In this study, a 30-day incubation experiment was performed to investigate the interactive effects of soil moisture content and two types of organic manure (animal manure: M and wheat straw: WS) on organic C mineralization and the degradation of PAH compounds. Specifically, washed sandy soil sample free from PAHs was treated with combined standard solution containing six different PAHs; pyrene (Pyr), fluoranthene (Flt), benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), benzo[g,h,i]perylene (BghiP), benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkF), and indeno[123-cd]pyrene (IP). The soil samples treated with PAHs were amended with M or WS and then, the soil samples were incubated and subjected to two levels of moisture content (50% and 100% field capacity, FC). The results indicate that CO2–C rates were the highest at day 1, but they tended to be decreased sharply when incubation time increased. The results showed that the higher rate of CO2-C efflux rate and cumulative were observed in M and WS treatments at 100% FC. Applying organic amendments at 50% FC increased the total cumulative CO2-C from 21.6 mg kg−1 to 228 mg kg−1 for M and to 216 mg kg−1 for WS. Meanwhile, applying organic amendments at 50% FC increased the total cumulative CO2-C from 30 mg kg−1 to 381 mg kg−1 for M and to 492 mg kg−1 for WS. The highest increases at 100% FC could be explained by the optimum water content at field capacity. PAHs concentrations decreased significantly in the presence of organic amendments in relation to enhance CO2-C efflux (soil respiration) and to decrease soil pH. The objective of this study was to assess the pollution levels, sources, and human health risk of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soils of industrial areas of the central and eastern regions of Saudi Arabia. Therefore, the surface soil samples from industrial areas (cement kiln, oil refinery, electric power plant, steel industry, and desalination plant) were collected and analyzed by High-Resolution Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry-Time of Flight (HRGC-MS/MS-TOF) to quantify the levels of 26 PCBs (including 12 dioxin-like PCBs and 14 indicator-PCBs). The investigated 26 PCBs were detected in all soil samples. The total PCBs concentration (from tri-CBs to hepta-CBs) ranged from 171 to 4892 pg g−1 with an average of 1369 pg g−1 in soils of the central region and of 142-1231 pg g−1 with an average of 302 in soils of the eastern region, showing higher values at cement factory and/or oil refinery sites. Overall, the indicator-PCBs were the main congeners and contributed dominantly to the total mass of PCBs in comparison with the dioxin-like PCB congeners, with the most abundant for PCB-180 in the soil samples of the central region. Among individual dioxin-like PCBs, PCB-126 had the highest average value of the toxicity equivalence (TEQ). The TEQ values of ∑12dioxin-like PCBs did not exceed the Canadian soil quality guidelines of dioxin (4 pg TEQ g−1). Based on human health risk assessment via ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation, low adverse effects of PCBs could be expected as indicated by lower values of cancer risk (≤10−6). Bio-calcite (BC) derived from waste hen eggshell was subjected to thermal treatments (calcined bio-calcite (CBC)). The BC and CBC were further modified via magnesiothermal treatments to produce modified bio-calcite (MBC) and modified calcined bio-calcite (MCBC), respectively, and evaluated as a novel green sorbent for P removal from aqueous solutions in the batch experiments. Modified BC exhibited improved structural and chemical properties, such as porosity, surface area, thermal stability, mineralogy and functional groups, than pristine material. Langmuir and Freundlich models well described the P sorption onto both thermally and magnesiothermally sorbents, respectively, suggesting mono- and multi-layer sorption. Langmuir predicted highest P sorption capacities were in the order of: MCBC (43.33 mg g−1) > MBC (35.63 mg g−1) > CBC (34.38 mg g−1) > BC (30.68 mg g−1). The MBC and MCBC removed 100% P up to 50 mg P L−1, which reduced to 35.43 and 39.96%, respectively, when P concentration was increased up to 1000 mg L−1. Dynamics of P sorption was well explained by the pseudo-second-order rate equation, with the highest sorption rate of 4.32 mg g−1 min−1 for the MCBC. Hydroxylapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] and brushite CaH(PO4)·2H2O] were detected after P sorption onto the modified sorbents by X-ray diffraction analysis, suggesting chemisorption as the operating sorption mechanism. This review summarizes the influences of pyrolysis conditions and feedstock types on biochar properties and how biochar properties in turn affect soil properties. Mechanistic evidence of biochar's potential for enhancing crop productivity, carbon sequestration, and nutrient use efficiency are also discussed. The review identifies the knowledge gaps, limitations, and future research directions for large-scale use of biochar. Both pyrolytic parameters and feedstock types are considered to be the main factors controlling biochar properties such as nutrient content, recalcitrance, and pH. Biochar produced at low temperatures may improve nutrient availability and crop yield in acidic and alkaline soils, whereas high-temperature biochar may enhance long-term soil carbon sequestration. Biochar can also improve the efficiency of inorganic and organic fertilizers by enhancing microbial functions and reducing nutrient loss, thereby making nutrients more available to plants. Integration of biochar and chemical or organic fertilizers generally provides for better nutrient management and crop yield in most types of soils. Although biochar can improve degraded soils, it is not a panacea; as such, soil- and crop-specific biochar are needed in order to ensure optimum crop yield and agricultural sustainability. Polymer-clay composites were prepared by natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) or naturally local clay deposits in an N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide as cross-linked. The resultant composites were used for the removal of Cr(VI) from an aqueous solution. Additionally, their effects on soluble ions of tannery wastewater were investigated. The produced composites were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that Cr(VI) removal is dependent upon initial concentrations and pH. The adsorption quantity of Cr(VI) onto the polymerized clay deposit followed by polymerized zeolite exhibited higher values than their original samples. The polymer-clay composite of clay deposit showed the highest removal of 76.3-100% overall initial concentrations of 10-50 mg L-1 and at initial pH of 2. Kinetics of Cr(VI) removal by various sorbents was predicted using a pseudo-second order model. Our findings showed that the levels of salinity and various soluble ions (Cr2+, Na+, Cl- and SO42-) in tannery wastewater are very high, and their levels were reduced after treatment, especially by polymerized sorbents. It could be concluded that the polymer-clay composites may be employed as a highly efficient sorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) and toxic ions from the wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
