Abstract

We report the first observation of two Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes, Ξ c + → Σ + π − π + and Ξ c + → Σ − π + π + . We observe 59 ± 14 over a background of 87, and 22 ± 8 over a background of 13 events, respectively, for the signals. The data were accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996–1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600 GeV / c Σ − beam. The branching ratios of the decays relative to the Cabibbo-favored Ξ c + → Ξ − π + π + are measured to be B ( Ξ c + → Σ + π − π + ) / B ( Ξ c + → Ξ − π + π + ) = 0.48 ± 0.20 , and B ( Ξ c + → Σ − π + π + ) / B ( Ξ c + → Ξ − π + π + ) = 0.18 ± 0.09 , respectively. We also report branching ratios for the same decay modes of the Λ c + relative to Λ c + → p K − π + .

Abstract

We report on the measurement of the one-dimensional charged kaon correlation functions using 600~GeV/{\it c} $\Sigma^-$, $\pi^-$ and 540~GeV/{\it c} $p$ beams from the SELEX~(E781) experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. $K^{\pm}K^{\pm}$ correlation functions are studied for three transverse pair momentum, $k_T$, ranges and parameterized by a Gaussian form. The emission source radii, $R$, and the correlation strength, $\lambda$, are extracted. The analysis shows a decrease of the source radii with increasing kaon transverse pair momentum for all beam types., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract

We observe a signal for the doubly charmed baryon Ξ c c + in the decay mode Ξ c c + → p D + K − to complement the previous reported decay Ξ c c + → Λ c + K − π + in data from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. In this new decay mode we observe an excess of 5.62 events over a combinatoric background estimated by event mixing to be 1.38 ± 0.13 events. The mixed background has Gaussian statistics, giving a signal significance of 4.8σ. The Poisson probability that a background fluctuation can produce the apparent signal is less than 6.4 × 10 −4 . The observed mass of this state is 3518 ± 3 MeV / c 2 , consistent with the published result. Averaging the two results gives a mass of 3518.7 ± 1.7 MeV / c 2 . The observation of this new weak decay mode confirms the previous SELEX suggestion that this state is a double charm baryon. The relative branching ratio for these two modes is 0.36 ± 0.21 .

Abstract

Coherent Λπ− production on Pb of 600 GeV Σ− hyperons has been studied with the SELEX facility at Fermilab. Using the Primakoff formalism, we set a 90% CL upper limit on the radiative decay width Γ[Σ(1385)−→Σ−γ] s ≈1.385 GeV to be 56±16 μb.

Multiring signatures of the oscillation nu_mu --> nu_e are formulated for a water Cherenkov detector. These are appropriate for relatively high neutrino energies (over 2 GeV) that emphasize the matter effect and, therefore, may allow to measure the sign of the atmospheric mass-squared difference.

Abstract

The production of $D_s^-$ relative to $D_s^+$ as a function of $x_F $ with 600 GeV/c $\Sigma^-$ beam is measured in the interval $0.15 < x_F < 0.7$ by the SELEX (E781) experiment at Fermilab. The integrated charge asymmetries with 600 GeV/c $\Sigma^-$ beam ($0.53\pm0.06$) and $\pi^-$ beam ($0.06\pm0.11$) are also compared. The results show the $\Sigma^-$ beam fragments play a role in the production of $D_s^-$, as suggested by the leading quark model., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Physics Letter B

A method for detecting the transition \omutau in long-baseline accelerator experiments, that consists in comparing the far-to-near ratios of the spectra of quasielastic CC events generated by high- and low-energy beams of muon neutrinos, is proposed. Abstract

The charge-exchange reaction K + Xe → K 0 pXeis investigated using the data of the DIANA experiment. The distribution of the pK 0 effective mass shows a promi- nent enhancement near 1538 MeV formed by nearly 80 events above the background, whose width is consistent with being entirely due to the experimental resolution. Under the selections based on a simulation of K + Xe collisions, the statistical signif- icance of the signal reaches 5.5�. We interpret this observation as strong evidence for formation of a pentaquark baryon with positive strangeness, � + (uudd¯), in the charge-exchange reaction K + n → K 0 p on a bound neutron. The mass of the � + baryon is measured as m(� + ) = 1538 ± 2 MeV. Using the ratio between the num- bers of resonant and non-resonant charge-exchange events in the peak region, the intrinsic width of this baryon resonance is determined as ( � + ) = 0.34±0.10 MeV.

Abstract

We report new precision measurements of the lifetimes of the {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c} and D{sup 0} from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. Based upon 1630 {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c} and 10210 D{sup 0} decays we observe lifetimes of {tau}[{Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}]=198.1{+-} 7.0{+-}5.6 fs and {tau}[D{sup 0}]=407.9{+-}6.0{+-}4 .3 fs .

Abstract

A conceptual scheme of a hybrid-emulsion spectrometer for investigating various channels of neutrino oscillations is proposed. The design emphasizes detection of $\tau$ leptons by detached vertices, reliable identification of electrons, and good spectrometry for all charged particles and photons. A distributed target is formed by layers of low-Z material, emulsion-plastic-emulsion sheets, and air gaps in which $\tau$ decays are detected. The tracks of charged secondaries, including electrons, are momentum-analyzed by curvature in magnetic field using hits in successive thin layers of emulsion. The $\tau$ leptons are efficiently detected in all major decay channels, including \xedec. Performance of a model spectrometer, that contains 3 tons of nuclear emulsion and 20 tons of passive material, is estimated for different experimental environments. When irradiated by the $\nu_\mu$ beam of a proton accelerator over a medium baseline of $ \sim 1$ km/GeV, the spectrometer will efficiently detect either the \omutau and \omue transitions in the mass-difference region of $\Delta m^2 \sim 1$ eV$^2$, as suggested by the results of LSND. When exposed to the neutrino beam of a muon storage ring over a long baseline of $ \sim$ 10-20 km/GeV, the model detector will efficiently probe the entire pattern of neutrino oscillations in the region $\Delta m^2 \sim 10^{-2}-10^{-3}$ eV$^2$, as suggested by the data on atmospheric neutrinos., Comment: 34 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We report the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed charm baryon decay Xi(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+). We observe 150+/-22+/-5 events for the signal. The data were accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996-1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600 GeV/c Sigma(-) beam. The branching fractions of the decay relative to the Cabibbo-favored Xi(+)(c)-->Sigma+K-pi(+) and Xi(+)(c)-->Xi(-)pi(+)pi(+) are measured to be B(Xi(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+))/B(Xi(+)(c)-->Sigma+K-pi(+)) = 0.22+/-0. 06+/-0.03 and B(Xi(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+))/B(Xi(+)(c)-->Xi(-)pi(+)pi(+)) = 0.20+/-0.04+/-0.02, respectively.

Abstract

Novel detector schemes are proposed for the short-baseline neutrino experiments of next generation, aimed at exploring the large-$\Delta m^2$ domain of \omutau oscillations in the appearance mode. These schemes emphasize good spectrometry for charged particles and for electromagnetic showers and efficient reconstruction of \ypi_gg decays. The basic elements are a sequence of relatively thin emulsion targets, immersed in magnetic field and interspersed with electronic trackers, and a fine-grained electromagnetic calorimeter built of lead glass. These elements act as an integral whole in reconstructing the electromagnetic showers. This conceptual scheme shows good performance in identifying the $\tau$ (quasi-)two-body decays by their characteristic kinematics and in selecting the electronic decays of the $\tau$., Comment: 34 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The data on the reactions K^+Xe --> K^0 \gamma X and K^+Xe --> K^+ \gamma X, obtained with the bubble chamber DIANA, have been analyzed for possible radiative decays of the \Theta^+(1540) baryon: \Theta^+ --> K^0 p \gamma and \Theta^+ --> K^+ n \gamma. No signals have been observed, and we derive the upper limits \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^0 p \gamma) / \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^0 p) < 0.032 and \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^+ n \gamma) / \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^+ n) < 0.041 which, using our previous measurement of \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> KN) = (0.39+-0.10) MeV, translate to \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^0 p \gamma) < 8 keV and \Gamma(\Theta^+ --> K^+ n \gamma) < 11 keV at 90% confidence level. We have also measured the cross sections of K^+ -induced reactions involving emission of a neutral pion: \sigma(K^+n --> K^0 p \pi^0) = (68+-18) \mub and \sigma(K^+N --> K^+ N \pi^0) = (30+-8) \mub for incident K^+ momentum of 640 MeV., Comment: 8 pages

Abstract

We show that ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ hyperons produced by 800 GeV/c protons on targets of Be and Cu have significant polarizations (15--20%). These polarizations persist at values of ${p}_{t}\ensuremath{\approx}2\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathrm{c}$ and a wide range of ${x}_{F}$. The polarizations from the Cu target are consistently less than from Be. The average ratio of the ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ polarization from Cu to that from Be is $0.68\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08$.

The relative branching ratio Gamma(D0K+)/Gamma(D(+)(s)eta) is 0.14+/-0.06. The mechanism that keeps this state narrow is unclear. Its decay pattern is also unusual, being dominated by the D(+)(s)eta decay mode.

Abstract

Pion virtual compton scattering (VCS) via the reaction pi(-)e-->pi(-)egamma was observed in the Fermilab E781 SELEX experiment. SELEX used a 600 GeV/c pi(-) beam incident on target atomic electrons, detecting the incident pi(-) and the final state pi(-), electron and gamma. Theoretical predictions based on chiral perturbation theory are incorporated into a Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment and are compared to the data. The number of reconstructed events (=9) and their distribution with respect to the kinematic variables (for the kinematic region studied) are in reasonable accord with the predictions. The corresponding pi(-) VCS experimental cross section is sigma=38.8+/-13 nb, in agreement with the theoretical expectation of sigma=34.7 nb.

Abstract

We observe a signal for the doubly charmed baryon Xi(+)(cc) in the charged decay mode Xi(+)(cc)-->Lambda(+)(c)K-pi(+) in data from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. We observe an excess of 15.9 events over an expected background of 6.1+/-0.5 events, a statistical significance of 6.3sigma. The observed mass of this state is 3519+/-1 MeV/c(2). The Gaussian mass width of this state is 3 MeV/c(2), consistent with resolution; its lifetime is less than 33 fs at 90% confidence.

Abstract

We report new precision measurements of the lifetimes of the Lambda(+)(c) and D0 from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. Based upon 1630 Lambda(+)(c) and 10 210 D0 decays we observe lifetimes of tau[Lambda(+)(c)] = 198.1+/-7.0+/-5.6 fs and tau[D0] = 407.9+/-6.0+/-4.3 fs.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed charm baryon decay Ξ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+}. We observe 150±22±5 events for the signal. The data were accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996-1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600 GeV/c Σ^{-} beam. The branching fractions of the decay relative to the Cabibbo-favored Ξ_{c}^{+}→Σ^{+}K^{-}π^{+} and Ξ_{c}^{+}→Ξ^{-}π^{+}π^{+} are measured to be B(Ξ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+})/B(Ξ_{c}^{+}→Σ^{+}K^{-}π^{+})=0.22±0.06±0.03 and B(Ξ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+})/B(Ξ_{c}^{+}→Ξ^{-}π^{+}π^{+})=0.20±0.04±0.02, respectively.
