Abstract

Melatonin (MT) participates in plants' responses in plants’ response to cadmium (Cd) tolerance, although its work model remains elusive. Here, the function of MT in adjusting Cd accumulation in Gossypium hirsutum (CCRI12) was investigated. In this research we observed that exogenous 50 μM MT significantly reduced the Cd accumulation under 100 μМ Cd stress for 7 days of treatment in cotton seedlings. Cd markedly induced the ROS (H2O2, O2-) accumulation and elevated the expression of transporters for Cd uptake and translocation. After application of MT reduced ROS and MDA accumulation in response to high induction of antioxidant defense system; the genes encoding superoxide dismutase (GhSOD), catalase (GhCAT), and peroxidase (GhPOD), ascorbate peroxidase (GhAPX), and glutathione S-transferase (GhGST) were significantly upregulated accompanied by their level of content. Furthermore, MT down-regulated transporters for Cd uptake include Natural Resistance-Associated Macrophage Protein 1 (GhNRAMP3), Zinc/Iron-regulated transporter-like protein (GhZIP1/4/6), Heavy Metal ATPase gene (GhHMA2), and ATP-binding Cassette sub family C (GhABCC3/2). Exogenous application of MT raised the hemicelluloses, cellulose and pectin content accompanied by their expression levels, xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase (GhXTH28/6/9/B), cellulose synthase like (GhCSLG1/2) and COBRA-like (GhCOBL4), pectin acetylesterases (GhPAE8/7), pectin methylesterases (GhPME31) which in turn increased the cell wall's binding capacity to Cd.

Abstract

Automatic image aesthetics assessment is a computer vision problem dealing with categorizing images into different aesthetic levels. The categorization is usually done by analyzing an input image and computing some measure of the degree to which the image adheres to the fundamental principles of photography such as balance, rhythm, harmony, contrast, unity, look, feel, tone and texture. Due to its diverse applications in many areas, automatic image aesthetic assessment has gained significant research attention in recent years. This article presents a review of the contemporary automatic image aesthetics assessment techniques. Many traditional hand-crafted and deep learning-based approaches are reviewed, and critical problem aspects are discussed, including why some features or models perform better than others and the limitations. A comparison of the quantitative results of different methods is also provided.

45. Anomalous entities detection using a cascade of deep learning models

Abstract

Human actions that do not conform to usual behavior are considered as anomalous and such actors are called anomalous entities. Detection of anomalous entities using visual data is a challenging problem in computer vision. This paper presents a new approach to detect anomalous entities in complex situations of examination halls. The proposed method uses a cascade of deep convolutional neural network models. In the first stage, we apply a pretrained model of human pose estimation on frames of videos to extract key feature points of body. Patches extracted from each key point are utilized in the second stage to build a densely connected deep convolutional neural network model for detecting anomalous entities. For experiments we collect a video database of students undertaking examination in a hall. Our results show that the proposed method can detect anomalous entities and warrant unusual behavior with high accuracy.

49. Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles and Zinc Sulfate Alleviate Boron Toxicity in Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Abstract

Boron toxicity significantly hinders the growth and development of cotton plants, therefore affecting the yield and quality of this important cash crop worldwide. Limited studies have explored the efficacy of ZnSO4 (zinc sulfate) and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) in alleviating boron toxicity. Nanoparticles have emerged as a novel strategy to reduce abiotic stress directly. The precise mechanism underlying the alleviation of boron toxicity by ZnO NPs in cotton remains unclear. In this study, ZnO NPs demonstrated superior potential for alleviating boron toxicity compared to ZnSO4 in hydroponically cultivated cotton seedlings. Under boron stress, plants supplemented with ZnO NPs exhibited significant increases in total fresh weight (75.97%), root fresh weight (39.64%), and leaf fresh weight (69.91%). ZnO NPs positively affected photosynthetic parameters and SPAD values. ZnO NPs substantially reduced H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) by 27.87% and 32.26%, MDA (malondialdehyde) by 27.01% and 34.26%, and O2− (superoxide anion) by 41.64% and 48.70% after 24 and 72 h, respectively. The application of ZnO NPs increased the antioxidant activities of SOD (superoxide dismutase) by 82.09% and 76.52%, CAT (catalase) by 16.79% and 16.33%, and POD (peroxidase) by 23.77% and 21.66% after 24 and 72 h, respectively. ZnO NP and ZnSO4 application demonstrated remarkable efficiency in improving plant biomass, mineral nutrient content, and reducing boron levels in cotton seedlings under boron toxicity. A transcriptome analysis and corresponding verification revealed a significant up-regulation of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes, photosynthesis pathway, and ABC transporter genes with the application of ZnO NPs. These findings provide valuable insights for the mechanism of boron stress tolerance in cotton and provide a theoretical basis for applying ZnO NPs and ZnSO4 to reduce boron toxicity in cotton production.
