The Working Group on Fisheries Benthic Impact and Trade-offs (WGFBIT) develops methods and performs assessments to evaluate benthic impact from fisheries at regional scale, while con- sidering fisheries and seabed impact trade-offs. In this report, new fishery benthic impact assessments (ToR A) are shown out for several sub- regions in (French Mediterranean, Celtic Seas). For other regions, updates of the whole assess- ment or specific steps only were presented. To further standardise the different components of the WGFBIT approach across all (sub-)re- gional assessments, a more detail overview of those components was compiled. These compo- nents were slightly different among those regions, related to variation in data availability, envi- ronmental characteristics and implementation possibilities among the (sub-)regions. In WGFBIT, assessments are sometimes based on trawl or grab data, which are sampling differ- ent components of the seafloor ecosystem and can have consequences on the created sensitivity layer. Therefore, there is looked in more detail how the sensitivity outcome (and layers) can dif- fer due to the use of benthic data gathered with different gears (grab/core, trawl or video). The preliminary comparability analyses are performed on different levels: (1) based on co-located sampling; (2) comparing sensitivity maps of the (sub-) area, based on different gears. There were differences observed in longevity distribution at locations sampled with different gears and dif- ferences in data and models lead also to differences in the sensitivity layers. The WGFBIT seafloor assessment framework is not the only way to assess benthic impacts from physical disturbance. A discussion session was held on how the future workflow on advice that ICES WGFBIT assessment contribute to, will be organized. Marine sediments harbour significant levels of biodiversity that play a key role in ecosystem functions and services such as biogeochemical cycling, carbon storage and the regulation of cli- mate. Through the removal of fauna, changes in physico-chemical nature and resuspension of sediment, bottom trawling may result in significant changes in the ecosystem functioning of shelf seas. An assumption of the current PD model is that high community biomass implies higher ecosystem functioning. However, total community biomass does not necessarily reflect changes in species and functional trait composition which play a key role in regulating ecosystem func- tions. ToR D is working on an improved understanding of the link between species functional effect traits and proxies and processes for specific ecosystem functions to improve our ability to predict the impact of fishing disturbance on benthic ecosystem functioning more accurately. Links between species traits and biogeochemical parameters and the impact of trawling on these links are being explored using multivariate ordination analyses using different fauna and bioge- ochemical datasets collected in the North Sea, Celtic Sea, Kattegat, Baltic Sea and the eastern Mediterranean. Changes due to trawling in the trajectories of species densities over time and the concurrent changes in the bioturbation and bioirrigation potential of communities are being modelled using a combination of data-driven mechanistic model and a biogeochemical model. Les données issues des comptages de zooplancton gélatineux effectués lors des campagnes halieutiques sont des données quantitatives mais non standardisées (i.e. non comparables d’une campagne à l’autre, ou d’un trait à l’autre). Cette note technique explore les questionnements méthodologiques permettant la standardisation et la comparaison de ces données et présente une proposition de méthode d’estimation de l’abondance du zooplancton gélatineux à partir de captures par chalutage. Ce travail fait suite aux réflexions antérieures menées dans le cadre de la DCSMM par Sandrine Vaz, Fabien Morandeau, Fabien Lombard et Jacques Sacchi concernant l’exploitation des données de zooplancton gélatineux acquises par chalutage (Aubert et al. 2018 ; Lheureux et al. 2022). Ces travaux ont été poursuivis dans le cadre du projet R&D GELATINE et les principales propositions et résultats sont discutés ici au regard des données existantes (types de chaluts, distance de chalutage et référentiel utilisé, zone filtrante du chalut).

The Mediterranean continental shelf’s benthic habitats have been subjected to high-intensity bottom trawling for decades. This has resulted in benthic biodiversity erosion and degraded seabed conditions. The ICES Working Group on Fisheries Benthic Impact and Trade-offs (WGFBIT) has developed an assessment framework, based on the life history trait longevity, to evaluate the benthic impact from fisheries at regional scale. In this study, the framework is applied to the French Mediterranean. First, we collated Mediterranean longevity databases and developed a common database based on fuzzy coding of longevity classes to be applied to the French data (by-catch benthic invertebrates data resulting from scientific bottom trawl monitoring surveys). This database was then used to associate existing benthic biomass data with longevity classes. Then, a multinomial GLMM was fitted, linking biomass per longevity class to environmental predictors. Next, we used this model to predict the average benthic community longevity value under reference conditions as a proxy of benthic sensitivity. We predicted more sensitive habitats in upper/lower bathyal sediment, and less sensitive habitats in the more shallow, muddy sediments. Last, the predicted longevity curve parameters were used to estimate local carrying capacity and benthic vulnerability (expressed as Relative Benthic State) based on known fixed depletion rates, the observed biomass and abrasion rate. In agreement with previous studies, our Relative Benthic State estimate suggested highly impacted area’s close to the coast in the Gulf of Lion, and lowest impacted habitats around Corsica. Many uncertainties remain and this first preliminary application will need to be further developed and validated in the future.

VIII International Symposium on Marine Sciences, 6-8 July 2022, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, España, Increasing impacts of both fisheries and climate change have resulted in changes in the structure, functioning and related ecological metrics of marine communities. A recurrent observation is the rise of cephalopods as fish communities recede. The reason behind this phenomenon is most likely linked with the removal of main predators and competitors by fishing. However, the consequences of climate change (variations in primary production, changes in stratification, and sea warming, among others) may also have an influence due to the high environmental sensitivity and plasticity of cephalopods. Here we aim to unveil the effects of different drivers in the cephalopod community of the Western Mediterranean Sea as well as its differential role in space. We combine several ecological indicators offering a wide range of information about biodiversity, production, trophic structure and relative contribution of prey and predators and relate them with environmental and fisheries drivers of change. The ecological indicators are calculated using data from the MEDITS trawling survey in the region (from the Alboran Sea to the Gulf of Lion) from 2013 to 2019. Our results highlight the response of ecological indicators to several drivers of change and the spatial differences in cephalopod communities with, for instance, higher richness and proportion of predator cephalopods in areas associated to higher SST and fishing effort. Overall, the effect of the environment is greater than the effect of other variables; such results may highlight that under foreseeing scenarios of climate change cephalopods could continue to increase due to increases in sea warming, This study was partially funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 817578 (TRIATLAS) and No 869300 (FutureMARES). Les Objectifs Environnementaux (OE) sont des outils de la mise en œuvre de la Directive Cadre Stratégie pour le Milieu Marin (DCSMM). Ils doivent permettre de guider l’action publique et de prioriser les moyens d’intervention qui seront proposés à travers le Programme de Mesures pour atteindre le bon état écologique. Le présent rapport décrit la méthode d’évaluation des indicateurs de l’objectif environnemental D01-HB-OE10 relatif au descripteur 1 (biodiversité) appliqué aux habitats benthiques (HB). Les finalités de l’OE10 sont d’éviter l’abrasion et l’étouffement des zones les plus représentatives des habitats profonds (Ecosystèmes Marins Vulnérables) et de réduire l’abrasion des structures géomorphologiques particulières. Cet OE compte cinq indicateurs. Le présent rapport décrit les méthodes d’évaluation des indicateurs 1, 2 et 4 relatifs à l’abrasion par les arts de pêches trainants sur les écosystèmes marins vulnérables et les structures géomorphologiques particulières.

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requires EU Member States to achieve and maintain good environmental status (GES) across their marine waters. WKBENTH3 convened as a hybrid meeting to evaluate benthic assessment methods and indicators for their potential to meet the criteria described under the MSFD Descriptor 6 (seabed integrity). They evaluated a suite of indicator methods, proposed by participants. Those included five indicator methods de-scribing the ‘Condition of the Benthic Habitat’, primarily linked to D6C5, and six indicator meth-ods for ‘Physical Disturbance on Benthic Habitats’, primarily linked to D6C3. Variants of some of the indicators as well as some other commonly used diversity indices were also assessed. A common dataset with broad regional representation was used to compare and contrast indi-cator performance with 17 benthic invertebrate datasets drawn from a range of pressure gradi-ents (14 over gradients of commercial bottom trawling intensity, 2 over gradients of eutrophica-tion and 1 over a pollution gradient). A meta-analysis of the mean response to trawling across all locations showed that most indicators had, on average, declined at the high trawl impact rel-ative to the baseline and a significant effect of trawling was detected for the indicators Commu-nity Biomass, Species Richness, Fraction of long-lived species, Median longevity, Fraction of sen-tinel species - SoS, Relative Margalef diversity index DM’, Shannon Index and Inverse Simpson. The complementarity of the different indices was computed using Spearman correlation coeffi-cients between each of the indices for all gradients, ordering indicators with Ward’s hierarchical clustering. One of the key findings was the identification of four groups of indices that showed clear patterns of association. Considering the link of indicators to different benthic community properties, WKBENTH3 proposed that the assessment of D6 should be carried out selecting a number of indicators drawn from different cluster groups to ensure that components of diver-sity, species sensitivity and abundance (density and/or biomass – or other proxy linked to benthic habitat functioning) are addressed. WKBENTH3 further ranked model-based benthic sensitivity and impact outputs across broad habitat types (BHTs) in eight different subdivisions in order to contrast indicator responses. The ranking showed a broad congruence, however, every subdivision had variation in ranking of BHTs among indicator methods. Further work is needed to determine the cause of those discrep-ancies and to look more closely at the values and the response curves generated. WKBENTH3 developed a worked example of how to estimate thresholds for GES based on the approach of ‘detectable change’. The approach was applied to each of the different pressure gra-dients and to muddy sand habitats. It was not able to estimate thresholds for all gradients da-tasets as the confidence intervals around some relationships were very wide. Experts highlighted that the assessment of seabed integrity needs to ensure that cross-regional, regional, national and local scale assessments can “talk” to each other and that they are complementarity in terms of what aspects of the ecosystem the respective indicators are capturing and what pressure they are tracking (linked to manageable human activity). The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requires Member States to achieve good environmental status (GES) across their marine waters. The EU have requested ICES to advise on methods for assessing adverse effects on seabed habitats, through selection of relevant indicators for the assessment of benthic habitats and seafloor integrity and associated threshold values for GES in relation to Descriptor 6 – Seabed integrity under the MFSD. Two sets of criteria were developed to evaluate indicators and thresholds respectively for evaluation of suitability for assessing GES. 16 indicator and 12 threshold criteria were compiled and weighted by importance. The criteria were designed for evaluation at a subregional or regional level. The scoring for these criteria is meant as a guidance when choosing indicators and thresholds, so failure to meet one criterion will not necessarily prevent the use of the indicator or thresh-old in an assessment. The framework was evaluated for 6 indicators and for 11 methods for setting thresholds. The criteria were found to be useful for evaluation both indicators and thresholds. The process works most consistently when there are experts in the group on both the criteria themselves and on the indicators and thresholds. The MFSD Descriptor 6 determination of GES needs both a quality threshold (when are seabed habitats in a good state in a specific location) and an extent threshold (proportion of the assessment area that needs to have seabed habitats in good state). Eleven different methods for setting thresholds were identified, of which more are suitable for setting quality than for extent thresholds. Preferred methods identified an ecologically-motivated difference between a good and de-graded state, rather than another transition. Quality thresholds based on the lower boundary of the range of natural variation were considered most promising. This approach can be used for most, but not all, indicators. The WK collated a standardized dataset to test the specificity, sensitivity and/or responsiveness of sampling-based benthic indicators to pressure gradients for evaluation by WKBENTH3. Risk-based methods will be evaluated as maps and by scored sensitivity and impact score per MSFD habitat type and subdivision. Participants provided input into the selection of indicators for the compilation of indicators. A template was developed for documenting the characteristics of each indicator to facilitate the evaluation of the indicators. ICES Published Non Refereed

In this report, new fishery benthic impact assessments are carried out for several sub-regions in the Mediterranean (Greek waters, South Adriatic Sea, Sicily waters). For other regions, updates of the whole assessment or specific steps only were presented. A standard advice sheet for the regional benthic assessments, intended as input to the next generation of the ICES Ecosystem and Fisheries Overviews, was finalised and compiled for some regions as example (Greek wa-ters, Baltic Sea). A validation of the longevity relationships using new data was executed for the Kattegat area and the Southern North Sea. In relation to the methodology, some recommenda-tions were formulated concerning the update on depletion rates, the use of epifauna- or infauna-based data, guidance on which set of epibenthic species to include and the time scale for setting the average swept-area-ratio (SAR) used in model fitting and assessment. A benchmarking pro-cess comparing available benthic impact assessment approaches for MSFD descriptor 6 “Seafloor integrity” is needed, as the WGFBIT approach (relative benthic state) is not the only way to assess benthic impacts from physical disturbances. A start was made to explore how to incorporate more explicitly ecosystem functioning in to the WGFBIT seafloor assessment methodology. An improved understanding of the relationships between total community biomass and ecosystem functioning may assist in setting acceptable thresholds for ecosystem impacts from trawling. Furthermore, an improved understanding of the link between species functional effect traits and proxies and processes for specific ecosystem functions could help increase our ability to predict the impact of fishing disturbance on benthic ecosystem functioning more accurately. The ecosys-tem function we focus on is the biogeochemical cycling of organic matter. Two approaches were discussed (i) Biological traits approach focusing on the linkage between biological traits and eco-system functions and (ii) biogeochemical modelling approach using the established the OMEXDIA model. Ce rapport d��crit les donn��es sources et les m��thodes de calcul d���un estimateur de l���abrasion superficielle des fonds marins par les arts de p��che trainants en France m��tropolitaine. Le d��veloppement de l���estimateur s���inscrit dans la mise en ��uvre de la Directive Cadre Strat��gie pour le Milieu Marin (DCSMM) afin de renseigner en particulier les indicateurs du bon ��tat ��cologique des habitats benthiques et de l���int��grit�� des fonds marins.

Dans le cadre du sixième appel d'offres (AO6) pour l'éolien en mer en France, Ifremer réalise l’étude pour identifier les zones de moindre contrainte pour les espèces halieutiques (poissons, mollusques, crustacés, invertébrés benthiques sensibles) dans le Golfe du Lion à la demande de la Direction Générale de l'Energie et du Climat (Ministère de la Transition Ecologique et Solidaire). La méthodologie pour calculer le risque d’effet a été adaptée à partir de la méthode proposée pour l’étude des compartiments granulats et avifaune au sud de la Bretagne afin de maintenir une similitude de concepts et de terminologies entre les différents appels d’offres. Les données des campagnes scientifiques MEDITS et PELMED ont été utilisées dans un premier temps pour créer des cartes de distribution (densité ou biomasse). Les cartes de distribution ont ensuite permis de calculer la représentativité de chaque espèce. Les données de débarquements géolocalisés de pêche ont également été utilisées pour calculer la représentativité des espèces. A partir de ces représentativités, de la vulnérabilité (statut de protection ou état du stock) et de la distribution des espèces, des cartes d’enjeu ont pu être créées. L’enjeu couplé à la sensibilité (effets biologiques potentiels de l’éolien flottant) des espèces a servi à calculer le risque d’effet. Le risque d’effet global (toutes espèces confondues) est très fort dans la partie ouest du Golfe du Lion : dans la macrozone A, en face de Port-la-Nouvelle, dans l’extrémité ouest de la macrozone B ; et dans la partie nord de la macrozone C. Le risque d’effet est faible au sud des macrozones et au large du Golfe du Lion. L’incertitude associée au risque d’effet a été évalué avec une technique de ré-échantillonnage appelée bootstrapping.

Designing conservation networks requires a well-structured framework for achieving essential objectives such as connectivity, replication or viability, and for considering local management and socioeconomic stakes. Although systematic conservation planning (SCP) approaches are increasingly used to inform such networks, their application remains challenging in large and poorly researched areas. This is especially the case in the deep sea, where SCP has rarely been applied, although growing awareness of the vulnerability of deep-sea ecosystems urges the implementation of conservation measures from local to international levels. This study aims to structure and evaluate a framework for SCP applicable to the deep sea, focusing on the identification of conservation priority networks for vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs), such as cold-water coral reefs, sponge grounds, or hydrothermal vents, and for key demersal fish species. Based on multi-objective prioritization, different conservation scenarios were investigated, allowing the impact of key elements such as connectivity and conservation cost to be evaluated. Our results show that continental margin slopes, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and deeper areas of large and productive shelves housing fishing grounds appeared as crucial zones for preserving the deep-sea biodiversity of the North Atlantic, and within the limitations imposed by the data available, of the Mediterranean. Using biologically-informed connectivity led to a more continuous and denser conservation network, without increasing the network size. Even when minimizing the overlap with socioeconomic activities, the inclusion of exploited areas was necessary to fulfil conservation objectives. Such areas included continental shelf fishing grounds for demersal fish species, and areas covered by deep-sea mining exploration contracts for hydrothermal vent communities. Covering 17% of the study area and protecting 55% of each feature on average, the identified priority network held a high conservation potential. However, these areas still suffer from poor protection, with 30% of them benefiting from some form of recognition and 11% only from protection against trawling. Integrating them into current marine spatial planning (MSP) discussions could foster the implementation of a basin-scale conservation network for the deep sea. Dans le cadre de la mise en œuvre du programme de surveillance de la directive cadre stratégie pour le milieu marin (DCSMM), le suivi des poissons et céphalopodes démersaux des milieux meubles côtiers a été jugé prioritaire. Pour ce faire, une série de campagnes halieutiques récurrentes doit être déployée dans les nourriceries côtières, constituant des habitats essentiels pour de nombreuses espèces marines. La caractérisation de l’état écologique des peuplements et l’étude de la fonctionnalité des habitats de nourriceries s’avèrent nécessaires au calcul des indicateurs du Bon Etat Ecologique requis par la DCSMM et primordiales pour la mise en place de mesures de gestion écosystémique garantissant des usages durables. Sur la façade méditerranéenne, une première mission explorant la faisabilité de ce suivi a été réalisée avec succès dans le golfe du Lion en 2018. La campagne Nourmed 2019 augure de la mise en place d’une série de campagnes et s'inscrit donc dans le dispositif de surveillance des « Poissons-céphalopodes ». Le présent rapport décrit les principaux objectifs et résultats acquis en 2019. Il confirme la faisabilité de la mise en place de ce suivi, et calcule l’abondance, la biomasse et la diversité de trois guildes : les poissons, les céphalopodes et les autres invertébrés. Une série d’espèces bien représentées dans les captures sont listés et pour certaines, un spectre de taille et une cartographie de leurs abondances et biomasses ont été produits. Ces analyses représentent les premiers jalons du calcul des indicateurs de la DCSMM concernés et illustrent que les données recueillies permettront sans aucun doute leurs calculs. Cependant la méconnaissance de la variabilité naturelle du milieu et des biotopes associés ainsi que la définition des valeurs seuil du bon état écologique impose de constituer une série temporelle suffisamment longue et donc, de poursuivre ce suivi.

Dans le Golfe du Lion, le mauvais état des stocks de petits pélagiques a entrainé à partir de 2009 un report de l’activité chalutière pélagique vers les pêcheries démersales. Cette augmentation de la pression de pêche sur les espèces démersales ne facilite pas l’amélioration de l’état de la population de merlu dont le niveau d'exploitation est actuellement 12 fois supérieur au niveau estimé comme durable. En 2018, de nouvelles mesures complémentaires ont été proposées (réduction de l’effort de pêche, fermeture de zones) afin d’assurer un retour au Rendement Maximum Durable du merlu d’ici 2020. Cependant à ce jour les conséquences de ces mesures de gestion sur la pêcherie sont difficilement prévisibles. Une approche basée sur un simulateur de dynamique de stock et de flottilles (ISIS-FISH) permet d’étudier l’effet de ces différentes propositions sur la dynamique du merlu et sur la valeur des captures des autres espèces qui ont servi de proxy à la viabilité de la pêcherie. Les effets des scénarios ont été analysés sur la base de la biomasse de Merlu, les captures de Merlu par pays et les revenus des flottilles françaises à court terme (1 an après la mise en place du scénario) et à moyen terme (5 ans après la mise en place du scénario). Il en ressort que les scénarios de fermeture de zones se démarquent des scenarios de réduction d’effort dans leur incapacité à apporter conjointement un gain économique et biologique, l’amélioration de l’un conduisant systématiquement à la perte de l’autre. Certains scénarios de fermetures de zones entrainent des pertes en revenus pour les flottilles françaises mais des gains pour certaines flottilles espagnoles (les palangriers). En outre, les reports d’effort de pêche des chalutiers lors des fermetures de zones augmentent la compétition pour l’accès à la population de merlu dans des zones de pêche des fileyeurs induisant des pertes de revenus pour ce segment de flottille. Les scénarios de réduction d’effort se démarquent des autres scenarios par leur capacité à provoquer des gains biologiques et économiques pour toutes les flottilles. Ils présentent en plus l’avantage d’être plus robustes aux incertitudes testées. L’ensemble de ces résultats sont à interpréter conditionnellement aux hypothèses faites dans le modèle comme celle d’un recrutement constant (pas de relation stockrecrutement ni de variabilité interannuelle aléatoire) et une stabilité des stratégies de pêche (pas de changement de métiers par rapport à 2017) sur les 5 années de simulation 2020-2024.

The large-scale distribution pattern of megafauna communities along the Mediterranean middle slope was explored. The study was conducted between 500 and 800 m depth where deep-water fishery occurs. Although community studies carried out deeper than 500 m are partly available for some geographic areas, few large-scale comparative studies have been carried out. Within the framework of the MEDITS survey programme, we compared the megafauna community structure in ten geographical sub-areas (GSAs) along the Mediterranean coasts. Additionally, the spatial distribution of fishing was analysed using vessel monitoring by satellite information. Overall, the community showed a significant difference between sub-areas, with a decreasing eastward pattern in abundance and biomass. Longitude was the main factor explaining variation among sub-areas (by generalized additive models). However, we found a region which did not follow the general pattern. GSA 6 (northern Spain) showed significantly lower abundance and a different composition structure to the adjacent areas. The decrease in community descriptors (i.e. abundance and biomass) in this area is probably a symptom of population changes induced by intense fishery exploitation. Overall, a combination of environmental variables and human-induced impacts appears to influence the bentho-pelagic communities along the slope areas of the Mediterranean., En este estudio se describe la estructura y patrones de distribución de la comunidad de megafauna que habita en el margen continental medio a lo largo del Mediterráneo. El estudio se realizó entre los 500 y 800 m, coincidiendo espacialmente con las pesquerías de profundidad. A pesar de que se conoce parcialmente la estructura de las comunidades que habitan por debajo de 500 m, existe la necesidad de estudiar estas comunidades a una escala espacial más amplia. Dentro del marco del proyecto internacional MEDITS, se comparó la estructura de las comunidades en diez sub-áreas geográficas (GSAs) a lo largo de las costas mediterráneas. Además se analizó la distribución espacial del esfuerzo pesquero utilizando la información de los datos de seguimiento de buques. En general los resultados mostraron diferencias significativas entre subáreas mostrando un patrón decreciente en los valores de biomasa hacia el este, siendo la longitud el principal factor explicativo del modelo de distribución (GAMs). Sin embargo, encontramos una subárea que no seguía el patrón general, la GSA6 (norte de España). La GSA6 mostró una biomasa y estructura de la comunidad diferente a las áreas adyacentes. La disminución de la biomasa en esta área parece ser un síntoma de los cambios poblaciones causados por la elevada intensidad de pesca en la zona. Los resultados sugieren que la distribución y estructura de las comunidades bento-pelágicas parecen estar moduladas por la combinación de las variables ambientales y los impactos producidos por la actividad humana.

Coastal Mediterranean lagoons are often defined as homogeneous ecosystems that home many migratory and sedentary species. They also host strong salinity gradients, depth variation and very diverse plant communities, which create small-scale heterogeneity within lagoons. This is why each lagoon must be described as an entity by itself made up of a multitude of homogeneous features, called habitats, which support specific ecological functions for organisms (nursery, feeding, protection against predators...). Although many studies have resulted in collecting high numbers of physical, chemical and biological data in coastal Mediterranean lagoons, there is currently a lack of knowledge of the spatial distribution of these habitats. In our project, we (1) develop a new habitat classification adapted to coastal Mediterranean lagoons and in coherence with EUNIS system (European Nature Information System), (2) map those habitats in French coastal Mediterranean lagoons, and (3) identify and estimate their surface. Based on physical, chemical and biological data collected from 36 permanent French Mediterranean lagoons since the 2000s, we elaborate for the first time a unique and homogeneous habitat classification based on six hierarchical levels: salinity, substrate, light availability, hydrodynamics, trophic state and biology. A total of 224 habitats were mapped in all French coastal Mediterranean lagoons, including 1 to 24 different habitats per lagoon. This habitat mapping (1:100,000 scale) highlights the mosaic of habitats hosted by French coastal Mediterranean lagoons considered until now as relatively homogeneous. The integration of this new knowledge now makes it possible to have tools to help define spatial sampling strategies, management and planning at local and regional scales. The structural definition of these habitats should be a first step towards defining functional habitats for the organisms inhabiting these lagoons., Les lagunes côtières méditerranéennes sont souvent définies comme des écosystèmes homogènes qui abritent de nombreuses espèces migratrices et sédentaires. Ils abritent pourtant de forts gradients de salinité, des variations de profondeur et des communautés végétales très diverses, qui créent une hétérogénéité à petite échelle au sein des lagunes. C'est pourquoi chaque lagune doit être décrite comme une entité à elle seule composée d'une multitude de caractéristiques homogènes, appelées habitats, qui soutiennent des fonctions écologiques spécifiques aux organismes (nurserie, alimentation, protection contre les prédateurs ...). Bien que de nombreuses études aient abouti à la collecte d'un grand nombre de données physiques, chimiques et biologiques dans les lagunes côtières méditerranéennes, il existe actuellement un manque de connaissances sur la répartition spatiale de ces habitats. Dans notre projet, (1) nous développons une nouvelle classification des habitats adaptée aux lagunes côtières méditerranéennes cohérent avec le système EUNIS (European Nature Information System), (2) nous cartographions ces habitats dans les lagunes côtières méditerranéennes françaises, et (3) nous identifions et estimons leur surface. Sur la base des données physiques, chimiques et biologiques collectées dans 36 lagunes méditerranéennes permanentes françaises depuis les années 2000, nous avons élaboré pour la première fois une classification unique et homogène de l'habitat basée sur six niveaux hiérarchiques: salinité, substrat, disponibilité de la lumière, hydrodynamique, état trophique et biologie. Au total, 224 habitats ont été cartographiés dans l'ensemble des lagunes méditerranéennes côtières françaises, dont 1 à 24 habitats différents par lagune. Cette cartographie des habitats (échelle 1: 100 000) met en évidence la mosaïque des habitats exisants au sein des lagunes côtières méditerranéennes françaises considérées jusqu'à présent comme relativement homogènes. L'intégration de ces nouvelles connaissances permet désormais de disposer d'outils pour définir des stratégies d'échantillonnage spatial, de gestion et de planification à l'échelle locale et régionale. La définition structurelle de ces habitats devrait être un premier pas vers la définition d'habitats fonctionnels pour les organismes habitant ces lagunes.

Améliorer la gestion des ressources marines est donc un impératif au maintien des entreprises de pêche, c’est pourquoi les pêcheurs chalutiers du golfe du Lion ont lancé l’initiative du projet GALION pour permettre de définir de nouveaux modes de gestion pour cette pêcherie. Le projet intègre plusieurs phases de collecte de données en mer dans le cadre d’un partenariat entre scientifiques, pêcheurs et économistes. Plusieurs actions sont menées au cours des trois années du projet : 1. Cartographier la distribution des captures et rejets. 2. Définir des habitats sensibles ou à risque. 3. Analyser la sélectivité des engins de pêche et leur impact économique. 4. Proposer des stratégies de pêche limitant les rejets. Ainsi le projet GALION vise à fournir aux pêcheurs une aide à la décision pour la meilleure stratégie de pêche à adopter. Ce projet est porté par l’AMOP, en partenariat avec l’Ifremer, le projet DISCARDLESS, le Cépralmar, Capacités Mer et SEANEO. Il a également bénéficié des soutiens financiers de l’association France Filière Pêche, de la Région Occitanie, de la Région Provence Alpes Côtes d’Azur, du Conseil Départemental du Gard et du Conseil Départemental de l’Hérault.
