Abstract Despite the growing interest in the migration of older adults in China, the intricacies linking migration motivations with destination choices remain insufficiently explored. Drawing from China’s unique context, we categorize inter-provincial older migrants into three types: employment-led, dependent, and lifestyle. Using microdata from the Sixth Population Census of 2010 and the 1% Population Sampling Survey of 2015, we examine their evolving motivations and corresponding shifts in destination preferences. The analysis shows an increase in lifestyle-oriented migration and a decrease in dependent migration, while employment-led migration has remained stable relative to the total. Older migrants seeking employment tend to favor destinations further south, prioritizing regional economic conditions. In contrast, those motivated by lifestyle factors exhibit a broader range of destination choices, largely due to their preference for amenities. Dependent older adult migrants consider both job-related and amenity-related factors and demonstrate a stronger tendency to relocate to the east. Amenity-related factors have increasingly influenced the destination choices across all three types of migration over time. Our findings provide deeper insights into the intricacies of migration in old adulthood and highlight the need for tailored policymaking.

Abstract In examining visa-waiver agreements, previous studies have primarily focused on economic motivations and effects. In this article, we explore the potential political motivations and consequences. Particularly, we propose that there is a positive relationship between visa-waivers and democracy. We test this using a global dataset that records bilateral travel visa requirements for all countries between 1973 and 2013. We find support for our main hypothesis. We also examine the relationship between democracy, visa waivers and economic development. Contrary to our expectations, we find that democracy continues to exert influence on visa waivers even at high levels of income. Non-democracies fail to attain visa waivers even when they are wealthy. Finally, we explore whether visa waivers could have an impact on individuals’ attitudes towards democracy. Using survey data from 18 Latin American countries, we find suggestive evidence that that visa-waivers can have a positive impact on individuals’ democratic attitudes. Taken together, the findings suggest that democracy and visa-waivers might have a mutually reinforcing relationship.

Abstract As migrant integration policies touch upon almost all spheres of citizens’ life, collaboration across policy levels as well as across policy domains is needed. Over time, a series of both policy and analytical paradigms on the integration of migrants emerged, going from the traditional ideas of differentialism and assimilation, over multiculturalism, interculturalism, integrationism, liberal egalitarianism and mainstreaming, up to superdiversity and intersectionality. While networks for integration policies are likely to be at least partly driven by these paradigms, recent studies seem to nuance this assumption based on so called paradigmatic pragmatism, meaning that cities draw on a variety of ideas and pragmatically combine them under the header of diversity policies. The need for multi-level and multi-actor governance on migrant integration, the theoretical knowledge about homophily in organizational networks, and the recent findings on paradigmatic pragmatism, raise the question to what extent collaboration between public and non-profit organizations active around migrant integration is based on a shared policy paradigm on the integration of migrants. This question is answered based on a multiple case study of four central cities in Flanders (Belgium), covering 1.403 organizations. In the quantitative and qualitative (social network) analyses, comparisons along both the axes of cities and policy domains are made. Findings contribute to literature on organizational homophily, showing that clustering of organizations is likely to be at least partly driven by policy paradigm on integration. This is however nuanced by the observation that policy paradigms appear to be ambiguous, which in turn reveals opportunities for more flexible collaborations between actors and for avoiding deadlocks in policy making.

Smart living appears as the most important domain of a smart city, and many studies propose that it is synonymous with resident quality of life. The main aims of this research were to understand better residents’ perceptions of quality-of-life issues and priorities in smart cities. The study (re)defines smart living using domains and indicators that were carefully selected from a systematic literature review, a close analysis of previous studies and their methodologies, and a pilot test of a questionnaire in Budapest, Hungary. The research is considered timely because of Budapest’s relatively low performance in quality-of-life rankings in Europe and the lack of data on the needs of citizens. The main domains of smart living and their relevant indicators include housing, health, safety, education, environment, social cohesion, leisure, culture and tourism. Overall, the research aims to assist urban researchers and city agencies in the development of indicators of smart living when measuring resident quality of life. The results could be applicable to other post-socialist cities which have followed similar trajectories to Budapest, but the results are useful for almost any city that hopes to enhance quality of life by prioritising smart living.

Southeast Europe is considered a traditional emigration region in the past and present. Our study looks to the future, and it focuses on migration intentions there. The representative database of the OeNB Euro Survey offers the opportunity to analyse both large- and small-scale as well as group-specific differentiations beyond the question of the potential for future mobility in Southeast Europe. It became evident that migration intentions are still high. It can be seen that pure intentions are often accompanied by concrete plans. The age and level of education as well as a lack of trust in the government policy are important determining factors. The preference for Germany as a destination country in the postYugoslav region indicates the persistence of networks from the Gastarbeiter era. From a spatial perspective, it is also clear that it is mainly the deprived regions of Southeastern Europe where migration intentions are strong. However, the affected sub-regions are not necessarily those in which the plans are very concrete, i.e. there is often a considerable gap between aspirations and capabilities. The long-term and sustainable effects of the migration that is expected to continue, with the corresponding consequences for demographics, education, labour force and social infrastructures, remain problematic.

Environmental health studies and practices tend to prioritise health and hygiene, with environmental sanitation, which encompasses behaviour and sanitation facilities, representing a significant concern in environmental health risks. Nevertheless, numerous studies have demonstrated that the physical components of buildings exert an impact on environmental health status. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the physical components of buildings influence environmental health risks and they can be incorporated as additional variables in the development of a more precise, valid, and comprehensive environmental health risk assessment model. In this study, a multistage random sampling technique was employed to obtain a total sample of 400 households. This study is a second-order construct that was measured formatively using an embedded two-stage approach. The findings of this study indicate that the physical component of the building has a significant effect on environmental health risks. This is indicated by the path coefficient value of 0.249. The most influential components are bedroom windows, floor type, ceiling, wall type, roof type, living room windows, occupancy density, temperature, humidity, and temperature. By identifying these neglected health risk factors, governments, health institutions, and communities can develop more effective and efficient strategies for mitigating environmental health risks.

The conservation and sustainable development of historic urban landscapes (HUL) are imperative in the face of rapid urbanisation. This study, based on Jiaxiulou in Guiyang City, China, examines the dimensions of cultural identity (CI) in HUL. Using a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach, a three-dimensional model of CI is validated, comprising cognitive, emotional, and behavioural aspects. Results show that while cognitive understanding of HUL is essential, it alone does not directly influence the residents' emotions and behaviours. Pride in cultural heritage emerges as a significant driver of CI, impacting the residents' perceptions and behaviours. Conversation behaviour is identified as a primary expression of CI. Recommendations are proposed to integrate local values into urban planning, to enhance public participation, and to provide diverse cultural activities for the residents, highlighting the importance of social engagement in shaping CI. This study contributes to understanding the complexity of CI and its role in HUL conservation and sustainable development.

Roma is the largest minority in Europe and the problems considering its segregation have to be investigated. The main goal of the present paper is to realise a bibliometric analysis which is going to find: the primary authors who investigated the topic of Roma segregation and the ghettoized urban structures; their publishing interactions based on factors such as their affiliation with the research organisation, and their country; and the most cited publications. The bibliometric analysis is based on the Scopus database. 265 selected documents, published between January 1999 and December 2023, were analysed. The papers of researchers from the United Kingdom, Hungary and Romania are the most cited. The cooccurrence analysis showed that, logically, the word “Roma” is the keyword with the greatest total link strength. The study also gives an insight into the collaboration between the main researchers, scientific organisations, and countries.

The Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) is used as an empirical case to demonstrate how a relatively small transit operator in the Richmond, Virginia, United States (RVA) region survived and thrived during the COVID19 pandemic period. During that time, GRTC experienced a substantial downturn in its system transit ridership. In response to this emergency, GRTC immediately took bold measures to protect its operators and riders, such as: serving essential trips, improving bus interior seat design, modifying operating schedules, matching service with the demand, implementing new boarding process, offering free transit services, broadening funding sources, and others. As a result, GRTC successfully and quickly overcame the pandemic crisis, and it embarked on the road to full recovery in its transit operation. In the post-pandemic future, GRTC expects that many of the adopted pandemic workplace safety and cleaning protocols will continue long-term as it takes time to rebuild people’s trust in public transit. The successful lessons (in particular, in four areas: putting people’s safety first; giving priority to serving essential trips; using a dynamic scheduling approach; and increasing and diversifying its funding sources) from GRTC could also be transferable to other similar transit services in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Abstract Amidst the persistent urban expansion in European cities, the need for high-quality housing for growing populations remains a challenge. Integrating newly developed housing areas into the urban fabric and fostering a distinct local identity pose additional challenges. Despite extensive research in this realm, there exists a gap in the examination of the extent of shared space utilization in new housing developments. This study fills that gap by analyzing the quantity, quality, and diversity of space utilization in new housing projects, focusing on the development processes and maintenance methods. The research, conducted through site and case study analyses of Sonnwendviertel Ost development area in Vienna, underscores that the shared utilization of spaces is closely tied to distinct housing models with varied levels of financing and involvement of diverse actors. Consequently, it provides insights into the housing models and their configurations that best facilitate the development of shared use of spaces in housing construction. This, in turn, is perceived as instrumental in cultivating a more robust neighborhood identity and enhancing the livability of communities, thereby contributing to sustainable urban development.

Abstract As images of international mobility circulate quickly and widely through digital and social media, they form a fundamental part of the discursive formations around border policies and material migration practices. Through a multi-modal visual analysis of the Twitter images accompanying the post of the four major migration institutions in the EU and Canada, this article explores in a comparative perspective how their visual narratives interact with the broader migration narrative across the two contexts. The study findings show that EUAA, FRONTEX, CBSA, and IRCC participate in the border spectacle as leading actors, and their visual communication while allows them to reinforce some of their respective migration governance key messages and display their multiple organizational identities at the same time enables the concealment of some of the critical themes of the EU and Canada migration governance.

Abstract The concept of happiness is becoming an increasingly significant area of focus in the evaluation of overall quality of life. This research examines the impact of migration on the well-being of women who remain in their place of residence following the migration of their family members. The study employs data from the Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (2017–2018) in Punjab, Pakistan, and addresses sample selection bias through Propensity Score Matching (PSM). Moreover, as the dependent variable is ordinal, the study employed ordered logistic regression to examine the correlation between migration and happiness, taking into account migration status and other variables. The findings indicate that women from migrant backgrounds tend to benefit from migrating, primarily in terms of enhanced financial resources. In order to gain insight into the varying effects of migration on women’s happiness, the study employed heterogeneity analysis, which revealed that the influence of migration on women’s happiness differs across various areas. In conclusion, the combination of propensity score matching (PSM) with ordered logistic regression and heterogeneity analysis represents a robust methodology for evaluating the impact of migration on women’s perceptions of happiness. The study demonstrates that migration has the potential to improve the quality of life of women who remain in their home countries, particularly those residing in financially disadvantaged households.

Abstract This paper focusses on the complex relationship between vacancy, temporary responses and uncertainty during turbulent times by analysing how a selection of cities—New York City, São Paulo, Milan, Moscow, Abu Dhabi, Esfahan, Karachi, Mumbai and Jakarta—addressed testing, treating, isolating and vaccinating the public in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. These highly visible spatial responses offer immediate, pragmatic answers to unexpected conditions and, we argue, allow a more nuanced understanding of how planning might leverage flexibility and adaptability in a (post-)pandemic world.

Abstract Implementation gaps in the areas of naturalization and immigrant regularization emerge through a mismatch between the documents a residence country requires, and the documents that refugees and migrants can realistically provide. Those caught in this gap may live undocumented or risk statelessness. Residence countries can close such paperwork gaps by adapting legal interpretations and easing administrative requirements. When Colombia faced large-scale international displacement from Venezuela, state actors identified documentation-based implementation gaps in its nationality law and regularization procedures; they then took an innovative – yet not faultless – approach by adapting its citizenship and immigration regimes to accommodate displaced Venezuelans. These changes strengthened access to essential rights and increased the well-being of many. In this article, we develop the concepts of paperwork gaps and paper bridges and discuss the actors, impact, and limitations of Colombia’s policy innovations in the areas of nationality by birth, naturalization, and regularization based on research conducted from 2020 to 2023. The study advances the literature on government learning regarding policies within citizenship and immigration regimes that target internationally displaced populations.

Abstract Solar energy has become a prominent and crucial source of clean energy due to the increasing global demand for electricity. There is a prevailing global trend towards the construction of solar farms as a means of energy generation. This study aims to assess multiple criteria encompassing urban, environmental, and social aspects in order to ascertain the optimal site for constructing solar farms. The evaluation primarily focuses on characteristics such as topography, solar radiation, accessibility, land use, and proximity to roads and power stations. In order to acquire the necessary spatial fit model, the data was evaluated utilizing a Geographic Information System (GIS) program, and the criteria were subsequently consolidated into an integrated geographic information system. A comprehensive review of the existing body of literature reveals that environmental factors, specifically solar radiation and aspect, play a crucial role in determining the suitable places for the establishment of solar energy collection projects (Merrouni et al. in Energy Procedia 49:2270-2279, 2013; McKinney in J Student Res Environ Sci Appalac 4:1-14, 2014). Furthermore, other analysis factors such as proximity to built-up regions, closeness to power lines, and proximity to roadways are taken into account (Hott et al. in GIS-based Spatial Analysis For LargeScale Solar Power And Transmission Line Issues: Case Study of Wyoming, U.S. In: Proceedings of the 41st American Solar Energy Society Meeting, 2012; Effat in Int J Adv Remote Sens GIS 2:205-220, 2013). These criteria have an impact on the cost of solar farms. The objective of this study was to assess several aspects influencing the selection of an optimal location for a solar energy farm, taking into consideration the aforementioned criteria. The study was carried out in New Aswan city, utilizing data obtained from the Urban Planning Authority within the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the New Aswan City AuthorityI generated cartographic representations and compiled quantitative data, which informed our selection of places that met the established criteria through the utilization of a Geographic Information System (GIS) software. Upon the conclusion of the study, numerous locations that satisfied the established criteria were selected. The present study focuses on regions with high capacity, and the findings are depicted in the form of spatial and objective maps. One of the primary benefits associated with the utilization of this methodology lies in its versatility, as it can be implemented across several domains. Furthermore, a straightforward adjustment of the criteria facilitates its application in the selection of optimal locations for wind farms.

Abstract Migration forecasts are crucial for proactive immigration and integration management. While the demand for accurate migration forecasts continues to grow, the current state of migration forecasting is still unsatisfactory, because they tend to lack precision. We introduce an alternative method to forecast migration movements: prediction markets. While prediction markets are mainly unknown in migration studies, they are established in the political economy of forecasting election outcomes. For its application to a complex phenomenon in a more constrained information environment such as migration movements, we argue that prediction markets allow to balance complementarities of current qualitative and quantitative approaches if they provide solutions to avoid thin trading and integrate expert knowledge into the market. We apply the prediction market to forecast immigration in four West European countries in 2020 and find encouraging results. We discuss the strengths and limitations of prediction markets to migration forecasting, including ethical considerations, and guide its future application.

Abstract Resettlement to a third country offers a durable solution for refugees who cannot integrate into their asylum or transit countries. While most studies focus on the experiences of refugees after their arrival in resettlement countries or on the political aspects of resettlement, fewer studies explore refugees’ perspectives prior to resettlement. This paper examines how Rohingyas in Malaysia view their resettlement opportunities. We collected qualitative micronarratives from 56 adult Rohingyas living in Malaysia between March and September 2019, to explore the complexities of their decision-making processes. The findings indicate that most Rohingyas aspire to resettle in another country to gain legal status or citizenship, providing a better future for their children, including access to education and healthcare. However, preferences among Rohingyas vary: while some are eager to resettle, others express a strong desire to return to their home country in Myanmar. Still, others wish to reunite with family in Myanmar or Bangladesh, and a significant minority are reluctant to resettle in non-Islamic countries, reflecting broader concerns about cultural and religious compatibility. This study highlights the varied resettlement preferences among Rohingyas, underscoring the need for resettlement policies to consider these diverse priorities to enhance the effectiveness of resettlement programs.

Abstract This research delves into the evolution of Istanbul’s urban agenda, which has become increasingly intricate due to recent challenges. The city's planning paradigm has undergone a discernible shift, with heightened attention concerns like seismic resilience, sustainability, and the climate-change. The planning projections for the city have experienced significant changes, by the earthquakes 1999 and 2023, climate-change, and the pandemic in 2020. Although the pandemic is considered temporary, it has significant in bringing sustainable matters like living airier, greener areas, back to the city planning. In response to the latest challenges, particularly the earthquake, the city confronted an ecological dilemma, prompting proposal to relocate new housing areas to the Northern-forest. The city's northern development axis, planned a century ago by the French architect-urbanist Henri Prost, is being questioned today end to its limits for green-areas. Based on ongoing global discussion, on academical circles on the imperative, the historic city of Istanbul grapples with the contemporary problems sustainability and seismic considerations in its future planning endeavors. This study engages in discursive analyses while concurrently offering practical recommendations to address sustainability through the development of specific zoning arrangements focuses on dual research axis urban-based, and housing-based, laws, and regulations, also housing model, and typologies as missing part of the previous research. This study principally examines this problematic via zoning practices of Istanbul in the Henri Prost period from housing areas to the housing models and typologies. Also, globally, along with the new zoning, the old zoning laws, and regulations can be bring the agenda again in the context of sustainability to promote a balanced relationship between human, nature and sustainability goals. In conclusion, amid the recent challenges in the city, innovative suggestions for advanced zoning applications in pursuit of sustainability reveal a notable gap in the protection of green-areas, planning new settlements. Henri Prost’s master plans stand out for employing distinctive zoning techniques for each district, also offering specific housing models and typologies. Extending this methodology to green-areas presents a bridge the existing void. By presented potential case scenarios at the end of the study emphasizing the merits of integrating historical zoning practices into contemporary planning, it aims to stimulate discussions on holistic and forward-looking urban development strategies.

Abstract Extant literature shows that well-being is one of the key drivers of attitudes towards migrants as well as preferences for asylum and refugee policies. Less in is known, however, about the relationship between well-being and attitudes towards migrants during sudden micro-level events that may elicit the sense of existential threat. To investigate the underpinnings of these relationships, two studies on samples of 600 Slovaks each were conducted before the Russian invasion of Ukraine and during its initial phase. The results show that well-being had a stable positive relationship with attitudes towards migrants across the studies, albeit not with preferences for asylum and refugee policies. During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the negative feelings elicited by the war predicted preferences for asylum and refugee policies beyond well-being. The results indicate that incorporating psychological factors, such as emotional responses to the looming threat of war, may considerably inform the debate surrounding the support for inclusive asylum and refugee policies.

Housing is vital to human experience. It is the basis and foci of daily activities. In Asaba, a strategically located, fast-growing metropolis, city officials are confronted by myriads of urban planning issues, one of which is provision of urban housing. This study attempted to identify the determinants of housing demands and costs of residential rents within the city (Asaba). In this study, the ex-post facto and survey designs were deployed. The data for the study comprised of the primary (questionnaire data) and secondary (historical housing data) types. For effective questionnaire administration, the study area was stratified into high, medium and low income areas. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient were deployed for data analyses. The results indicated that the key determinants of residential housing demand and costs were ease of access to public transport (69 %), nearness to security formations (80 %) and higher demand for houses in supply (75.8 %); and the Spearman's rank correlation showed that these factors were significant at P < 0.05. Other factors such as availability of electricity and access to water supply were not significant determinants of choice of housing at P > 0.05. This is due to the fact that the whole region lacks adequate electricity supply and water is self-harnessed through boreholes. ANOVA showed that there was a significant temporal variation in the cost of residential housing rents at p < 0.05 (F-69.03; sig 0.000). Consequently, this study recommends that there is need for the decentralisation of the city; which should be realised by an efficient development of the suburbs to high standards that would meet the requirements of prospective renters. Policy development and establishment of basic facilities in the suburbs, would help actualise this decentralization. Also, collaboration between government and private developers could yield more supply in the housing stuck, consequently reducing costs of housing.

Despite years of investment into the water sector in Ghana, access to and expenditure on potable water for drinking and domestic use remain a challenge for most urban households. However, within the urban context, the severity of water challenges varies from one residential community to another, with less research attention often given to such intra-urban differences. To address this gap, this study examines differences in household access and expenditure on pipe-borne water in three varying socio-economic residential communities in Accra. The study used a convergent mixed method design and drew on secondary literature, to examine the differences in households' access to and expenditure on water. The findings revealed that Jamestown, a low-income residential community, had the lowest connection to the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) grid, with many respondents depending on pipe-borne water outside dwellings operated by private water retailers. While the findings showed no significant differences in the regularity of flow and expenditure on water among the three varying socio-economic communities, the paper argues that low-income communities such as Jamestown are likely to be more affected due to existing socio-economic deprivation and vulnerability contexts. Based on the study findings, we recommend that efforts be made to increase investment in water infrastructure to enable households to connect to the GWCL grid. Attention should also be given to low-income households, who often lack the means to pay for services that will enable them to connect to the GWCL grid. Further, we recommend improved collaboration between local communities and GWCL as a way of fostering strategies that address the peculiar water challenges in local communities.

As cities are developing to smart, new systems are utilized that contain a multitude of critical infrastructures. Although these offer major advantages, they are also exposed to new external and frequently uncontrollable factors increasing their risk exposure and enhancing their vulnerability. Therefore, increasing resilience during city development has become a prerequisite for its survival, but continuous resilience improvement led by workforce will help them to prosper. According to researchers, officers should be able to catalogue and prioritize threats and vulnerabilities, but is this only the case? Discrete studies detail and analyze in-depth risks related to smart cities, however, how these risks are addressed by workforce and how these are related to their competencies have not been thoroughly understood to date. If vulnerabilities are not understood and analyzed appropriately by the city workforce and stakeholders, unanticipated consequences and cascading failures may potential occur, even when crises are expected. The objective of this article is to inquire into responsibilities regarding crisis issues concerning the necessary competencies for resilience officers, by exploring current perceptions, expectations and recommendations as these are acknowledged in experts’ opinions and experiences. To do so, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to experts in the field, across various cities in Greece, to indicate responsibilities, and prioritize competencies that resilient officers in smart cities should possess. The findings highlighted significant responsibilities related to managing smart city risks and identified a distinct set of competencies unique to officers in this area, emphasizing the need for targeted efforts to enhance urban resilience through the initiatives led by city officers. This article establishes a clear path for advancing smart city research by highlighting competencies that could be integrated into educational curriculums. These competencies are essential for training a workforce that not only enhances disaster management awareness but also equips cities to handle potential catastrophic events effectively, thereby laying the groundwork for more resilient urban environments.

This study seeks to address the relational impact of educational institution on the spatiotemporal growth of Ekpoma town. It examines the “urban growth” effects that the tertiary institution has on its site location. Landsat Imageries of Ekpoma town were downloaded and imported into ArcGIS software ArcMap 10.8, where the Supervised Maximum Likelihood Analysis was carried out on the datasets. Multiple linear regression was used to determine the rate of contribution of the various university campuses to the spatial expansion of each zone and linear regression analysis was used to determine the rate of contribution of the spatial densification of AAU campuses to the spatial expansion of Ekpoma town. The Land-use type of interest was the built-up areas. The town was delineated into three zones, each with a University campus. Zone A has the Main Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Campus, College of Medicine in Zone B, and Emuado campus in Zone C. The land use classification analysis was performed for the university campuses and Ekpoma town, for the years 1987, 2002, and 2023. The result shows that there is a strong positive linear relationship between the spatial densification of AAU campuses and the spatial expansion of Ekpoma town, with an R2 value of 0.986. This implies that for every 1km2 densification of the campuses, there is an increase of 32.030km2 in the spatial expansion of Ekpoma town. Thus, it was projected using the regression model that by the year 2043, the spatial extent of Ekpoma town would be 67.9462 km2. These findings are valuable for informing existing land use and urban planning practices. Understanding the complex dynamics of urban expansion would help create a sustainable and resilient growth of the town in the future, avoiding possible pitfalls in urban development initiatives in the town.

Executives who lead cities face considerable challenges. Cities are complex ecosystems comprising myriad interacting systems, including information systems, which are vital for their operation and prosperity. Recognizing the value that information systems can offer, significant investments have been made to acquire these systems and make cities smarter or more intelligent. However, many smart city projects have failed to deliver on their promises due to a lack of clarity regarding their overall goals. Smarter or more intelligent towards what end? This article provides a systems-inspired approach to urban planning based on the premise that a city is a self-organising, capital-creating ecosystem composed of a city's administration and the many organizations within its domain. As the city's keystone entity, the administration's role is to create capital that enhances the capital productivity of other ecosystem members and nourishes innovators to boost capital creativity. A capital improvement budgeting framework can specify the allocation of all forms of capital to promote symbiotic connections between the various entities within a city. A city stack is designed to guide a city's administration in cooperating with its self-organising ecosystem. A research agenda to foster capital creation by city leaders is also outlined.

This paper empirically investigates trash disposal practices among internal migrants in cities in Benin, a representative African country undergoing rapid urbanization. Compared to existing residents, Benin's new urban populations are less likely to dispose of trash sustainably, which is defined as trash disposal through formal collection services. Using Benin census data, this paper employs various linear and non-linear regression models to show that new urban residents experience “environmental assimilation” by progressively adopting the approach to trash disposal through formal collection services over time. In the long run, they may develop similar trash disposal practices compared to existing residents. Moreover, we use similar regression models to show that socioeconomic factors (e.g., education) are unlikely to account for their assimilation, and this assimilation pattern is mostly observed in larger cities, which have sufficient capacity for waste management. Small cities with rapidly growing populations show a significantly lower proportion of trash disposal through collection services among newly arrived migrants, as well as weak or no signs of their environmental assimilation over time.

The current vertical/volumetric turn affected various academic fields, including urban scholarship. This short note broadens the critical literature by applying this emerging perspective on urban toponymic systems in the context of urban governance. Synthesizing the critical toponymic approaches with the notions of volume and verticality of urban space, this paper advanced critical urban governance scholarship, introducing a concept of toponymic verticality. The short note reveals the spatial vertical stratification of the urban toponymic system, its place-making potential, and political-economic functionality. These initial findings can contribute to future research in practical aspects of the politics of “good” urban governance and potentially rethinking the traditional two-dimensional spatiality toward understanding the complexity of the spatial relations in urban landscapes through the verticality of urban place names.

This manuscript investigates the multifaceted concept of urban resilience amidst escalating urbanization and environmental challenges. The study identifies and examines key problems across environmental, infrastructural, economic, human, social, and institutional dimensions of urban resilience through a systematic review of literature and consultations with experts in the field. Emphasizing the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration and community involvement, the research underscores the necessity for innovative approaches to bolster urban resilience. By shedding light on the intricate dynamics of urban challenges, the study advocates for sustainable urban development strategies that prioritize resilience-building. Insights from the study pave the way for future research endeavors aimed at addressing urban complexities and fostering resilient urban environments that can withstand and adapt to external and internal disturbances effectively.

A partir de problemas relacionados ao ensino de projeto em sala de aula, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo avaliar o desempenho do uso de jogos enquanto ferramenta de ensino de desenho urbano no curso de arquitetura e urbanismo. Para atingir este objetivo, a pesquisa apresenta um relato de experiência que contempla a elaboração e o teste de um protótipo de jogo denominado “jogo do diagnóstico”, aplicado a uma turma da disciplina de Projeto Urbanístico, do oitavo período do curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo. Configura-se como uma pesquisa exploratória, propositiva e qualitativa. Adota-se como método o Design Science Research (DSR), buscando aplicação do conhecimento científico através da proposição de soluções para os problemas encontrados. O trabalho está dividido em três partes: 1) levantamento bibliográfico sobre ensino de desenho urbano, aprendizagem significativa e jogos; 2) relato de experiência sobre o projeto e a utilização de um protótipo de jogo em ateliê de projeto urbanístico; 3) síntese e avaliação dos resultados observados a partir do referencial teórico e empírico. A experiência relatada foi considerada válida pois obteve êxito no ensino de desenho urbano, revelou novas fragilidades da metodologia e possibilitou o entendimento das problemáticas observadas. Baseando-se nos conceitos de Ensino Reflexivo, Aprendizagem Significativa e Interação Lúdica Significativa, a conclusão da pesquisa apresenta um conjunto de diretrizes para elaboração de jogos para ensino de desenho urbano.

A atuação do arquiteto e urbanista nos últimos tempos concentrou-se principalmente no desenvolvimento dos espaços urbanos, deixando o contexto e as vivências rurais em segundo plano. Compreendendo o rural e suas práticas como um conjunto emergente, que se reinventa frente à contemporaneidade, enxergamos a dinâmica da agricultura familiar. Atualmente, a produção familiar assume múltiplas funções no cenário econômico-social e ainda está em constante movimento de resistência diante das transformações, sobretudo no setor agrícola. Uma das alternativas para a continuidade e fortalecimento da agricultura familiar é o cooperativismo. Nessa lógica, a CAMPAL - Cooperativa Adaptável Modular de Promoção ao Agricultor Local surge como uma resposta para as áreas rurais e agricultores familiares norte-rio-grandenses. A proposição da CAMPAL passa pelo entendimento dos pressupostos projetuais para propriedades do meio rural, a partir dos conceitos de espaço, arquitetura e paisagem rurais; pelo rebatimento funcional das dinâmicas contemporâneas da agricultura familiar e do cooperativismo agrícola na arquitetura; e, pela adoção da adaptabilidade e lógica modular no produto arquitetônico. Desse modo,o objetivo desse artigo é apresentar o sistema edilício de uma cooperativa rural voltada à promoção dos pequenos produtores agrícolas potiguares, que abastecem nossas cidades e são vitais para o funcionamento da nossa região Como resultado, obtém-se um edifício embasado nos princípios de ruralidade, adaptabilidade e modularidade, qualificado a responder aos distintos aspectos funcionais, físico-ambientais e legais dos contextos rurais do Rio Grande do Norte.

A Arquitetura é essencial na criação de espaços legíveis, acessíveis e inclusivos que promovam a autonomia e segurança de seus usuários. Silenciosamente, os espaços comunicam ao usuário o tipo de comportamento e de movimentação mais adequados ali. A percepção dos sinais do ambiente difere entre os diversos grupos que o utilizam – idade, com deficiência ou não, se é a primeira vez no local, alfabetizados ou não. Crianças podem precisar de mais tempo e preparação para entender tais sinais e os ambientes em que estão e dependem do adulto para orientá-las. A aprendizagem depende de vários fatores e as abordagens devem ser adequadas a cada grupo específico. Muitas dessas abordagens, principalmente em relação à segurança em emergências, dirigem-se especificamente ao público adulto “padrão”, que não tem qualquer dificuldade ou condição que prejudique sua movimentação por um determinado espaço. Crianças são um grupo particularmente frágil e vulnerável, com características específicas de comportamento e aprendizado que devem ser consideradas ao se pensar em sua segurança. Através da revisão de literatura referente ao processo de aprendizado e desenvolvimento de memórias e hábitos, este artigo tem como objetivo discutir a importância de tal processo em uma eventual situação de emergência que exija um procedimento de abandono da edificação. Aborda-se, aqui, a sinergia de conceitos de aprendizado e do conhecimento do ambiente construído, que podem facilitar seu uso em situações normais, mas principalmente em situações de emergência que exijam o abandono de uma edificação escolar, neste caso por funcionários, professores e alunos de uma pré-escola.

A construção em aço ainda é, em grande medida, um mito em algumas escolas de arquitetura. A formação brasileira, de modo geral, ainda é fortemente influenciada pelo modernismo, que tem no concreto armado a representação de material e sistema estrutural incontestáveis. Contudo, a contemporaneidade tenta romper as barreiras e difundir o uso de materiais alternativos. Uma das alternativas principais é o aço, que lança oportunidade de soluções mais diversas e ousadas, uma vez que possibilita uso de balanços, atirantamentos e vãos maiores. Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar um projeto concebido em aço para o concurso do Centro Brasileiro da Construção em Aço, o CBCA, focando na apresentação do processo de projeto e da proposta as soluções arquitetônicas e estruturais utilizadas. O manuscrito mostra, ainda, os bastidores do que precisou ser preparado nas etapas da competição, revelando os principais desafios colocados à equipe de projeto.

O artigo busca apresentar o curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da UFRN (CAU/UFRN) a partir da perspectiva da coordenação do curso. Utiliza-se de alguns documentos internos à coordenação que trazem resultados avaliativos de seu funcionamento, bem como de sua qualidade, e que dificilmente são acessados por membros externos à gestão. Faz uma breve apresentação do curso, dos seus conteúdos, das avaliações e resultados recentes recebidos e da relação discente-docente a partir desses documentos. Ao longo desses 50 anos, vários docentes passaram pela coordenação do curso, mas manteve-se a tradição de continuidade entre os trabalhos desenvolvidos, o que foi possível com o importante papel do colegiado do curso e do NDE. As transformações da sociedade que aconteceram ao longo desses 50 anos, acompanhadas sempre por mudanças nas Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais dos cursos de arquitetura e urbanismo, foram seguidas pelos diversos Projetos Pedagógicos de Curso do CAU/UFRN, construídos em diálogo entre coordenação, colegiado, NDE e discentes, com papel relevante. Além disso, o curso sempre investiu na internacionalização, bem como na relação entre pós-graduação e graduação. Tudo isso resultou num curso de excelência, notas máximas nos recentes processos avaliativos feitos pelo MEC (ENADE) e acreditado pelo Conselho de Arquitetura e Urbanismo do Brasil.

Alguns centros urbanos antigos sofrem um processo de desvalorização, provocando a degradação das edificações desses locais, gerando insegurança e marginalização dos espaços. Dessa forma, surge a necessidade de intervenção e a aplicação da técnica do retrofit mostra-se capaz de auxiliar nesse processo. O objetivo deste artigo consiste em avaliar os benefícios esperados com a reabilitação através do projeto de retrofit de duas edificações localizadas no centro histórico da cidade do Recife, que abrigavam silos de grãos desativados, transformando-os em edifícios multifuncionais. Foi realizada uma avaliação do impacto urbano do projeto no entorno através do uso de indicadores e um checklist para determinação do grau de intervenção do retrofit, levando em consideração a sustentabilidade da construção. A condição atual das edificações mostrou a necessidade de um processo de reabilitação, onde foram selecionados oito indicadores que atestaram que o projeto será capaz de impulsionar ações de revitalização e dinamismo do espaço urbano. Além disso, o projeto propôs a modernização das instalações e aplicação de novas tecnologias aliada à garantia da qualidade interna do ambiente, tornando-o energeticamente eficiente e preocupando-se com o bem-estar dos residentes, assegurando um caráter sustentável após e durante a execução do projeto.

Sendo compreendido de modo geral, como algo vago e subjetivo, ligado diretamente às emoções humanas, a dimensão afetiva é mais palpável do que aparenta. Ela tem recebido recentemente certa atenção em função de suas implicações e aplicabilidade em investigações qualitativas, mais especificamente no discurso arquitetônico, em função do impacto do ambiente construído sobre as pessoas. Nesse sentido, a análise dos projetistas e dos seus modos de apropriação do arcabouço fornecido justifica-se à medida que poderá auxiliar a identificar, no plano da práxis, os melhores procedimentos e abordagens, as estratégias, para salvaguarda não só de princípios de usabilidade ou conforto, como também os princípios valorais e afetivos do utilizador. Desse modo, o objetivo geral do trabalho foi avaliar a apropriação do arcabouço e ferramental específicos do conjunto teórico-metodológico original denominado ‘Projeto Sensível ao Valor centrado no Afeto’ (PSV_A), por parte dos projetistas, em ambiente acadêmico. O método foi constituído do repasse do arcabouço teórico-metodológico proposto às turmas de graduação e pós-graduação em Arquitetura e Urbanismo, e o acompanhamento dos modos e interação, variações e apropriações pelas quais os discentes o puseram em prática, tendo como estudo de caso o ambiente hospitalar, sob uma avaliação composta por análise comparativa, conceitual conforme aproximação ao referido arcabouço e, análise de conteúdo. O trabalho busca contribuir para o debate acerca da consideração dos valores, princípios e ética dos usuários e demais partes interessadas no planejamento de elementos societais influenciados pelo projeto arquitetônico de ambientes de saúde.

O uso e a apropriação dos espaços públicos para a prática da caminhada está relaciona à qualidade espacial desses locais, essa qualidade é definida por uma série de elementos morfológicos que podem influenciar tanto de forma positiva quanto negativa a experiência dos pedestres. A percepção que os usuários têm desses espaços está intrinsecamente ligada à sua experiência física e visual ao se deslocar por esses trajetos urbanos. Nesse contexto, o presente artigo apresenta dados sobre a percepção dos usuários de um espaço público dedicado à realização de atividades físicas. A avaliação da percepção é conduzida em três fases distintas, a análise dos aspectos físicos, examinando os elementos concretos e estruturais presentes nas áreas de caminhada. Seguida de uma análise de observação sistemática, realizada para identificar padrões de deslocamento, atividades e comportamentos dos usuários. E, aplicação de entrevista aos pedestres que utilizam a área, para identificar a percepção e satisfação em relação ao ambiente de caminhada. O local investigado corresponde a uma área pública de passagem e permanência amplamente utilizada pela população da cidade de Bauru-SP para a prática de atividades físicas e de lazer. Os resultados demonstram a eficácia do instrumento em identificar quais elementos afetam a percepção dos usuários, sejam eles positivos ou negativos. A aplicação deste instrumento oferece uma análise aprofundada e perceptiva dos ambientes de caminhada, fornecendo um diagnóstico do local, servindo de base para a formulação de projetos e diretrizes que visam a melhoria da qualidade espacial dessas áreas urbanas.

Os parques públicos aparecem no século XVIII como uma alternativa às transformações sociais e espaciais sofridas pela cidade pós-industrial. O crescimento urbano desordenado, o aumento da poluição e o adoecimento físico e mental proveniente do caos urbano faz destes espaços verdes verdadeiros oásis; locais com potencial de proporcionar inúmeros benefícios aos cidadãos. No caso do Parque Boca da Mata, em Ceará-Mirim/RN, este potencial não tem sido plenamente aproveitado. O local possui uma área de cerca de 69 hectares legalmente protegida, que abraça uma zona de resquício de Mata Atlântica, importante bioma brasileiro. Apesar de ser uma área, em tese, destinada à população para o exercício da ciência, da cultura e do lazer, o local carece de qualquer infraestrutura de suporte à sua utilização, além de zonas em processo de contínua degradação. Desta forma, o presente trabalho vem estudar a área e apontar soluções que insiram o local no cotidiano da população, com o objetivo de apresentar uma proposta de área visitável dentro do Parque Boca da Mata, respeitando seu entorno, contemplando as necessidades dos cidadãos e considerando ideais de recuperação ambiental e democratização de seus espaços. As soluções apontadas procuraram considerar os contextos urbano, socioeconômico e natural do Parque Boca da Mata, a fim de traçar os melhores caminhos de intervenção e propiciar desenvolvimento harmônico entre a cidade, sociedade e o meio-ambiente.

Este texto apresenta parte dos resultados da pesquisa intitulada “50 anos do CAU-UFRN: emergência e evolução da pesquisa na área de Projeto e seus rebatimentos no ensino”, que objetivou documentar e analisar o processo de introdução da investigação científica neste campo no âmbito do Departamento de Arquitetura e do Curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte e sua evolução ao longo dos anos. A investigação levantou, em um primeiro momento, os projetos de pesquisa coordenados por professores da área de Projeto, observando temas, objetos de estudos, abordagens teóricas e métodos empregados, assim como as contribuições para o ensino de graduação e de pós-graduação e para a produção de conhecimentos científicos nessa área. Em um segundo momento, foram levantados os projetos de concurso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo que obtiveram premiação ou menção honrosa, envolvendo estudantes e professores do curso. O período observado, dos anos 2000 até os dias atuais, coincide com o início da pós-graduação, a criação do Laboratório de Projetos Integrados (LAPIs) e do Grupo de Pesquisa Projetar, fatores fortemente associados. Quanto às pesquisas, os resultados evidenciam a diversidade temática, de abordagens e métodos empregados indicando a transversalidade da pesquisa neste campo e seu diálogo com outras áreas de conhecimentos, além de uma significativa produção científica dos pesquisadores envolvidos, o que também inclui estudantes de graduação e de pós-graduação. Quanto aos projetos de concurso, as premiações e menções honrosas recebidas são indicativos da qualidade do ensino, da pesquisa e da extensão realizados neste curso.

Este artigo discute como o conceito de cidade criativa vem sendo incorporado ao planejamento urbano de Bilbao, na Espanha, ao longo dos últimos vinte anos, enfocando sua trajetória histórica, intervenções no espaço urbano e os conflitos sociais emergentes desse processo. Entende-se que as cidades criativas são aquelas que consideram o uso da criatividade urbana como um elemento fundamental para alcançar o desenvolvimento sustentável e, por isso, nos planos de desenvolvimento local, irão buscar fortalecer os setores ligados à economia criativa, além de atuarem de forma cooperativa em rede internacional Unesco, 2004; 2021). Para isso, foram considerados os estudos publicados pela associação Bilbao Metropoli-30, pela sociedade Bilbao Ria 2000 e relacionados ao Projeto Zorrotzaurre, focando nos discursos relacionados ao incremento da economia criativa e/ou que evidenciam o uso da arte, cultura e criatividade para o desenvolvimento urbano, social e econômico. Como resultados encontrados, verifica-se que, o uso da cultura no Plan Estratégico para la Revitalización del Bilbao Metropolitano (1992), foi intensificado e ampliado no Projeto Zorrotzaurre (2012) alinhado-o à ideia de cidade criativa. Desse modo, aponta-se que Bilbao caminha para um novo momento de regeneração urbana, marcado, por um lado, pelo fortalecimento das indústrias criativas e pela apropriação de valores locais intangíveis pelo mercado; e, por outro, pela possibilidade de disputa e construção do conceito de cidade criativa com a contribuição dos movimentos urbanos independentes, quer seja pela adoção de novas formas de governança urbana, quer sela pela serendipidade e imprevisibilidade urbanas.

Projetos que utilizam abordagens de ciência cidadã têm se popularizado em diferentes partes do mundo. Embora as pesquisas em ciência cidadã geralmente estejam concentradas nos campos da biodiversidade e da conservação ambiental, existe uma oportunidade promissora no campo do planejamento urbano que merece ser explorada. Ao examinarmos as características essenciais da ciência cidadã, podemos estabelecer uma analogia com os modelos convencionais de participação popular na prática do planejamento urbano. Por outro lado, o modelo de participação definido pelo Estatuto da Cidade através dos planos diretores participativos conta com pouca credibilidade por parte da população, limitando o controle social das políticas urbanas e prejudicando o direito à cidade. Para elaborar uma análise sobre o "paradigma" da participação no âmbito do planejamento urbano, é fundamental compreender que o domínio do espaço urbano está intrinsecamente relacionado às relações de saber-poder, que impactam o campo político através de discursos ideológicos potentes. Acreditamos que a integração metodológica da ciência cidadã pode oferecer novas perspectivas e respostas menos subjetivas para os desafios urbanos contemporâneos. Para isso, apresentaremos, no contexto histórico da ciência cidadã, analisando os desafios culturais que emergem desse modelo científico, baseados em inovação científica, aprendizagem social e democracia local. Como essa abordagem pode-se criar projetos urbanos mais democráticos e eficazes para a tomada de decisões, melhorar a qualidade dos dados coletados e aumentar a legitimidade das políticas urbanas.

Os centros históricos representam o traçado inicial da cidade, abrigam edificações históricas, concentram equipamentos públicos comunitários e transporte coletivo. Torna-se relevante preservar seu traçado urbano e suas edificações históricas através da restauração e reabilitação para uma função social. A residência é função básica do Centro Histórico, registro das manifestações sociais e condição básica para a sobrevivência humana, sendo a qualidade do ambiente definida por meio da interação entre seus indivíduos e o espaço físico. A Prefeitura de São Paulo, diante do déficit de habitação na cidade (onde nota-se que 11% dos moradores em situação de rua são idosos), visando a atender a demanda de habitação desta população, criou os Centros de Acolhida – sendo um deles o Centro de Acolhida Especial para Idosos - Morada São João, localizado no Centro Histórico de São Paulo. Neste contexto, o objetivo do trabalho é analisar a percepção dos usuários quanto aos padrões domésticos e coletivos do edifício reabilitado Centro de Acolhida Especial para Idosos ‘Morada São João’ e aos padrões comunitários do contexto, o Distrito da República do Centro Histórico de São Paulo. A metodologia compreende três etapas: i) análise dos parâmetros físicos do contexto, Distrito da República do Centro Histórico de São Paulo; ii) análise da construção da reabilitação para o CAEI Morada São João; e iii) análise da percepção dos usuários quanto aos padrões domésticos e coletivos do edifício reabilitado e aos padrões comunitários do contexto.

Neste artigo, discute-se a respeito das Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação Móveis e sem Fio (TIMS) a favor do ensino de Altimetria na disciplina de Topografia para o primeiro ano de um determinado curso superior. O texto aborda o desenvolvimento da metodologia que foi utilizada nas aulas, que versam entre planejamento da base teórica e aplicação do conteúdo ministrado, destacando a relevância e pertinência do uso dos smartphones e do aplicativo LandscapAR® nessas aulas. A fim de verificar a relevância e importância dessas tecnologias, em especial daquele aplicativo, entre os anos de 2015 e 2019, foram aplicados 355 questionários com os estudantes do referido curso. Em suma, várias reflexões são feitas no decorrer do trabalho, de modo a salientar a importância da utilização da tecnologia de maneira adequada e contextualizada. Ao final, conclui-se que a utilização das TIMS e do LandscapAr®, alinhadas aos conteúdos e técnicas aplicadas durantes aulas e atividades pedagógicas no ensino superior são importantes para as atividades profissionais e a vida cotidiana dos estudantes.

O presente texto trata da história dos 50 anos do Curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo (CAU) da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (UFRN), destacando-se pela discussão da proposta do projeto pedagógico integrado, implantado no início da década de 1990. A essência da proposta do CAU da UFRN foi o sistema de integração de conteúdos que, ao invés de serem trabalhados isoladamente, dentro das ciências parcelares, a intenção foi a apreensão dialética do conhecimento. A estrutura curricular do curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da UFRN foi uma proposta revolucionária no âmbito dos cursos de arquitetura e urbanismo em todo o Brasil. Isto resultou na melhoria na qualidade dos trabalhos desenvolvidos pelos alunos e, obviamente, do profissional formado. Também, apresenta-se a evolução dos projetos pedagógicos subsequentes e os resultados das avaliações institucionais. Além disso, destaca-se o Programa de Pós-Graduação em Arquitetura e Urbanismo (PPGAU) com mestrado acadêmico e do doutorado, e o Programa de Pós-Graduação em Arquitetura, Projeto e Meio Ambiente (PPAPMA), na modalidade mestrado profissional. No momento que o CAU UFRN completa 50 anos de sua criação, fica demonstrado o esforço do Departamento de Arquitetura (DARQ), através do seu corpo docente, discente e administrativo, sempre primando pela qualidade na formação da graduação e pós-graduação em arquitetura e urbanismo e pela indissociabilidade do ensino, pesquisa e extensão.

Este artigo descreve a experiência de desenvolvimento de um anteprojeto arquitetônico escolar para o "III Concurso Estudantil de Acústica Conrado Silva - III CACS", realizado para o XXX Encontro da Sociedade Brasileira de Acústica (SOBRAC), que ocorreu na UFRN, na cidade de Natal/RN, em 2023, com ênfase na qualidade acústica em ambientes educacionais. O projeto "Escola Harmonia", premiado com o terceiro lugar na competição, integrou conhecimentos de acústica e arquitetura para propor soluções que isolam os sons indesejados, controlam a reverberação sonora e otimizam a inteligibilidade da fala em espaços de ensino-aprendizagem. O conceito de harmonia norteou a implementação de mecanismos acústicos através da forma arquitetônica e da escolha de materiais. As decisões projetuais focaram na proteção das áreas de aprendizagem contra o ruído urbano e o ruído gerado pelo próprio ambiente escolar, assegurando um espaço propício ao desenvolvimento infanto-juvenil. A seleção e combinação de materiais acústicos, conforme fornecedores pré-determinados pelo concurso, destacam-se no projeto, que detalha três ambientes educacionais: auditório, sala de aula e sala multiuso. Além das questões acústicas, o projeto incorporou princípios de conforto ambiental e acessibilidade.

O presente artigo aborda a concepção de um projeto arquitetônico desenvolvido para o 15º Concurso CBCA para Estudantes de Arquitetura, cujo foco foi o Objetivo do Desenvolvimento Sustentável da ONU nº 9 que visa promover a indústria, inovação e infraestrutura. O projeto abordou a ampliação do Terminal Pesqueiro Público de Natal-RN (TPP) e utilizou o aço como principal premissa, propondo o aprimoramento de um equipamento público subutilizado. A proposta visou ampliar a atuação do TPP tornando-o um centro de referência para inovação, educação e empreendedorismo, integrando espaços de convivência e contemplação da paisagem do Rio Potengi. O projeto inclui áreas destinadas a atividades educacionais, pesquisa, inovação, comércio e lazer, com a intenção de contribuir para o desenvolvimento sustentável da região e a valorização da infraestrutura existente. Todo o processo de projeto foi colaborativo, envolvendo etapas de imersão no local, visitas de campo e mapeamento das necessidades, resultando em um projeto que equilibra funcionalidade, estética e sustentabilidade ambiental.

O processo de urbanização desordenada degrada as áreas verdes urbanas e compromete a prestação dos serviços ecossistêmicos. O objetivo geral deste artigo foi verificar a percepção de visitantes de praças públicas de Patos/PB sobre as áreas verdes urbanas e os serviços ecossistêmicos. Inicialmente, foi realizado uma caracterização geográfica da área de estudo, que consistiu em praças públicas localizadas na área urbana da cidade de Patos/PB. As praças públicas foram selecionadas com base na sua importância para a cidade na realização de eventos culturais, densidade de cobertura vegetal, academias da saúde e/ou estruturas físicas que promovessem a valorização cultural e o bem-estar de população em geral. No total, foram selecionadas seis praças públicas para a realização da pesquisa de percepção ambiental, sendo elas: Alcides Carneiro, Pedro Guedes, Getúlio Vargas, Edivaldo Motta, José Francisco Filho e Francisco Guedes. Foram aplicados aos visitantes de todas as praças públicas estudadas um questionário de percepção sobre áreas verdes urbanas e suas contribuições na promoção dos serviços ecossistêmicos. Os dados reportaram que a população local cita como exemplo principal de serviço ecossistêmico a redução da temperatura do ar (n = 12), a socialização (n = 14) e a recreação nesses ambientes (n = 12). As praças públicas de Patos/PB, enquanto áreas verdes urbanas, podem prestar diferentes benefícios socioambientais para a cidade, sendo expressos por meio de serviços ecossistêmicos, o que respalda a importância da conservação e do uso sustentável desses espaços nas áreas urbanas para a promoção da qualidade de vida e bem-estar.

Projetar é a capacidade consciente de escolha de caminhos e soluções para um determinado contexto. Também é aprender com cada recomeço, no objetivo de encontrar melhores respostas para os problemas projetuais. Desta forma, o Concurso CBCA/Alacero desafia os estudantes de graduação a explorar e levar ao limite seu conhecimento, criatividade e capacidade de gerar ideias inovadoras na construção com aço. Este artigo busca compartilhar uma síntese dessa experiência acadêmica multicultural e “latino-americana” proporcionada pelo concurso CBCA de 2014, cujo tema foi “Edifício destinado a habitação social”, e que contou com a participação e premiação em segundo lugar de estudantes do curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da UFRN. Procura-se também destacar a importância da participação acadêmica em tais concursos, visando não só o aprendizado projetual e a produção dentro da universidade, mas também socialmente, ao proporcionar uma rica troca de experiência entre os alunos e professores envolvidos. São, portanto os concursos de projeto, uma maneira acessível e eficaz de elevar a prática projetual nas escolas de arquitetura e desenvolver, na formação profissional, um olhar crítico e mais atento aos desafios da sociedade. Dessa forma, este texto se estrutura a partir de uma breve (1) introdução, em seguida da (2) contextualização do que se tratou o concurso e (3) da experiência acadêmica e exposição do projeto vencedor. Abstract Engagement with institutions from migrants’ country of origin, both in the destination country and in the country of origin, is distinct transnational behaviour. This study investigates the impact of geographical distance on the institutional engagement of migrants from Czechia in five global regions. We examine how geographic (physical) proximity to Czechia shapes institutional engagement with the country of origin and identify factors beyond distance influencing institutional engagement. We analyzed survey data from Czech emigrants (N = 940) in neighbouring countries, Western and Northern Europe, Southern and Eastern Europe, overseas Anglo-Saxon countries, and other countries. We found that respondents from all more distant regions have higher levels of institutional engagement in the destination country than those from neighbouring countries. Length of stay and education were relevant factors for all selected regions, while place of residence (living in a metropolis) and the level of transnational behavior had varying impacts across regions. Concerning institutional engagement in origin country, the level of transnationalism was consistently the strongest predictor across. Transnational studies should incorporate geographic variables, such as physical distance into their conceptual frameworks. We expect our findings to be generalizable to other countries similar to Czechia, i.e. high-income countries whose citizens benefit from liberal visa regimes.

Abstract This article recounts the stories of Afghan migrants who have returned from Iran to Afghanistan. I frame these accounts of ordinary Afghans’ life experiences as “narratives of pride,” juxtaposing these stories with narratives of victimhood that dominate the immigration discourse on Afghanistan and more generally. In these narratives, migrants are predominantly characterized as victims in need of being saved. This article instead asks: why do returnees from Iran focus mostly on the positive parts of their mobility while downplaying the difficulties of dealing with the Iranian state, which does not have a good track record of dealing with migrants? In telling stories of years of living and working in Iran or other countries, I find that my interlocutors characterize themselves as sophisticated men of the world with a deep understanding of social and political phenomena that give them the ability to navigate life in foreign lands—an image far from victimhood as it is commonly portrayed in the literature and media. The article argues that in order to better understand the agency of migrants, it is crucial to form long-term connections with them to gain a more nuanced understanding of their experiences, rather than simply reproducing stories of victimhood.

Abstract Recognizing the importance of evidence-based research in informing migration policies and empowering migrant domestic workers (MDWs), this study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of MDW research patterns and trends. Using a descriptive cross-sectional study design, research articles on MDWs were retrieved from the Scopus database. The findings reveal a substantial increase in research output in recent years, with notable contributions from journals in the fields of social sciences and humanities. Key contributors include scholars from the United States, the United Kingdom, and institutions such as the National University of Singapore and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Journals in the field of migration have prominent role in publishing research on MDWs. At the author level, Yeoh, B.S.A, at the National University of Singapore was the most prolific author. Academic activities were the main driver of research and that funding was suboptimal in this field. Highly cited articles focused on topics such as transnational motherhood, the international division of reproductive labor, and the negotiation of citizenship rights. Major research hotspots in the retrieved articles included mental health aspects, caregiving especially of the elderly, and struggles for legal rights. Specific nationalities, such as Filipina/o and Indonesian MDWs, have been the focus of numerous studies, shedding light on their narratives, challenges, and agency within transnational contexts. Overall, this study underscores the urgency of addressing the needs and rights of MDWs, advocate for human rights, and enhance understanding of occupational health and safety in the unique context of domestic work.

Abstract This paper examines how forced migrants integrate individual perception, interpersonal exchange, and extended networks to navigate the naturalization process. By bringing together these three methods of knowledge creation and exchange, we aim to clarify how these strategies interact and overlap to manage uncertainties stemming from naturalization bureaucracy, a complex and often opaque process. Drawing on personal accounts of 30 Syrians in Berlin and analysis of approximately 100 social media posts, our findings illustrate that these methods could be employed concurrently or interchangeably and on the whole in a symbiotic manner, offering migrants multiple pathways to acquire and (in)validate crucial information. Although this synthesis of knowledge production methods is not necessarily conducive to accessing the right in question, in our case naturalization, it becomes necessary to arrive at “informed” decision-making in uncertain environments characterized by low level of trust and asymmetrical power relations. The paper therefore contributes to broader discussions on migrants’ navigation of legal systems and coping mechanisms in the face of bureaucratic hurdles.
