The IAE machine is designed as a closed-loop power system with two sets of gears, one consisting of the two test gears and the other the two gears closing the loop. Oil is fed to each gear pair by a separate oil pump and circulating system. The oil pump output can be adjusted from 0 to 3 liters/min. Test oil is fed to the contact zone of the gears through a nozzle with a diameter of 0.8 mm. A filter is installed in the lubrication system to remove wear products from the oil during the test.

In connection with the need for rational utilization of petroleum products, an extensive search is being made for methods to lower the consumption of fuel in internal combustion engines. In this sea=ch, along with an examination of organizational measures, major attention is being given to design developments aimed at improving engine efficiencies [1-4]o One of the possible means for improvement of efficiency is a reduction of the frictional power loss, as this would automatically lower the fuel consumption. Energy calculations indicate that it is theoretically possible to obtain an 8% fuel saving by curtailing the frictional energy losses [5, 6]o According to [3], depending on the type of engine and its operating conditions, this theoretically possible fuel saving may even be as much as 10-15%o

A method for use in predicting the corrosion protection life of transmission components based on the establishment of a correlation between the level of transmission oil protective properties as determined under laboratory conditions and protective life of the component is proposed. Relationships that can be used to predict the storage life of automotive vehicle transmission components are obtained from calculations. Graphs are plotted for prediction of storage life of automotive vehicle transmission components under various conditions. The method developed here can also be used in formulating requirements for the level of protective properties of new oils or corrosion inhibitors.
