Abstract

We measured the Josephson vortex flow resistance as a function of magnetic field applied parallel to the ab-planes using annealed Y1Ba2Cu3Ox intrinsic Josephson junctions having high anisotropy (around 40) by oxygen content reduction. Periodic oscillations were observed in magnetic fields above 45-58 kOe, corresponding to dense-dilute boundary for Josephson vortex lattice. The observed period of oscillations, agrees well with the increase of one fluxon per two junctions ($H_{p}$\textit{=$\Phi $}$_{0}$\textit{/2Ls}), may correspond to formation of a triangular lattice of Josephson vortices as has been reported by Ooi et al. for highly anisotropic (larger than 200) Bi-2212 intrinsic Josephson junctions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

To investigate in-phase structures (rectangular lattice) of Josephson vortex lattice (JVL) in intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d, we fabricated IJJs with various lateral sizes down to a size of non-linear core of Josephson vortex using focused-ion-beam etching and measured flux flow resistance (RFF) with in-plane magnetic fields (H). We have found that above a size-independent critical field, the critical current shows Fraunhofer pattern in narrow-length IJJs (0.29-2.77 mm), and then the RFF~H oscillates with H0 period. Most strikingly, such oscillations become pulse-like in sub-micron IJJs, indicating that between the pulses, the rectangular JVLs become major structures., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We have experimentally investigated the fluxon dynamics in a narrow Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d stack with junction length L~1.8 um. As an evidence of high-frequency excitation by a collective cavity mode, under an (in-plane) external magnetic field, the current-voltage characteristics show prominent Fiske steps with the corresponding resonance frequencies of 75-305 GHz. Further study of flux-flow resistance oscillation with various c-axis currents clarifies the correlation with Fiske steps by distinguishing two different regions i.e., static flux-flow region at low bias current level and dynamic Fiske step region at high bias current level., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Talaromyces spp. have a worldwide distribution, are ecologically diverse and have been isolated from numerous different substrates. Talaromyces spp. are considered biotechnologically important due to their ability to produce a range of enzymes and pigments. Talaromyces pinophilus, belonging to genus Talaromyces and family Trichocomaceae, is known for producing several important bioactive metabolites. Here we report the isolation and characterisation of a partitivirus from T. pinophilus which we have nominated Talaromyces pinophilus partitivirus-1 (TpPV-1). TpPV-1 possesses a genome consisting of three double stranded (ds) RNA segments i.e., dsRNAs1-3, 1824 bp, 1638 bp and 1451 bp respectively, which are encapsidated in icosahedral particles 35 nm in diameter. Both dsRNA1 and dsRNA2 contain a single open reading frame (ORF) encoding respectively a 572 amino acid (aa) protein of 65 kDa and a 504 aa protein of 50 kDa. The third segment (dsRNA3) is potentially a satellite RNA. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the TpPV-1 belongs to the family Partitiviridae in the proposed genus Zetapartitivirus. TpPV-1 infection decreases the mycelial growth rate of the host fungus and alters pigmentation as indicated by time course experiments performed on a range of different solid media comparing virus-infected and virus-free isogenic lines. This is the first report of mycovirus infection in T. pinophilus and may provide insights into understanding the effect of the mycovirus on the production of enzymes and pigments by the host fungus.

Abstract

Objective: To clarify the clinical usefulness of preoperative fibre-tracking in affected pyramidal tracts for intraoperative monitoring during the removal of brain tumours from patients with motor weakness.Methods: We operated on 10 patients with mild to moderate motor weakness caused by brain tumours located near the pyramidal tracts under local anaesthesia. Before surgery, we performed fibre-tracking imaging of the pyramidal tracts and then transferred this information to the neuronavigation system. During removal of the tumour, motor function was evaluated with motor evoked potentials elicited by cortical/subcortical electrical stimulation and with voluntary movement.Results: In eight patients, the locations of the pyramidal tracts were estimated preoperatively by fibre-tracking; motor evoked potentials were elicited on the motor cortex and subcortex close to the predicted pyramidal tracts. In the remaining two patients, in which fibre-tracking of the pyramidal tracts revealed their disruption surrounding the tumour, cortical/subcortical electrical stimulation did not elicit responses clinically sufficient to monitor motor function. In all cases, voluntary movement with mild to moderate motor weakness was extensively evaluated during surgery and was successfully preserved postoperatively with appropriate tumour resection.Conclusions: Preoperative fibre-tracking could predict the clinical usefulness of intraoperative electrical stimulation of the motor cortex and subcortical fibres (ie, pyramidal tracts) to preserve affected motor function during removal of brain tumours. In patients for whom fibre-tracking failed preoperatively, awake surgery is more appropriate to evaluate and preserve moderately impaired muscle strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: To describe a series of adult patients with annular pancreas, their presentation, and treatment modalities. Method: A retrospective chart review of patients seen at a multispecialty referral center from 1977 to 1994. Results: Seven adult patients (ages ranging from 33 to 77 yr, four females and three males) presented with various symptoms and signs: abdominal pain (six patients) gastric outlet obstruction (two), pancreatitis (two), pancreatic mass (two), gastric/duodenal ulcer (one), and/or postoperative obstructive jaundice (one). The duration of symptoms ranged from 1 wk to 16 yr before diagnosis (median 18 months). Upper GI radiography was consistent with annular pancreas in two cases, CT scan in two cases (neither of which actually depleted the annulus), and four of six successful endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographies. Three patients were diagnosed during operative procedures. Five of the seven patients required therapeutic operative procedures that included transduodenal sphincteroplasty, duodenojejunostomy, gastrojejunostomy, subtotal gastrectomy, or Whipple procedure. Four of the five had significant symptomatic relief. In one case, endoscopic sphincterotomy and biliary stent placement was therapeutic. Conclusions: 1) Annular pancreas occasionally presents in the adult population. 2) Although gastric outlet obstruction was seen in two of seven patients, a plethora of additional presentations included pancreatic mass, pancreatitis, peptic ulcer disease, and post-operative obstructive jaundice. 3) Diagnosis of annular pancreas was most commonly suggested by upper GI series or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. However, fully 40% of diagnoses required surgery, for confirmation. 4) In contrast to the pediatric population in whom gastrojejunostomy or duodenojejunostomy is the treatment of choice, a variety of surgical as well as interventional endoscopic procedures were utilized for effective treatment in a...
