for architectural curriculum renewal in line with industry expectations. The collaboration between university and industry under the institutional arrangement of the University Third Mission has been widely investigated by scholars and, more recently, with an increasing focus on the importance of trust. In this line of research, based on the study of six cases of collaboration in one of the more economically developed regions of Italy, this article aims at analysing how trust is produced – or constructed – by actors involved in the collaborative relationships to identify different processes, factors, dynamics by which such a construction takes place, shape and content, and to discuss its contribution to the rise and maintenance of such collaborations. This paper explores whether university–industry collaboration can facilitate university technology license with the moderating effects of external and internal environments. Here, the university technology license is measured by the license of university non-collaborative-patent. We set up panel data during 2010–2016 of 118 top universities in China and adopted negative binomial regression for empirical analysis. Results show that university–industry collaboration is positively related to non-collaborative-patent license and market for technology has no moderating effect while the R&D strength can moderate the relationship. Specifically, funding has a positive effect on non-collaborative-patent license while research full-time equivalent of R&D personnel negatively moderates the relationship between collaboration and non-collaborative-patent license. This paper creates a new direction to study influencing factors of university technology license from the perspective of collaborators and environment and verified the driving effect of university–industry collaboration on university technology license. Industrial PhD students, affiliating to industrial firms and academic institutions, hold unique boundary‐spanning positions as they engage in knowledge co‐creation through university–industry collaboration (UIC). Despite much research on knowledge transfer processes and boundary spanners in inter‐organizational contexts, firms who engage in UIC remain uncertain about how to reap the benefits of co‐creating knowledge through industrial PhD projects. This paper investigates the enablers of knowledge dissemination for PhD students in industrial firms. Based on a qualitative case study in Sweden, our study identifies enablers and mechanisms related to individual and organizational actions in the internal knowledge dissemination process. Based on the findings, the paper presents a model that distinguishes between surface and deep knowledge dissemination and elaborates on the symbiotic nature of enablers, with middle management mediating between the individual and organizational levels. The paper enhances research on knowledge dissemination in UIC by specifically addressing industrial PhD students' dissemination of co‐created knowledge. The findings inform organizations in managing their expectations, making more informed decisions and improving dissemination conditions for boundary‐spanning industrial PhD students in UIC. Basic innovation, with universities as a key driver, is essential for advancing core technologies in the manufacturing industry. This study used a manufacturing technologies initiative as a natural experiment, combining funding and its outcomes data from the National Natural Science Foundation of China to construct a difference‐in‐differences model. It found that the Frontiers in Manufacturing Technologies Initiative had a positive effect on university innovation, particularly by increasing the number of university patents. Mechanism analysis showed that the policy mainly encouraged university innovation through university‐industry collaboration. The effect was more salient in universities with stronger basic research capabilities and those whose research fields matched strategic emerging industries covered by the initiative. The interaction between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and industry for the purpose of improving the exchange of knowledge and technology refers to the concept of universities–industry collaboration (UIC). This research aims to identify the Determinants of UIC in Oman by considering the four main players in UIC, which are faculty, students, university administrators and Private Sector Companies. Furthermore, the study focuses on determining the factors for an academic research project to become relevant to Oman’s private sector. This study adopts a quantitative research approach using structured surveys and statistical analysis to systematically investigate the relationships and associations among various factors. The sample size consists of 218 participants, including 32 faculty members, 158 students, 3 university administrators, and 25 representatives from private sector companies. The sampling technique is convenient to ensure the practical considerations associated with accessing and engaging diverse stakeholders from the targeted population. Determinants of UIC in Oman include financial support, trust, research alignment, governmental support, and communication. Consistent with the literature, there is a moderate level of consensus among the respondents regarding the importance of various determinants in promoting UIC in Oman. Also, the multidimensional nature of collaboration has been highlighted through factor analysis. For research relevance, the main contributors are strategic alignment, industry expertise integration, and researcher recognition and incentives, emphasizing interconnected relationships. Limitations include the focus of the study on Oman, which may limit generalizability. The research provides actionable insights for Oman’s UIC, guiding policymakers in formulating targeted strategies. Informed resource allocation optimizes efforts for both universities and private sector organizations. Tailored initiatives, researcher incentives, and continuous monitoring enhance inclusivity and engagement. This study advances UIC by offering insights into the determinants for effective collaboration between academia and the private sector. The practical value of the study lies in providing stakeholders with strategic guidelines for impactful partnerships.

Abstract University–Industry Collaborations (UIC) are increasingly recognized as crucial drivers of economic growth and development. While numerous studies have been conducted on this topic, this paper specifically focuses on UIC in the Arab World. The aim of this study is to explore the establishment of successful UIC by conducting a review of existing literature to identify and synthesize key factors that enable collaborative innovation between industry and universities. The findings are summarized into six main themes: the importance of UIC, barriers to UIC, gaps between universities and industry in the Arab World, partnerships and sustainable growth, current trends and perspectives, and future agenda for Arab countries. These themes are elaborated on and used to summarize results from the reviewed studies regarding facilitators of collaborative innovation. The contribution of this work lies in enhancing the existing body of literature and knowledge regarding collaboration between higher education and industry in the Arab World. This research presents specific measures that can be implemented to ensure successful UIC in the future. Its outcomes are significant for policymakers, academics, and industry experts in the Arab region, who aspire to form productive UIC partnerships that encourage economic development and innovation.

Students' perceived employability (SPE) can be seen as one of the indicators of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) quality. However, less is known about the determining factors of SPE in vocational education. As the founder of modern vocational education in China, Yanpei Huang has written a large volume on ensuring students' employability and the quality culture of TVET. Nowadays, as the feature and nature of TVET, university-industry collaboration (UIC) has been promoted worldwide. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the influence of quality culture from Yanpei Huang's perspective (YHQC) on the SPE and the UIC role in the relationship between YHQC and SPE in a TVET university in China. Data were collected by questionnaire from 341 students from one vocational education university in China. The questionnaire included measures of quality culture, perceived employability, and UIC. The Structural Equation Modelling by AMOS 25 was used to test the proposed hypothesis. The results indicate that YHQC acts as a significant factor in enhancing SPE, and UIC is found to act as a partial mediator in this relationship. This study has contributed to the literature and practices by presenting a comprehensive quality culture from Yanpei Huang's perspective, confirming the above relationship, and providing practical suggestions for stakeholders to develop a quality culture in TVET institutes, promote UIC, and enhance SPE. Providing evidence of the impact of university–industry (U–I) partnerships is challenging. This empirical research contributes to this thought-provoking subject area by developing an impact assessment framework to assess the effect of collaboration between university and industry. This is examined through a multiple case study approach: 13 partnership schemes, each of two years duration, in manufacturing and healthcare. This study demonstrates that effective knowledge transfer from universities to enterprises is not only hypothetically feasible, but also realistically tangible and measurable. It explores how Business and Management Schools transfer knowledge and technology through external interventions and formal partnership schemes. Our findings show that impact and knowledge transfer can be evaluated, but requires active facilitation before, during and after the project, plus a level of openness and expert engagement within the partnerships. Additionally, our findings established that healthcare partnerships generated higher perceived levels of impact than manufacturing. This perhaps indicates that further work is necessary to resolve the issues limiting the productivity gains of manufacturing partnerships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

University‐business collaborations (UBCs) are widely recognised as a key component within the sustainability effort, yet the literature on how we articulate the value which collaborations contribute towards a wider sustainable regional development agenda remains fragmented and disorganised, lacking synthesis and cumulativeness. Based on a recognised need to critically assess the state of the field, this paper presents a systematic review of a wide body of literature that seeks to evaluate the contribution of UBCs to sustainable regional development. Using a lens of place and knowledge, 131 articles are analysed and a framework is developed based on emerging categories of localism/universalism and pluralism/sovereignty. The framework provides a basis for both navigating approaches to evaluation, as well as enabling both researchers and practitioners to engage in more constructive discussions around the challenges and opportunities when evaluating UBCs in the wider context of place‐based government agendas for sustainable regional development. Despite the importance of low-tech manufacturing sectors for national economies, previous studies on UIC benefits for the firms were conducted mostly in high-tech sectors, making the knowledge on the impact of UIC on innovation in low-tech sectors unexplored. The present research aims to identify combinations of UIC s that may lead the low-tech firms to high innovation performance. By using the csQCA technique applied to secondary data from the BR Survey, which is the largest UIC databank in Brazil, the researchers identified that the most intense collaborations in terms of knowledge and resource exchange, such as development-oriented and research-oriented, are among the most beneficial for firms' innovativeness. Diffusion-oriented UIC does not contribute to innovation, unless it is combined with both research-oriented and development-oriented UIC s. Finally, the csQCA suggests that in most cases the firms should focus on engaging in one specific UIC type rather than split its effort and resources among a mix of UIC. By facilitating the capture, organization, and dissemination of knowledge within and beyond the institution, knowledge management (KM) in higher education institutions (HEIs) fuels innovation, enhances research impact, and strengthens collaboration, ultimately leading to the creation of new knowledge and its valuable exchange. However, there is still much to explore in terms of the enablers of knowledge creation, sharing, and transfer. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the enablers of effective KM in the Polytechnique University of Leiria, which serves as a benchmark for other higher education institutions due to its leadership role in RUN-EU, a consortium of European universities. To achieve this, a narrative analysis based on information from SCOPUS and the institute's website, focusing on innovation, research, and development strategies, is proposed. The findings suggest that for KM initiatives to be successful, they need to be strategically designed, culturally supported, technologically enabled, and integrated into existing workflows. This study identifies and discusses strategies for enhancing the efficiency of technology transferring from university to the industrial sector, concerning activities carried out by Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs). The study answers two research questions: (i) What barriers hamper academic research transferring to industry? (ii) What are the inbound and outbound strategies for transferring academic research results to industry? Our findings show that the main barriers that hamper technology transfer are related to organisational, technical, human, and cultural factors comprising the academic and industrial environments. Regarding strategies, our findings reveal a comprehensive list of inbound and outbound strategies that might be implemented to cope with the ambidextrous nature of the TTOs and increase technology transfer. This paper explores the extent to which firms perceive to benefit from university‐industry collaborations in their innovation processes, building on survey data from 232 Norwegian firms. We find that firms experience not only direct innovation benefits from collaborations, but also indirect benefits in the form of closer proximity to universities, which can in turn improve future collaboration. We compare the reported outputs from various types of collaboration, finding that firms engaging mainly in research‐oriented interactions more often report that collaborations result in innovation than those engaging in education‐oriented or more informal collaborations. However, education‐oriented and informal collaborations are equally important for building cognitive, organizational, institutional and social proximities between firms and universities. The ATTRACT NEXT project examined the potential of experimentation – particularly the use of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) – to enhance university–industry collaboration, a policy field in which such methods have been underutilized to date. This project has led to the development of a Handbook on Experiments in University–Industry Collaboration, which identifies critical challenges in university–industry collaborations and proposes testable experimental ideas for interventions. A learning and support programme, the University–Industry Impact Accelerator, then facilitated the design and piloting of three experimental interventions addressing motivation, capacity-building, and relationship development between researchers and businesses. The results indicate that structured experimentation can yield actionable insights, improve engagement strategies, and optimize programme effectiveness. The NEXT initiative has demonstrated the feasibility and value of embedding experimentation within university–industry collaborations, aiming to foster more robust, evidence-based policy-making and programme implementation in the policy space.

Abstract This paper focuses on the social benefits of university-industry collaborations (UICs) based on the cases of winners of the Industry-Academia Collaboration Prize presented by the UK Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) (2010–2023). The research question, which concerns the social and environmental benefits of UICs, has received little attention in the literature, as it focuses mainly on their economic effects. Taking the framework approach to thematic analysis, a list of thematic indicators, which serve as benchmark criteria for evaluating the social impact of UICs in medical, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, is developed. The use of a case study to identify indicators via this approach is appropriate for generating in-depth insights into the characteristics of UICs that have considerable societal impacts. Knowledge creation and contribution to training and improved skills levels constitute the main social benefits of UICs in the three industries cited above. Our findings have practical and theoretical implications, as they emphasize the importance of UICs in fulfilling a specific function in society, namely, facilitating research and developing skills that make the world a better place.
