Günümüze kadar yapılan çalışmalarda, Menderes Masifi’nin temel serilerine ait paragnays – şist ardalanması Masif’in en yaşlı kayaçları olarak kabul edilmiştir. Masif’in Orta Asmasifi içerisinde yer alan Bozdağ (Ödemiş) bölgesinde yeni elde edilen jeolojik ve jeokronolojik bulgular Masif’te bilinenden daha yaşlı kayaçlardan yapılı bir kesimin olduğunu göstermektedir. Söz konusu bu yeni ünite, Birgi – Salihli arasında çok geniş bir alanda yayılım sunmaktadır. Bu bölgede geniş yayılım sunan şistler Bozdağ şistleri olarak bilinmektedir. Bozdağ şistleri tabanda seyrek mermerli kuvarsit – kuvars şist – mikaşist ardalanması ile başlar, kalın ve homojen şist birimine geçiş sunar. Bunlar uyumlu ve geçişli bir dokanakla siyah kuvarsit – şist – fillit ardalanmasından yapılı birime geçer. En üstte, bu birimi uyumlu olarak üzerleyen kalın karbonatlar yer alır. Bozdağ şisti yaygın amfibolit silleri ve granat-amfibol-plajiyoklaz şist düzeylerinin varlığı ile karakteristiktir. Bunların üzerine gelen şist-fillit ardalanması içerisinde amfibolit sillerinin varlığı devam etmektedir ve boyları birkaç kilometreyi bulan siyah kuvarsit ardalanması ise oldukça tipiktir. Anahtar minerallere ait izogradlar söz konusu istifin günümüzde devrik konumda olduğunu göstermektedir. Birim ayrıca, nadir olarak ilksel holokristalen dokusu korunmuş asidik damar kayaları da içermektedir. Homojen Bozdağ şistleri içerisindeki amfibolitlerden 611±24 my, siyah kuvarsit – şist – fillit ardalanması içerisindeki amfibolitlerden ise 627±12 my LA-ICP-MS zirkon U-Pb kristallenme yaşları elde edilmiştir. Asidik damar kayaları da benzer şekilde 632 ve630 my LA-ICP-MS zirkon U-Pb kristalizasyon yaşları vermiştir. Bu yaş verileri, söz konusu kesiksiz istifin ilksel çökelim yaşının ~630 my’dan daha yaşlı olduğunu göstermektedir. Tüm bu yaşlar göz önüne alındığında, Türkiye’deki şu ana kadar bilinen en yaşlı kayaçların Menderes Masifi’nde gözlendiği söylenebilir. Menderes Masifi’nde günümüzde halen detaylı çalışılmamış bölgeler bulunmaktadır. Bunlardan birisi de Masif’e ait metamorfikleri içeren, Denizli KB’sında yer alan Babadağ bölgesidir. Bu nedenle Babadağ bölgesi de yukarıda sözü edilen yaşlı kayaçların gözlenebileceği bir potansiyele sahiptir. İleride yapılacak detaylı çalışmalar bu bölgenin Jeolojik Miras açısından önemi ortaya koyacaktır. Bu çalışma 117Y346 numaralı TÜBİTAK Projesi kapsamında desteklenmiştir.

Convergence between the Eurasian and the African plates in the West Anatolian-Aegean region results in a trench retreat due to slab roll-back and tearing of the subducted African lithosphere. The upper plate response of this process gave way to back-arc extension in the region. We have conducted a very detailed anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) study on the Neogene rocks in SW Anatolia to unravel the style and magnitudes of deformation. For this purpose, from 83 sites in 11 structurally homogeneous domains, 1,680 paleomagnetic samples were analyzed. The results show that AMS fabrics are related to the tectonic deformation and that the magnetic lineation (maximum susceptibility axis, k1) is parallel to inferred maximum extension, while minimum susceptibility (k3) is typically normal to the bedding plane, corresponding to a preserved compaction associated with deposition fabric. The intermediate axis (k2) is parallel to a second extension direction and indicates that the region has been under the control of multi-directional extension during the Neogene. Two main magnetic lineation directions are identified and represent Oligocene to middle Miocene E-W, and late Miocene to Pliocene NW-SE oriented extension. The magnetic lineation directions are dominantly parallel or perpendicular to the general strikes of the normal faults. The results show that the deformation in the region resembles two differentially stretched rubber sheets under the influence of SW oriented extension, exerted by the southward retreating Eastern Mediterranean subduction system.

Two types of basins developed in the Western Anatolian extensional tectonic system during the Miocene-Quaternary interval, supra-detachment and rift basins, in the form of a rolling-hinge mechanism. In this study, stratigraphic and structural data on the presence of a rolling-hinge model in the area between Buharkent-Buldan on the northern edge of the Buyuk Menderes Graben are presented for the first time and the geological evolution of the graben is discussed. In the light of obtained field data, the Miocene-Quaternary sequences deposited on the northern edge of the Buyuk Menderes Graben were evaluated under 4 main sedimentary packages, which are separated from each other by angular and/or infrabasinal unconformities. These are the Lower-Middle Miocene (1st Package) and the Middle-Upper Miocene (2nd Package) which were deposited in the supra-detachment basin, and the PlioQuaternary 3rd and 4th packages formed in the rift basin. The structural elements that provide the basin formation and deformation of the region are the Miocene Buyuk Menderes Detachment Fault, the Pio-Quaternary Gokdere Fault, and the Holocene Buharkent Fault Segment that cuts the youngest graben basin-fill located in the most eastern part of the Buyuk Menderes Fault System.

The Gölmarmara Basin forms the northern branch of the Gediz Graben, which constitutes a series of horst-graben systems controlled by antithetic and synthetic normal fault steps in the Western Anatolia Extensional Province. Although geology of this section is well known, it is not studied enough in terms of active tectonics and geomorphology. The aim of this study is to reveal fault segments on the basis of Quaternary activity and structural evolution of the Gölmarmara Fault forming the southern boundary of the basin.The NW-SE trending Gölmarmara Fault, which consists of the 7 km-long İsmetpaşa and 11 km-long Hacıbaştanlar segments, has 26 drainage basins and 23 triangular facets in its footwall. Morphometric analyses (Smf, Vf, AF, HI, Shp, SL, Slip Rate) based on the digital elevation model were performed for these structures. According to combined results of our morphometry and field studies, the İsmetpaşa Segment has higher uplift and activity than the Hacıbaştanlar Segment, and they are linked by a relay ramp developing during the evolution of a complete fault zone. It can be said that the Gölmarmara Fault, which was found to have passed through 3 phases from its formation to the present day, is an en-echelon fault similar to when it formed. Morphometric indices and field data indicate that the Gölmarmara Fault is composed of medium-highly-active dip-slip normal fault segments and may cause earthquakes with a magnitude of Mw: 6.4. The Gölmarmara Fault, consisting of 2 geometric and 1 seismic segment, has uplift rate ranging from 0.179 to 0.518 mm/year (increasing at the center, and decreasing at the tips of the fault). These values are similar to uplift rates calculated for other active normal faults in the Gediz Graben., Gölmarmara Havzası, antitetik/sintetik normal fay basamakları ile denetlenen ve bir seri horst-graben sistemi olarak tanımlanan Batı Anadolu Genişleme Bölgesi’ndeki Gediz Grabeni’nin en kuzeydeki bölümünü oluşturur. Bu bölümün jeolojisi iyi bilinmesine rağmen, aktif tektonik ve jeomorfoloji çalışmaları açısından yeteri kadar incelenmemiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, havzanın güney sınırını oluşturan Gölmarmara Fayı’nın segment bazında tanımlanarak Kuvaterner dönem aktivitesini ve yapısal evrimini ortaya koymaktır.7 km uzunluğundaki İsmetpaşa ve 11 km uzunluğundaki Hacıbaştanlar segmentlerinden oluşan KB-GD uzanımlı Gölmarmara Fayı, taban bloğunda 26 drenaj havzasına ve 23 üçgen yüzey morfolojisine sahiptir. Bu yapılar üzerinde, sayısal yükseklik modeli temelli morfotektonik analizler (Smf, Vf, AF, HI, Shp, SL, Yükselim Oranı) yapılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar arazi verileri ile birlikte değerlendirilerek İsmetpaşa Segmenti’nin Hacıbaştanlar Segmenti’ne göre daha hızlı yükselime ve aktiviteye sahip olduğu ve bu iki segmentin, fay zonunun gelişimi sırasında bir aktarım rampasıyla birbirine bağlandığı tespit edilmiştir. Oluşumundan günümüze kadar 3 yapısal evreden geçen Gölmarmara Fayı’nın ilk evresinde kademeli (en-echelon) nitelikli faylardan oluştuğu söylenebilir. Morfometrik indisler ve saha verileri, Gölmarmara Fayı’nın orta-yüksek derecede aktif, eğim atımlı normal fay segmentlerinden meydana geldiğini ve Mw:6,4 büyüklüğünde depremler oluşturabileceğini göstermektedir. Geometrik olarak 2, sismik açıdan ise 1 segmentten oluşan Gölmarmara Fayı için, 0,179 ila 0,518 mm/yıl arasında değişen (fayın merkezinde artan, uç kısımlarında azalan) yükselim oranı hesaplanmıştır. Bu değerler Gediz Grabeni bölgesinde bulunan diğer aktif faylardaki yükselim hızı miktarları ile benzerlik göstermektedir.

Batı Anadolu genişlemeli tektonik sistemi içinde Miyosen-Kuvaterner zaman aralığında iki tip havza gelişimi gözlenmektedir. Bunlar rolling-hinge (yuvarlanan reze) modelinde gelişen supra-detachment (sıyrılma üstü) ve rift havzaları olarak tanımlanmışlardır. Bu çalışmada Büyük Menderes Grabeni kuzey kenarı üzerindeki Buharkent-Buldan arasındaki bölgede yuvarlanan reze modelinin varlığına dair stratigrafik ve yapısal veriler ilk kez sunulacak ve bu verilere göre grabenin jeolojik evrimi tartışılacaktır. Elde edilen arazi verileri ışığında, havza istifi birbirlerinden açısal ve/veya havza içi uyumsuzluklarla ayrılan 4 ana sedimanter paket altında değerlendirilmiştir. Bunlar; sıyrılma üstü (supra-detachment) havza istifini içeren alt-orta Miyosen yaşlı 1. Paket ve orta – üst Miyosen yaşlı 2. Paket ile rift havza istifini içeren Pliyo-Kuvaterner yaşlı 3. ve 4. Paketlerdir. Bölgedeki havza gelişimini ve deformasyonunu sağlayan yapısal elemanlar ise, Miyosen yaşlı Büyük Menderes Sıyrılma (Detachment) Fayı, Pliyo-Kuvaterner yaşlı Gökdere Fayı ve en genç graben dolgusunu kesen Holosen yaşlı Büyük Menderes Fay Sistemi’nin en doğu bölümünü oluşturan Buharkent Fay Segmenti’dir.Miyosen dönemini simgeleyen sıyrılma üstü havzaların ana sınırları Menderes Masifi’nde Eosen – Oligosen’deki etkin sıkışma tektoniğinin ürünü olan süreksizliklere karşılık gelen gnayslar ile şistlerin yapısal dokanağı ile temsil edilir. Pliyosen sonuna kadar süren düşük açılı sıyrılma fayların etkinliği nedeniyle Menderes Masifi’nde yüksek oranda genişleme gerçekleşmiş ve bu durum, kabuk kalınlığını azaltmıştır.Kuvaterner’de kabuğun incelip soğuması sonucunda sıyrılma üstü havza sisteminin yerini rift havza sistemi alarak Menderes Masifi rift havzalarının yüksek-açılı sınır fayları boyunca bloklara bölünmüştür. Arazi gözlemleri ve kinematik analiz sonuçları, Büyük Menderes Grabeni kuzey kenarındaki yapısal elemanların düşük açılıdan yüksek açılıya doğru ilerleyerek değiştiğini, havzanın ilerleme yönüne paralel olarak güneye doğru yuvarlanan reze modeli (rolling-hinge) şeklinde gençleştiğini, havza oluşumunun da sıyrılma üstü havzadan rift havzasına doğru evrildiğini göstermektedir., Two types of basins developed in the Western Anatolian extensional tectonic system during the Miocene-Quaternary interval, supra-detachment and rift basins, in the form of a rolling-hinge mechanism. The structural elements that provide the basin formation and deformation of the region are the Miocene Büyük Menderes Detachment Fault, the Pio-Quaternary Gökdere Fault, and the Holocene Buharkent Fault Segment that cuts the youngest graben basin-fill located in the most eastern part of the Büyük Menderes Fault System.The main fault contacts of the supra-detachment basins characterizing the Miocene period are represented by a structural boundary of gneisses and schists belonging to the Menderes Massif, which is a relict of the effective compressional tectonic products of the Eocene–Oligocene interval.Due to the effectiveness of low-angle faults in the Menderes Massif until the end of Pliocene, a high rate of extension occurred; because of this, the crust thickness was reduced. As a result of cooling of the crust during Quaternary, the supra-detachment basin system was replaced by a rift system and the Menderes Massif was divided into blocks along the high-angle boundary faults of the rift basin. Field observations and kinematic analysis reveal that tectonic structures on the northern margin of the Büyük Menderes Graben evolved from low-angle to high-angle normal faulting, and were rejuvenated southward parallel to the basin propagation in a rolling-hinge model. Thus, the basin formation also evolved from being supra-detachment to the rift type.
