Abstract: Abstract The Pandora Software Development Kit and algorithm libraries provide pattern-recognition logic essential to the reconstruction of particle interactions in liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. Pandora is the primary event reconstruction software used at ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment far detector. ProtoDUNE-SP, located at CERN, is exposed to a charged-particle test beam. This paper gives an overview of the Pandora reconstruction algorithms and how they have been tailored for use at ProtoDUNE-SP. In complex events with numerous cosmic-ray and beam background particles, the simulated reconstruction and identification efficiency for triggered test-beam particles is above 80% for the majority of particle type and beam momentum combinations. Specifically, simulated 1 GeV/c charged pions and protons are correctly reconstructed and identified with efficiencies of 86.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 % and 84.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 %, respectively. The efficiencies measured for test-beam data are shown to be within 5% of those predicted by the simulation.

Abstract: Abstract The ratio R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ = Γ(K S → πeν)/Γ(K S → π + π − ) has been measured with a sample of 300 million K S mesons produced in ϕ → K L K S decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE e + e − collider. K S → πeν events are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and time-of-flight measurements. Data control samples of K L → πeν decays are used to evaluate signal selection efficiencies. With 49647±316 signal events we measure R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ = (1.0421 ± 0.0066stat ± 0.0075syst) × 10 −3. The combination with our previous measurement gives R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ = (1.0338 ± 0.0054stat ± 0.0064syst) × 10 −3. From this value we derive the branching fraction B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (K S → πeν) = (7.153 ± 0.037stat ± 0.044syst) × 10 −4 and f +(0)|V us | = 0.2170 ± 0.009.

Abstract: Tests of the T, CP and CPT symmetries in the neutral kaon system are performed by the direct comparison of the probabilities of a kaon transition process to its symmetry-conjugate. The exchange of in and out states required for a genuine test involving an antiunitary transformation implied by time-reversal is implemented exploiting the entanglement of K0K‾0 pairs produced at a ϕ-factory.A data sample collected by the KLOE experiment at DAΦNE corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb−1 is analysed to study the Δt distributions of the ϕ→KSKL→π+π−π±e∓ν and ϕ→KSKL→π±e∓ν3π0 processes, with Δt the difference of the kaon decay times. A comparison of the measured Δt distributions in the asymptotic region Δt≫τS allows to test for the first time T and CPT symmetries in kaon transitions with a precision of few percent, and to observe CP violation with this novel method.

Abstract: An overview is presented of the progress since 2021 in the construction and scientific programme preparation of the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility. Licensing for building construction has been granted at the end of 2021. Licensing for Cat. A radiologic source has been also granted in 2022. The construction of the toroidal field magnet system is progressing. The prototype of the 170 GHz gyrotron has been produced and it is now under test on the FALCON facility. The design of the vacuum vessel, the poloidal field coils and the civil infrastructures has been completed. The shape of the first DTT divertor has been agreed with EUROfusion to test different plasma and exhaust scenarios: single null, double null, X-divertor and negative triangularity plasmas. A detailed research plan is being elaborated with the involvement of the EUROfusion laboratories.

Abstract: Abstract The quantum interference between the decays of entangled neutral kaons is studied in the process ϕ → KSKL → π + π − π + π − , which exhibits the characteristic Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations that prevent both kaons to decay into π + π − at the same time. This constitutes a very powerful tool for testing at the utmost precision the quantum coherence of the entangled kaon pair state, and to search for tiny decoherence and CPT $$ \mathcal{CPT} $$ violation effects, which may be justified in a quantum gravity framework. The analysed data sample was collected with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb −1, i.e. to about 1.7 × 109 ϕ → KSKL decays produced. From the fit of the observed ∆t distribution, being ∆t the difference of the kaon decay times, the decoherence and CPT $$ \mathcal{CPT} $$ violation parameters of various phenomenological models are measured with a largely improved accuracy with respect to previous analyses. The results are consistent with no deviation from quantum mechanics and CPT $$ \mathcal{CPT} $$ symmetry, while for some parameters the precision reaches the interesting level at which — in the most optimistic scenarios — quantum gravity effects might show up. They provide the most stringent limits up to date on the considered models.

Abstract: Abstract Based on an integrated luminosity of 1.61 fb −1 e + e − collision data collected with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, a search for the P- and CP-violating decay η → π + π − has been performed. Radiative ϕ → ηγ decay is exploited to access the η mesons. No signal is observed in the π + π − invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit on the branching fraction at 90% confidence level is determined to be ℬ(η → π + π − ) < 4.9 × 10 −6, which is approximately three times smaller than the previous KLOE result. From the combination of these two measurements we get ℬ(η → π + π − ) < 4.4 × 10 −6 at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Abstract The determination of low-energy cross sections and branching ratios of the $$\hbox {K}^-$$ K- multi-nucleon absorption processes in $$\Lambda \hbox {p}$$ Λp and $$\Sigma ^0\hbox {p}$$ Σ0p final states performed by the AMADEUS collaboration is presented. Low momentum $$\hbox {K}^-$$ K- ($$p_{\mathrm{K}} \simeq 127\ \hbox {MeV}/\hbox {c}$$ pK≃127MeV/c ) produced at the $$\hbox {DA}\Phi \hbox {NE}$$ DAΦNE collider are impinged on a Carbon target within the KLOE detector and the two and three nucleon absorption processes are disentangled by comparing the experimental data to phenomenological calculations. The $$\Lambda \hbox {p}$$ Λp spectra are interpreted in terms of $$\hbox {K}^{-}$$ K- multi-nucleon absorption processes; the possible contribution of a $$\hbox {K}^{-}\hbox {pp}$$ K-pp bound state is demonstrated to overlap with the two nucleon capture process, its absolute yield thus resulting indistinguishable.

Abstract: Based on a sample of 300 million KS mesons produced in ϕ→KLKS decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE e+e− collider we have measured the branching fraction for the decay KS→πμν. The KS mesons are identified by the interaction of KL mesons in the detector. The KS→πμν decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and by a time-of-flight measurement. Signal efficiencies are evaluated with data control samples of KL→πμν decays. A fit to the reconstructed muon mass distribution finds 7223±180 signal events. Normalising to the KS→π+π− decay events the result for the branching fraction is B(KS→πμν)=(4.56±0.11stat±0.17syst)×10−4. It is the first measurement of this decay mode and the result allows an independent determination of |Vus| and a test of the lepton-flavour universality. Abstract: We searched for the μ+μ− decay of a light vector gauge boson, also known as dark photon, in the e+e−→μ+μ−γISR process by means of the Initial State Radiation (ISR) method. We used 1.93 fb−1 of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ-factory. No structures have been observed over the irreducible μ+μ− background. A 90% CL limit on the ratio ε2=α′/α between the dark coupling constant and the fine structure constant of 3×10−6–2×10−7 has been set in the dark photon mass region between 519 MeV and 973 MeV. This new limit has been combined with the published result obtained investigating the hypothesis of the dark photon decaying into hadrons in e+e−→π+π−γISR events. The combined 90% CL limit increases the sensitivity especially in the ρ–ω interference region and excludes ε2 greater than (13−2)×10−7. For dark photon masses greater than 600 MeV the combined limit is lower than 8 ×10−7 resulting more stringent than present constraints from other experiments. Abstract: Abstract Using 1.63 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected by the KLOE experiment about 7 × 104 K S → π ± e ∓ ν decays have been reconstructed. The measured value of the charge asymmetry for this decay is A S = (−4.9 ± 5.7stat ± 2.6syst) × 10−3, which is almost twice more precise than the previous KLOE result. The combination of these two measurements gives A S = (−3.8 ± 5.0stat ± 2.6syst) × 10−3 and, together with the asymmetry of the K L semileptonic decay, provides significant tests of the CPT symmetry. The obtained results are in agreement with CPT invariance.

Abstract: We present the analysis of K− absorption processes on He4 leading to Λπ− final states, measured with the KLOE spectrometer at the DAΦNE e+e− collider and extract, for the first time, the modulus of the non-resonant K−n →Λπ− direct production amplitude about 33 MeV below the K‾N threshold. This analysis also allows to disentangle the K− nuclear absorption at-rest from the in-flight capture, for K− momenta of about 120 MeV. The data are interpreted with the help of a phenomenological model, and the modulus of the non-resonant K−n →Λπ− amplitude for K− absorption at-rest is found to be |AK−n→Λπ−|=(0.334±0.018stat−0.058+0.034syst)fm. Abstract: Abstract The three precision measurements of the cross section σ(e + e − → π + π −γ(γ)) using initial state radiation by the KLOE collaboration provide an important input for the prediction of the hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. These measurements are correlated for both statistical and systematic uncertainties and, therefore, the simultaneous use of these measurements requires covariance matrices that fully describe the correlations. We present the construction of these covariance matrices and use them to determine a combined KLOE measurement for σ(e + e − → π + π −γ(γ)). We find, from this combination, a two-pion contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly in the energy range 0.10 < s < 0.95 GeV2 of a μ π + π − = 489.8 ± 1.7 stat ± 4.8 s y s × 10 − 10 $$ {a}_{\mu}^{\pi^{+}{\pi}^{-}}=\left(489.8\pm {1.7}_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm {4.8}_{\mathrm{sys}}\right)\times {10}^{-10} $$ . Abstract: The existence of a new force beyond the Standard Model is compelling because it could explain several striking astrophysical observations which fail standard interpretations. We searched for the light vector mediator of this dark force, the U boson, with the KLOE detector at the DAΦNE e+e− collider. Using an integrated luminosity of 1.54 fb−1, we studied the process e+e−→Uγ, with U→e+e−, using radiative return to search for a resonant peak in the dielectron invariant-mass distribution. We did not find evidence for a signal, and set a 90% CL upper limit on the mixing strength between the Standard Model photon and the dark photon, ε2, at 10−6–10−4 in the 5–520 MeV/c2 mass range.

Abstract: We have studied the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay ϕ→ηe+e−, with η→π0π0π0, with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE. The data set of 1.7 fb−1 of e+e− collisions at s∼Mϕ contains a clear conversion decay signal of ∼31,000 events from which we measured a value of BR(ϕ→ηe+e−)=(1.075±0.007±0.038)×10−4. The same sample is used to determine the transition form factor by a fit to the e+e− invariant mass spectrum, obtaining bϕη=(1.28±0.10−0.08+0.09) GeV−2, that improves by a factor of five the precision of the previous measurement and is in good agreement with VMD expectations. 20. P-801 Human endometrial Organoids (hEOs): a non invasive powerful tool to study receptivity and a step forward precision medicine in IVF

Summary answer This research provides a reliable and less invasive 3D endometrial model able to mimic the window of implantation (WOI). What is known already Investigating the physiology and function of the normal cycling endometrium is challenging due to its great individual variability. hEOs are considered a new step forward in precision medicine and a tool for the study of endometrial biology, associated diseases (i.e. endometriosis) and to understand the complex mechanism surrounding endometrium-embryo cross talk. During the WOI apical cytoplasmic protrusions traditionally called “pinopodes” are reported to be a specific marker of endometrial receptivity.Initially hypothesized to form at the sites of blastocyst attachment, pinopodes have typically been correlated with successful implantation and are strongly regulated by the ovarian steroid hormones. Study design, size, duration hEOs are usually obtained from endometrial biopsy, here a much less invasive source was employed. Menstrual blood (MB) retrieved by menstrual cups was processed to isolate epithelial (Ep) and stromal endometrial cells (hESC). hEOswere created to investigate the morphological changes occurring in vivo during the menstrual cycle, specifically at the WOI. For a proof of concept, we recruited five healthy volunteers from January 2021 to december 2022 signing an informed written consent for this study. Participants/materials, setting, methods All the participants provided written informed consent for the use of their MB samples. Female healthy volunteers received instruction for the use of menstrual cups. hEOs obtained from MB have been exposed to hormonal treatments to mimic the endometrial hormonal milieu typical of the proliferative and mid secretory phase of the menstrual cycle. Cultured hEOs were then observed in a Quanta 400 (FEI) scanning electron microscope (SEM). Main results and the role of chance In this study we succeeded to establish a reliable 3Dmodel using both Ep cells and hESC using a less invasive approach. The hEOs generated from the co-culture of these two types of cells were used to mimic the mid secretory phase. The expansion media has been supplemented with 10 − 8 M E2 + 10 − 6 M P4 and 50 mM cAMP. Treated hEOs have been cultured for 4 days; washed with PBS and fixed for 2 h at 4 °C in cold Karnovsky’s. Using Scanning electron Microscopy, we closely observed the luminal surface of hEOs in the proliferative phase. The inner side of Ep cells was characterized by the presence of pinopodes large 5-10 μm, apical plasma membrane of uterine epithelial cells protrusions, not present in unstimulated hEOs. Generally, during days 17-19 of the menstrual cycle, cellular bulging increases with the formation of small (1-2 μm) pinopodes. Their full development was reported to be present at day 20and is a specific marker of the WOI. Limitations, reasons for caution There are discrepancies in the literature regarding pinopode morphology on specific days of the cycle, and of course, these changes may vary between individuals. Further studies, comprising individuals undergoing IVF treatments should be explored. Wider implications of the findings Effective and reliable embryo implantation modeling is necessary to mimic the molecular event cascade that occurs in vivo. Pinopodes responds to stimuli, in particular to Progesterone, these findings can be used to calibrate hormonal treatments of women undergoing IVF. Trial registration number Not applicable

Abstract: In this paper we report the reflection efficiency measurements of the VOXES Von Hamos (VH) spectrometer, based on HAPG mosaic crystals, together with ray tracing simulation results. Von Hamos spectrometers are widely used in several fields, ranging from fundamental physics to various practical applications. These types of Bragg spectrometers are usually used in high rate–high resolution experiments, where the typical source size can be as low as a few tens of microns. The VOXES collaboration at the INFN Laboratories of Frascati recently developed a VH spectrometer, making use of HAPG mosaic crystals and optimized X-ray beam optics, which could be used for source sizes up to a few mm in the Bragg plane and some tens of mm in the sagittal plane. Such a spectrometer may open a new era in the field of exotic (kaonic) atom precision measurements, delivering data with unprecedented precision to the nuclear physics community. In order to plan the use of this spectrometer the capabilities in terms of signal collection efficiency need to be checked, reliable ray tracing simulations have to be developed and consistency between data and simulations has to be verified. In this paper, we present this crosscheck for a ρ = 206.7 mm cylindrically bent HAPG crystal using CuKα1,2 and FeKα1,2 XRF lines. For both of them, the experimental results and the simulations are found to be in good agreement within the errors.

TASRs are reported to be involved in signal transduction cascade induced by chemotactic activation in spermatozoa and the expression of TAS2Rs in ejaculated human sperm has been demonstrated. The presence of these receptors in male reproductive system and in sperm gives cues to investigate their possible role in sperm-oocyte interaction. Functional implications have been collected indicating that taste receptors are also important to increase the number of highly fertilization-competent sperm cells within the female genital tract hypothesizing a role in the field of female reproduction. Study design, size, duration We enrolled for this study 30patients undergoing IVF cycles because of couple infertilityfrom June 2019 to October 2020at the UOSA of Assisted Reproductive techniques, Siena University Hospital(Italy). Participants/materials, setting, methods Female patients referring to UOSA of Assisted Reproductive techniques(median age 35 years) underwent a personalised controlled ovarian hyperstimulation protocol. After oocyte pickup, GCs were isolated from the follicular fluid through differential gradient. CCs were collected after oocytes denuding. TAS2Rs and genes involved in the transduction cascade elicited expression/localization in both GCs and CCs were confirmed by Droplet Digital PCR, western blot andimmunofluorescence. Main results and the role of chance For the first time, the expression and cellular localization of the TAS2Rs (TAS2R3, TAS2R4, TAS2R14, TAS2R19 and TAS2R43), their G-coupled proteins (GNAT1 orα-transducinandGNAT3 or α-gustducin) and enzymes involved in the transduction signal (PDE4A, TRPM5 and PLCB2)were demonstrated in the female reproductive system. Overall expression of TAS2Rs emerged higher in GCs than in CCs, confirming the specific molecular fingerprinting during differentiation of ovarian somatic cells. TAS2R14 is the most expressed gene in both GCs and CCs, this could account for its potential involvement in follicular cells physiology and/or for a key role of this receptor in fertilization, as supported by data showing TAS2R14 to be correlated with sperm progressive motility. We demonstrated a positive correlation in GCs between the expression of the TAS2Rs and GNAT3; interestingly, when each subset of TAS2Rs genes was correlated with the signaling gene, TAS2R14 emerged as the one with the higher correlation with GNAT3. Immunofluorescence showed different localization of TAS2Rs and their G-coupled proteins between GCs and CCs. Interestingly some of them presented some fluorescent granules, suggesting a possible involvement of proteins in membrane trafficking. Finally, results of G-coupled proteins western blot, revealed the higher expression of α-gustducin then α-transducin, confirming the gene expression. Limitations, reasons for caution All findings have to be validated in a larger cohort. Moreover, our data pave the way to the understanding of biological functions exerted by these receptors in the female reproductive tract. Wider implications of the findings Further studies might contribute to better understanding the physiologic role of taste receptorsfemale reproductive system. Abstract: Purpose: The Italian Society of Contraception identified as one of its priorities the need to give recommendations on management of contraception during Coronavirus-Covid 19 pandemia Materials and methods: A concise communication was produced which summarises in an easy-to-read format suitable for clinicians the management of the different contraceptives mostly used. Information how to manage contraception in different conditions is presented. Results: Women may, in general, continue to use either intrauterine and or hormonal contraceptives. The use of condom should be added to any hormonal contraceptive, when the contraceptive efficacy is reduced or when women stop the contraceptive method. Conclusion: At the present time, during the Coronavirus-Covid 19 pandemia, no data contraindicate the use of intrauterine or hormonal contraceptives. Conversely the use of an appropriate contraception is advocate to prevent unintended pregnancies.

Abstract: In this work, we present an investigation of the wind in the solar corona that has been initiated by observations of the resonantly scattered ultraviolet emission of the coronal plasma obtained with UVCS-SOHO, designed to measure the wind outflow speed by applying Doppler dimming diagnostics. Metis on Solar Orbiter complements the UVCS spectroscopic observations that were performed during solar activity cycle 23 by simultaneously imaging the polarized visible light and the H I Lyman-alpha corona in order to obtain high spatial and temporal resolution maps of the outward velocity of the continuously expanding solar atmosphere. The Metis observations, taken on May 15, 2020, provide the first H I Lyman-alpha images of the extended corona and the first instantaneous map of the speed of the coronal plasma outflows during the minimum of solar activity and allow us to identify the layer where the slow wind flow is observed. The polarized visible light (580-640 nm) and the ultraviolet H I Ly alpha (121.6 nm) coronal emissions, obtained with the two Metis channels, were combined in order to measure the dimming of the UV emission relative to a static corona. This effect is caused by the outward motion of the coronal plasma along the direction of incidence of the chromospheric photons on the coronal neutral hydrogen. The plasma outflow velocity was then derived as a function of the measured Doppler dimming. The static corona UV emission was simulated on the basis of the plasma electron density inferred from the polarized visible light. This study leads to the identification, in the velocity maps of the solar corona, of the high-density layer about +/- 10 degrees wide, centered on the extension of a quiet equatorial streamer present at the east limb - the coronal origin of the heliospheric current sheet - where the slowest wind flows at about 160 +/- 18 km s(-1) from 4 R-circle dot to 6 R-circle dot. Beyond the boundaries of the high-density layer, the wind velocity rapidly increases, marking the transition between slow and fast wind in the corona.

Abstract: Hydrophobic PbS nanocrystals (NCs) emitting in the near infrared spectral region were encapsulated in the core of micelles and in the bilayer of liposomes, respectively, to form polyethylene glycol (PEG)-grafted phospholipids. The phospholipid-based functionalization process of PbS NCs required the replacement of the pristine capping ligand at the NC surface with thiol molecules. The procedures carried out for two systems, micelles and liposomes, using PEG-modified phospholipids were carefully monitored by optical, morphological and structural investigations. The hydrodynamic diameter and the colloidal stability of both micelles and liposomes loaded with PbS NCs were evaluated using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and ζ-potential experiments, and both were satisfactorily stable in physiological media. The cytotoxicity of the resulting PbS NC-loaded nanovectors was assessed by the in vitro investigation on Saos-2 cells, indicating that the toxicity of the PbS NC loaded liposomes was lower than that of the micelles with the same NC cargo, which is reasonable due to the different overall composition of the two prepared nanocarriers. Finally, the cellular uptake in the Saos-2 cells of both the NC containing systems was evaluated by means of confocal microscopy studies by exploiting a visible fluorescent phospholipid and demonstrating the ability of both luminescent nanovectors to be internalized. The obtained results show the great potential of the prepared emitting nanoprobes for imaging applications in the second biological window.

Abstract: Are cohesins SA1/SA2 and the NAD-dependent deacetylase SIRT1 involved in telomere homeostasis of cumulus cells and thus eligible as biomarkers of follicular physiology and ovarian aging?SA1/SA2 cohesins and SIRT1 are associated with telomere length in cumulus cells and may be eligible biomarkers of follicular physiology and ovarian aging.In somatic cells, cohesins SA1/SA2 mediate sister chromatid cohesion at the telomere termini (for SA1) and along chromatid arms (for SA2). The NAD+-dependent protein deacetylase Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), which preserves DNA integrity from oxidative stress, may also modulate genome stability and telomere length.Collectively 280 cumulus/oocyte complex samples were recovered from a total of 50 women undergoing in vitro fertilization.Cumulus cells were separated from the oocyte-cumulus complex. DNA and total mRNA were extracted from cumulus cells and assayed for telomere length and for SA1, SA2 and SIRT1 gene expression profiling. Telomere length was determined by quantitave PCR and analyzed relative to the single copy of the housekeeping gene (albumin) to generate a T/S ratio (Telomere/single copy gene). Gene expression levels of SA1, SA2 and SIRT1 mRNA were assayed by quantitative RT-PCR and confirmed by western blotting and immunofluorescent studies (SIRT1). SA1/SA2 and SIRT1 gene expression levels and telomere length analysis of patients/samples were ranked in relation to their clinical setting parameters (BMI, age) and to the number of oocyte retrieved.SA1 and SA2 transcripts were both detected in all cumulus cells analyzed and the relative amount showed a clear decreasing trend according to the age of patients. A significant increase in SA1 and SA2 was disclosed in high responder women (6 oocytes retrieved) compared to poor responders (4 oocytes) (P0.05). Furthermore, statistically significant positive correlations were also recorded between the transcripts levels of the two cohesin molecules (r = 0.89; P0.05) and, to a lesser extent, between telomere length and SA1 (r = 0.42; P0.001) and SA2 (r = 0.36; P0.001) mRNA levels. SIRT1 expression was also significantly increased in high responders (6 oocytes) compared to poor responders. Significant correlations were found between SIRT1 and SA1 (r = 0.69; P0.001), between SIRT1 and SA2 (r = 0.78; P0.001), and between SIRT1 and telomere length (r = 0.36; P0.001). However, in the older patient group (38 years), SIRT1 mRNA levels were twice as high as the levels recorded in the younger patient cohort (34 years). Western blot analysis and immunofluorescent studies confirmed the increments in SIRT1 protein levels in patients over 38 years old.N/A.Cumulus/oocyte complexes were retrieved by patients undergoing ovarian stimulation protocol for IVF. We cannot exclude the possibility that different stimulation protocols affect the correlations highlighted in this study. Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder affecting 5-10% of women of reproductive age. It generally shows with oligo/amenorrhea, anovulatory cycles, clinical o biochemical hirsutism, polycystic ovaries and, in a significant percentage of cases, insulin resistance. PCOS is defined as a multifactorial pathology, determined by the association of many factors: genetic, endocrine and environmental. The first and most effective treatment of PCOS is to change life-style and lose weight. The use of oral contraceptives has been shown effective in reducing acne and hirsutism and regulates the menstrual cycle. For women with severe hirsutism, the addition of antiandrogens to estrogen-progestin therapy has significantly improved the results. In cases of anovulatory infertility, the drug of first choice is clomiphene citrate, followed by low-dose gonadotropins. Recently, insulin-sensitizing drugs have been widely prescribed for PCOS patients. They are particularly effective in reducing insulin resistance and improving ovulatory performance. Besides insulin-sensitizing drugs, natural substances, such as inositol, seems to have good efficacy, similar to metformin with fewer side effects. New substances that could be used include statins and natural statins, such as monakolin, alone or combined with myo-inositol. These substances do not have side effects and greatly reduce the hyperandrogenic component in these patients.

Abstract: This work is a critical re-analysis of the results obtained by the AMADEUS collaboration, concerning the measurement of the K- multi-nucleon absorption reactions, on a 12C target, in the Λp final state (Del Grande et al 2019 Eur. Phys. J. C 79, 190). We show that a good estimate of the K- two-nucleon absorption total branching ratio can be extracted, given that the measured final state interactions and conversion reactions contain information on almost all the remaining hyperon-nucleon final state combinations. The main contribution to the total branching ratio of the K- two-nucleon absorption in Carbon is extracted from the measured ratios and is found to be (16.1 ± 2.9(stat.)+4.3-5.5 (syst.))%, which is in agreement with recent theoretical predictions. The missing contribution, from those few channels for which a Λp pair could not be detected in the final state of the interaction, is also estimated combining both the measured branching ratios and the available theoretical information, and amounts to (5.5 ± 0.1(stat.)+1.0-0.9(syst.))%. All together the total branching ratio of the K- two-nucleon absorption in Carbon is found to be (21.6 ± 2.9(stat.)+4.4-5.6}(syst.))%.

Abstract: Based on a sample of 300 million KS mesons produced in ϕ→KLKS decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE e+e− collider we have measured the branching fraction for the decay KS→πμν. The KS mesons are identified by the interaction of KL mesons in the detector. The KS→πμν decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and by a time-of-flight measurement. Signal efficiencies are evaluated with data control samples of KL→πμν decays. A fit to the reconstructed muon mass distribution finds 7223±180 signal events. Normalising to the KS→π+π− decay events the result for the branching fraction is B(KS→πμν)=(4.56±0.11stat±0.17syst)×10−4. It is the first measurement of this decay mode and the result allows an independent determination of |Vus| and a test of the lepton-flavour universality.

Abstract: In the last decade, the risk benefits ratio of MHT has been evaluated mainly in terms of cardiovascular risk. Present Consensus Statement is largely inspired by the Global Consensus on Menopausal Hormone Therapy in 2013 and 2016 by leading global menopause societies (The American Society for Reproductive Medicine, The Asia Pacific Menopause Federation, The Endocrine Society, The European Menopause and Andropause Society, The International Menopause Society, The International Osteoporosis Foundation and The North American Menopause Society). The aim of these Recommendations is to provide a simple and updated reference on postmenopausal MHT. The term MHT typically includes estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) and estrogen-progestogen therapy (EPT). EPT can be sequential (Seq) when progestogen is added to ERT for 10-14 days a month, or continuous combined (CC) when progestogen is administered continuously every day along with a fixed amount of estrogen. MHT also includes Tibolone and the Tissue Selective Estrogen Complex (TSEC).

Abstract: Inguino-scrotal herniation of the ureter is a rare and difficult situation for a surgeon, especially if only recognized during inguinal hernia repair. An 83-year-old gentleman, with a previous history of radiation treatment for squamous anal cancer, presented with a large left inguinoscrotal hernia causing occasional pain at the base of the scrotum. Follow-up, post-radiation therapy CT scan showed a hernia sac containing the bladder and large bowel. Calcifications in the sac were interpreted as bladder stones, in keeping with the history of left renal calculi. During hernia repair careful dissection revealed a herniated portion of the left ureter located alongside a large hernia sac, complicated by ureteral calculi. Following stones extraction and ureteral repair, hernia repair with mesh was successfully accomplished. Pathogenesis of ureteric herniation is reviewed. A herniated ureter is potentially a source of serious renal or ureteral complications. When discovered, ureteric hernias should be surgically repaired. If preoperative detection of a ureter herniation alongside an inguinal hernia is missed, awareness of the existence of this condition may help avoid iatrogenic ureteral damage injury during a complex hernioplasty. Documentation of unexplained, sizeable and distinct calcifications in an inguino-scrotal hernia sac, particularly in a patient with a history of urolithiasis, may suggest the presence of a herniated, calculus-filled ureter. In such cases, retrograde pyelograms may be considered for a definitive diagnosis prior to surgery.

35. Photo-electrochemical cell based on detergent-solubilized photosynthetic reaction centers

Abstract: The bacterial photosynthetic reaction center (RC)1 is a membrane spanning protein that, upon illumination, promotes the reduction of a quinone molecule withdrawing electrons from cytochrome c. This reaction has been often exploited in suitably designed photoelectrochemical cells, to generate photocurrents sustained by the reduction at the working electrode of the photo-oxidized electron donor or by the oxidation of the electron acceptor. A number of PECs employing the bacterial RC as photoactive component have been developed in the last decade 2. Much effort has been devoted to the optimization of protein/electrode electrical communication by suitable protein immobilization strategies 3. Several ways to interface RCs to electrodes have been described including immobilization by Layer-by-Layer and Langmuir-Blodgett techniques, by encapsulation in nanoporous and nanostructured materials, by entrapment in sol-gel media, and by employment of suitable electrode/protein linkers. Despite the huge amount of investigations driven in recent years on bio-photovoltaic devices based on immobilized RCs and relevant models describing their behaviour,4 the scientific literature is relatively poor of reports focused on photocurrent generation by means of photoactive proteins dissolved in the electrolyte solution.5 In this work we have explored in more detail the factors affecting the photocurrent generation in commercially available screen-printed electrochemical cells containing an electrolyte solution where RC proteins are solubilized. In particular, the role of the applied potential and the influence of concentration and structure of acceptor and donor molecules have been assessed. We show that efficient generation of cathodic photocurrents occurs at an applied potential of 0 V versus quasi-ref Ag (the open circuit voltage of the system in the dark) in presence of ferrocenemethanol and decylubiquinone, which proved to guarantee high performances as electron donor and acceptor respectively. Moreover, a set of differential equations, describing reaction and diffusion processes, has been employed for modelling with high accuracy the chronoamperometry profiles recorded at variables RC concentrations. This model allowed to estimate the kinetic parameters relevant to the chemical reactions triggered by light and to get a snapshot of the electrolyte composition in the different cell compartments (bulk and electrode surroundings) at different times from the light exposure. The characteristic time course of the photocurrent, showing a peak value followed by a slow decay, has been therefore explained as the result of the strict interconnection between the dynamical processes involved. This investigation represents a further contribution to the comprehension of factors that regulate light energy conversion in protein-based and bio-inspired photoelectrochemical devices. Abstract: In this study, exergetic, environmental and economic (3E) analyses have been performed in order to provide sustainability indicators from resource extraction to the final product of stationary power Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFC) systems (500 kW). Two environmental life cycle impact assessment methods have been selected: the ReCiPe 2016 hierarchical midpoint and endpoint, and the Cumulative Exergy Extraction from the Natural Environment (CEENE). The levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) under technology cost and performance parameters was calculated to analyze the system from the economic point of view. The global warming potential (GWP) is estimated to be 0.549 kg CO2-eq/kWh while acidification (5.06e−4 kg SO2-eq/kWh), eutrophication (9.81e−4 kg P-eq. freshwater/kWh), ozone layer depletion (4.11e−6 kg CFC-11-eq/kWh) and human toxicity (1.07 kg 1,4-DB-eq/kWh). Aggregated CEENE was estimated to be about 8.55 MJex/kWh. Results show that majority of impacts are dominated by fuel supply, while some others are dominated by manufacturing of system. GWP is the only impact category dominated by system operation. Due to potentially high electrical efficiency, MCFC energy systems can lead to lower CEENE and improvements of global warming, fossil fuel and resource scarcity, and photochemical oxidant formation potential with respect to other conventional energy conversion systems. Advances in longer lifetimes of the MCFC stack can help trigger innovation in manufacturing processes and will lead to less resource use of electricity, metal, and minerals, thus less resource scarcity and toxicity related burdens. The baseline LCOE is calculated 0.1265 €/kWh being comparable with the Italian grid (0.15–0.16 €/kWh). The costing results indicate that the unit decreasing the system capital cost could potentially reduce the LCOE by around 25%. Advancing the use of life-cycle thinking in MCFC industry with site-specific data raise systems credibility and enables clarifying the trade-offs between the sustainability pillars, thus designing more sustainable products. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract: We searched for the $\mu^+\mu^-$ decay of a light vector gauge boson, also known as dark photon, in the $e^+ e^- \to \mu^+ \mu^- \gamma_{\rm ISR}$ process by means of the Initial State Radiation (ISR) method. We used 1.93~fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the DA$\Phi$NE $\phi$-factory. No structures have been observed over the irreducible $\mu^+ \mu^-$ background. A 90\% CL limit on the ratio $\varepsilon^2=\alpha^{\prime}/\alpha$ between the dark coupling constant and the fine structure constant of $ 3\times 10^{-6}-2\times 10^{-7}$ has been set in the dark photon mass region between 519 MeV and 973 MeV. This new limit has been combined with the published result obtained investigating the hypothesis of the dark photon decaying into hadrons in $e^+ e^- \to \pi^+ \pi^- \gamma_{\rm ISR}$ events. The combined 90\% CL limit increases the sensitivity especially in the $\rho-\omega$ interference region and excludes $\varepsilon^2$ greater than $(13-2)\times 10^{-7}$. For dark photon masses greater than 600 MeV the combined limit is lower than 8~$\times\, 10^{-7}$ resulting more stringent than present constraints from other experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Abstract: This paper describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of RUDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity "particles factory", based on a combination of high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linacs and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. Abstract: Human follicular fluid (HFF) has been proven to contain biologically active molecules and proteins that may affect follicle growth and oocyte fertilization. Based on this concept, HFF proteomic characterization is having a significant impact in the delineation of a biomarkers' profile for oocyte quality estimation and, maybe, for in vitro fertilization (IVF) success improvement. Follicular fluid is characterized by a vast protein complexity and a broad dynamic range of protein abundances that hinder its analysis. In this study we determined a proper solubilization and resolution method of HFF in 2-DE, minimizing sample manipulation, protein loss, and experimental artifacts. According to our methodology some low-abundance proteins were detected and identified by MS. Identified proteins were then functionally cross-linked by a pathway analysis. The generated path highlighted the occurrence in HFF of a tight functional-network in which effectors and inhibitors control and balance a space- and time-dependent induction/inhibition of inflammation, coagulation, and ECM degradation/remodeling. Such fine modulation of enzymatic activities exerts a fundamental role in follicle development and in oocyte competence acquiring. Alpha-1-antitrypsin resulted in the core protein of the delineated net and we interestingly detected its differential incidence in FF and serum from two small cohorts of patients who underwent IVF. Biological significance Human ovarian follicular fluid (HFF) is the in vivo microenvironment for oocyte during folliculogenesis. It contains biologically active molecules that may affect oocyte quality, fertilization, and embryo development. HFF is also one of the most abundant “waste product” in assisted reproduction. This makes HFF a readily accessible source of biomolecules for competence evaluation of collected oocytes. The methodological improvement we obtained in proteomics characterization of HFF lead to a wide overview on the functional correlation existing between several fluid components and on how their aberrant occurrence/activity may affect oocyte quality and ovulation. Abstract: We have carried out a new direct search for the CP violating decay K-S -> 3 pi(0) with 1.7 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) collisions collected by the KLOE detector at the Phi-factory DA Phi NE. We have searched for this decay in a sample of about 5.9 x 10(8) KSKL events tagging the K-S by means of the K-L interaction in the calorimeter and requiring six prompt photons. With respect to our previous search, the analysis has been improved by increasing of a factor four the tagged sample and by a more effective background rejection of fake K-S tags and spurious clusters. We find no candidates in data and simulated background samples, while we expect 0.12 standard model events. Normalizing to the number of K-S -> 2 pi(0) events in the same sample, we set the upper limit on BR(K-S -> 3 pi(0))

Abstract: We have measured the ratio cr (e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma)/sigma(e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)gamma), with the KLOE detector at DA Phi NE for a total integrated luminosity of similar to 240 pb(-1). From this ratio we obtain the cross section sigma (e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma). From the cross section we determine the pion form factor vertical bar F-pi vertical bar(2) and the two-pion contribution to the muon anomaly a(mu) for 0.592< M-pi pi < 0.975 GeV, Delta(pi pi) a(mu) = (385.1 +/- 1.1(stat) +/- 2.7(sys+theo)) x 10(-10). This result confirms the current discrepancy between the Standard Model calculation and the experimental measurement of the muon anomaly. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The new BGO-OD experiment at the electron accelerator ELSA, of the University of Bonn, is designed to study the reaction dynamics of nucleon excitations in meson photoproduction. It consists of a central BGO calorimeter with a magnetic spectrometer in forward direction. The physics programme includes the measurement of polarisation observables using linearly and circularly polarised photon beams. Linear polarisation is obtained by coherent bremsstrahlung off a diamond crystal, and circular polarisation is obtained via bremsstrahlung from longitudinally polarised electrons. The degree of linear polarisation is determined from the bremsstrahlung spectrum itself. To determine the polarisation of the circularly polarised photon beam, the polarisation of the electron beam is measured by a Moller polarimeter. As a preliminary consistency check, the (linear) polarisation observable, Σ, was compared to world data for π^0 and η photoproduction. To determine the degree of circular polarisation, a Moller polarimeter was setup and first measurements of the electron beam polarisation performed.

Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder affecting 5–10 % of women of reproductive age. It generally manifests with oligo/anovulatory cycles, hirsutism and polycystic ovaries, together with a considerable prevalence of insulin resistance. Although the aetiology of the syndrome is not completely understood yet, PCOS is considered a multifactorial disorder with various genetic, endocrine and environmental abnormalities. Moreover, PCOS patients have a higher risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases and their related morbidity, if compared to the general population.

Abstract: We present a custom integrated circuit, named SYNC, which plays a fundamental role in the time alignment of the LHCb Muon Detector and consequently in the trigger performance. The SYNC is realized in IBM 0.25 μm technology, using radiation-hardening layout techniques. SYNC receives data from the muon detector front-end electronics synchronizing them with the 40.08 MHz LHC clock. The data are tagged with the correct Bunch-Crossing identifier, output to the trigger system and stored in internal memories. The chip integrates 8 time to digital converters with a resolution up to 1 ns to measure the time phase of the input signals with respect to the system clock period. A histogram block can build real time spectra from the TDCs output. A I2C interface is implemented to configure and control the device, while a JTAG interface is integrated for boundary-scan purpose. We describe the circuit architecture, its internal blocks and its main modes of operation. Measurements performed on final prototypes are also reported.
