Abstract

Abstract The Baikal Gigaton Volume Detector (Baikal-GVD) is a km $$^3$$ 3 -scale neutrino detector currently under construction in Lake Baikal, Russia. The detector consists of several thousand optical sensors arranged on vertical strings, with 36 sensors per string. The strings are grouped into clusters of 8 strings each. Each cluster can operate as a stand-alone neutrino detector. The detector layout is optimized for the measurement of astrophysical neutrinos with energies of $$\sim $$ ∼ 100 TeV and above. Events resulting from charged current interactions of muon (anti-)neutrinos will have a track-like topology in Baikal-GVD. A fast $$\chi ^2$$ χ 2 -based reconstruction algorithm has been developed to reconstruct such track-like events. The algorithm has been applied to data collected in 2019 from the first five operational clusters of Baikal-GVD, resulting in observations of both downgoing atmospheric muons and upgoing atmospheric neutrinos. This serves as an important milestone towards experimental validation of the Baikal-GVD design. The analysis is limited to single-cluster data, favoring nearly-vertical tracks.

Abstract

Neutrino astronomy offers a novel view of the non-thermal Universe and is complementary to other astronomical disciplines. The field has seen rapid progress in recent years, including the first detection of astrophysical neutrinos in the TeV-PeV energy range by IceCube and the first identified extragalactic neutrino source (TXS 0506+056). Further discoveries are aimed for with new cubic-kilometer telescopes in the Northern Hemisphere: Baikal-GVD, in Lake Baikal, and KM3NeT-ARCA, in the Mediterranean sea. The construction of Baikal-GVD proceeds as planned; the detector currently includes over 2000 optical modules arranged on 56 strings, providing an effective volume of 0.35 km$^3$. Abstract

The Baikal-GVD deep underwater neutrino experiment participates in the international multi-messenger program to detect the astrophysical sources of high- and ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray particles, being at the stage of array deployment and a step-by-step increase of the telescope’s effective volume to the scale of a cubic kilometer. At present, the telescope consists of seven clusters containing 2016 photodetectors. The effective volume of the detector has reached 0.35 km $${}^{3}$$ for the selection of shower events from neutrino interactions in Baikal water. The experimental data have been accumulated in a continuous exposure mode since 2015, allowing a prompt data analysis and a celestial-sphere monitoring program to be implemented in real time. We discuss the structure of the data acquisition system, describe the physical event reconstruction procedure in the mode of fast response to alerts, and present the results of our analysis of nine alerts from the polar IceCube telescope from early September to late October 2020.

Abstract

Baikal-GVD is a kilometer scale neutrino telescope currently under construction in Lake Baikal. Due to water currents in Lake Baikal, individual photomultiplier housings are mobile and can drift away from their initial position. In order to accurately determine the coordinates of the photomultipliers, the telescope is equipped with an acoustic positioning system. The system consists of a network of acoustic modems, installed along the telescope strings and uses acoustic trilateration to determine the coordinates of individual modems. This contribution discusses the current state of the positioning in Baikal-GVD, including the recent upgrade to the acoustic modem polling algorithm., Presented at 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021)

Abstract

Baikal-GVD is a gigaton-scale neutrino observatory under construction in Lake Baikal. It currently produces about 100 GB of data every day. For their automatic processing, the Baikal Analysis and Reconstruction software (BARS) was developed. At the moment, it includes such stages as hit extraction from PMT waveforms, assembling events from raw data, assigning timestamps to events, determining the position of the optical modules using an acoustic positioning system, data quality monitoring, muon track and cascade reconstruction, as well as the alert signal generation. These stages are implemented as C++ programs which are executed sequentially one after another and can be represented as a directed acyclic graph. The most resource-consuming programs run in parallel to speed up processing. A separate Python package based on the luigi package is responsible for program execution control. Additional information such as the program execution status and run metadata are saved into a central database and then displayed on the dashboard. Abstract

The Baikal-GVD deep underwater neutrino experiment participates in the international multi-messenger program on discovering the astrophysical sources of high energy fluxes of cosmic particles, while being at the stage of deployment with a gradual increase of its effective volume to the scale of a cubic kilometer. In April 2021 the effective volume of the detector has been reached 0.4 km3 for cascade events with energy above 100 TeV generated by neutrino interactions in Lake Baikal. The alarm system in real-time monitoring of the celestial sphere was launched at the beginning of 2021, that allows to form the alerts of two ranks like "muon neutrino" and "VHE cascade". Recent results of fast follow-up searches for coincidences of Baikal-GVD high energy cascades with ANTARES/TAToO high energy neutrino alerts and IceCube GCN messages will be presented, as well as preliminary results of searches for high energy neutrinos in coincidence with the magnetar SGR 1935+2154 activity in period of radio and gamma burst in 2020., Comment: Submitted to Proc. of the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021), PoS-0946, July 12th -- 23rd, 2021, Online -- Berlin, Germany. 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory and Advanced Virgo observatories recently discovered gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral. A short gamma-ray burst that followed the merger of this binary was also recorded by Fermi gamma-ray burst monitor and International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory, indicating particle acceleration by the source. The precise location of the event was determined by optical detections of emission following the merger. We searched for high-energy neutrinos from the merger in the energy range of 1 TeV–100 PeV using the Baikal Gigaton Volume Detector. No neutrinos directionally coincident with the source were detected within ±500 s around the merger time, as well as during a 14-day period after the gravitational wave detection. We derived 90% C.L. upper limits on the neutrino fluence from GW170817 during a ±500 s window centered on the gravitational wave trigger time, and a 14-day window following the gravitational wave signal under the assumption of an E−2 neutrino energy spectrum.

Abstract

We present data on the luminescence of the Baikal water medium collected with the Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope. This three-dimensional array of light sensors allows the observation of time and spatial variations of the ambient light field. We report on observation of an increase of luminescence activity in 2016 and 2018. On the contrary, we observed practically constant optical noise in 2017. An agreement has been found between two independent optical noise data sets. These are data collected with online monitoring system and the trigger system of the cluster.

Abstract

Multi-messenger astronomy is a powerful tool to study the physical processes driving the non-thermal Universe. A combination of observations in cosmic rays, neutrinos, photons of all wavelengths and gravitational waves is expected. The alert system of the Baikal-GVD detector under construction will allow for a fast, on-line reconstruction of neutrino events recorded by the Baikal-GVD telescope and - if predefined conditions are satisfied - for the formation of an alert message to other communities. The preliminary results of searches for high-energy neutrinos in coincidence with GW170817/GRB170817A using the cascade mode of neutrino detection are discussed. Two Baikal-GVD clusters were operating during 2017. The zenith angle of NGC 4993 at the detection time of the GW170817 was 93.3 degrees. No events spatially coincident with GRB170817A were found. Given the non-detection of neutrino events associated with GW170817, upper limits on the neutrino fluence were established.

Abstract

The objective of the Baikal-GVD project is the construction of a km3-scale neutrino telescope in Lake Baikal. The Gigaton Volume Detector consists of a large three-dimensional array of photo-multiplier tubes. The first GVD-cluster has been deployed and commissioned in April 2015. The data acquisition system (DAQ) of the detector takes care of the digitization of the photo-multiplier tube signals, data transmission, filtering and storage. The design and the implementation of the data acquisition system are described.

Abstract

We reanalyze the dataset collected during the years 1998--2003 by the deep underwater neutrino telescope NT200 in the lake Baikal with the low energy threshold (10 GeV) in searches for neutrino signal from dark matter annihilations near the center of the Milky Way. Two different approaches are used in the present analysis: counting events in the cones around the direction towards the Galactic Center and the maximum likelihood method. We assume that the dark matter particles annihilate dominantly over one of the annihilation channels $b\bar{b}$, $W^+W^-$, $\tau^+\tau^-$, $\mu^+\mu^-$ or $\nu\bar{\nu}$. No significant excess of events towards the Galactic Center over expected neutrino background of atmospheric origin is found and we derive 90% CL upper limits on the annihilation cross section of dark matter., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, published version

Abstract

The second-stage neutrino telescope BAIKAL-GVD in Lake Baikal will be a research infrastructure aimed mainly at studying astrophysical neutrino fluxes by recording the Cherenkov radiation of the secondary muons and showers generated in neutrino interactions. The prototyping/early construction phase of the BAIKAL-GVD project which is directed towards deployment and operation of the first demonstration cluster has been started in April 2011. An important step on realization of the GVD project was made in 2014 by the deployment of the second stage of the demonstration cluster which contains 112 OMs arranged on five strings, as well as equipment of an acoustic positioning system and instrumentation string with an array calibration and environment monitoring equipment. Deployment of the demonstration cluster will be completed in 2015.

Abstract

Next generation cubic kilometer scale neutrino telescope Baikal-GVD is currently under construction in Lake Baikal. The detector is specially designed for search for high energies neutrinos whose sources are not yet reliably identified. Since April 2018 the telescope has been successfully operated in complex of three functionally independent clusters i.e. sub-arrays of optical modules (OMs) where now are hosted 864 OMs on 24 vertical strings. Each cluster is connected to shore by individual electro-optical cables. The effective volume of the detector for neutrino initiated cascades of relativistic particles with energy above 100 TeV has been increased up to about 0.15 km3. Preliminary results obtained with data recorded in 2016 and 2017 are discussed.

Abstract

Lake Baikal in Siberia is one of the most interesting lakes in the world. It is the world’s largest reservoir of fresh surface water and home to several hundred endemic species. At the same time it harboured the first underwater neutrino telescope NT200, now followed by its successor Baikal-GVD, a cubic-kilometre scale neutrino telescope. Within the Baikal Neutrino project a number of methods and instruments have been designed to study various processes in the Baikal ecosystem. Hundreds of optical, acoustic and other sensors allow for long-term 3D monitoring of water parameters like temperature, inherent optical properties or the intensity of water luminescence, as well as processes like sedimentation or deep water renewal. Here we present selected results of the interdisciplinary environmental studies.

Abstract

The Prototyping phase of the BAIKAL-GVD project has been started in April 2011 with the deployment of first autonomous engineering array which comprises all basic elements and systems of the Gigaton Volume Detector (GVD) in Lake Baikal. The prototyping phase will be concluded with deployment of the GVD demonstration cluster “DUBNA” in 2015, which will comprise 192 light sensors arranged at 8 strings. The first stage of the GVD demonstration cluster which consists of three strings was deployed in April 2013 and successfully operated up to February 2014. We review the prototyping phase of the BAIKAL-GVD project and describe the configuration and design of the 2013 engineering array.

We analyze sensitivity of the gigaton volume telescope Baikal-GVD for detection of neutrino signal from dark matter annihilations or decays in the Galactic Center. Expected bounds on dark matter annihilation cross section and its lifetime are found for several annihilation/decay channels.

Abstract

We present a status of the Baikal-GVD Project. The objective of this project is a construction of a km3-scale neutrino telescope in the Lake Baikal. As an important milestone, the first GVD engineering array has been deployed and ran in April, 2011. Application of a completely new technology gave us an opportunity to study all the basic elements of the future full detector and to finalize the GVD technical design. We discuss the configuration and the design of the engineering array as well as data performance with the preliminary results.

Abstract

The NT1000 deep-water neutrino telescope with an effective volume of ∼2 km3 is currently being developed at Lake Baikal by the BAIKAL collaboration. The telescope will be composed of functionally independent setups—clusters of strings of optical modules based on photomultiplier tubes (with eight strings in each cluster). Since 2011, field tests of the basic elements and systems of the future telescope included in autonomous measuring complexes—prototypes of the NT1000 cluster—have been performed at Lake Baikal. The basic elements and the layout of one of the currently considered versions of the acoustic positioning system for the NT1000 telescope are described, and results of tests of the system prototype included as a component in the experimental cluster of the year 2012 are presented.

Abstract

In present analysis we complete search for a dark matter signal with the Baikal neutrino telescope NT200 from potential sources in the sky. We use five years of data and look for neutrinos from dark matter annihilations in the dwarfs spheroidal galaxies in the Southern hemisphere and the Large Magellanic Cloud known as the largest and close satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. We do not find any excess in observed data over expected background from the atmospheric neutrinos towards the LMC or any of tested 22 dwarfs. We perform a joint likelihood analysis on the sample of five selected dwarfs and found a concordance of the data with null hypothesis of the background-only observation. We derive 90% CL upper limits on the cross section of annihilating dark matter particles of mass between 30 GeV and 10 TeV into several channels both in our combined analysis of the dwarfs and in a particular analysis towards the LMC., 15 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

The operation of large underwater neutrino telescopes requires the precise knowledge of the water parameters governing light absorption and scattering, as well as a continuous monitoring of these parameters. For this purpose, a stationary underwater device, ASP-15, has been developed by the Baikal collaboration. We describe the basic assumptions and formulae behind ASP-15, the methods how absorption length, scattering length and phase functions are determined, the design of the device, and give some results obtained over many years of operation in conjuction with the Baikal telescope NT200.

Abstract

The first stage Baikal Neutrino Telescope NT200 has been operating since 1998 and was upgraded to the 10 Mton detector NT200+ in 2005. The preparation towards a development of a km 3 -scale detector in Lake Baikal is currently a central activity point. As an important milestone a km 3 -prototype Cherenkov string, based on completely new technology, was installed in 2008 and has been successfully operating together with NT200+. It was upgraded in April 2009. Also, we review the status of high-energy acoustic neutrino detection activities in Lake Baikal.

We present data on the luminescence of the Baikal water medium collected with the Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope. This three-dimensional array of light sensors allows the observation of time and spatial variations of the ambient light field. In 2016, we observed a maximum of luminescence activity between July and October.

Abstract

We review the status of high-energy acoustic neutrino detection activities in Lake Baikal. The Baikal collaboration constructed a hydro-acoustic device which may be regarded as a prototype subunit for a future underwater acoustic neutrino telescope. The device is capable of common operation with the Baikal neutrino telescope NT200+, and is operating at a depth of about 150 m on the “NT200+ instrumentation string”. Our measurements show that the integral noise power in the frequency band 20–40 kHz can reach levels as low as about 1 mPa, i.e. one of the lowest noise levels measured at the currently considered acoustic neutrino sites. At the same time, short acoustic pulses with different amplitudes and shapes have been observed. Low sound absorption in Baikal freshwater and absence of strong acoustic noise sources do motivate further activities towards a large-scale acoustic neutrino detector in Lake Baikal.

We review the status of the Lake Baikal Neutrino Experiment. The Neutrino Telescope NT200 has been operating since 1998 and has been upgraded to the 10 Mton detector NT200+ in 2005. We present selected astroparticle physics results from long-term operation of NT200. Also discussed are activities towards acoustic detection of UHE-energy neutrinos, and results of associated science activities. Preparation towards a km3-scale (Gigaton volume) detector in Lake Baikal is currently a central activity. We review the status of the Baikal Neutrino Experiment. The Neutrino Telescope NT200 is operating in Lake Baikal since 1998 and has been upgraded to the 10 Mton detector NT200+ in 2005. We present selected results concerning astroparticle physics as well as results of environmental studies. We describe the strategy of creating a Gigaton (km3) scale neutrino detector at Lake Baikal. First steps of activities towards a km3 Baikal neutrino telescope, including the development of acoustic high energy neutrino detection method are discussed.

Abstract

The 10 Mton scale Neutrino telescope NT 200 + is operating in Lake Baikal since April, 2005. It's main physics goal is the detection of high energy neutrino cascades in the 10 2 – 10 5 TeV energy range. The NT 200 + sensitivity to astrophysical diffuse neutrinos is four times that of it's predecessor NT200 the telescope that has been operating since 1998, yielding a variety of physics results. A km-scale (Gigaton Volume) Neutrino telescope in Lake Baikal is planned, the R&D phase has started in 2006. We give the basic layout of this Baikal km3-detector, which will be made of building blocks similar to NT 200 + .

Abstract

We review the present status of the Baikal Neutrino Experiment and present results of a search for upward-going atmospheric neutrinos and magnetic monopoles obtained with the detector NT200. The results of a search for very high energy neutrinos are presented and an upper limit on the extraterrestrial diffuse neutrino flux is obtained. We describe the strategy of upgrading the NT200 to NT200+ and creating a detector on the Gigaton scale at Lake Baikal. The first results obtained with the new NT200+ detector as a basic cell of a future Gigaton detector are presented.

Abstract

Inelastic interactions of muons in the NUSEX detector located at a depth of about 5000 hg/cm 2 have been analysed. Distributions of secondary hadrons in range and fly-out angle have been measured. The possible contribution of hadrons emitted at large angles to the background flux of upward-going particles in underground neutrino experiments is discussed.

Abstract

The Baikal neutrino telescope NT200 is in operation since April, 1998. We present physics results obtained with this detector during 1998–2002. Since April 2005, the upgraded 10-Mton scale telescope NT200+ is operating. For a km3-scale neutrino telescope in Lake Baikal, the R&D phase has started in 2006.

Abstract

The Cherenkov water detector with volume 2000 m 3 for registration of ν-induced muons from the bottom hemisphere on the ground level was constructed. First results of muon detection are described. Methods of atmospheric muon flux suppression and possibility to reach the rejection factor necessary for separation of ν-induced muons are discussed.

Abstract

A Cherenkov water detector with volume 9× 9 × 26 cubic meters is described.The spatial lattice of the detector is formed by quasispherical measuring modules which allow to detect Cherenkov light from any direction with practically equal efficiency. Each of the modules consists of six PMTs directed along rectangular coordinate axes. The possibility of neutrino-induced muon detection under conditions of high background on the Earth's surface is discussed. Experimental data obtained during Spring 1996 are analysed.

Abstract

We report theoretical and experimental results of on-going feasibility studies to detect cosmic neutrinos acoustically in Lake Baikal. In order to examine ambient noise conditions and to develop re- spective pulse detection techniques a prototype device was created. The device is operating at a depth of 150 m at the site of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope and is capable to detect and classify acoustic signals with different shapes, as well as signals from neutrino- induced showers.
