Fullerenes are interesting objects of research in view of their promising use as a nano-sized additive to coatings, films, adsorbents, as well as active components in medicine, pharmacy, cosmetology. This paper considers the possibility of modifying commercial adsorbents - silica gel and cation-exchanger based on activated carbon with available and inexpensive linear carbon radicals. Behentrimonium chloride (C22H45(CH3)3N +Cl- ) and cetyl alcohol (C16H33OН) were chosen as the latter. The obtained adsorbents were compared with a commercial sample of silica gel modified with a linear hydrocarbon radical –C18Н37. The adsorbents were described by the methods of IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, the main characteristics of the porous structure were determined by the method of low-temperature adsorption-desorption of nitrogen. Modification of adsorbents based on silica gel leads to a decrease in the specific surface area to 202.4 and 236.5 m² /g and the total pore volume to 0.32 and 0.39 cm³ /g, which is almost 2 half source material. Increasing the fraction of micropores contributes to better separation rates of large molecules. Treatment of cation-exchanger based on activated carbon by cation modifier leads to a significant decrease in the specific surface area, as well as to an increase in the size of pores with the predominant formation of mesopores. It is shown that the modification of silica gel is carried out both through silanol and siloxane groups, in contrast to the commercial sample of silica gel. The approximate number of modifier groups on the surface of the original SiO2 matrix was estimated, which is one modifier group ~ per 11 SiO2 molecules. To study the behavior of adsorption of C60, C70 fullerenes and their mixtures on adsorbents, column experiments were carried out with changes in the geometrical parameters of the column and the initial concentrations of the solutions. The results showed that the modified silica gels are potential adsorbents for the separation of a mixture of fullerenes with a ratio of 65/25. Silica gel modified with cetyl alcohol C16H33OH showed the best separation efficiency. By the help of an adsorbent, it is possible to separate C60 - 90.52 % from a less concentrated solution and 87.26 % from a more concentrated solution. To increase the purity of the product, it is necessary to pass the solution through the sorbent 2–3 times. The competitive capability of the proposed modified silica gels, together with economic efficiency, ease of modification, and the possibility of fullerene separation characterize the proposed adsorbents as potential materials for practical application. The pressure losses during the supply of a vertical two-phase flow of a mixture of water and abrasive particles were studied experimentally. Distinguishing between components (stomatal conductivity, mesophyll conductivity, carbon dioxide fixation in chloroplasts, and respiration) of the complex biochemical mechanism of plant photosynthesis is a challenging problem. To solve it, we used both experimental data obtained in natural conditions (time series of recorded indicators) and a specially designed experiment: determination of carbon dioxide compensation points. A specialized processing method (balanced identification) and the corresponding information technology made it possible to consider a number of models, unbiasedly evaluate the significance of the hypotheses, and determine the errors of models describing the dataset. The evolutionary method of modifying models (from simple to complex, with modeling error as the selection criterion) made it possible to choose a model whose complexity corresponds to the used experimental data. The model thus constructed is applied to calculate the assimilation of CO2 by forest ecosystems and WUE (Water Use Efficiency). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the phenotypic composition of the populations and variability of songs in two bunting species in three localities on the western border of the sympatry zone: in the southern part of Tyumen’ oblast and in the center and southern of Kurgan oblast. Over the last several decades, the zone of contact of the studied species has expanded significantly. The pine bunting started breeding regularly in the area at the end of the 20th century, and at present it is considered a common species comparable in abundance to the yellowhammer. The share of phenotypic hybrids varies from 25 to 50% reaching its maximum at the boundary of the pine bunting’s nesting range. East of this boundary, the hybridization level is reduced, this being seen in a sharp decrease in the share of “leucocephala hybrids.” An analysis of the phenotypic variability of the hybrids shows that they can be divided into two groups similar in coloration to the parental species. The study results let us presume that the hybridization is limited and hybrids return mostly to backcrossing with the parental species. This presumption also finds support in an analysis of the song structure: the yellowhammer and the pine bunting have songs of different, easily distinguishable dialects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A growing body of work suggests that breeding birds have a significant capacity to assess and respond, over ecological time, to changes in the risk of predation to both themselves and their eggs or nestlings. This review investigates the nature of this flexibility in the face of predation from both behavioural and reproductive perspectives, and also explores several directions for future research. Most available work addresses different aspects of nest predation. A substantial change in breeding location is perhaps the best documented response to nest predation, but such changes are not always observed and not necessarily the best strategy. Changes in nesting microhabitat (to more concealed locations) following predation are known to occur. Surprisingly little work addresses the proactive avoidance of areas with many nest predators, but such avoidance is probably widespread. Individual birds could conceivably adopt anti-predator strategies based on the nest predators actually present in an area, but such effects have yet to be demonstrated. In fact, the ways in which birds assess the risk of nest predation is unclear. Nest defence in birds has historically received much attention, but little is known about how it interacts with other aspects of decision-making by parents. Other studies concentrate on predation risk to adults. Some findings suggest that risk to adults themselves influences territory location, especially relative to raptor nests. An almost completely unexplored area concerns the sorts of social protection from predators that might exist during the breeding season. Flocking typical of the non-breeding season appears unusual while breeding, but a mated pair may sometimes act as a “flock of two”. Opportunistic heterospecific sociality may exist, with heterospecific protector species associations more prevalent than currently appreciated. The dynamics of singing during the breeding season may also respond to variation in predation risk, but empirical research on this subject is limited. Furthermore, a few theoretical and empirical studies suggest that changes in predation risk also influence the behaviour of lekking males. The major influence of predators on avian life histories is undoubtedly expressed at a broad phylogenetic scale, but several studies hint at much flexibility on an ecological time scale. Some species may forgo breeding completely if the risk of nest predation is too high, and a few studies document smaller clutch sizes in response to an increase in nest predation. Recent evidence suggests that a female may produce smaller eggs rather than smaller clutches following an increase in nest predation risk. Such an increase may also influence decisions about intraspecific brood parasitism. There are no clear examples of changes in clutch/egg size with changes in risk experienced by adults, but parental responses to predators have clear consequences for offspring fitness. Changes in risk to adults may also influence body mass changes across the breeding season, although research here is sparse. A new model for the ionization depth distribution function has been proposed. Within the framework of this model full electron flux is considered to be divided into two fluxes propagating in forward and backward directions through a sample. The intensities of these fluxes can be derived on the basis of simple assumptions of electron-solid interactions. The approach can be effectively applied to a system with an arbitrary form of depth concentration profile. The obtained results are in reasonable agreement with Monte Carlo simulations and experimental results.
