La presente investigación se enfoca en la subcuenca del Río Chiquito, una región donde aproximadamente el 27 % de su territorio se encuentra completamente urbanizado. El sistema hidrogeológico exhibe características distintivas, comprendiendo acuíferos fracturados, porosos y multicapa que operan como una única unidad. La zona de recarga, en parte protegida por su ubicación en la zona de amortiguamiento y núcleo del Parque Nacional La Tigra, se encuentra en los acuíferos fracturados del Grupo Padre Miguel, seguidos por los acuíferos multicapa de la Formación Río Chiquito. En la parte baja de la subcuenca se localiza la zona de descarga, con alto aprovechamiento de pozos por la mayor densidad de población, y donde el territorio se encuentra completamente urbanizado. El análisis hidroquímico de las aguas subterráneas (manantiales y pozos) muestra que en la parte alta de la cuenca las aguas presentan una facies bicarbonatada cálcica, mientras que en la parte baja son aguas selenitosas, es decir, con elevadas concentraciones de sulfato. Los recursos hídricos de esta unidad se encuentran en un estado crítico debido a la extracción exhaustiva de agua en los pozos, agravando la situación los materiales propios de la geología local y los procesos edáficos, que contribuyen al empeoramiento de la calidad del agua, con incremento en la presencia de metales pesados, como arsénico, cadmio, manganeso, zinc y estroncio, así como por las altas concentraciones de sulfatos, comprometiendo la salud humana de los usuarios de estos puntos de aprovechamiento. Se determinó la zonificación de los riesgos asociados a la salud humana, identificando la parte baja de la subcuenca como un área con alto riesgo debido a aguas selenitosas y a contaminantes metálicos, junto con elevadas tasas de contaminación microbiológica encontradas en más del 50 % de los pozos evaluados, dando como consecuencia un índice de calidad del agua que oscila entre pobre y marginal. Although the systematic acquisition of SAR data from satellites started in the 1990s, InSAR is a technique still in development. The continuous improvement of the successive SAR satellite constellations in terms of reliability, revisit time, spatial resolution and data accessibility, and the processing techniques of SAR data in the estimation of surface displacements is improving the performance of InSAR. Thus, this doctoral thesis aims to explore the new opportunities that InSAR offers today. In particular, the objectives are, first, to explore novel contributions of InSAR in geological engineering, more specifically, in land monitoring and the hydrogeological characterisation of the ground; and, second, to do so while covering both qualitative and quantitative applications at both regional and local scales. These goals are addressed through four questions. The first question aims to investigate whether InSAR’s spatial resolution and precision are high enough today to monitor ground deformation at such a local scale and in such a changing environment as a construction site. Applied to the ground deformation induced by the dewatering of civil engineering works, InSAR provides a much more complete view and understanding of the observed phenomena than more common alternative techniques such as levelling. However, levelling usually provides more precise measurements. Thus, a combination of both techniques will improve and make the monitoring of civil engineering works more reliable. The second question is whether, because of its spatial data density and its precision, InSAR is suitable for the numerical modelling of extensive ground deformation phenomena. Tot i que l'adquisició sistemàtica de dades SAR des de satèl·lit va començar a la dècada del 1990, l’InSAR és una tècnica encara en desenvolupament. Les constel·lacions de satèl·lits SAR successives van millorant en termes de fiabilitat, temps de revisita, resolució espacial i accessibilitat de les dades, com també ho fan les tècniques de processament de les dades SAR en l'estimació del desplaçament de la superfície. Com a resultat, les prestacions de l'InSAR van millorant, de manera que l’objectiu d’aquesta tesi és explorar les noves oportunitats que l'InSAR ofereix avui en dia. Concretament, els objectius són (i) explorar noves aportacions de l'InSAR en l’enginyeria geològica, més específicament en el monitoratge i la caracterització hidrogeològica del terreny, i (ii) fer-ho tot cobrint aplicacions tant qualitatives com quantitatives a escales tant regionals com locals. Tanmateix, l’anivellació proporciona mesures generalment més precises. Així, la combinació d'ambdues tècniques pot millorar i augmentar la fiabilitat del monitoratge d’obres d'enginyeria civil. Nanofiltration (NF) is a promising technology called to play a relevant role in water reclamation, which lies in the core of circular economy in the water sector. The aim of this study was to assess two aromatic polyamide-based NF membranes (the looser NF270 and the tighter NF90 ones) for the treatment of urban impacted phreatic water. The focus was centred on the removal of dissolved inorganic and organic solutes and on the differences observed between solutes. Membrane ions rejection was modelled by the Solution-Electro-Diffusion Film Model (SEDFM). DOC was tracked by Fluorescence Excitation-Emission Matrices (FEEM) coupled to Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC) to get insight into the character of DOC rejected by or permeated through the membranes. Results showed that the NF90 membrane systematically achieved upper values in the rejection of ions than the looser NF270 one. Variations between ions could be interpreted by the mechanisms ruling their rejection, i.e. Donnan and dielectric exclusion phenomena. Experimental rejections were also satisfactorily fit by the SEDFM, indicating that that the presence of DOC in the phreatic water did affect modelling of ions transport through the membranes. DOC was rejected at very high percentages (>90%) by both membranes, but FEEM-PARAFAC analysis revealed that humic- and tryptophan- like components were more rejected (>90% for both membranes) than tyrosine-like compounds (45% for NF270 and 57% for NF90). The finding is of relevance from a point of view of disinfection practices, as it has been observed that humic-like substances are strongly correlated with DBPs formation.

Water balance modeling is an essential aspect of water management projects. This study presents WaterpyBal, a tool that generates spatial–temporal water balance models, focused on diffused precipitation and recharge modeling. WaterpyBal has flexible input data and modeling time intervals and integrates different stages of the water balance assessment, such as data interpolation and evapotranspiration and infiltration calculations, while taking into account soil characteristics and urban water cycle. WaterpyBal calculates water budget parameters such as recharge, deficit, and runoff and can be used to create maps, datasheets, and raster archives. WaterpyBal has a modular design that ensures its further development. This Python library is accompanied by the WaterpyBal Studio, a graphic user interface that facilitates the usage of WaterpyBal in water management projects. The functionality of WaterpyBal is demonstrated using a synthetic example. In essence, WaterpyBal supports sustainable groundwater management projects and ensures reproducible research results in these environmental fields.

This study reports precipitation samples covering a 3-year period (January 2020 to April 2023) with extensive monitoring of meteorological parameters in the local atmosphere, satellite imagery and HYSPLIT backward trajectory models humid air masses causing the sampled reception in the Los Pozuelos basin in NW Argentina.

To reduce uncertainty in the identification of the recharge areas in the Peripheral Aquifer of the Salar de Atacama (SdA), a few studies have investigated the isotopic characteristics and moisture sources of precipitation in the SdA basin. In the present study, the seasonal cycle of meteorological parameters and the relationships of this cycle with sea surface temperature anomalies are shown, the sources of humidity are identified, and the types of clouds producing precipitation are defined. Finally, the isotopic compositions of precipitation, surface water and groundwater in the SdA basin and the Altiplano-Puna Plateau basins are analysed to identify the area recharging the northern, eastern and southern subbasins of the SdA. In summer, when the highest temperature, relative humidity and precipitation values of the year are recorded, the precipitation is due to deep convection. The trajectories of the arriving air masses can be classified into three groups: from the North Atlantic Ocean across the Amazon basin, from the South Atlantic Ocean across the La Plata River basin and the Gran Chaco, and from the Pacific Ocean. In winter, when the temperature, relative humidity and precipitation are lower, the moisture masses come from the Pacific Ocean. Winter precipitation is more depleted in heavy isotopes than summer precipitation. The isotopic analysis of precipitation, surface water and groundwater shows that recharge of the eastern subbasins of the SdA occurs by diffuse infiltration of precipitation and concentrated infiltration of surface water, both within the hydrographic basin of the SdA. The meteoric source of the waters in the Altiplano-Puna Plateau basins is isotopically lighter than the waters found in the side basins of the SdA, so there is no significant water quantity transfer to the peripheral aquifers of the SdA from outside the hydrographic basin.
