Abstract

Neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process that offers the only known means of asserting the possible Majorana nature of neutrino mass. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for 0νββ decay of 130Te using an array of 988 TeO2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK. The detector will contain 206 kg of 130Te and have an average energy resolution of 5 keV; the projected 0νββ decay half-life sensitivity after five years of livetime is 1.6 × 1026 y at 1σ (9.5 × 1025 y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40–100 meV (50–130 meV). In this paper, we review the experimental techniques used in CUORE as well as its current status and anticipated physics reach.

Abstract

The main issues in the design and optimization of a chemical process under uncertainty are the feasibility test, flexibility index and the two-step optimization problem. The formulations of these problems are based on the implicit supposition that at the operation stage it is possible to correct all uncertain parameters in the chemical process models. However, in practice, one can improve the accuracy of only some of the uncertain parameters. As a result, we consider two groups of uncertain parameters. We postulate that one can significantly improve the accuracy of the first group of uncertain parameters using process data at the operation stage. This necessitates the formulation of a new feasibility test and the associated two-stage optimization problem. We consider the general case when both groups of uncertain parameters may or may not be statistically dependent. We propose methods of solving the problems based on the supposition that the parametric uncertainty region is small. Under this condition, the process models are well represented by linearized models whose accuracy is asymptotically equal to that of the original process models. This leads to substantial computational savings. Computational tests show that when it is not possible to improve the accuracy of some of the uncertain parameters, using standard flexibility analysis can lead to processes that are not flexible.

Abstract

Optical fibers are used in a considerable number of applications ranging from ocean and terrestrial cables to remote sensors and to light guides in medical and other applications. They have also found wide usage in the information and communications industry. Because of the increased demand on bandwidth for transmitting large volumes of information faster, cheaper, and more reliably, manufacturing high-quality optical fibers that will guarantee reliability in performance at high production levels deserves much attention. In the manufacturing process, high fiber draw rates often result in inferior quality fiber with poor mechanical properties. On the other hand, low draw speeds lead to superior quality fiber with better mechanical properties at the expense of decreased rate of production. The realization of good quality fiber without unduly compromising the production throughput is accomplished through the solution of an optimization model. Naturally, since there are significant uncertainties in process and model parameters, there is a need to account for them in the optimization model. Accounting for uncertainty in chemical process design has been an area of active research in the past few years. Most engineering processes and designs are based on models having parameters which take on nominal values. However, in real time, processes fluctuations abound. These variabilities arise because of varying process conditions (e.g., temperature instabilities) and inaccuracies in the experimental determination of model parameters (e.g., energy of activation, diffusion constants, and viscosity parameters). Hence, for a process to remain feasible (all process constraints are satisfied) at the operation stage, it is imperative that the effects of uncertainties are accounted for at the design stage. Abstract

Inherent in chemical process models are parameters that have uncertainty associated with them. This paper addresses multicriteria optimization that accounts for model and process uncertainty at the design stage. Specifically the authors have developed extensions of the average criterion method, the worst-case strategy and the e -constraint method under the following conditions: (a) at the design stage the only information available about the uncertain parameters is that they are bounded by a known uncertainty region T , and (b) at the operation stage, process data is rich enough to allow the determination of exact values of all the uncertain parameters. The suggested formulation assumes that at the operation stage, certain process variables (called control variables) can be tuned or manipulated in order to offset the effects of uncertainty. Three illustrative examples (two benchmark and one direct methanol fuel cell) have been employed.

Process uncertainty is almost always an issue during the design of chemical processes (CP). In the open literature it has been shown that consideration of process uncertainties in optimal design necessitates the incorporation of process flexibility. Such an optimal design can presumably operate reliably in the presence of process and modeling uncertainty. Halemane and Grossmann (1983) introduced a feasibility function for evaluating CP flexibility. They also formulated a two-stage optimization problem for estimating the optimal design margins. These formulations, however, are based implicitly on the assumption that during the operation stage, uncertain parameters can be determined with enough precision. This assumption is rather restrictive and is often not met in practice. Abstract

Flexibility analysis is of prime importance in chemical process systems, since it permits the creation of chemical processes, which can satisfy all design specifications in spite of changes in internal and external factors during the operation stage. The modern foundations of flexibility analysis were developed in the 1980s by Grossman and coworkers. They formulated solution approaches for the main problems of flexibility analysis (feasibility test), flexibility index, and the two-stage optimization problem. All the formulations are based on the supposition that during the operation stage there are enough experimental data to accurately determine uncertain parameter values, but in practice, these assumptions are not likely to be met. This article discusses extensions of the feasibility test and the two-stage optimization problem (TSOP), which take into account the possibility of accurately estimating some of the uncertain parameters while estimating with less accuracy the remaining uncertain parameters. To solve the TSOP, the split and bound approach was developed based on a partitioning of the uncertainty region and estimation of bounds on the performance objective function. Three computational experiments show the importance of taking into account the possibility (or lack thereof) of obtaining values of greater accuracy for uncertain parameters at the operation stage.

Abstract

A review of some research on the long-term stability of platinum and carbon thermometers under the working conditions of superconducting magnets for accelerators, as a function of magnetic fields, irradiation, cyclical cooling and heating, and vibration, is conducted. Results with TVO carbon-ceramic thermometers are presented for an 18-year period. The technology for training and selecting stable thermometers that are capable of ensuring precise measurements of temperature in the 1.6-350 K range during 10-15 years in the harsh working conditions of accelerator and other installations is offered. Some recommendations for reducing the influence of the thermometer production process, thermometer mounting, and places of attachment on the accuracy of cryogenic thermometers are given.

Proposal of abstract for MT16, Tallahesse, Florida, 26th September to 2nd October 1999.A large Dipole Magnet is required for the Muon Arm Spectrometer of the ALICE experiment at the LHC.The absence of strong requirements on the symmetry and homogeneity of the magnetic field has lead to a design dominated by economic and feasibility considerations.In March 1997 the decision was taken to build a resistive dipole magnet for the muon spectrometer of the ALICE experiment. Since then, design work has been pursued in JINR/Russia and at CERN. While a common concept has been adopted for the construction of the steel core, two different proposals have been made for the manufacturing technology of the excitation coils. In both cases, however, the conductor material will be Aluminium.The general concept of the dipole magnet is based on a window frame return yoke, fabricated from low carbon steel sheets. The flat vertical poles follow the defined acceptance angle of 9 degrees. The excitation coils are of saddle type. The coils are wound from large hollow Aluminium profiles. They are cooled by pressurized demineralised water. The coil ends are located to both sides of the magnet yoke and determine the overall length of the magnet. The main flux direction in the gap is horizontal and perpendicular to the LHC beam axis.Both coil concepts and the underlying manufacturing technology are compared and the present status of the development of the magnet is described.

This paper discusses chemical process models for which the only uncertainties of interest are model parameters. In an earlier paper the authors addressed multicriteria optimization in the presence of model and process uncertainty at the design stage. Specifically the authors discussed extensions of the average criterion method, the worst-case strategy and the e -constraint method under the following conditions: (a) at the design stage the only information available about the uncertain parameters is that they are enclosed in a known uncertainty region T , and (b) at the operation stage, process data is rich enough to allow the determination of exact values of all the uncertain parameters. The suggested formulation assumed that at the operation stage, certain process variables (called control variables) could be tuned or manipulated in order to offset the effects of uncertainty. This formulation made the conventional assumption that there was only one type of uncertain parameters. In this paper, the authors consider the more realistic case, where the uncertain parameters fall under at least two classes at the operation stage, namely (a) those that can be determined with enough accuracy and (b) those that cannot be determined with such accuracy given the available process data. The case study is an application to a direct methanol fuel cell.

Abstract

The CUORE detector will be made of 988 TeO2 crystals and will need a base temperature lower than 10 mK in order to meet the performance specifications. To cool the CUORE detector a large cryogen-free cryostat with five pulse tubes and one specially designed high-power dilution refrigerator has been designed. The detector assembly has a total mass of about 1.5 ton and uses a vibration decoupling suspension system. Because of the stringent requirements regarding radioactivity, about 12 tons of lead shielding need to be cooled to 4 K and below, and only a limited number of construction materials are acceptable. The eight retractable radioactive sources for detector calibration and about 2600 signal wires add further complexity to the system. The many stringent and contrasting requirements together with the overall large size made the design of the CUORE cryogenic system a real mechanical and cryogenic engineering challenge. The cryogenic system is expected to be fully operational in the Gran Sasso Laboratory in July 2013. We report here about the current status of the cryogenic system construction, which has started about one year.

Abstract

We discuss methods for solving steady state process optimization problems under parametric uncertainty. The problem is formulated as a two-stage optimization problem (TSOP) which is inherently multiextremal and nondifferentiable. An indirect approach (split and bound method, SB) has been developed to address the nondifferentiability issue. The SB method iteratively solves for lower and upper bounds of the TSOP objective function, such that in the limit these bounds sandwich the optimal solution to within a given tolerance, thus avoiding the explicit solution of the nondifferentiable TSOP. We have introduced a linearization approach, which can lead to significant computational savings. Heuristics are proposed for partitioning and selection of critical points for the lower bound problem. We illustrate the proposed approach with one computational experiment

Abstract

CUORE-0 is an experiment built to test and demonstrate the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment. Com- posed of 52 TeO2 bolometers of 750g each, it is expected to reach a sensitivity to the 0νββ half-life of 130Te around 3 · 1024 y in one year of live time. We present the first data, corresponding to an exposure of 7.1kg y. An analysis of the background indicates that the CUORE sensitivity goal is within reach, validating our techniques to reduce the α radioactivity of the detector.

Abstract

CUORE-0 is a cryogenic detector that uses an array of tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of ^{130}Te. We present the first data analysis with 7.1 kg y of total TeO_2 exposure focusing on background measurements and energy resolution. The background rates in the neutrinoless double-beta decay region of interest (2.47 to 2.57 MeV) and in the {\alpha} background-dominated region (2.70 to 3.90 MeV) have been measured to be 0.071 \pm 0.011 and 0.019 \pm 0.002 counts/keV/kg/y, respectively. The latter result represents a factor of 6 improvement from a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. The results verify our understanding of the background sources in CUORE-0, which is the basis of extrapolations to the full CUORE detector. The obtained energy resolution (full width at half maximum) in the region of interest is 5.7 keV. Based on the measured background rate and energy resolution in the region of interest, CUORE-0 half-life sensitivity is expected to surpass the observed lower bound of Cuoricino with one year of live time., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, version 2 as published in Eur. Abstract

The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay in {Mathematical expression}Te. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles as well as provide information about the absolute neutrino mass scale and mass hierarchy.The CUORE setup will consist of an array of 988 tellurium dioxide crystals (containing 206 kg of {Mathematical expression}Te in total), operated as bolometers at a temperature of {Mathematical expression}10 mK. The experiment is now under construction at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. As a first step towards CUORE, a tower (CUORE-0) has been assembled and is taking data. Here a detailed description of the CUORE-0 tower and its performance is reported. The status of the CUORE experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Abstract

Neutrinoless double beta decay (0nubb) is one of the most sensitive probes for physics beyond the Standard Model, providing unique information on the nature of neutrinos. In this paper we review the status and outlook for bolometric 0nubb decay searches. We summarize recent advances in background suppression demonstrated using bolometers with simultaneous readout of heat and light signals. We simulate several configurations of a future CUORE-like bolometer array which would utilize these improvements and present the sensitivity reach of a hypothetical next-generation bolometric 0nubb experiment. We demonstrate that a bolometric experiment with the isotope mass of about 1 ton is capable of reaching the sensitivity to the effective Majorana neutrino mass (|mee|) of order 10-20 meV, thus completely exploring the so-called inverted neutrino mass hierarchy region. Abstract

We report the results of a search for axions from the 14.4 keV M1 transition from Fe-57 in the core of the sun using the axio-electric effect in TeO2 bolometers. The detectors are 5x5x5 cm3 crystals operated at about 10 mK in a facility used to test bolometers for the CUORE experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. An analysis of 43.65 kg d of data was made using a newly developed low energy trigger which was optimized to reduce the detectors energy threshold. An upper limit of 0.63 c kg-1 d-1 was established at 95% C.L.. From this value, a lower bound at 95% C.L. was placed on the Peccei-Quinn energy scale of fa >= 0.76 10**6 GeV for a value of S=0.55 for the flavor-singlet axial vector matrix element. We collected 19.4 days of data from four 750 g TeO2 bolometers, and in three of them we were able to set the energy threshold around 3 keV using a new analysis technique. We found a background rate ranging from 25 cpd/keV/kg at 3 keV to 2 cpd/keV/kg at 25 keV, and a peak at 4.7 keV. The origin of this peak is presently unknown, but its presence is confirmed by a reanalysis of 62.7 kg.days of data from the finished CUORICINO experiment. Finally, we report the expected sensitivities of the CUORE0 (52 bolometers) and CUORE (988 bolometers) experiments to a WIMP annual modulation signal., 9 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

In this article we describe the background challenges for the CUORE experiment posed by surface contamination of inert detector materials such as copper, and present three techniques explored to mitigate these backgrounds. Using data from a dedicated test apparatus constructed to validate and compare these techniques we demonstrate that copper surface contamination levels better than 10E-07 - 10E-08 Bq/cm2 are achieved for 238U and 232Th. If these levels are reproduced in the final CUORE apparatus the projected 90% C.L. upper limit on the number of background counts in the region of interest is 0.02-0.03 counts/keV/kg/y depending on the adopted mitigation technique., 10 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

The CUORE experiment, a ton-scale cryogenic bolometer array, recently began operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The array represents a significant advancement in this technology, and in this work we apply it for the first time to a high-sensitivity search for a lepton-number-violating process: ^{130}Te neutrinoless double-beta decay. Examining a total TeO&#95;{2} exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of (7.7±0.5)  keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of (0.014±0.002)  counts/(keV kg yr), we find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Including systematic uncertainties, we place a lower limit on the decay half-life of T&#95;{1/2}^{0ν}(^{130}Te)>1.3×10^{25}  yr (90% C.L.); the median statistical sensitivity of this search is 7.0×10^{24}  yr. Combining this result with those of two earlier experiments, Cuoricino and CUORE-0, we find T&#95;{1/2}^{0ν}(^{130}Te)>1.5×10^{25}  yr (90% C.L.), which is the most stringent limit to date on this decay. Interpreting this result as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, we find m&#95;{ββ}<(110-520)  meV, where the range reflects the nuclear matrix element estimates employed.
