Search

We present a summary of the last activities of science communication that have taken place in the Observatorio de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM Observatory) on the occasion of the Third Science Week of the Comunidad Autonoma de Madrid (3–16 November 2003), including guided tours through the observatory facilities, solar observations, and several talks. Moreover the current telescopes, instruments and tools of the UCM Observatory have allowed us to organize other communicating activities such as the live observation, together with its internet broadcast, of total lunar eclipses and other exceptional astronomical events as the Venus transit that took place in 8 June 2004.

We present a study of galaxies showing mid-infrared variability in data taken in the deepest Spitzer/MIPS 24 μm surveys in the Great Observatory Origins Deep Survey South field. We divide the data set in epochs and subepochs to study the long-term (months–years) and the short-term (days) variability. We use a χ2-statistics method to select active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates with a probability ≤1 per cent that the observed variability is due to statistical errors alone. We find 39 (1.7 per cent of the parent sample) sources that show long-term variability and 55 (2.2 per cent of the parent sample) showing short-term variability. That is, 0.03 sources × arcmin−2 for both, long-term and short-term variable sources. After removing the expected number of false positives inherent to the method, the estimated percentages are 1.0 and 1.4 per cent of the parent sample for the long term and short term, respectively. We compare our candidates with AGN selected in the X-ray and radio bands, and AGN candidates selected by their IR emission. Approximately, 50 per cent of the MIPS (Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer) 24 μm variable sources would be identified as AGN with these other methods. Therefore, MIPS 24 μm variability is a new method to identify AGN candidates, possibly dust obscured and low-luminosity AGN, that might be missed by other methods. However, the contribution of the MIPS 24 μm variable identified AGN to the general AGN population is small (≤13 per cent) in GOODS-South., JG-G, AA-H, and AH-C acknowledge support from the Augusto G. et al., In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at intermediate redshifts (z ∼ 1). We combine the ultra-deep optical spectro-photometric data from the Survey for High-z Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS) with deep UV-to-FIR observations in the GOODS-N field. Exploiting two of the 25 SHARDS medium-band filters, F687W17 and F823W17, we select [O ii] emission line galaxies at z ∼ 0.84 and z ∼ 1.23 and characterize their physical properties. Their rest-frame equivalent widths (EW([O ii])), line fluxes, luminosities, star formation rates (SFRs), and dust attenuation properties are investigated. The evolution of EW([O ii]) closely follows the SFR density evolution of the universe, with a trend of EW([O ii]) (1 + z) up to redshift z ≃ 1, followed by a possible flattening. The SF properties of the galaxies selected on the basis of their [O ii] emission are compared with complementary samples of SFGs selected by their MIR and FIR emission, and also with a general mass-selected sample of galaxies at the same redshifts. We demonstrate observationally that the UVJ diagram (or, similarly, a cut in the specific SFR) is only partially able to distinguish the quiescent galaxies from the SFGs. The SFR-M relation is investigated for the different samples, yielding a logarithmic slope ∼1, in good agreement with previous results. The dust attenuations derived from different SFR indicators (UV(1600), UV(2800), [O ii], IR) are compared and show clear trends with respect to both the stellar mass and total SFR, with more massive and highly star-forming galaxies being affected by stronger dust attenuation., The work of A.C. is supported by the STARFORM Sinergia Project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, and also benefited from a MERAC Funding and Travel Award. The epoch when low-mass star forming galaxies (LMSFGs) form the bulk of their stellar mass is uncertain. While some models predict an early formation, others favor a delayed scenario until later ages of the universe. We present constraints on the star formation histories (SFHs) of a sample of LMSFGs obtained through the analysis of their spectral energy distributions using a novel approach that (1) consistently combines photometric (broadband) and spectroscopic (equivalent widths of emission lines) data, and (2) uses physically motivated SFHs with non-uniform variations of the star formation rate (SFR) as a function of time. The sample includes 31 spectroscopically confirmed LMSFGs (7.3 < log M*/Msun < 8.0) at 0.3 < z_spec < 0.9 in the Extended-Chandra Deep Field-South field (E-CDF-S). Among them, 24 were selected with photometric stellar mass log M*/Msun < 8.0, 0.3 < z_phot < 1.0, and NB816 < 26 AB mag; the remaining 7 were selected as blue compact dwarfs (BCDs) within the same photometric redshift and magnitude ranges. We also study a secondary sample of 43 more massive spectroscopically confirmed galaxies (8.0 < log M*/Msun < 9.1), selected with the same criteria. The SFRs and stellar masses derived for both samples place our targets on the standard main sequence of star forming galaxies. The median SFH of LMSFGs at intermediate redshifts appears to form 90% of the median stellar mass inferred for the sample in the 0.5-1.8 Gyr immediately preceding the observation. These results suggest a recent stellar mass assembly for LMSFGs, consistent with the cosmological downsizing trends. MEGARA (Multi-Espectrógrafo en GTC de Alta Resolución para Astronomía) is an optical Integral-Field Unit (IFU) and Multi-Object Spectrograph (MOS) designed for the GTC 10.4m telescope in La Palma. MEGARA offers two IFU fiber bundles, one covering 12.5x11.3 arcsec^2 with a spaxel size of 0.62 arcsec (Large Compact Bundle; LCB) and another one covering 8.5x6.7 arcsec^2 with a spaxel size of 0.42 arcsec (Small Compact Bundle; SCB). The MEGARA MOS mode will allow observing up to 100 objects in a region of 3.5x3.5 arcmin^2 around the two IFU bundles. Both the LCB IFU and MOS capabilities of MEGARA will provide intermediate-to-high spectral resolutions (R_FWHM∽6,000, 12,000 and 18,700, respectively for the low-, mid-and high-resolution Volume Phase Holographic gratings) in the range 3650-9700 ÅÅ. These values become R_FWHM∽7,000, 13,500, and 21,500 when the SCB is used. A mechanism placed at the pseudo-slit position allows exchanging the three observing modes and also acts as focusing mechanism. The spectrograph is a collimator-camera system that has a total of 11 VPHs simultaneously available (out of the 18 VPHs designed and being built) that are placed in the pupil by means of a wheel and an insertion mechanism. The custom-made cryostat hosts an E2V231-84 4kx4k CCD. The UCM (Spain) leads the MEGARA Consortium that also includes INAOE (Mexico), IAA-CSIC (Spain), and UPM (Spain). MEGARA is being developed under a contract between GRANTECAN and UCM. The detailed design, construction and AIV phases are now funded and the instrument should be delivered to GTC before the end of 2016.

The accretion of minor satellites is currently proposed as the most likely mechanism to explain the significant size evolution of the massive galaxies during the last ~10 Gyr. In this paper we investigate the rest-frame colors and the average stellar ages of satellites found around massive galaxies (Mstar 10^11Msun) since z~2. We find that the satellites have bluer colors than their central galaxies. When exploring the stellar ages of the galaxies, we find that the satellites have similar ages to the massive galaxies that host them at high redshifts, while at lower redshifts they are, on average, ~1.5 Gyr younger. If our satellite galaxies create the envelope of nearby massive galaxies, our results would be compatible with the idea that the outskirts of those galaxies are slightly younger, metal-poorer and with lower [alpha/Fe] abundance ratios than their inner regions., 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Pérez-González et al., We present the Survey for High-z Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS), an ESO/GTC Large Program carried out using the OSIRIS instrument on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). SHARDS is an ultra-deep optical spectro-photometric survey of the GOODS-N field covering 130 arcmin2 at wavelengths between 500 and 950 nm with 24 contiguous medium-band filters (providing a spectral resolution R ∿ 50). The data reach an AB magnitude of 26.5 (at least at a 3σ level) with sub-arcsec seeing in all bands. SHARDS' main goal is to obtain accurate physical properties of intermediate- and high-z galaxies using well-sampled optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with sufficient spectral resolution to measure absorption and emission features, whose analysis will provide reliable stellar population and active galactic nucleus (AGN) parameters. Among the different populations of high-z galaxies, SHARDS' principal targets are massive quiescent galaxies at z > 1, whose existence is one of the major challenges facing current hierarchical models of galaxy formation. In this paper, we outline the observational strategy and include a detailed discussion of the special reduction and calibration procedures which should be applied to the GTC/OSIRIS data. An assessment of the SHARDS data quality is also performed. We present science demonstration results on the detection and study of emission-line galaxies (star-forming objects and AGNs) at z = 0-5. We also analyze the SEDs for a sample of 27 quiescent massive galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the range 1.0 < z ≲ 1.4. We discuss the improvements introduced by the SHARDS data set in the analysis of their star formation history and stellar properties. We discuss the systematics arising from the use of different stellar population libraries, typical in this kind of study. Averaging the results from the different libraries, we find that the UV-to-MIR SEDs of the massive quiescent galaxies at z = 1.0-1.4 are well described by an exponentially decaying star formation history with scale Ï„ = 100-200 Myr, age around 1.5-2.0 Gyr, solar or slightly sub-solar metallicity, and moderate extinction, A(V) ∿ 0.5 mag. We also find that galaxies with masses above M* are typically older than lighter galaxies, as expected in a downsizing scenario of galaxy formation. This trend is, however, model dependent, i.e., it is significantly more evident in the results obtained with some stellar population synthesis libraries, and almost absent in others. © 2013. Context. Studies measuring the star formation rate density, luminosity function, and properties of star-forming galaxies are numerous. However, it exists a gap at 0.5 z α -based studies. Aims. Our main goal is to study the properties of a sample of faint H α emitters at z ~ 0.62. We focus on their contribution to the faint end of the luminosity function and derived star formation rate density, characterising their morphologies and basic photometric and spectroscopic properties. Methods. We use a narrow-band technique in the near-infrared, with a filter centred at 1.06 μ m. The data come from ultra-deep VLT/HAWK-I observations in the GOODS-S field with a total of 31.9 h in the narrow-band filter. In addition to our survey, we mainly make use of ancillary data coming from the CANDELS and Rainbow Cosmological Surveys Database, from the 3D-HST for comparison, and also spectra from the literature. We perform a visual classification of the sample and study their morphologies from structural parameters available in CANDELS. In order to obtain the luminosity function, we apply a traditional V / V max method and perform individual extinction corrections for each object to accurately trace the shape of the function. Results. Our 28 H α -selected sample of faint star-forming galaxies reveals a robust faint-end slope of the luminosity function α = - 1.46 -0.08 +0.16 . The derived star formation rate density at z ~ 0.62 is ρ SFR = 0.036 -0.008 +0.012 M ⊙ yr -1 Mpc -3 . The sample is mainly composed of disks, but an important contribution of compact galaxies with Sersic indexes n ~ 2 display the highest specific star formation rates. Conclusions. The luminosity function at z ~ 0.62 from our ultra-deep data points towards a steeper α when an individual extinction correction for each object is applied. Compact galaxies are low-mass, low-luminosity, and starburst-dominated objects with a light profile in an intermediate stage from early to late types.

In these proceedings we give a summary of the characteristics and current status of the MEGARA instrument, the future optical IFU and MOS for the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). MEGARA is being built by a Consortium of public research institutions led by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM, Spain) that also includes INAOE (Mexico), IAA-CSIC (Spain) and UPM (Spain). The MEGARA IFU includes two different fiber bundles, one called LCB (Large Compact Bundle) with a field-of-view of 12.5x11.3 arcsec(2) and a spaxel size of 0.62 arcsec yielding spectral resolutions between R=6,800-17,000 and another one called SCB (Small Compact Bundle) covering 8.5x6.7 arcsec(2) with hexagonally-shaped and packed 0.42-arcsec spaxels and resolutions R=8,000-20,000. The MOS component allows observing up to 100 targets in 3.5x3.5 arcmin(2). Both the IFU bundles and the set of 100 robotic positioners of the MOS will be placed at one of the GTC Folded-Cass foci while the spectrographs (one in the case of the MEGARA-Basic concept) will be placed at the Nasmyth platform. On March 2012 MEGARA passed the Preliminary Design Review and its first light is expected to take place at the end of 2015.

We present an IRAC 3.6+4.5 microns selected catalog in the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) containing photometry from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared and stellar parameters derived from the analysis of the multi-wavelength data. In this paper, we describe the method used to build coherent spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for all the sources. In a companion paper, we analyze those SEDs to obtain robust estimations of stellar parameters such as photometric redshifts, stellar masses, and star formation rates. Considering that the recent history of E–S0 galaxies can be approximated by Pure Luminosity Evolution (PLE), we have examined a set of PLE models in order to delimit the epoch in which the majority of the red galaxy population moved away from this simple evolution framework. The models assume that they were assembled and formed most of their stars at a given formation redshift (z f), and that they have evolved without merging or substantial dust obscuration since then. Comparing the model predictions with real data, we conclude that most of E–S0’s at low and intermediate luminosities must have been progressively built up at 1 < z < 2, being the bulk of formation at z ∼ 1. 5, as recently claimed by several observational studies.

We present a study that links the Number Counts (NCs) to the rest-frame luminosity functions (LFs) at the passbands probed by the observed K-band at different epochs. Making use of a large K-band selected sample in the Groth Field, HDFN and CDFS ( ∼ 0. 27 deg2), we have derived highly reliable photometric redshift estimates that allow us to estimate LFs in the redshift range (0.25–1.25). We find that the larger flattening in the slope of the K-band NCs is mostly a consequence of a prominent decrease in the characteristic density (ϕ ∗) around z ∼ 1, and an almost flat evolution of M∗.

We present a short summary of the activities developed by GUAIX, the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) Group of Extragalactic Astrophysics and Astronomical Instrumentation. At present we are focused in the development of data reduction pipelines for several future instruments for the Spanish 10m GTC (Gran Telescopio Canarias). The careful treatment of the random error propagation throughout the data reduction is one of the main improvements of those pipelines. The first hardware development leaded by the GUAIX group will be FISIR, a fully-cryogenic (optimized for the K band) tunable filter in the near-infrared, to be installed within CIRCE, a near-IR camera for GTC.

We investigate the causes of the different shape of the $K$-band number counts when compared to other bands, analyzing in detail the presence of a change in the slope around $K\sim17.5$. We present a near-infrared imaging survey, conducted at the 3.5m telescope of the Calar Alto Spanish-German Astronomical Center (CAHA), covering two separated fields centered on the HFDN and the Groth field, with a total combined area of $\sim0.27$deg$^{2}$ to a depth of $K\sim19$ ($3\sigma$,Vega). We derive luminosity functions from the observed $K$-band in the redshift range [0.25-1.25], that are combined with data from the references in multiple bands and redshifts, to build up the $K$-band number count distribution. We find that the overall shape of the number counts can be grouped into three regimes: the classic Euclidean slope regime ($d\log N/dm\sim0.6$) at bright magnitudes; a transition regime at intermediate magnitudes, dominated by $M^{\ast}$ galaxies at the redshift that maximizes the product $\phi^{\ast}\frac{dV_{c}}{d\Omega}$; and an $\alpha$ dominated regime at faint magnitudes, where the slope asymptotically approaches -0.4($\alpha$+1) controlled by post-$M^{\ast}$ galaxies. We present the results of an Halpha near-infrared narrow-band survey searching for star-forming galaxies at redshift z=0.84. This work is an extension of our previous narrow-band studies in the optical at lower redshifts. After removal of stars and redshift interlopers (using spectroscopic and photometric redshifts), we build a complete sample of 165 Halpha emitters in the Extended Groth strip and GOODS-N fields with L(Halpha)>10^41 erg/s. We compute the Halpha luminosity function at z=0.84 after corrections for [NII] flux contamination, extinction, systematic errors, and incompleteness. Our sources present an average dust extinction of A(Halpha)=1.5 mag. Adopting Halpha as a surrogate for the instantaneous star formation rate (SFR), we measure a extinction-corrected SFR density of 0.17+-0.03 M_sun/yr/Mpc3. Combining this result to our prior measurements at z=0.02, 0.24, and 0.40, we derive an Halpha-based evolution of the SFR density proportional to (1+z)^beta with beta=3.8+-0.5. Summary. We present a long-term project to study the characteristics and evolution of current star-forming galaxies at different redshifts. The selection of the samples is carried out in an homogeneous way by detecting Hα emission-line objects in deep images taken with narrow-band filters tuned to the corresponding wavelength for a given redshift. In this way we are providing a complementary approach to the large program surveys using ultraviolet or infrared data. Already targeted redshifts are z =0 .24, z =0 .40 and z =0 .84. Here we present results from the three redshift bins, focusing into the cuasi-local z =0 .24 regime and the z =0 .84 regime, the last corresponding to an epoch of the Universe where most of the star formation rate (SFR) activity is supposed to happen. First we analyze photometric redshifts, emission-line luminosities, and multiband photometry for a sample of Hα emission-line galaxies at z =0 .24, selected in the 8,200˚ atmospheric window. The physical properties of these galaxies appear to be remarkably similar to those of local galaxies selected in the same way. Our results support the idea that the higher Star Formation Density measured at redshift z =0 .24 is due to an increase of the density of bursting galaxies and not to an intrinsic change on overall galaxy properties. We present results from the analysis of a sample of Hα emissionline galaxies at z =0 .84 selected by their contrast in a narrow-band filter centered in the near-infrared 1.21 µm region. The corresponding Hα luminosity function and infered SFR density, assuming an average extinction of AHα = 1 and a concordance cosmology, is 0.12 +0.03 0

La hemorroidectomia es una excelente tecnica para hemorroides grado III a IV pero va asociada invariablemente a dolor postoperatorio. La mucosectomia con estapler (PPH, Ethicon®) ha demostrado menores cifras de dolor y recuperacion mas rapida pero los seguimientos han sido aun breves. Objetivo: Se presenta nuestra experiencia con la tecnica PPH, evaluando dolor postoperatorio, complicaciones y recidiva a largo plazo. Material y metodo: Se analizan los protocolos prospectivos de pacientes operados de hemorroides grado III- IV o prolapso mucoso entre Abril de 2000 y Junio de 2004 en nuestro servicio, seleccionandose segun posibilidad de adquirir el instrumento PPH. Se evaluo dolor postoperatorio con escala EVA, siendo el seguimiento semanal por 1 mes, a los 6 meses y finalmente control telefonico. Resultados: Se estudian 62 pacientes (29 hombres, 33 mujeres). La hospitalizacion promedio fue de 1,4 dias (1-3) y el tiempo quirurgico de 39 minutos (20-60). El 94% de los pacientes no refirio dolor o este fue leve (EVA 0-3). Seis pacientes (10%) presentaron sangrado postoperatorio leve que cedio espontaneamente. Dos pacientes se reoperaron precozmente, uno por fisura anal persistente y otro por trombosis de hemorroides externos. En una media de seguimiento de 22 meses (rango 4 a 54 meses) a 43 pacientes (70% de la serie), la recidiva fue de 9,3%

We present a detailed and uniform study of C, S, Zn and Cu abundances in a large set of planet host stars, as well as in a homogeneous comparison sample of solar-type dwarfs with no known planetary-mass companions. Carbon abundances were derived by {EW} measurement of two C I optical lines, while spectral syntheses were performed for S, Zn and Cu. We investigated possible differences in the behaviours of the volatiles C, S and Zn and in the refractory Cu in targets with and without known planets in order to check possible anomalies due to the presence of planets. We found that the abundance distributions in stars with exoplanets are the high [Fe/H] extensions of the trends traced by the comparison sample. All volatile elements we studied show [X/Fe] trends decreasing with [Fe/H] in the metallicity range -0.8, Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

SHARDS (Survey for High-z Absorption Red & Dead Sources; see Pérez-González et al. 2012) is an optical ultra-deep spectro-photometric survey with OSIRIS-GTC aimed at selecting and studying massive passively evolving galaxies at z=1.0–2.3 in GOODS-North. Nonetheless, the data quality allow a plethora of studies on galaxy populations, including Emission Line Galaxies (ELGs) about which we have started our first science verification project. The selection procedure, measurement and first analysis of ELGs in SHARDS, demonstrate the huge capability of the survey in providing physical information for a large sample of emitters, spanning from local Hα to high-z Lyman-α emitters.

Accretion of minor satellites has been postulated as the most likely mechanism to explain the significant size evolution of massive galaxies over cosmic time. A direct way of probing this scenario is to measure the frequency of satellites around massive galaxies at different redshifts. Here we present our study of satellites around massive galaxies (Mstar ~ 1011 M⊙) up to z ~ 2. We find (Fig. 1) that the fraction of massive galaxies with satellites down to 1:10 mass ratio is ~15% (~30% down to 1:100), not varying with redshift (Mármol-Queraltó et al., (2012)). We also find that our satellites are younger than their central galaxies at low z (Mármol-Queraltó et al., 2013). Then, if minor merging is acting to form massive galaxies, their ourtskirts should be younger than their cores. The challenge to find this age gradient in nearby massive galaxies is opened.

Using a sample of ~28,000 sources selected at 3.6-4.5 microns with Spitzer observations of the HDF-N, the CDF-S, and the Lockman Hole (surveyed area: ~664 arcmin^2), we study the evolution of the stellar mass content of the Universe at 010^12.0 M_sun) assembled the bulk of their stellar content rapidly (in 1-2 Gyr) beyond z~3 in very intense star formation events (producing high specific SFRs). Galaxies with 10^11.52.5 is dominated by optically faint (R>25) red galaxies (Distant Red Galaxies or BzK sources) which account for ~30% of the global population of galaxies, but contribute at least 60% to the cosmic stellar mass density. Bluer galaxies (e.g., Lyman Break Galaxies) are more numerous but less massive, contributing less than 50% to the global stellar mass density at high redshift., Comment: Published in ApJ. 38 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables, 2 appendices.
