Lipid tracers including fatty acids, hydroxyacids, n-alkanols, sterols and triterpenoids were used to determine the origin and fate of suspended particulate organic matter (POM) collected in the Rhône River (France). This seasonal survey (April 2011 to May 2013) revealed a year-round strong terrestrial higher-plant contribution to the particulate organic matter (POM), with significant algal inputs observed in March and attributed to phytoplanktonic blooms likely dominated by diatoms. Major terrigenous contributors to our samples are gymnosperms, and more precisely their roots and stems, as evidenced by the presence of high proportions of ω-hydroxydocosanoic acid (a suberin biomarker). The high amounts of coprostanol detected clearly show that the Rhône River is significantly affected by sewage waters. Specific sterol degradation products were quantified and used to assess the part of biotic and abiotic degradation of POM within the river. Higher-plant-derived organic matter appears to be mainly affected by photo-oxidation and autoxidation (free radical oxidation), while organic matter of mammal or human origin, evidenced by the presence of coprostanol, is clearly more prone to bacterial degradation. Despite the involvement of an intense autoxidation-inducing homolytic cleavage of peroxy bonds, a significant proportion of hydroperoxides is still intact in higher plant debris. These compounds could affect the degradation of terrestrial material by inducing an intense autoxidation upon its arrival at sea.

Objectives: Catch-up saccades help to compensate for loss of gaze stabilization during rapid head rotation in case of vestibular deficit. While overt saccades observed after head rotation are obviously visually guided, some of these catch-up saccades occur with shorter latency while the head is still moving, anticipating the needed final eye position. These covert saccades seem to be generated based on the integration of multisensory inputs. Vision could be one of these inputs, but the known delay for triggering visually guided saccades questions this possibility. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the potential role of visual information for controlling (triggering and guiding) the first catch-up saccades in patients suffering from bilateral vestibulopathy. To investigate this, we used head impulse test in a virtual reality setting allowing to create different visuo-vestibular mismatch conditions., Design: Twelve patients with bilateral vestibulopathy were recruited. We assessed in our patient group the validity of our virtual reality head impulse testing approach by comparing recorded eye and head movement to classical video head impulse test. Then, using the virtual reality system, we tested head impulse test under both normal and three visuo-vestibular mismatch conditions. In these mismatch conditions, the movement of the visual scene relative to the head movement was altered: decreased in amplitude by 50% (half), nullified (freeze), or inverted in direction (inverse). Recorded eye and head movements during these different conditions were then analyzed, more specifically the characteristics of the first catch-up saccade., Results: Impaired vestibulo-ocular reflex required subjects to systematically perform catch-up saccades, which could be covert or overt. The latency of the first catch-up saccade increased along with the amount of visuo-vestibular mismatch between the four conditions (i.e., from normal to half to freeze to inverse) and, consequently, the mean percentage of covert saccades decreased with increasing visual feedback error. However, the freeze and inverse conditions allowed us to reveal the existence of many saccades performed in the wrong direction relative to visual feedback. These visually discordant saccades were present in over half of the trials, they were mainly covert and their percentage was inversely correlated with residual vestibulo-ocular reflex gain., Conclusions: Visual information significantly impacts catch-up saccade latency and the relative number of covert saccades during head impulse testing in vestibular deficit. However, in more than 50% of trials involving a visuo-vestibular mismatch, catch-up saccades remained directed in the compensatory direction relative to head movement, that is, they were visually discordant. Therefore, contrary to previously published proposals, visual information does not appear to be the primary component of the multisensory inputs required for the production of catch-up covert saccades in vestibular deficit. Long-term deficits of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) elicited by head rotation can be partially compensated by catch-up saccades (CuS). These saccades are initially visually guided, but their latency can greatly decrease resulting in short latency CuS (SL-CuS). It is still unclear what triggers these CuS and what are the underlying neural circuits. In this study, we aimed at evaluating the impact of cerebellar pathology on CuS by comparing their characteristics between two groups of patients with bilateral vestibular hypofunction, with or without additional cerebellar dysfunction. We recruited 12 patients with both bilateral vestibular hypofunction and cerebellar dysfunction (BVH-CD group) and 12 patients with isolated bilateral vestibular hypofunction (BVH group). Both groups were matched for age and residual VOR gain. Subjects underwent video head impulse test recording of the horizontal semicircular canals responses as well as recording of visually guided saccades in the step, gap, and overlap paradigms. Latency and gain of the different saccades were calculated. The mean age for BVH-CD and BVH was, respectively, 67.8 and 67.2 years, and the mean residual VOR gain was, respectively, 0.24 and 0.26. The mean latency of the first catch-up saccade was significantly longer for the BVH-CD group than that for the BVH group (204 ms vs 145 ms, p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the latency of visually guided saccades between the two groups, for none of the three paradigms. The gain of covert saccades tended to be lower in the BVH-CD group than in BVH group (t test; p = 0.06). The mean gain of the 12° or 20° visually guided saccades were not different in both groups. Organochlorinated compounds including PolyChloroBiphenyles, Dichloro-DiphenylTrichloroethan and metabolites are determinated in Stenella coeruleoalba (n = 37) stranded on the french Mediterranean coasts from 2007 till 2009. Studies are carried out on lung, muscle, kidney, liver, and blubber. The sought-after compounds are all detected to variable levels in each tissue and organ. In general, total PCBs are the most abundant, followed by total DDTs. The concentration (in ng g(-1) of lipid weight) in blubber of S. coeruleoalba, varied from 2,052 to 158,992 for PCBs and from 1,120 to 45,779 for DDTs. The ratios DDE/tDDTs are higher than 80% in almost all samples. The overall results of this work, compared to previous studies concerning the Mediterranean Sea, seems to confirm the tendency to a decrease of the contamination by organics compounds for the cetaceans in the Western Mediterranean Sea., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. We assessed spatial patterns in 37 PCB congeners, eight pesticides, and the heavy metals mercury and cadmium in the flatfish Solea solea at four sites in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean). Overall contaminant concentrations generally exceeded those reported for S. solea elsewhere, but fell into the range of other Gulf fishes, testifying of a relatively high contaminant load of this area. Spatial patterns in all three contaminant classes were highly significant, but differed among classes. PCB congener and chlorination class profiles also differed among sites. The observed patterns would be consistent with (1) PCB point-sources in the Eastern Gulf (Marseille, Rhone River) versus dominance of atmospheric input in the West, (2) pesticide input by the Rhone and from agricultural fields in the West, and (3) mercury point-sources near Marseille. The unique, site-specific contaminant profiles prove to be a powerful tool to differentiate between S. solea populations from different sites.

This study was aimed at semi-quantifying the membrane density of multixenobiotic resistance (MXR) transporters in Chironomidae Orthocladiinae larvae from an urban stream by ELISA assay. The relationships between the MXR transporter membrane density and limnological parameters and pollutant concentrations, 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as per the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and seven polychlorobiphenyl congeners (PCBs), were assessed. Midge larvae were collected, and limnological parameters and pollutant concentrations were measured in three sites of a French Mediterranean urban stream, two located after sewage treatment plants, and one closed to the river mouth, and in two additional sites, one on the stream tributary, and one in a non-urbanized stream located in the same region. Results show that the PAH and PCB contamination levels are different between sites and that some congener concentrations are above their threshold toxic effect level (TEL). The MXR transporter membrane density was significantly higher in larvae from the tributary, the most polluted site, as compared with larvae from the non-urbanized stream. The MXR transporter density was positively correlated with 10 of the 16 US-EPA PAH concentrations and the increase in the MXR transporter density seems to be due to the US-EPA PAH concentrations that were above their TEL. No relations with PCB concentrations or limnological parameters were found. The results suggest that the MXR transporter membrane density in Chironomidae larvae could be an interesting biological marker of PAH exposure in freshwater ecosystems.

The objective of the present study is to determine the levels of contamination by PCBs, DDT and its metabolites in dolphins failed on the coasts of the Mediterranean sea. Samples are represented by six Stenella coeruleoalba and a Tursiops truncatus collected in 2000 and 2003. The studies are achieved on the blubber, the heart, the liver, the kidney, the muscle and the lung. The concentrations of PCBs and DDT are very high in all tissues and organs analyzed. For the PCBs, the concentrations vary between 43,838 and 110,343 microg/kg lipid basis in the blubber, 601 and 39444 microg/kg dried weight in the liver, 1375 and 34512 microg/kg dried weight in the muscle, 3151 and 17082 microg/kg dried weight in the heart, 674 and 12365 microg/kg dried weight in the kidney and finally between 648 and 4118 microg/kg dried weight in the lung. These values are comparable to those previously obtained in our laboratory and by other authors during the years 1990 on the Mediterranean environment. Significant differences in concentrations are noted in tissues and organs, neither according to the age, nor according to the gender. In all the analyzed samples, the contents in PCBs are higher than those of DDT. The average ratios of pp'-DDE/SigmaDDT are close to 0.6 which shows the metabolization of these compounds along the years. The examination of the profiles of congeners shows that the hexachlorinated molecules are dominating in all tissues and organs which supposes the different animals were especially exposed to Pyralen-type compounds of transformer (Dp6).
