Abstract

Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract

The fusion reaction between deuterium and tritium, D ( T,n ) ^4 He is the main source of energy in future thermonuclear reactors. Alpha-particles ( ^4 He -ions) born with an average energy of 3.5 MeV transferring energy to the thermal plasma during their slowing down, should provide the self-sustained D–T plasma burn. The adequate confinement of α -particles is essential to provide efficient heating of the bulk plasma and steady burning of a reactor plasma. That is why the fusion-born α -particle studies have been a priority task in the second D–T experiments (DTE2) on the Joint European Torus (JET) to understand the main mechanisms of their slowing down, redistribution and losses and to develop optimal plasma scenarios. JET with Be -wall and W -divertor, enhanced auxiliary heating systems and improved energetic-particle diagnostic capabilities, producing significant population of α -particles, provided the possibility for comprehensive studying of the α -particle behaviour. Selected results of the confined and lost α -particle measurements, evidence of α -particle self-heating and assessments of the fusion performance are presented in this paper giving an opportunity for further modelling and extrapolation to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor and burning plasma reactors.

Abstract

Burning reactor plasmas will be self-heated by fusion born alpha particles from deuterium-tritium reactions. Consequently, a thorough understanding of the confinement and transport of DT-born alpha particles is necessary to maintain the plasma self-heating. Measurements of fast ion losses provide a direct means to monitor alpha particle confinement. JET’s 2021–2022 second experimental DT-campaign offers burning plasma scenarios with advanced fast ion loss diagnostics for the first time in nearly 25 years. Coherent and non-coherent alpha losses were observed due to a variety of low frequency MHD activity. This manuscript will present the loss mechanisms, spatial and pitch dependencies, scalings with plasma parameters, correlations with wall impurities, and magnitude of DT-alpha born losses.

Abstract

В контексті формування основних напрямків екологічного дизайну розглянуті основні напрямки створення знакових інформаційних систем методами екологічного дизайну. Показано, що методи дизайну формують користувацькі потреби і впливають на екологічну поведінку населення. Створення ефективної методики формування знакових інформаційних систем сприятиме, таким чином, підвищенню ролі екологічного дизайну як ефективної складової впливу на користувацьку парадигму. Розглянуто основні принципи «екологічного маркування» у взаємодії з «екологічною декларацією», що утворюють зв’язок між виробником і користувачем з метою стимулювання виробництва високоякісної, органічної і екологічно сталої продукції. Викладені основні принципи проектування знакових систем, що здатні суттєво підвищити їх дієвість, в першу чергу для завдань екологічного маркування.

Abstract

Екологічний дизайн розглядається в контексті вирішення проблеми взаємодії людини і природи як один з основних напрямків світового екологічного руху зі збереження і відновлення навколишнього простору, органічного включення створюваних людиною технологій у структуру середовища життєдіяльності людини. У статті доводиться, що в сучасному екологічному дизайні на основі принципів 3R-проектування поєднуються показники екологічної якості, які є провідними у новій проектній культурі. Авторами досліджується формування термінологічного апарату екологічного дизайну; змістовна послідовність оцінювання життєвого циклу виробів (LCA) відповідно до стратегії розвитку екодизайну; специфіка міжнародного екологічного співробітництва; доводиться, що дизайн і ергодизайн, які враховують екологічні аспекти життєдіяльності людини, є об’єднуючим фактором між людиною (її потребами), культурою і екологією.

7. Efficiency of Hardware and Software Systems in the Assessment of Psychophysiological State of Persons in Extreme Conditions Professions

Abstract

Aim. To determine the effectiveness of hardware and software complexes in assessing the psychophysiological state of persons in extreme conditions professions. Material and methods. The post-hoc comparative analysis of sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy of five hardware and software complexes was performed involving 459 patients of different medical and preventive care institutions that received the rehabilitation medical care. The simulation of altered reactivity in 6 athletes of cyclic kinds of sport was carried out within a daily experiment (5 men, mean age 21.1±0.7 years and one woman, 22 years; sport rank not lower than 1 senior degree). Psychophysiological testing was conducted at five time points using the following methods: hardware and software complex “Diamed-MBS”, ASD (Radix), Lusher colorchoice test (Radix), reaction to a moving object (Multipsychometer), static and dynamic tremorometry (Multipsychometer). Results and discussion. The diagnostic effectiveness of these psychophysiological examination data automated processing complexes were determined by their informative value, the ability to recognize signs of the disease with a so-called reference or benchmark diagnosis. The highest indicators of sensitivity (82.5%), specificity (79.3%) and overall accuracy (80.6%) were found in the Diamed-MBS hardware and software complex. A tendency to decrease in the main indicators, such as heart rate, stress index, activity, well-being, working capacity with a minimum at 3:00-5:00 hours, was revealed. During the day, the possibility of the athletes’ psycho-emotionalstate dynamic assessment during the day (somatic and psychological components) was evaluated according to the parameters of heart rate variability, electrosomatography and bioelectrography. The dynamics of psychological and psychophysiological diagnostics indicators was of the multidirectional nature, which does not allow us to assert unequivocally about the negative impact of daily rhythms on the condition of athletes. All athletes showed negative results in one way or another at different intermediate diagnostic points, but by the end of the study they managed to compensate and reach the results of the primary diagnosis. Conclusion. The diagnostic efficiency of complex screening diagnostics when using hardware and software complex “Diamed-MBS” is 80.6%, which is 25-35% higher than the same parameter for similar devices. No negative psychological and psychophysiological effects of stress stimulation on daily rhythms of athletes were defined.

Abstract

Aim. To determine the effectiveness of the specific loading testing use in assessing the athletes’ physical performance. Material and methods. We present a post-hoc analysis of data from specific and nonspecific loading testing (bicycle ergometer, treadmill, rowing ergometer, and ski treadmill) of 23 oarsmen athletes (13 male (mean age 25.85±0.88 years) and 10 female (mean age 22.90±1.20 years); 125 track and field athletes (75 male athletes (mean age 24.74±0.91) and 50 female athletes (mean age 23.81±1.35)), 38 ski athletes (22 male athletes (mean age 21.3±2.4) and 16 female athletes (mean age 19.6±1.8)). Results and discussion. When assessing the physical performance of track and field athletes of various positions using a bicycle ergometer and a treadmill, the maximum oxygen consumption (MOC) parameter for throwers and jumpers was in the range of 29-55 ml/min/kg (it is more appropriate to use a statoergometer), for runners – 39-75 ml/min/kg (testing on a treadmill is preferable). The greatest efficiency and physiological validity was obtained by load testing using a rowing ergometer for rowing athletes and a ski roller treadmill for athletes of ski sports (the ratio of heart rate at the anaerobic metabolism threshold level to the heart rate “on failure” is ~ 97%). With bicycle ergometry, low values of MOC were obtained in athletes training for endurance, and, including on the treadmill, in athletes with the main strength load and implies the work of the muscles of the upper shoulder girdle and back. The functional and reserve capabilities of the athlete are not reflected in the data obtained that makes impossible to judge the level of his/her functional readiness. Conclusion. Sports medicine technologies reflecting the dynamic characteristics of athletes’ physical performance should be evaluated from the point of view of informativeness and efficiency of their application depending on the type of sport. Conclusion about the effectiveness of sports medicine technologies should be made considering the results of the functional and physical performance testing under the exertion, specific to a particular sport.

Abstract

An urgent task today is the formation of scientific approaches to the creation of a system to assess the effectiveness of medical technologies in sports medicine, taking into account the increased requirements not only in assessing their safety, but also with the mandatory analysis of their impact on the parameters of functional readiness of the athlete. We conducted the study using a comprehensive methodological approach developed in terms of the possibility of its application in case of mono-factorial exposure (means of pharmacological support). Aim. To determine the effectiveness of pharmacological agent’s complexes indicated for use in the prevention of fatigue by their effect on physical performance and psycho-emotional state of persons professionally engaged in sports. Material and methods. We performed a retrospective analysis of 30 athletes involved in skiing sports (biathlon, cross-country skiing and cross-country skiing) and evaluated the efficacy of two combinations of pharmacological agents not included in the WADA banned list, indicated for the prevention of fatigue, compared with placebo. Functional state of the athletes was estimated on the 7th and 15th days according to the parameters of endurance testing on the “Norwegian” protocol “until failure”, 5 loading steps, psychoemotional state (hardware-software complex “Diamed-MBS”, psychological status (Lusher test, WAM, Mini-Mult) on the 7th and 15th days. We analyzed the dynamics of general and biochemical blood tests, general urinalysis. Results and discussion. Load time before failure, the main indicator characterizing the success of the athlete’s professional activity, did not differ in all three groups when testing the background values, on the 7th and 15th days of the study, but consistently increased from the beginning to the end of the experiment. Abstract

Relevance. In the context of the ongoing pandemic of new coronavirus infection, the development and implementation of new methods for medical (pulmonary) rehabilitation of patients is an urgent scientific and practical task. Intention. To assess the effectiveness and substantiate the possibility of using a new physiotherapeutic technology based on bioacoustic stimulation of the respiratory system with high-intensity low-frequency sounds in the comprehensive medical rehabilitation of patients with coronavirus pneumonia. Methodology. A randomized controlled open parallel clinical trial of 28 patients was conducted to assess effectiveness of medical rehabilitation after coronavirus pneumonia. Results and Discussion. Changes in external respiration indicators, psychological status and severity of post-traumatic stress disorders statistically significantly differed in the intervention and control groups before and after the course of rehabilitation. Therefore, bioacoustic stimulation of the respiratory system as part of comprehensive medical rehabilitation program after coronavirus pneumonia significantly increases its effectiveness. Conclusion. Bioacoustic stimulation of the respiratory system with high-intensity low-frequency sounds can be recommended as an effective physical method for inclusion in the comprehensive medical rehabilitation program for patients recovered from coronavirus pneumonia.

Abstract

Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) driven by energetic alpha particles can lead to enhanced fast ion transport and losses, thereby degrading the plasma performance in ITER and future magnetic confinement fusion reactors. Unexpectedly, AEs with negative toroidal mode numbers, which are currently not considered for ITER, were observed in dedicated experiments with fusion-born alpha particles on the tokamak Joint European Torus (JET). The paper provides evidence for a complex interplay between fast ions, monster sawtooth crashes and AEs. Our results highlight the need for an improved description of the synergies between different fast ion phenomena in future burning plasmas.

Abstract

An integrated energetic particle transport model has been constructed in JET plasmas constrained by experimental fast ion loss measurements. The model incorporates a synthetic fast ion loss detector identical to JET’s thin-foil Faraday cup fast ion loss detector array. The loss model combines analyses from the TRANSP and ORBIT-kick codes with enhanced features for producing the synthetic diagnostic. Extensions to the ORBIT code framework allow a full-orbit representation within the vacuum region that can map particles directly to an installed detector geometry. Since synthetic fast ion loss detectors are plagued by weak loss statistics, a novel reverse integration biasing scheme has been implemented to boost computational efficiency. The model is validated against experimental loss measurements induced by long-lived kink modes and is found to be in good agreement. This confirms the development of a fully integrated transport/loss model which can be quantitatively verified against experiment allowing for future validation and predictive studies. The model is particularly useful for more complicated plasma scenarios that involve multiple fast ion species such as JET’s 2021 DT-campaign.

Abstract

The relativistic magnetron is one of the most efficient high power microwave (HPM) sources but pulse shortening, the result of explosive cathode plasma's radial expansion toward the anode, makes it impractical because the HPM pulse terminates much earlier than the applied voltage. We present experimental results of the operation of a relativistic magnetron fed by a split cathode. A split cathode [Leopold et al., Phys. Plasmas 27, 103102 (2020)] consists of a cathode placed upstream and outside the anode, connected by an axial rod to a reflector (a transverse conducting circular plate) placed downstream from the anode. The electron charge, emitted by an annular explosive cathode emitter, accumulates in the space between the cathode and the reflector and at the same time, screens the rod from explosive plasma formation. This accumulated space charge serves as the electron source for the magnetron. The explosive plasma developing on the emitter remains outside the magnetron and does not propagate into the anode while it operates. We compare the performance of the magnetron operating with a standard explosive emitting solid carbon cathode to that with a split cathode. The experiments demonstrate that whereas for the solid cathode, the microwave pulse developing in the magnetron suffers from pulse shortening, with a split cathode, the pulse survives as long as the amplitude of the applied voltage is sufficient for the magnetron's operation. We support the experiment by particle-in-cell simulations.

Abstract

A study of the sea atmosphere influence on the corrosion products of steel constructions near Sochi at difference distances from the sea has been made. The phases and compositions of the corrosion products formed on different sides of steel construction elements were examined by using Mossbauer spectroscopy (at 298 and 78 K). The results show that phases and composition distributions in oxide films are different on different parts of the constructions. The differences depend not only on the distance from the sea, but from their relative orientation to the sea also. The phase structure of the oxide films on different positions is identified.

Abstract

It has been shown that 4% carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air above reaction mixture inhibits the initiation of the formation of silver nanoparticles from complexes with biogenic amines (noradrenaline and serotonin). At the same concentration of CO2 in the air above solution of AgNO3, which is used for staining nerve tissues by the method of Golgi, neurons are preferentially stained, whereas at a concentration of 0.06%, vessels are stained. It is suggested that the entry of free silver ions to neurons is due to the inhibition of sites of initiation of silver nanoparticles in vessels at high CO2 concentrations, while the lack of inhibition leads to silver precipitation in vessels at low CO2 concentrations. It can be assumed that, for stable silver impregnation, the concentration of CO2 must be controlled.

Abstract

Structural changes in the sensorimotor cortex of the cerebral hemispheres were studied in rats with experimental hemorrhagic stroke in the internal capsule. Changes in the shape and decrease in the density distribution of spines on apical dendrites of layer V pyramidal neurons of the sensorimotor cortex were revealed. Some fractions isolated from the complex of neurotrophic factors of the cerebral cortex of animals with a favorable outcome of hemorrhagic stroke were shown to affect the distal and proximal dendritic loci. As differentiated from the "nonactive" fraction, the "active" fraction improved the behavior of rats surviving hemorrhagic stroke. The density distribution of spines (particularly in the distal region of apical dendrites of pyramidal neurons in layer V of the cerebral cortex) was stabilized after treatment with the "active" fraction. The "nonactive" fraction had a selective effect on the proximal loci.

Abstract

Local cerebrovascular disorders were modeled by reversible photochemical clotting of hemispheric cortical vessels. Mild ischemia led to reversible edema in the surface layers of the cortex: cytotoxic edema of the neuropile, primarily of the distal dendrites. This status led to an increase in the lower delta rhythm frequency band power. After administration of systemic anesthetic, delta rhythm appeared sooner in the ischemic foci than in intact cortical areas. More severe ischemia led to the appearance of dark and pyknotic neurons and reduction of oscillation power in all EEG spectrum bands. Restructuring of primarily dendrites caused by local moderate ischemia of the surface cortical layers at the early stage of neurodegenerative processes stimulated the inhibitory recovery processes.

Abstract

An effect due to fusion born triton production has been observed in JET high-performance deuterium plasma discharges with neutral beam injection (NBI) and H-minority ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) heating, using DD and deuterium tritium (DT) neutron spectrometry as well as fusion product loss measurements. The observations show that a decrease of the second harmonic ω  =  2ωcD enhancement of the DD neutron rate correlates with an increase of the triton burnup rate. An acceleration of tritons due to absorbing ICRH power at the third harmonic ω  =  3ωcT has been observed. This effect could indicate a redistribution of ICRH power absorption at ω  ≈  ωcH  =  2ωcD  =  3ωcT with increasing triton concentration at the ion cyclotron resonance layer. Also, the reduction of the second harmonic enhancement of the DD neutron rate can be caused by burning of the accelerated deuterium as the tritium concentration grows. This is an extremely non-linear process as both mechanisms intensify with triton concentration. It determines the necessity to consider the ICRH power absorption ω  =  3ωcT in modelling of high-performance deuterium discharges with simultaneous NBI and H-minority ICRF heating as well as the assessment of enhanced burnup of ICRF accelerated deuterium for the development of high-performance plasma scenarios and DT fusion rate predictions. Abstract

The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (a) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER. 27. Escaping alpha-particle monitor for burning plasmas.

Abstract

This paper presents a diagnostic system, gamma-ray alpha-particle monitor (GRAM), for continuous monitoring of deuterium–tritium fusion α-particles in the MeV energy range escaped from the plasma to the first wall. The diagnostic is based on the detection of γ-rays produced in nuclear reactions. The reactions 9Be(α,nγ)12C and 10B(α,pγ)13C have been selected. For that purpose, Be- or 10B-target is placed on the first wall, where the alphas are expected to be mostly lost. Striking the target, the lost alphas generate specific γ-rays, if their energy Eα  >  1.5 MeV. To measure this γ-ray emission, the target should be in the field of view of a collimated detector, which is protected from neutrons and background gammas. The calibrated detector could deliver absolute values of the lost α-particle flux with a temporal resolution depending on intensity of losses. A high-performance γ-ray spectrometer with a novel architecture, GRITER, is proposed to be used in GRAM. It consists of a stack of the optically isolated high-Z fast scintillators with independent signal readout. GRITER is supposed to be operated at count-rates substantially exceeding the capability of a single crystal detector of the same size. The GRAM diagnostic system consists of two identical spectrometers, which measure both γ-rays due to α-particle loss and γ-ray background ensuring reliable data in a harsh reactor environment. GRAM could be tested during the non-DT plasma operation monitoring lost DD fusion products, neutral beam heating D-ions (ED  >  0.5 MeV) and ICRF accelerated H- and 3He-ions through the detection of γ-rays resulting from nuclear reactions. Abstract

The intensity of 9Be  +  p nuclear fusion reactions was experimentally studied during second harmonic (2ωCH) ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) and further analyzed during fundamental hydrogen minority ICRH of JET-ILW hydrogen and deuterium plasmas. In relatively low-density plasmas with a high ICRH power, a population of fast H+ ions was created and measured by neutral particle analyzers. Primary and secondary nuclear reaction products, due to 9Be  +  p interaction, were observed with fast ion loss detectors, γ-ray spectrometers and neutron flux monitors and spectrometers. The possibility of using 9Be(p, d)2α and 9Be(p, α)6Li nuclear reactions to create a population of fast alpha particles and study their behaviour in non-active stage of ITER operation is discussed in the paper. Abstract

During development of a high-performance hybrid scenario for future deuterium–tritium experiments on the Joint European Torus, an increased level of fast ion losses in the MeV energy range was observed during the instability of high-frequency n  =  1 fishbones. The fishbones are excited during deuterium neutral beam injection combined with ion cyclotron heating. The frequency range of the fishbones, 10–25 kHz, indicates that they are driven by a resonant interaction with the NBI-produced deuterium beam ions in the energy range  ⩽120 keV. The fast particle losses in a much higher energy range are measured with a fast ion loss detector, and the data show an expulsion of deuterium plasma fusion products, 1 MeV tritons and 3 MeV protons, during the fishbone bursts. An MHD mode analysis with the MISHKA code combined with the nonlinear wave-particle interaction code HAGIS shows that the loss of toroidal symmetry caused by the n  =  1 fishbones affects strongly the confinement of non-resonant high energy fusion-born tritons and protons by perturbing their orbits and expelling them. An urgent task today is the formation of scientific approaches to the creation of a system to assess the effectiveness of medicaltechnologies in sports medicine, taking into account the increased requirements not only in assessing their safety, but also withthe mandatory analysis of their impact on the parameters of functional readiness of the athlete. We conducted the study usinga comprehensive methodological approach developed in terms of the possibility of its application in case of mono-factorial exposure(means of pharmacological support).Aim. To determine the effectiveness of pharmacological agent’s complexes indicated for use in the prevention of fatigue by their effecton physical performance and psycho-emotional state of persons professionally engaged in sports.Material and methods. We performed a retrospective analysis of 30 athletes involved in skiing sports (biathlon, cross-country skiingand cross-country skiing) and evaluated the efficacy of two combinations of pharmacological agents not included in the WADA bannedlist, indicated for the prevention of fatigue, compared with placebo. Functional state of the athletes was estimated on the 7th and 15thdays according to the parameters of endurance testing on the “Norwegian” protocol “until failure”, 5 loading steps, psychoemotionalstate (hardware-software complex “Diamed-MBS”, psychological status (Lusher test, WAM, Mini-Mult) on the 7th and 15th days. Weanalyzed the dynamics of general and biochemical blood tests, general urinalysis.Results and discussion. Load time before failure, the main indicator characterizing the success of the athlete’s professional activity, didnot differ in all three groups when testing the background values, on the 7th and 15th days of the study, but consistently increased fromthe beginning to the end of the experiment. Abstract

The fusion-born alpha particle heating in magnetically confined fusion machines is a high priority subject for studies. The self-heating of thermonuclear fusion plasma by alpha particles was observed in recent deuterium-tritium (D-T) experiments on the joint European torus. This observation was possible by conducting so-called "afterglow" experiments where transient high fusion yield was achieved with neutral beam injection as the only external heating source, and then termination of the heating at peak performance. This allowed the first direct evidence for electron heating of plasmas by fusion-born alphas to be obtained. Interpretive transport modeling of the relevant D-T and reference deuterium discharges is consistent with the alpha particle heating observation.

32. Lost alpha Faraday cup foil noise characterization during Joint European Torus plasma post-processing analysis.

Abstract

Capacitive plasma pickup is a well-known and difficult problem for plasma-facing edge diagnostics. This problem must be addressed to ensure an accurate and robust interpretation of the real signal measurements vs noise. The Faraday cup fast ion loss detector array of the Joint European Torus (JET) is particularly prone to this issue and can be used as a testbed to prototype solutions. The issue of separation and distinction between warranted fast ion signal and electromagnetic plasma noise has traditionally been solved with hardware modifications, but a more versatile post-processing approach is of great interest. This work presents post-processing techniques to characterize the signal noise. While hardware changes and advancements may be limited, the combination with post-processing procedures allows for more rapid and robust analysis of measurements. The characterization of plasma pickup noise is examined for alpha losses in a discharge from JET's tritium campaign. In addition to highlighting the post-processing methodology, the spatial sensitivity of the detector array is also examined, which presents significant advantages for the physical interpretation of fast ion losses.

Abstract

The JET FILD is a scintillator-based Fast-ion Loss Detector optimized to measure fusion-born alpha-particle losses. This work covers its upgrade and absolute calibration in preparation for the following JET DT experiments. A fast scintillator material (TG-Green) has been installed in the JET FILD. A heater jacket is installed around the fiber bundle, responsible for transmitting the light from the scintillator plate, to anneal the fiber obscuring due to neutron damage. The JET FILD has been upgraded with a 1 Mpx camera and 2 MHz photomultiplier data acquisition hardware. Full-orbit simulations give an estimate of the shading effects on the scintillator plate of the first wall structures and provide a synthetic signal of the JET FILD. A detector instrument function enables absolute values of fast-ion losses using calibration factors. The calibration factors are made available in a shot-to-shot basis for the characterized species and energies and with corrections for the diagnostic conditions. The fast acquisition system sets the Nyquist frequency (1 MHz) above the typical mode frequencies (≈10 2  kHz), thus making it possible to identify MHD-induced fast-ion losses.

34. Measuring temperature profiles in high-power optical fiber components.

Abstract

We demonstrate a new method for measuring changes in temperature distribution caused by coupling a high-power laser beam into an optical fiber and by splicing two fibers. The measurement technique is based on interrogating a fiber Bragg grating by using low-coherence spectral interferometry. A large temperature change is found owing to coupling of a high-power laser into a multimode fiber and to splicing of two multimode fibers. Measurement of the temperature profile rather than the average temperature along the grating allows study of the cause of fiber heating. The new measurement technique enables us to monitor in real time the temperature profile in a fiber without the affecting system operation, and it might be important for developing and improving the reliability of high-power fiber components.
