Peatland management practices, such as drainage and restoration, have a strong effect on boreal peatland methane (CH4) fluxes. Furthermore, CH4 fluxes are strongly controlled by local environmental conditions, such as soil hydrology, temperature and vegetation, which are all experiencing considerable changes due to climate change. Both management practices and climate change are expected to influence peatland CH4 fluxes during this century, but the magnitude and net impact of these changes is still insufficiently understood. In this study, we simulated the impacts of two forest management practices, rotational forestry and continuous cover forestry, as well as peatland restoration, on hypothetical forestry-drained peatlands across Finland using the land surface model JSBACH (Jena Scheme for Biosphere–Atmosphere Coupling in Hamburg) coupled with the soil carbon model YASSO and a peatland methane model HIMMELI (Helsinki Model of Methane Buildup and Emission for Peatlands). We further simulated the impacts of climatic warming using two RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) emission scenarios, RCP2.6 and RCP4.5. We investigated the responses of CH4 fluxes, soil water-table level (WTL), soil temperatures and soil carbon dynamics to changes in management practices and climate. Our results show that management practices have a strong impact on peatland WTLs and CH4 emissions that continues for several decades, with emissions increasing after restoration and clearcutting. Towards the end of the century, WTLs increase slightly, likely due to increasing precipitation. CH4 fluxes have opposing trends in restored and drained peatlands. In restored peatlands, CH4 emissions decrease towards the end of the century following decomposition of harvest residue in the top peat layers despite increasing WTLs, while in drained peatland forests sinks get weaker and occasional emissions become more common, likely due to rising WTLs and soil temperatures. The strength of these trends varies across the country, with CH4 emissions from restored peatlands decreasing more strongly in southern Finland, and forest soil CH4 sinks weakening most in northern Finland.

Arctic terrestrial greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) play an important role in the global GHG budget. However, these GHG fluxes are rarely studied simultaneously, and our understanding of the conditions controlling them across spatial gradients is limited. Here, we explore the magnitudes and drivers of GHG fluxes across fine-scale terrestrial gradients during the peak growing season (July) in sub-Arctic Finland. We measured chamber-derived GHG fluxes and soil temperature, soil moisture, soil organic carbon and nitrogen stocks, soil pH, soil carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio, soil dissolved organic carbon content, vascular plant biomass, and vegetation type from 101 plots scattered across a heterogeneous tundra landscape (5 km2). We used these field data together with high-resolution remote sensing data to develop machine learning models for predicting (i.e., upscaling) daytime GHG fluxes across the landscape at 2 m resolution. Our results show that this region was on average a daytime net GHG sink during the growing season. Although our results suggest that this sink was driven by CO2 uptake, it also revealed small but widespread CH4 uptake in upland vegetation types, almost surpassing the high wetland CH4 emissions at the landscape scale. Average N2O fluxes were negligible. CO2 fluxes were controlled primarily by annual average soil temperature and biomass (both increase net sink) and vegetation type, CH4 fluxes by soil moisture (increases net emissions) and vegetation type, and N2O fluxes by soil C/N (lower C/N increases net source). These results demonstrate the potential of high spatial resolution modeling of GHG fluxes in the Arctic. They also reveal the dominant role of CO2 fluxes across the tundra landscape but suggest that CH4 uptake in dry upland soils might play a significant role in the regional GHG budget.

Winter near-surface air temperatures have important implications for ecosystem functioning such as vegetation dynamics and carbon cycling. In cold environments, the persistence of seasonal snow cover can exert a strong control on the near-surface temperatures. However, the lack of in situ measurements of both snow cover duration and surface temperatures over high latitudes has made it difficult to estimate the spatio-temporal variability in this relationship. Here, we quantified the fine-scale variability in winter near-surface air temperatures (+2 cm) and snow cover duration (calculated from temperature time series) using a total of 441 microclimate loggers in seven study areas across boreal and tundra landscapes in Finland during 2019–2021. We further examined the drivers behind this variation using a structural equation model and the extent to which near-surface air temperatures are buffered from free-air temperatures during winter. Our results show that while average winter near-surface temperatures stay close to 0 ∘C across the study domain, there are large differences in their fine-scale variability among the study areas. Areas with large topographical variation, as well as areas with shallow snowpacks, showed the greatest variation in near-surface temperatures and in snow cover duration. In the tundra, for example, differences in minimum near-surface temperatures between study sites were close to 30 ∘C and topography was shown to be an important driver of this variability. In contrast, flat topography and long snow cover duration led to little spatial variation, as well as long periods of decoupling between near-surface and air temperatures. Quantifying and understanding the landscape-wide variation in winter microclimates improves our ability to predict the local effects of climate change in the rapidly warming boreal and tundra regions.

Forest microclimates contrast strongly with the climate outside forests. To fully understand and better predict how forests' biodiversity and functions relate to climate and climate change, microclimates need to be integrated into ecological research. Despite the potentially broad impact of microclimates on the response of forest ecosystems to global change, our understanding of how microclimates within and below tree canopies modulate biotic responses to global change at the species, community and ecosystem level is still limited. Here, we review how spatial and temporal variation in forest microclimates result from an interplay of forest features, local water balance, topography and landscape composition. We first stress and exemplify the importance of considering forest microclimates to understand variation in biodiversity and ecosystem functions across forest landscapes. Next, we explain how macroclimate warming (of the free atmosphere) can affect microclimates, and vice versa, via interactions with land-use changes across different biomes. Finally, we perform a priority ranking of future research avenues at the interface of microclimate ecology and global change biology, with a specific focus on three key themes: (1) disentangling the abiotic and biotic drivers and feedbacks of forest microclimates; (2) global and regional mapping and predictions of forest microclimates; and (3) the impacts of microclimate on forest biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in the face of climate change. The availability of microclimatic data will significantly increase in the coming decades, characterizing climate variability at unprecedented spatial and temporal scales relevant to biological processes in forests. This will revolutionize our understanding of the dynamics, drivers and implications of forest microclimates on biodiversity and ecological functions, and the impacts of global changes. The reaction of VO(acac)2 (acac(-) = acetyl acetonate) with tripodal glycine bisphenol H3L(1) under an ambient atmosphere yields a hexacoordinated vanadium(iv) complex [V(acac)(L(1))] (1). The corresponding reactions with tripodal 2-propanolamine bisphenol H3L(2) and potentially pentadentate ethoxyethanolamine bisphenol H3L(3) lead to the oxidation of the metal centre and formation of mononuclear oxovanadium(v) complexes [VO(L(2))] (2) and [VO(L(3))] (3), respectively. Alternatively, these latter two complexes can be prepared using VOSO4·5H2O or VO(OPr)3 as a precursor. The CV of 1 in an ACN solution shows a reversible one-electron process at E1/2 = +1.18 V, whereas 2 and 3 have an irreversible redox response at -1.6 V and -1.2 V, respectively. Complexes 2 and 3 show moderate activity in the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene by tert-BuOOH at 50 °C.
