The article presents the results of the first year of work of the national research project on E ̄ra ̄nšahr in Parthian and Sasanian times, carried out by three research teams of Sapienza – University of Rome, University of Bologna and University of Turin (PRIN 2017PR34CS “Eranshahr: uomo, ambiente e società nell’Iran arsacide e sasanide. Testimonianze scritte, cultura materiale e società da Arsace a Yazdegard III. Tre casi studio: Pars, Pahlaw e Khuzestan”). The project was born to investigate the relations between man, po‐ litical power and territory in Iran during the Arsacid and Sasanian periods (III BC ‐ VII AD), a millennium of history set between two political transitions of considerable importance: the first between the dynasty of Seleucids and that of the Arsacids; the second between the Sasanian Empire and the Islamic Caliphate. In this framework, we intend to analyse the elements of continuity and discontinuity that have contributed to shaping the Iranian identity. The research considers two categories of documents, namely written sources and those more closely related to material culture, to study three nodal areas of ancient Iran, each one linked to the specific research interests of one of the three teams: the central‐northern plateau between the historical regions of Ma ̄d and Pahlaw (Sapienza), Pa ̄rs (Bologna) and Khuzestan (Turin). The project embraces deep interdisciplinarity and provides for the involvement of three complementary units operating with different methodological approaches. We, indeed, believe sharing different disciplinary skills in a transversal perspec‐ tive to be essential to adequately address one of the most significant cultural contexts of the ancient world.

BackgroundData on the relationship between peritoneal dialysis (PD), BMD and aortic calcifications (AOC) are lacking.Objectivesto study the relationship between the degree of AOC and DXA and Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry (REMS) acquisitions.MethodsConsecutive patients referring to the PD our clinic were enrolled. Lumbar spine (LS) and proximal femur REMS scans were performed, and LS (anteroposterior and laterolateral) and proximal femur DXA scans were performed as well. The degree of AOC was assessed through the semiquantitative score described by Kauppila et al, and applied to the laterolateral LS DXA scans. To test for correlations between different variables, we used the Pearson’s correlation for continuous variables and Spearman’s rho for discrete variables. Multiple regression analysis was performed to adjust for age and body mass index (BMI) the correlation between BMD and the CKD duration. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants (protocol 1483CESC).Results41 total patients were enrolled (29 males, 19 females). Median disease duration of CKD [IQR]: 132 months [48-140]. 15% had vertebral fractures at the DXA Vertebral Fracture Assessment (VFA). The median calcification score [IQR] was 2 [0-6] (min-max 0-20).We found a statistically significant positive correlation of moderate strength between the total calcification score and the difference between the DXA AP T-score and the DXA LL T-score at the LS (pFigure 1.scatter plot reporting the relationship between the difference between the AP and LL T-scores and the aortic calcifications score.After adjustment for confounders, we found a significant negative between the LS and femoral neck BMD measured through REMS and CKD duration (Table 1). Engineered tissues scaffolds should be design to mimic, at least partially, the extracellular matrix (ECM) in native tissues. Our scaffold's design satisfies, important challenges among the implant architecture requirements: (i) a fiber mesh entanglement mimicking physical attributes of natural ECM; (ii) a nanostructure surface roughness and chemical cues to increase the interaction with host tissue; (iii) a hydrolytic and enzymatic biodegradability; (iv) an open interconnected macroporosity to promote highly permeability and (v) a tensile stability under mechanical damage mechanisms. These properties are very important for cell seeding, adhesion, vascularization, new ECM formation and the subsequent tissue regeneration. Fil: Sartuqui, Javier. Bones are complex nanocomposites composed mainly by hydroxyapatite nanocrystals. Different factors characterize its morphology: composition, length, orientation, roughness. To increase our understanding of the tissue morphology at this fundamental lever of organization, a new method based on the straight skelonization of the images obtained by electronic microscopy is proposed. The method detects and measures the length and angularity of any straight edge of over the image. The technique resolved several test patterns independent of size and angle of rotation. Several samples obtained from different substrates were analyzed with the method. The results were consistent with those values obtained from conventional methods. Although still limited as a laboratory application, shape analysis has the potential to provide insight into the mechanisms of crystal growing and may provide a basis for specifications or guidelines for the manufacturing of biomaterial for bone tissue engineering. Our proposed automated computational method for the analysis and quantification digital images of bone tissue at microscale provide a rapid and accurate of the mechanical properties of the tissue. Nowadays, the repair of large-size bone defects represents a huge medical challenge. A line of attack is the construction of advanced biomaterials having multifunctional properties. In this work, we show the creation of biocompatible MoOx-hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nano-HA/MoOx) that simultaneously exhibit self-activated fluorescence and antibiotic skills. Along this text, we demonstrate that the insertion of molybdenum, an essential trace element, into the non-stoichiometric calcium deficient hydroxyapatite lattice generates intrinsic electronic point defects that exacerbate its epifluorescence blue emission and provokes new red emissions, preserving, always, its bioactivity. Furthermore, these point defects, acting as electron acceptors, stimulate the materials´ biological redox status and promote the death of pathogen microorganisms after their direct contact. A putative mechanism, by which bacteria lose electrons from their metabolic circuit that alter the function of their cytoplasmic membrane and potentially die, agrees with our results. Our findings highlight the importance of tuning the electronic communications between biomaterial interfaces and biological units, and support the use of self-fluorescent MoOx-hydroxyapatite nanoparticles as fundamental building blocks for new real-time imaging platforms against bone infection. Bone substitute materials based on bioceramics and polymers have evolved shifting from a passive role where they are merely accepted by the body; to an active role, where they respond to particular environmental conditions or to different types of cues generating suitable integration (osseointegration for this case) inside the host tissue. In this work, two types of composite materials based on a bioceramic (synthetic nano-hydroxyapatite, HA) and a biopolymer (sodium alginate, ALG) have been designed and assessed for promoting the bone regeneration. These materials were loaded with ciprofloxacin (CIP) for obtaining, not only a suitable material for a filling but with antibacterial properties. Therefore, their main features were studied through Fourier transformed-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy was used for obtaining the released concentrations of CIP and Zeta-potential (ζ-potential) was used for characterizing the adsorption of CIP onto nanoparticles. The release profile of this drug has been fit with the Ritger-Peppas model, used for studying the release kinetics of hydrogel-based systems. The bioactivity of these composites was also evaluated after 30 days of incubation in a simulated body fluid solution (SBF). Then, the assessment of antibacterial capability against the three main strains cause osteomyelitis was performed. Finally, the cell viability study and the cellular morphology assay were also carried out. These last assays have shown encouraging results and, gathered with their other properties, such as their bioactivity and antibacterial properties; they could lead to propose these materials as new bone filler antibiotic devices.

BackgroundRadiofrequency echographic multi-spectrometry (REMS) is a novel ultrasound-based technique that has shown good reliability in the assessment of bone mineral density (BMD).ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to compare the performance of the REMS BMD assessment with dual-energy X-rays absorptiometry (DXA) in a cohort of patients affected by end-stage renal disease undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD).MethodsConsecutive patients referring to the PD clinic of our hospital were enrolled. Lumbar spine and proximal femur REMS scans were performed, and lumbar spine (anteroposterior and laterolateral) and proximal femur DXA scans were performed as well. Clinical data were extracted from medical records. The risk assessment outputs of two fracture risk algorithms (FRAX and DeFRA), calculated upon the worst BMD obtained from either technique were compared as well. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc analysis (Bonferroni) and a two-sided Student’s t-test were used to estimate the absolute differences between groups.Written informed consent was obtained from all participants included (protocol 1483 CESC).Results41 total patients were enrolled (Table 1). No significant differences were documented between the BMD T-scores measured through DXA or REMS at the proximal femur. At the lumbar spine, the DXA laterolateral T-score was not significantly different from that of REMS, while the DXA anteroposterior T-score was significantly higher than both the anteroposterior DXA and the REMS measurements (Figure 1, panel A and B). Local delivery systems from an osteoconductive biomaterial are suggested as a promising strategy to avoid simultaneously peri-implant traumas and to induce tissue regeneration. In this work, it is detailed the design and construction of a multi-drug delivery formulation based on lipid membrane mimetic coated nano-hydroxyapatite, LMm/nano-HA, as a bone-specific drug delivery approach. The optimal LMm/nano-HA formulation was selected after analysing the lipid/nano-HA interaction by dynamic light scattering (DLS), ζ-potential, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and UV–vis spectroscopy. After the initial screening, Ciprofloxacin and Ibuprofen simultaneous -load and -release efficiency from selected LMm/nano-HA was assessed. pH-responsive kinetic profiles of local drug distribution were characterized and compared with currently applied systemic doses. Finally, the systems’ biocompatibility and drug released activity were positively validated. The obtained results demonstrated that LMm/nano-HA formulations can represent a valuable multi-modal platform in bone tissue therapies. Fil: Placente, Damián. Nanoscale topography plays a central role in adult-stem-cell-niches. In this study we have demonstrated that by an accurate material design, mimicking the composition and structure of bone extracellular matrix, it is possible to guide human adipose stem cells (hASCs) to attain an osteogenic commitment, in vitro, without the requirement of soluble additives or grow factors. Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) activity and Alizarin Red S test demonstrated that hASCs cultured onto hydroxyapatite frameworks dry-coating differentiated into mature osteoblasts even in the absence of specific inducing factors. Optical and electron scanning microscopic (SEM) observations revealed a direct cellular-material interaction that indicated an appropriate communication between nanotopographical features and the integrin receptors in the cell´s focal adhesions. Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) analysis confirmed the expression of specific markers of pre-osteoblast and mature osteoblast stages as osterix (OSX), osteopontin (OPN), osteocalcin (OC) and; specific markers of extracellular matrix maturation and mineralization stages as alkaline phosphatase (ALPL), collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1) and osteonectin (ON). Surface colonization competition between bacteria and host cells is one of the critical factors involved in tissue/implant integration. Current biomaterials are evaluated for their ability both of withstanding favorable responses of host tissue cells and of resisting bacterial contamination. In this work, the antibacterial ability of biocompatible Mg2+-substituted nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HA) was investigated. The densities of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli strains were significantly decreased after culture in the presence of Mg-substituted HA materials in direct correlation with Mg2+-Ca2+ switch in the HA lattice. It was noticed that this decrease was accompanied by a minimal alteration of bacterial environments; therefore, the Mg2+-HA antibacterial effect was associated with the material surface topography and it electroactive behavior. It was observed that 2.23 wt % Mg2+-HA samples exhibited the best antibacterial performance; it decreased 2-fold the initial population of E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and S. aureus at the intermediate concentration (50 mg mL-1 of broth). Bioceramic nanoparticles exhibit excellent features that enable them to function as an ideal material for hard tissue engineering. However, to fully understand their behavior, it is of crucial importance to understand their behavior within the fluids of the human body. To achieve this goal, we have studied the interaction between hydroxyapatite nanorods (HA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). First, we describe the surface morphology of the nanoparticle. Then, the main characteristics of the physiological interplay of BSA and the hydroxyapatite nanoparticle are presented by using a battery of techniques: ITC, zeta potential, UV–vis, fluorescence, and CD. Experimental data was analyzed by developing specific approaches to determining important parameters such as rates, affinities, and stochiometries of protein associated with the nanoparticles. ITC has been confirmed as a powerful technique for determining the affinity, binding, and thermodynamics of BSA–nanoparticle interactions. Careful quantitative assessment of the kinetic properties of the adsorption were revealed by UV–vis and fluorescence measurements. The aim of this work is to assess the behavior of biocomposites (CPSs) in regard to the generation of biogenic hydroxyapatite and also their degradation depending on the concentration of cross-linker agent, pH, and ionic strength. The development of these composites with potential application in bone tissue regeneration is based on alginate and synthetic nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HA), which was used as a cross-linker agent. The CPSs showed the capability to develop biogenic hydroxyapatite when they were incubated in simulated body fluid (SBF) depending on the incubation time and concentration of the linker. These results were analyzed by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, the CPSs have shown resistance to the degradation (demonstrated by swelling and dissolution tests) when the mentioned conditions were modified. Finally, the development of a liquid crystalline phase within the composites, which contributes to reinforce their structure, is a novel finding in this study. This behavior has been shown by means of optical microscopy (OM) with crossed polaroids. Thus, these composites displayed promising results to be used as bone filling materials in the future. The bioactivity of an implant is displayed on its ability to induce heterogeneous nucleation of biogenic apatite onto its surface upon immersion in body fluids; forming, through this layer, a stable bond with the host tissue. The present article evaluates the bioactivity of different nanostructured substrates based on synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) and titania (TiO2) nanoparticles, where we extend the debate regarding the selective roles played by the presence of albumin on the biogenic apatite coating evolution. The substrates bone-bonding potential was evaluated by keeping the materials in contact with Simulated Body Fluid, while the influence of the presence of Bovine Serum Albumin in bioactivity was analyzed by a spectrophotometric technique. Our results show that materials’ surface reactivity and their interfacial hydration are responsible for the bonding-site alteration and surface charge density distribution, which in turn, regulate the protein adsorption process. As a matter of fact, variations on the protein adsorbed density have a directly proportional impact on calcium binding sites, which should be responsible for the initiation of the mineralization process, disturbing the deposition of the interfacial calcium phosphate (Ca-P) mineralized coating.

Ionic substitution can affect essential physicochemical properties leading to a specific biological behavior upon implantation. Therefore, it has been proposed as a tool to increase the biological efficiency of calcium phosphate based materials. In the following study, we have evaluated the contribution of an important cation in nature, Mg2+, into the structure of previously studied biocompatible and biodegradable hydroxyapatite (HA) nanorods and its subsequent effect on its chemical, morphology, and bone mimetic articulation. Mg2+-substituted HA samples were synthesized by an aqueous wet-chemical precipitation method, followed by an hydrothermal treatment involving a Mg2+ precursor that partially replace Ca2+ ions into HA crystal lattice; Mg2+ concentrations were modulated to obtain a nominal composition similar to that exists in calcified tissues. Hydrothermally synthesized Mg2+-substituted HA nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, FT-NIR and EDX spectroscopies, field emission scanning and high resolution transmission electron microscopies (FE-SEM, H-TEM). Molecular modeling combining ab initio methods and power diffraction data were also performed. Results showed that Mg2+-substitution promoted the formation of calcium deficient HA (cdHA) where Mg2+ replacement is energetically favored at Ca(1) position in a limited and specific amount directing the additional Mg2+ toward the surface of the crystal. The control of Mg2+ incorporation into HA nanorods gave rise to a tailored crystallinity degree, cell parameters, morphology, surface hydration, solubility, and degradation properties in a dose-replacement dependent manner. The obtained materials show qualities that conjugated together to drive an optimal in vitro cellular viability, spreading, and proliferation confirming their biocompatibility. Nowadays, the repair of large-size bone defects represents a huge medical challenge. A line of attack is the construction of advanced biomaterials having multifunctional properties. In this work, we show the creation of biocompatible MoOx-hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nano-HA/MoOx) that simultaneously exhibit self-activated fluorescence and antibiotic skills. Along this text, we demonstrate that the insertion of molybdenum, an essential trace element, into the non-stoichiometric calcium deficient hydroxyapatite lattice generates intrinsic electronic point defects that exacerbate its epifluorescence blue emission and provokes new red emissions, preserving, always, its bioactivity. Furthermore, these point defects, acting as electron acceptors, stimulate the materials' biological redox status and promote the death of pathogen microorganisms after their direct contact. A putative mechanism, by which bacteria lose electrons from their metabolic circuit that alter the function of their cytoplasmic membrane and potentially die, agrees with our results. Our findings highlight the importance of tuning the electronic communications between biomaterial interfaces and biological units, and support the use of self-fluorescent MoOx-hydroxyapatite nanoparticles as fundamental building blocks for new real-time imaging platforms against bone infection.

As part of the training activities planned for the Chemical Engineering degree, in 2016, a group of students from the Chemical Engineering Laboratory course was challenged to face a plausible reuse of discarded eggshells. A straightforward methodology to synthesize phosphates such as calcium pyrophosphate or fluoroapatite among others was developed using commercial phosphoric acid and discarded eggshells as starting materials. Throughout the development of this activity, topics such as recycling and reuse of discarded materials, guided-inquiry instruction, self-learning, and soft-skills development were successfully covered. The strategy proposed in this work encourages students to make connections between science and life and provides an excellent linkage between chemical research and recycling without neglecting those basics required by the official curriculum. This paper put forward, for the first time, a methodology that combines concentration gradients MCR-ALS to carry out the quantification of arsenic in natural waters. For the generation of the concentration profiles, an automatic system in which arsine is extracted from the arsenic present in a single water drop was employed and a strict control over the concentration and rate of reducing agent addition was maintained. This system allows, with the help of digital images, the record of color changes, the exploration of mass transfer mechanism and, simultaneously, the evaluation of kinetic and diffusion profiles offering an increased control over the diffusive portraits at trace concentration levels. Furthermore, from the green analytical chemistry (GAC) point of view, the proposed method is environmental-friendly and economical in comparison with their conventional counterparts. It uses reagent volumes on the order of micro liters. In addition, it was performed in an extremely short experimental time (190 s) with excellent detection limits (0.03 μg L−1) and quantification (0.09 μg L−1) and it has a linear response from 0.05 μg L−1 to 1.00 μg L−1 of arsenic in natural waters.

Background: Understanding the physicochemical basis and the different models of nanosystems is nowadays fundamental in a great number of scientific areas and industrial processes. Results: Here, we focus on nanosystems created by self-assembly, molecular or inorganic. The organization of single units at these scales is a challenging matter in light of the inherently small dimensions involved, the sensitivity of the system to small perturbations, and the problem of scaling up such a process for widespread use and implementation. Conclusion: This review examines the different self-assembly routes used to create nanostructures in both the equilibrium and non-equilibrium/dynamic systems and discusses their limits and applications. The formation of liposomes, nanoparticle micelles, and related systems by mixtures of drugs and/or surfactants is of major relevance for the design of drug delivery systems. We can design new systems using different compounds. Traditionally these systems are created by trial and error using experimental data. However, in most cases measuring all the possible combinations represents a extensive work and almost always unaffordable. In this sense, we can use theoretical concepts and develop computational models to predict different physicochemical properties of self-aggregation processes of mixed molecular systems. In a previous work, we developed a new PT-LFER model (Linear Free Energy Relationships, LFER, combined with Perturbation Theory, PT, ideas) for binary systems. The best PT-LFER model found predicted the effects of 25000 perturbations over nine different properties of binary systems. The present work has two parts. Firstly, we carry out an analysis on the new results on the applications and experimental-theoretical studies of binary selfassembled systems. In the second part, we report for the first time, a new experimental-theoretic study of the NaDC-DTAB binary system. Intrinsic material skills have a deep effect on the mechanical and biological performance of bone substitutes, as well as on its associated biodegradation properties. In this work we have manipulated the preparation of collagenous derived fiber mesh frameworks to display a specific composition, morphology, open macroporosity, surface roughness and permeability characteristics. Next, the effect of the induced physicochemical attributes on the scaffold's mechanical behavior, bone bonding potential and biodegradability were evaluated. It was found that the scaffold microstructure, their inherent surface roughness, and the compression strength of the gelatin scaffolds can be modulated by the effect of the cross-linking agent and, essentially, by mimicking the nano-scale size of hydroxyapatite in natural bone. A clear effect of bioactive hydroxyapatite nano-rods on the scaffolds skills can be appreciated and it is greater than the effect of the cross-linking agent, offering a huge perspective for the upcoming progress of bone implant technology. PtSn/TiO2 and PtSn/Ce-doped TiO2 catalysts were synthesized and evaluated for ethanol electro-oxidation in acid media. Titanium dioxide and Ce-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by hydrothermal method followed by calcination at 923 K. Bimetallic PtSn catalysts supported on the oxide materials were synthesized by microwave assisted reduction in ethylene glycol (EG). The structural properties of the resulting materials were evaluated via TEM and XRD, and the compositions were assessed by EDX and ICP-AES analysis. PtSn nanoparticles of about 3-4 nm were deposited on TiO2 and Ce-TiO2 particles. It was found that the catalyst composition is scarcely influenced by the cerium content in the mixed oxides while the electrochemical surface area per unit mass decreases upon the incorporation of Ce in the anatase lattice. The electrochemical tests pointed out that the electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation decreases markedly as the Ce content increases. The results indicate that the presence of cerium in the titanium dioxide crystalline network induces local structural and electronic modifications, thereby leading to a reduction of the crystallinity, surface conductivity and the amount of OH species adsorbed on the surface of the oxide support. The aim of the work was to bio-convert pumpkin by-products in novel supplements supporting probiotics. The physicochemical and functional characterizations as well as the shelf life of the new product were analysed. Lower alcohol insoluble residue (AIR), 47 g/100 g, and higher protein, 12.2 g/100 g, were observed in the pumpkin powder supporting L. casei as the result of the probiotic growth. Water and oil holding capacities (23 g/g and 4.55 g/g, respectively) were not modified substantially due to probiotic presence. High non cellulosic carbohydrates content, ≈60 g/100 g AIR, as well as porous microstructure, helps to explain the remarkable hydration properties. The shelf life was determined by a L. casei count >106 CFU g−1 after the in vitro gastrointestinal digestion resulting 28 days at 22 °C. The supplement was tested in a commercial hot drink showing an increase in the probiotic survival of almost 4 log cycles respect to the free cells after 90 min at 63 °C. It could represent a relevant advantage for probiotic supplementation in hot preparations. Therefore the process shows potentiality for adding value to pumpkin by-products. The use of high doses of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs for patients with bone diseases, associated to implants or bone filling, can develop adverse effects; and consequently, it promotes to think new strategies to avoid this problem. In this work, it has been described the adsorption/release (or desorption) behavior of two drugs, ciprofloxacin (CIP) and ibuprofen (IBU), onto hydroxyapatite (nano-HA) at 37 °C. Through Ultraviolet-Visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, the concentrations of both drugs in adsorption, kinetic and desorption processes were obtained. The Fourier Transformed-Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Zeta-potential (ζ-potential), High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (H-TEM) and x-Ray Diffraction (xRD) were also used to characterize bared nanoparticles and those with adsorbed drugs. Five adsorption models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich) were used for describing the behavior of both active compounds. The adsorption processes (CIP/nano-HA and IBU/nano-HA) were better predicted by the Sips model than by the others. The kinetic adsorption data were processed, for both active agents, by application of Avrami's model. Desorption/release process (of both drugs) was evaluated though Korsmeyer-Peppas (K-P) model. Owing to the predictability of these systems, we propose the use of these active ceramics as potential bone filler for improving the treatment against bacterial bone infections and to avoid its associated inflammatory process. Biomaterials are frequently evaluated for pro-coagulant activity but usually in the presence of microparticles (MPs), cell-derived vesicles in blood plasma whose phospholipid surfaces allow coagulation factors to set up as functional assemblies. We tested the hypothesis that synthetic anionic surfaces can catalyze burst thrombin activation in human blood plasma in the absence of MPs. In a thromboelastography (TEG) assay with plastic sample cups and pins, recalcified human citrated platelet-poor plasma spontaneously burst-coagulated but with an unpredictable clotting time whereas plasma depleted of MPs by ultracentrifugation failed to coagulate. Coagulation of MP-depleted plasma was restored in a dose-dependent manner by glass microbeads, hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HA NPs), and carboxylic acid-containing anionic nanocoatings of TEG cups and pins (coated by glow-discharge plasma-polymerized ethylene containing oxygen, L-PPE:O with 4.4 and 6.8 atomic % [COOH]). Glass beads lost their pro-coagulant activity in MP-depleted plasma after their surfaces were nanocoated with hydrophobic plasma-polymerized hexamethyl disiloxane (PP-HMDSO). In FXII-depleted MP-depleted plasma, glass microbeads failed to induce coagulation, however, FXIa was sufficient to induce coagulation in a dose-dependent manner, with no effect of glass beads. These data suggest that anionic surfaces of crystalline, organic, and amorphous solid synthetic materials catalyze explosive thrombin generation in MP-depleted plasma by activating the FXII-dependent intrinsic contact pathway. The data also show that microparticles are pro-coagulant surfaces whose activity has been largely overlooked in many coagulation studies to-date. These results suggest a possible mechanism by which anionic biomaterial surfaces induce bone healing by contact osteogenesis, through fibrin clot formation in the absence of platelet activation.
