Bamboos are perennial woody grasses that display an enigmatic mix of traits. Bamboo is highly shade intolerant like early‐successional trees. Without secondary xylem, bamboos cannot continue to grow once they reach a maximum height or replace xylem damaged by hydraulic stress and must instead replace each stem after a few years using vegetative propagation via rhizomes. These traits of bamboo would appear to make them inferior to trees in competition for both light and water in all but early‐successional wet locations. However, some species competitively exclude trees and form persistent monodominant stands across large areas in tropical and temperate forests, including areas that are not mesic. Moreover, bamboo paradoxically postpones seed production for decades to over a century, and then flowers semelparously and dies synchronously. The delayed reproduction appears to be inconsistent with an early‐successional strategy to colonize disturbed areas as soon as they form, while the simultaneous death over large areas appears to be inconsistent with a late‐successional strategy to gain and hold space. Bamboo exhibits great diversity in its growth form and life histories along the tropical‐temperate geographical cline, with tropical bamboo being taller with shorter rhizome lengths and flowering interval lengths than temperate bamboo. We hypothesize that all of the above characteristics of bamboo are essential elements of competitive strategies to arrest succession in a lineage that lacks secondary xylem. To develop this Arrested Succession Hypothesis, we construct mathematical models of competition for recently disturbed areas between a tree species and a species with bamboo's enigmatic characteristics. We modeled the growth of bamboo genetic individuals from seedlings after seed germination to clonal culms at mass flowering and then placed these individuals in competition with one another and with trees in simple models of competition for light. Results explain how bamboo's traits allow it to persist in forests late in succession despite its hydraulic disadvantages, and form monodominant stands in the temperate zone, but not in tropical forests. They explain why bamboo is semelparous with synchronized reproduction, and why maximum culm size and age, reproductive interval, and rhizome length differ between the tropics and the temperate zone. Adventitious root (AR) formation is one of the most important developmental processes in vegetative propagation. Although genotypic differences in rose rooting ability are well known, the causal factors are not well understood. The rooting of two contrasting genotypes, 'Herzogin Friederike' and 'Mariatheresia', was compared following a multiscale approach. Using magnetic resonance imaging, we non-invasively monitored the inner structure of stem cuttings during initiation and progression of AR formation for the first time. Spatially resolved Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy characterized the chemical composition of the tissues involved in AR formation. The results were validated through light microscopy and complemented by immunolabelling. The outcome demonstrated similarity of both genotypes in root primordia formation, which did not result in root protrusion through the shoot cortex in the difficult-to-root genotype 'Mariatheresia'. The biochemical composition of the contrasting genotypes highlighted main differences in cell wall-associated components. Further spectroscopic analysis of 15 contrasting rose genotypes confirmed the biochemical differences between easy- and difficult-to-root groups. Collectively, our data indicate that it is not the lack of root primordia limiting AR formation in these rose genotypes, but the firmness of the outer stem tissue and/or cell wall modifications that pose a mechanical barrier and prevent root extension and protrusion. Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) is a causal agent of diseases that have challenged the global citrus production for more than a century. The disease named ‘tristeza’, which means ‘sadness’ in Portuguese and Spanish, has spread by aphids and vegetative propagation, resulting in costly pandemics that reshaped the world citrus production by forcing the adaption of disease‐tolerant rootstocks. Furthermore, management of the second major CTV‐induced disease, stem pitting, became a unique example of the use of cross‐protection on a large nationwide scale, allowing many citrus growing regions to control the disease that could not be managed through horticultural practices. The information gathered in this review commemorates a hundred years of research on the virus and the respective diseases, which began with classical horticultural approaches and advanced toward the cutting‐edge molecular biology studies. In this regard, it is proper to mention that CTV research greatly benefited from close international collaboration between research institutions and scientists from the affected and nonaffected citrus areas. Moreover, despite the considerable initial losses caused by tristeza, the world's fresh fruit and juice concentrate citrus industries reemerged as highly productive following the research advancements, a situation that changed throughout Florida and Brazil in the past two decades or so with the outbreak of the devastating citrus greening (Huanglongbing) bacterial disease. This review encompasses past and recent advances in the CTV research positioning the citrus‐CTV pathosystem as a pivotal model system for investigating virus interactions with perennial woody hosts. The review will also serve as an updated version of the respective section on CTV in the Description of Plant Viruses that the Association of Applied Biologists manages. We dedicated this review to the 85th Birthday celebration of Prof. Moshe Bar‐Joseph, a world‐renowned plant pathologist whose half‐a‐century‐long career devoted to citrus diseases yielded many important, pioneering discoveries on CTV and other closteroviruses. Many of those are highlighted in this review. Prof. Bar‐Joseph retired from the Volcani Center, Agricultural Research Organization in Israel several years ago, yet he continues to be actively engaged in research and provides his expertise to citrus pathologists around the world in the present days. Pelargoniums cultivated for ornamental purposes rely on efficient vegetative propagation. This study researched applicability of chlorophyll fluorescence for validating the physiological conditions of pelargonium cuttings. Results indicated a correlation between the chlorophyll fluorescence and rooting potential. The ET0/RC values were negatively correlated with the rooting efficiency between the varieties and the duration of cold storage. A negative correlation was observed between OJIP parameters, representing energy flow in thylakoids, and chlorophyll content in cuttings with lower nutritional status. The phenomenological energy fluxes for leaf cross-sections and the number of active PSII reaction centers in the not-excited state (RC/CS0) increase with raised chlorophyll concentration. This imply the influence of rooting ability on the demand for photoassimilates in pelargonium cuttings, which can be detected early on through chlorophyll fluorescence analysis but not chlorophyll content measurements. Chlorophyll fluorescence evaluation, along with specific OJIP test parameters such as the performance indices PIABS and PItotal, prove useful for predicting rooting efficiency in relation to the nutritional status of cuttings, suggesting the effects of cuttings cold storage and discerning varietal differences in rooting. This study establishes the pragmatic application of chlorophyll fluorescence assessment for elucidating the physiological intricacies of pelargonium cuttings and factors influencing rooting efficiency. Almost all pineapple crops in Brazil are grown using the cultivar Perola. This scenario can be changed through the development of new cultivars with better fruit quality and resistance. The novel approach of the present study was to select pineapple clones that combine both resistance to fusariosis and characteristics related to plant and fruit quality as alternatives to the traditional cultivar Perola. Therefore, the objectives of this work were to estimate genetic parameters and select clones through the REML/BLUP methodology, based on morpho-agronomic characteristics and resistance to fusariosis. Thus, a selection index was used for quantitative characteristics and, later, for qualitative characteristics, such as fruit quality, presence or absence of leaf spines, and resistance to fusariosis. Significant differences were found for most variables, denoting genetic variability among the evaluated clones. Fruit weight with and without crown and D-leaf length presented the highest heritability estimates (above 50%); however, fruit length, mean fruit diameter, soluble solids, titratable acidity, plant height, and number of active leaves presented the lowest heritability estimates due to greater residual variances. Characteristics related to plant and fruit development are strongly affected by the environment and may result in phenotypic changes. Dominance variance was higher than additive variance, which enables the obtaining of heterosis through vegetative propagation. Eleven out of the 20 superior selected clones presented absence of leaf spines and multiple crowns, higher fruit weight and soluble solids content, and desirable fruit shape and pulp color; seven of them showed resistance to fusariosis, making them suitable for final testing for release as new cultivars. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between Castanea sativa Mill. and Castanea crenata Siebold & Zucc. × Castanea sativa Mill. in rooting ability in relation to endogenous levels of auxin, auxin cofactors and inhibitors that influence rooting success. Leafy cuttings of the two commercial cultivars 'Marsol' and 'Maraval' (Castanea crenata × Castanea sativa) and the native accession 'Kozjak' (Castanea sativa) were analyzed. Endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) concentration was assessed at the beginning of propagation (day 0); in addition, strigolactones, flavonoids, rooting ability and quality were assessed 120 days after. The concentration of endogenous IAA in 'Maraval' (324.34 ± 28.66 ng g−1) and 'Marsol' (251.60 ± 35.44 ng g−1) was significantly higher than in 'Kozjak' (112.87 ± 35.44 ng g−1). The best rooting result was observed with the genotypes 'Maraval' (100.00 ± 0.00%) and 'Marsol' (90.48 ± 6.15%). A significantly lower strigol concentration was observed in the roots of 'Maraval' (75.54 ± 17.93 ng g−1) compared with other genotypes. The total flavonoid concentration in 'Maraval' was significantly higher (2794.99 ± 187.13 μg g−1) than in 'Kozjak' (1057.38 ± 61.05 μg g−1). Our results indicate that the concentration of endogenous IAA has a significant influence on rooting success. The results further indicate that in the case of flavonoids and strigolactones, not only the individual compounds but also their ratio is important for rooting success. Correlation coefficients calculated between analyzed compounds and rooting success point toward specific functions of flavonoids and strigolactones in the rooting of Castanea that need to be functionally analyzed. Key message: The pyroligneous acid of Acacia mearnsii enhanced the rooting, promoted higher carbon allocation and quality of rooted cuttings representing a novel, natural input for subtropical Eucalyptus clone production. The development of strategies aimed at optimizing the clonal propagation of Eucalyptus species, especially those that are difficult to root, is of great importance. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of applying different concentrations of the pyroligneous acid (PA) of Acacia mearnsii De Wild, through foliar spraying, on mini-cuttings of E. benthamii, E. dunnii, and the hybrid, E. urophylla × E. dunnii, during the summer and winter periods in southern Brazil. The experiments were carried out in a greenhouse in a factorial scheme, testing four PA concentrations (0 [control], 2%, 4%, and 6%) and five clones, E. benthamii (B1 and B2), E. dunnii (D1 and D2), and E. urophylla × E. dunnii (UD). Thirty days after staking, the percentage survival of the mini-cuttings was evaluated, and at 50 days, adventitious rooting and callogenesis, as well as the morphological attributes of the mini-cuttings were evaluated. Chemical analysis of the PA revealed the presence of phenolic compounds, primarily syringol, pyrocatechol, and guaiacol derivatives. The PA of A. mearnsii was shown to be a potential alternative input for maximizing the rooting percentages of subtropical Eucalyptus clones that are difficult to propagate. PA contributed to greater allocation of dry matter and quality (Dickson Quality Index) of clonal seedlings, except for clone D2. Spraying concentrations between 2 and 4% PA, applied twice a week, optimized the subtropical eucalyptus mini-cuttings, with the dose of maximum technical efficiency being (DMTE) estimated between 3.5 and 4.5% PA. Successful invasion of biological entities does not merely depend on the rigorous habitat attributes of invaded regions, besides, the intrinsic traits of the invader species also play a significant role in the process of invasion. Evaluation of plants' functioning across habitats helps in understanding which traits are contributing to invasion success in response to changing environmental factors as well as the habitat preference and vulnerability of invasive plants. This study analyzed the effects of forest types on the growth and reproduction capacity of a dreadful invasive alien weed Ageratina adenophora (Spreng.) King and Rob. Different forest types selected for the present study were Sal, Sal-mixed, Chir-Pine, Banj-Oak, Cypress, and Kharsu-Oak forests in Kumaun Himalaya, India. At each forest site, twenty-four 1 × 1 m size quadrats were randomly laid during the peak growth period of A. adenophora (mid-March–April). The numbers of A. adenophora individuals/quadrats were also counted to compute the density of this weed in each forest type. Three plants were chosen at random from each quadrat and uprooted carefully followed by their morphological and reproductive traits assessment in each forest type following standard methods. To check the variability in soil physicochemical properties, the soil was collected from the surface layer (0–15 cm depth) of each forest type in replicates of three using soil corer. Other environmental variables like aspect, elevation, and solar irradiance were also recorded for selected forest types. ANOVA results showed a significant effect of forest types on all the measured plant traits except root length (p = 0.427), root/shoot ratio (p = 0.201), and root weight ratio (p = 0.225). Soil physicochemical properties also showed considerable variations across forest types except for soil pH. The maximum density (109 individuals/m2), plant height, (149.6 cm/plant), aboveground biomass (19.59 g/plant), and belowground biomass (2.82 g/plant) were recorded in the Cypress forest population, while the lowest growth was recorded in the Kharsu-Oak forest population with 10 individuals/m2 density, 57.94 cm plant height, 3.36 g aboveground biomass, and 0.30 g belowground biomass/plant. Generally, A. adenophora allocated maximum biomass to shoots (57–81%), thus increasing carbon assimilation, while minimum biomass was allocated to reproductive parts (0–17%) indicating higher growth through vegetative propagation. Leaf area was highest in the Banj-Oak forest (2266.04 cm2), while reproductive performance in terms of seed numbers (13,646 seeds/plant), seed weight (0.54 g/plant), and reproductive index (119.26) was highest in the Sal-mixed forest. This study concluded that A. adenophora acclimates to heterogeneous environments in different forest ecosystems through higher plasticity in most of the observed traits. The maximum growth performance of A. adenophora recorded in open-canopied Cypress forest suggested some kind of shade treatment before the emergence of the invader as a control measure to check the invasion. Most wild rose species in the Netherlands belong to Rosa section Caninae (dogroses), with Rosa arvensis (section Synstylae) and Rosa spinosissima (section Pimpinellifoliae) as other indigenous species. All species are rare, often found in small populations or as scattered individuals, except for Rosa canina and Rosa corymbifera. Conservation strategies have been developed for these roses, with a focus on ex situ methods, including clonal archives and seed orchards, using vegetative propagation from the original shrubs. Efficient collection management aims at preservation of maximum genetic diversity with a minimum of duplicated genotypes. However, dogrose taxonomy is complex because of species hybridization, different ploidy levels, and their matroclinal inheritance due to Canina meiosis. They can also reproduce vegetatively through root suckers. In order to assess the genetic structure and the levels of genetic diversity and clonality within and among the wild rose populations in the Netherlands, we genotyped individuals in wild populations and accessions in the ex situ gene bank with 10 highly polymorphic microsatellite markers. The analysis revealed 337 distinct multilocus genotypes (MLGs) from 511 sampled individuals, with some MLGs shared across different species and sites. The genetic structure analysis showed distinct clusters separating non-dogrose species from the Caninae section. Geographic distribution of MLGs indicated both local and widespread occurrences. Redundancy analysis identified 152 distinct MLGs from 244 gene bank accessions, suggesting a 38% redundancy rate. Core collections were optimized to retain genetic diversity with minimal redundancy, selecting subsets of 20–40 individuals from different species groups. The study highlights the value of genetic characterization in guiding sampling strategies for dogroses. We propose a two-step approach that may be used to reveal clonality and redundancy and to optimize core collections of species that combine sexual and vegetative reproduction, to maximize genetic capture in ex situ gene banks. Hesperis isatidea (Boiss.) D.A.German & Al-Shehbaz, a member of the Brassicaceae family, represents a distinctive natural species characterized by its fragrant, conspicuous inflorescences, unique flower coloration, and distinct feather-like foliage. The Turkish name of the species is known as 'Allı Gelin'. This species is native, exhibiting resilience to drought conditions and requiring minimal care. Cultivation studies on this species were carried out at Erzincan Horticultural Research Institute (Türkiye) with project number 106G022 within the scope of TÜBİTAK (Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council). The research aimed to determine optimal production techniques through generative and vegetative propagation methods. The project, initiated in 2013 and concluded in 2022, focused on developing a cultivar of the 'Allı Gelin' plant using single selection breeding techniques. Thirteen populations of 'Allı Gelin' from institute's gene pool were utilized. Employing the single selection method, four distinct lines were identified: compact, tightly spread compact, pyramid-1 and pyramid-2 shaped. Subsequent baby plant tests revealed stability in the tightly spread compact and pyramid-1 lines, leading to their selection for further breeding. Although breeding efforts continued on the compact line, the pyramid-2 line was discontinued due to an inability to attain the desired stability. The successfully tested variants, namely the pyramid-1 and tightly spread compact forms, have been earmarked as candidates for outdoor ornamental plant varieties. Registration procedures for these candidates are underway. Rejuvenation refers to the transition from the state of mature to juvenile. Many ancient Cinnamomum camphora have aged and died due to climatic and anthropic factors. Vegetative propagation can protect valuable germplasm resources. In this study, a 2000-year-old ancient C. camphora and its 2-year-old cutting plantlets were selected as experimental materials. The results indicated that the number of leaves with palisade tissue (Pal) cell layers was different between samples, with two layers in the rejuvenated leaves (RLs) and one layer in the mature leaves (MLs) and young leaves (YLs). Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), isopentenyladenine (iP) and isopentenyladenosine (iPR) concentrations were significantly higher in RLs than in MLs and YLs, but the abscisic acid (ABA) concentration was lower. Targeted metabolome analysis identified 293 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs). Meanwhile, a total of 5241 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by transcriptome sequencing. According to the KEGG analysis, there were seven important enriched pathways in the MLs, RLs and YLs, including plant hormone signal transduction (57 DEGs), plant–pathogen interaction (56 DEGs) and MAPK signaling pathway–plant (36 DEGs). KEGG enrichment conjoint analyses of DEGs and DAMs identified 16 common pathways. Integrated analyses of cytological, hormone, metabolome and transcriptome elements can provide a research basis in regard to the rejuvenation regulatory mechanism of ancient C. camphora. Extensive research has been conducted on the in vitro mass propagation of pear (Pyrus spp.) trees through vegetative propagation, demonstrating high efficiency in shoot multiplication across various pear species. However, the low in vitro rooting rates remain a significant barrier to the practical application and commercialization of mass propagation. This study aims to determine the favorable conditions for inducing root formation in the in vitro microshoots of Pyrus genotypes. The base of the microshoots was exposed to a high concentration (2 mg L−1) of auxins (a combination of IBA and NAA) for initial root induction at the moment when callus formation begins. The microshoots were then transferred to an R1 medium (1/2 MS with 30 g L−1 sucrose without PGRs) to promote root development. This method successfully induced rooting in three European pear varieties, one Asian pear variety, and a European–Asian hybrid, resulting in rooting rates of 66.7%, 87.2%, and 100% for the European pear (P. communis), 60% for the Asian pear (P. pyrifolia), and 83.3% for the hybrid pear (P. pyrifolia × P. communis) with an average of 25 days. In contrast, the control group (MS medium) exhibited rooting rates of 0–13.3% after 60 days of culture. These findings will enhance in vitro root induction for various pear varieties and support the mass propagation and acclimatization of pear. Virus infection is one of the major constraints in garlic production since the viruses are readily accumulated on vegetative propagation material (bulbs). This research aimed to detect garlic common latent virus (GCLV), shallot latent virus (SLV), onion yellow dwarf virus (OYDV), and leek yellow stripe virus (LYSV) infecting local garlic as seed bulb and imported garlic as consumption bulb. Seed bulb samples were obtained from seed breeders in several garlic growing centers in Indonesia. In contrast, consumption bulb samples were obtained from plant quarantine warehouses and three local markets in Bogor. Some bulb samples were used for morphological observations, and some were germinated in the laboratory until the leaves emerged. Leaves were collected for virus detection by RT-PCR using specific primers for GCLV, SLV, OYDV, and LYSV. Seed and consumption bulbs have differences in their morphological characteristics, especially in the type of neck hardness and the size of the bulb diameter. OYDV and LYSV infections were successfully detected in seed and consumption bulbs, while SLV was only found in consumption bulbs. Nucleotide sequence analysis showed that SLV from consumption bulbs formed one group, GCLV from seed bulbs formed one group, while OYDV and LYSV from seed and consumption bulbs were in different groups, indicating that the viruses came from different strains. Further research through high-throughput detection methods and providing virus-free planting material are needed to anticipate the spread of new strains of garlic viruses in Indonesia. The cultivation of pineapple (Ananas comosus) is threatened worldwide by mealybug wilt disease of pineapple (MWP), whose etiology is not yet fully elucidated. In this study, we characterized pineapple mealybug wilt-associated ampeloviruses (PMWaVs, family Closteroviridae) from a diseased pineapple plant collected from Reunion Island, using a high-throughput sequencing approach combining Illumina short reads and Nanopore long reads. Reads co-assembly resulted in complete or near-complete genomes for six distinct ampeloviruses, including the first complete genome of pineapple mealybug wilt-associated virus 5 (PMWaV5) and that of a new species tentatively named pineapple mealybug wilt-associated virus 7 (PMWaV7). Short reads data provided high genome coverage and sequencing depths for all six viral genomes, contrary to long reads data. The 5′ and 3′ ends of the genome for most of the six ampeloviruses could be recovered from long reads, providing an alternative to RACE-PCRs. Phylogenetic analyses did not unveil any geographic structuring of the diversity of PMWaV1, PMWaV2 and PMWaV3 isolates, supporting the current hypothesis that PMWaVs were mainly spread by human activity and vegetative propagation. The nickel hyperaccumulator Bornmuellera tymphaea has been evaluated for use in agromining in Greece with very promising results. This study examines propagation of this species based on cuttings, which provides rapid multiplication and clonal propagation of genotypes with useful genetic traits and offers obvious advantages over propagation by seed. Apical cuttings, 10 cm long, obtained from plants in the field, were propagated on mist benches under greenhouse conditions. Four treatments based on the rooting medium were evaluated: (a) perlite, (b) perlite + peat 1:1 (v/v), (c) ultramafic soil, and (d) ultramafic soil + perlite 1:1 (v/v). Completely randomized blocks were used in a 4 × 2 factorial design, using 4 different propagation rooting media and 2 levels of auxins (with or without the use of indole‐3‐butyric acid [IBA]), with 3 replicates of 28 cuttings. The response to perlite medium was best in terms of rooting: 75% without IBA and 71.33% with IBA, and the dry weight of roots was 0.18 g and of shoots 0.34 g. Perlite + peat 1:1 (v/v) medium also resulted in rooting in more than 55% of cuttings whereas cuttings grown in ultramafic soil showed very low rooting (<27%). Based on the findings, B. tymphaea has an aptitude for vegetative propagation by cuttings with survival values and rooting greater than 70%. Background The predominance of sex in eukaryotes, despite the high costs of meiosis and mating, remains an evolutionary enigma. Many theories have been proposed, none of them being conclusive on its own, and they are, in part, not well applicable to land plants. Sexual reproduction is obligate in embryophytes for the great majority of species. Scope This review compares the main forms of sexual and asexual reproduction in ferns and angiosperms, based on the generation cycling of sporophyte and gametophyte (leaving vegetative propagation aside). The benefits of sexual reproduction for maintenance of genomic integrity in comparison to asexuality are discussed in the light of developmental, evolutionary, genetic and phylogenetic studies. Conclusions Asexual reproduction represents modifications of the sexual pathway, with various forms of facultative sexuality. For sexual land plants, meiosis provides direct DNA repair mechanisms for oxidative damage in reproductive tissues. The ploidy alternations of meiosis–syngamy cycles and prolonged multicellular stages in the haploid phase in the gametophytes provide a high efficiency of purifying selection against recessive deleterious mutations. Asexual lineages might buffer effects of such mutations via polyploidy and can purge the mutational load via facultative sexuality. The role of organelle–nuclear genome compatibility for maintenance of genome integrity is not well understood. In plants in general, the costs of mating are low because of predominant hermaphroditism. Phylogenetic patterns in the archaeplastid clade suggest that high frequencies of sexuality in land plants are concomitant with a stepwise increase of intrinsic and extrinsic stress factors. Furthermore, expansion of genome size in land plants would increase the potential mutational load. Sexual reproduction appears to be essential for keeping long-term genomic integrity, and only rare combinations of extrinsic and intrinsic factors allow for shifts to asexuality. The importance of seed and vegetative propagation for the spontaneous expansion of black locust on abandoned agricultural land was evaluated in the present study. The dynamics of expansion was reconstructed on the basis of spatial distribution data on the age of individuals of this species. A non-homogeneous Poisson process with a linear trend and a Widom-Rowlinson model were the most appropriate in explaining the spatial distribution of R. pseudoacacia individuals. The negative linear trend was statistically significant for the vast majority of polygons in the area of spontaneous expansion of R. pseudoacacia, but insignificant in the artificial plantation. The model parameter η indicates the aggregated spatial distribution of R. pseudoacacia in the zone of spontaneous spread due to the vegetative mechanism of spread. The distribution of R. pseudoacacia in the artificial tree plantation was close to regular, or either random or aggregated. In the early stages, the seed reproduction is the most likely process of R. pseudoacacia spreading. The seed mechanism of spreading follows a spatial pattern, which is explained by a linear trend. The next stage is a combination of both seed and vegetative mechanisms of spread, which also lasts about 4–5 years. At the last stage, the spread occurs mainly through the vegetative mechanism, and the rate of spread of the community slows down significantly. The trigger for the spread is anthropogenic impact. The dominant woody plants of active floodplains in the northern temperate zone are various species of Salix (willows) and Populus (poplars and cottonwoods) in the tribe Saliceae of the family Salicaceae. In this review, I consider the traits that enable these species to thrive in the dynamic floodplain environment and ask why they are now declining in the northern hemisphere, yet spreading rapidly in the southern hemisphere. I reach four main conclusions. First, floodplain Saliceae exhibit traits, notably huge numbers of minute, wind‐ and water‐dispersed seeds and an exceptional capacity for vegetative propagation, that uniquely fit them for life on the active floodplain. Second, there are no functional equivalents to floodplain Salix and Populus in the southern hemisphere, which accounts for their remarkable success in invading riparian ecosystems. Third, the replacement of Saliceae by other species in the northern hemisphere has been caused mainly by changes in flow through dam construction, regulation and abstraction. The species that replace Saliceae vary according to site conditions: fertile sites in humid climates become occupied by various broadleaved trees (e.g., Acer negundo, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Ailanthus altissima); nitrogen‐fixing shrubs dominate in areas where nitrogen is limiting but phosphorus is adequate (Amorpha fruticosa, Robinia pseudoacacia, Elaeagnus angustifolia); sites in more arid regions are occupied by various Tamarix spp. The different ecological groups of woody species are associated with contrasting changes to the floodplain ecosystem. Saffron is an economically high-value crop globally that can give farmers a high income. Its sexually sterile nature demands vegetative propagation and quality planting material. Hence, this study was designed to build a rapid and reproducible procedure for the micropropagation of saffron. We have examined the surface sterilization of corms as explant with fungicides, antibiotics, and 0.1% mercuric chloride, resulting in maximum sprouting (91.07%) with minimum contamination and mortality. As the propagation of saffron corm and its germination is a critical factor for its yield, we have checked different phytohormone concentrations for bud corm germinations. We found that BAP is an efficient cytokinin to initiate buds on corms. MS medium with NAA (0.5 mg L-1) and BAP (3.0 mg L-1)led to 97.77% sprouting in an average of 34.67 days. Subculturing of sprouted corms on the increased concentration of BAP enhanced shoot proliferation from the base of the sprouted bud. The MS medium with NAA (0.5 mg L-1) and BAP (6.0 mg L-1) shows maximum mean number of shoots (12.67). The presence of growth retardants like ABA, PBZ, and CCC inhibited shoot growth and led to corm development. PBZ (1.5 mg L-1) significantly affected cormlet induction (80%), with a maximum mean weight of 1.70g. Accumulative sucrose concentration to 90 g L-1 further increased mean weight (2.52 g) and size of cormlets (1.08 cm). Objective: To found simple and low-cost ways to increase the number of plants. In Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico, a trial was established to evaluate two propagation forms from January to June 2023. Design/Methodology/Approach: In soil enriched with bocashi, 22 seeds of seasoned fruits were sown. Also, four lots of stem cuttings were planted (five cuttings per lot) 30 cm in length, testing four average diameters (2.94, 2.34, 2.1 and 1.58, cm) that were also rooted in soil and bokashi, on the assumption that those with the largest diameter were also the oldest. The stem cuttings were obtained from 1.5- and 2.5-year-old trees. This latter experimental procedure was repeated, but stem cuttings were obtained from an 8-year-old tree, five lots of cuttings with the following average diameters (3.6, 1.92, 1.74, 1.7, and 1.16, cm) were evaluated; in addition, cuttings were treated with a stimulant to develop roots (Raizal® 400). Results: The data analyzed in Excel™ showed that germination is slow and irregular, 77% germination was reached after 2.5 months. Only the thickest cuttings from the 1.5-year-old tree developed abundant roots and vegetative shoots. Findings/Conclusions: The propagation of S. dulcis is better done by seeds. Because of their tolerance to root rot and many abiotic stresses, rootstocks are generally required for commercial avocado production. However, cutting and air-layering, which are popular methods of vegetative propagation for producing large numbers of uniform and genetically identical plants, have been unsuccessful for years. To develop a practical and efficient rooting procedure for selected avocado clonal rootstocks, the present research investigated the effects of various factors on rooting cutting. Shoots were divided into three groups (air layering, direct cutting, and stem-buried etiolation) and treated with different combinations (plant growth regulators, PGRs; soaking time; and culture media), in which orthogonal or randomized-block designs were used. The rooting rate, average root length, average root number, average root dry weight, and rooting quality (Q value) were used as evaluation indicators. The results show that etiolation treatment of the mother shoot is the requisite condition for avocado shoot rooting. In addition, the rooting effect of etiolated cuttings was strongly impacted by PGR type, concentration, and soaking time, whereas no significant differences were detected among the culture media. Among these factors, the roots and the survival rates of etiolated cuttings of two hard-to-root varieties were optimal under the following conditions: indolebutyric acid concentration of 2500 mg/L, dipping duration for 5 s, and perlite:vermiculite culture at 1:1. The research investigated the vegetative propagation of Bagoadlau (Xanthosthemon philippinensis Merr.) stem cuttings using different concentrations of indolebutyric acid (IBA). Pretreated cuttings were planted in polyethylene bags and observed in a fully covered chamber for 45 days. The study employed a single trial of completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments (500 ppm, 1,000 ppm, 1,500 ppm, and 2,000 ppm), each replicated four times. Results indicated significant variations among treatment means in terms of percent shooting, shoot length, percent rooting, number and length of adventitious roots, and percent callusing. Notably, 500 ppm and 1,500 ppm demonstrated the highest outcomes in percent shooting, shoot length, percent survival, measurement of adventitious roots, count of roots, and percentage of rooting. In contrast, the survival percentage of T2 (500 ppm) displayed the highest rate and consistent performance compared to other treatments. Hence, the study recommends using 500 ppm and 1,500 ppm for effective rooting of Bagoadlau (Xanthosthemon philippinensis Merr.) stem cuttings. The successful propagation of native species like Bagoadlau is particularly relevant to ecosystem restoration efforts in regions marked by land degradation and mining activities. The study addresses several crucial aspects by successfully establishing Bagoadlau on such lands. Background: Salt tolerance in plants is defined as their ability to grow and complete their life cycle under saline conditions. Staple crops have limited salt tolerance, but forage grass can survive in large unexploited saline areas of costal or desert land. However, due to the restriction of self-incompatible fertilization in many grass species, vegetative propagation via stem cuttings is the dominant practice; this is incompatible with current methodologies of salt-tolerance phenotyping, which have been developed for germination-based seedling growth. Therefore, the performance of seedlings from cuttings under salt stress is still fuzzy. Moreover, the morphological traits involved in salt tolerance are still mostly unknown, especially under experimental conditions with varying levels of stress. Results: To estimate the salt tolerance of cutting propagation-dependent grasses, a reliable and low-cost workflow was established with multiple saline treatments, using Paspalum vaginatum as the material and substrate as medium, where cold stratification and selection of stem segments were the two variables used to control for experimental errors. Average leaf number (ALN) was designated as the best criterion for evaluating ion-accumulated salt tolerance. The reliability of ALN was revealed by the consistent results among four P. vaginatum genotypes, and three warm-season (pearl millet, sweet sorghum, and wild maize) and four cold-season (barley, oat, rye, and ryegrass) forage cultivars. Dynamic curves simulated by sigmoidal mathematical models were well-depicted for the calculation of the key parameter, Salt50. The reliability of the integrated platform was further validated by screening 48 additional recombinants, which were previously generated from a self-fertile mutant of P. vaginatum. The genotypes displaying extreme ALN-based Salt50 also exhibited variations in biomass and ion content, which not only confirmed the reliability of our phenotyping platform but also the representativeness of the aerial ALN trait for salt tolerance. Conclusions: Our phenotyping platform is proved to be compatible with estimations in both germination-based and cutting propagation-dependent seedling tolerance under salt stresses. ALN and its derived parameters are prone to overcome the species barriers when comparing salt tolerance of different species together. The accuracy and reliability of the developed phenotyping platform is expected to benefit breeding programs in saline agriculture. As in most colonial and sessile marine invertebrates, bryozoan life history is characterized by asexual propagation of zooids for colonial growth and by sexual production of larvae for dispersal. However, comprehensive life histories, particularly in cryptic species such as endolithic (boring) bryozoans, remain poorly understood. The ctenostome family Penetrantiidae is widespread from temperate to tropical waters and often found in molluscan shells, offering an opportunity to study the boring lifestyle and its potential impact on bioerosion through growth and settlement experiments. Our research focused on Penetrantia clionoides from Guam in the Pacific Ocean, Penetrantia japonica from Japan, and a Penetrantia species from France in the Atlantic Ocean. We found distinct life histories and reproductive patterns potentially influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and food availability. The tropical P. clionoides displayed higher rates of larval production and growth compared to its temperate counterpart. For instance, the mean stolon extension was 335.2 μm/week in P. clionoides versus 232.1 μm/week in Penetrantia sp. Autozooid development took 13 days in P. clionoides and 31 days in Penetrantia sp. Anatomical features like apertural rims aided in species identification and in understanding larval settlement preferences, suggesting a tendency for philopatric settlement behavior. The bioerosional impact of penetrantiids remains little understood, but we generated first projections of bioerosion rates and a protocol for keeping Penetrantia under laboratory conditions, laying a foundation for further research in this field. The domestication process in grapevines has facilitated the fixation of desired traits. Nowadays, vegetative propagation through cuttings enables easier preservation of these genotypes compared to sexual reproduction. Nonetheless, even with vegetative propagation, various phenotypes are often present within the same vineyard due to the accumulation of somatic mutations. These mutations are not the sole factors influencing phenotype. Alongside somatic variations, epigenetic variation has been proposed as a pivotal player in regulating phenotypic variability acquired during domestication. The emergence of these epialleles might have significantly influenced grapevine domestication over time. This study aims to investigate the impact of domestication on methylation patterns in cultivated grapevines. Reduced-representation bisulfite sequencing was conducted on 18 cultivated and wild accessions. Results revealed that cultivated grapevines exhibited higher methylation levels than their wild counterparts. Differential Methylation Analysis between wild and cultivated grapevines identified a total of 9955 differentially methylated cytosines, of which 78% were hypermethylated in cultivated grapevines. Functional analysis shows that core methylated genes (consistently methylated in both wild and cultivated accessions) are associated with stress response and terpenoid/isoprenoid metabolic processes. Meanwhile, genes with differential methylation are linked to protein targeting to the peroxisome, ethylene regulation, histone modifications, and defense response. Disturbances from rodent engineering and human activities profoundly impact ecosystem structure and functioning. Whilst we know that disturbances modulate plant communities, comprehending the mechanisms through which rodent and human disturbances influence the functional trait diversity and trait composition of plant communities is important to allow projecting future changes and to enable informed decisions in response to changing intensity of the disturbances. Here, we evaluated the changes in functional trait diversity and composition of Afroalpine plant communities in the Bale Mountains of Ethiopia along gradients of engineering disturbances of a subterranean endemic rodent, the giant root-rat (Tachyoryctes macrocephalus Rüppell 1842) and human activities (settlement establishment and livestock grazing). We conducted RLQ (co-inertia analysis) and fourth-corner analyses to test for trait-disturbance (rodent engineering/human activities) covariation. Overall, our results show an increase in plant functional trait diversity with increasing root-rat engineering and increasing human activities. We found disturbance specific association with traits. Specifically, we found strong positive association of larger seed mass with increasing root-rat fresh burrow density, rhizomatous vegetative propagation negatively associated with increasing root-rat old burrow, and stolonifereous vegetative propagation positively associated with presence of root-rat mima mound. Moreover, both leaf size and leaf nitrogen content were positively associated with livestock dung abundance but negatively with distance from settlement. Overall, our results suggest that disturbances by rodents filter plant traits related to survival and reproduction strategies, whereas human activities such as livestock grazing act as filters for traits related to leaf economics spectrum along acquisitive resource-use strategy. Background: The research was conducted at the ICAR-CRIDA Hayatnagar Research Farm in Hyderabad, India. The plant material consists of tamarind trees planted in 1998 with 5m spacing to improve the morphological and reproductive characteristics of elite genotypes as well as quality and biochemical characters among the twenty tamarind accessions maintained at the research farm. The experiment was started in 1998 and observations were taken over the fruiting season of 2021-2022 with twenty tamarind accessions; the experiments were established in a randomized block design. The trees were identified for their consistent health and development. Methods: Biometric observations mainly average number of flowers per inflorescence, average number of inflorescence per branch, average number of branches per tree, average fruit weight (g), average yield per plant (kg), fruit, pulp, seed weights as well as shell, fiber, fruit, number of normal seeds per pod as well as damaged number of seeds per pod, Carbohydrates g/100 g, Polyphenols g/100 g, Anthocyanin mg/100 g, % Antioxidant activity and % Tartaric acid were recorded and analyzed statistically. Result: Significant differences among the tamarind accessions evaluated, NZB(S), Hasanur #5, Salem 132, NTI-14 and SMG-3 recorded the highest values in all the growth, pod and yield characters. NZB(S) recorded the highest number of flowers per inflorescence (14.62) while Hasanur # 5 recorded the highest number of inflorescence per branch (13.87). In yield attributes, NZB(S) recorded the highest average yield per plant (kg) (15.72) followed by Hasanur #5 (15.09), Salem 132 (14.81) and NTI-14 (14.65). The results revealed that NZB(S) showed the highest mean performance in terms of growth, yield and quality characters. Fruits and seeds morphological traits and seed storage behaviour of Anaxagorea luzonensis are important for seed and plant conservation. Fruits and seeds characterization using a digital microscope and morphometry method. Seed storage behaviour was determined using 100-seed test method. The findings revealed that the colour of A. luzonensis fruit did not change and A. luzonensis seed was glossy, brittle, black in colour, 9.05 x 5.89 x 2.93 mm sized and oval. The seeds are desiccation-tolerant and are categorized as orthodox seeds. These results can become the findings of A. luzonensis seed storage behaviour, because information about it never existed before. Knowing the seed storage behaviour and seed morphology of A. luzonensis is essential so that the recommendation of conservation efforts at PBG in the future are covering the fruit, modifying the environment, breaking dormant seeds, vegetative propagation, and preserving seeds. Monitoring the sanitary status of a large population of vegetative propagation materials is a challenge because it requires expensive and time-consuming testing. Here we report a group testing strategy to identify individual plants carrying viruses and/or a viroid in Pyrus betulifolia seedlings and virus-tested pear mother plants. First, the effect of pool size on RT-PCR detection of apple stem grooving virus (ASGV), apple stem pitting virus (ASPV), apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV) and apple scar skin viroid (ASSVd) was evaluated; all of them could be sensitively detected in a bulk (pool) of eight samples. The virological condition of 2770 P. betulifolia seedlings and 110 virus-tested pear mother plants were then investigated by RT-PCR using a grouping strategy with 5 samples. We identified 20, 35 and 3 P. betulifolia seedlings as positive for ASGV, ASPV, and ASSVd, respectively, and 4 pear mother plants were identified as carrying ASGV. Our data indicated that RT-PCR testing on samples pooled before RNA extraction is a reliable and resource-efficient strategy to monitor the sanitary status of large numbers of pear vegetative propagation materials. Terminalia chebula Retz. is a multipurpose tree but the primary purpose of cultivating and raising this tree species is its fruits. Large sized fruits easily fetch higher prices in the national and global markets. The availability of superior germplasm is, however, restricted by its very low natural regeneration, poor germination capacity of the seeds, very little knowledge about its propagation techniques, long juvenile period for fruits production which is almost 15–20 years. The availability of superior germplasm and shortening of long juvenile period can be resolved by the adoption of various vegetative propagation techniques. In the present study, scions of T. chebula Retz. were grafted on three different rootstocks; T. chebula Retz., Terminalia bellirica Roxb. and Terminalia arjuna Bedd to standardize vegetative propagation techniques in T. chebula. The grafting and budding methods used were cleft grafting, side-veneer grafting and patch budding. The results revealed that out of all the propagation techniques evaluated under nursery conditions, cleft grafting was most promising. It showed better results on principal parameters like graft survival ratio (46.67) and graft take ratio (60.00). In case of rootstocks, T. arjuna performed well on most of the growth parameters. Hence, it is concluded that T. arjuna as a rootstock can be cleft grafted with T. chebula Retz. scion not only to obtain healthy plants with desired characteristics in a short time but also to conserve its germplasm. The Red and White pakestanian mulberry cultivars and Baladi mulberry trees were propagated by using medium hardwood cuttings prepared in November, December and January, and treated with the growth regulators IBA and NAA (0, 2000, 4000 and 6000 ppm) during 2020 and 2021 seasons. The hardwood cuttings treatment was planted in wooden frames inside the greenhouse in a cultivation medium consisting of peat moss and sand (1:3 v/v respectively). Data showed that Baladi mulberry cultivar gave the highest values of rooting percentage while the White Pakestanian gave the highest values for the number of roots per cutting. Concerning growth regulator treatments, IBA at 6000 gave the highest significant number of roots per cutting followed by NAA at 6000 ppm. In the interaction between the two studied factors, the highest rooting percentage was found by NAA at 6000 ppm for Baladi and White cultivars. While the highest values of root number and root length were resulted by IBA at 6000 ppm followed by NAA at 6000 ppm for Baladi and White mulberry cultivars. The C/N ratio in Baladi and White cultivars cuttings was highest in hardwood cuttings prepared in November. The most common method of propagating jackfruit is by seed, yet vegetative propagation techniques are labor-intensive and seasonal, and plantlets cultivated from seeds are heterozygous and do not conform to type. Hence, micropropagation can be used to overcome the limitations of conventional vegetative propagation methods. A better culture establishment was obtained with shoot tips cultured on MS medium with 2 mg L-1 BA. On MS media treated with BA (1-4 mg L-1) and 0.35 mg L-1 GA3, shoots proliferate. The highest number of shoots were obtained in MS medium supplemented with 3mg L-1 BA and 0.35 mg L-1GA3 and the highest shoot length and maximum number of leaves were recorded in MS medium supplemented with 2.5 mg L-1BA and 0.35 mg L-1GA3. Acacia mearnsii De Wild. (Black wattle) is a forest species with great social and economical importance for the southern region of Brazil. This species has multifunctional characteristics, being cultivated to produce tannin, cellulose and energy. This research identified black wattle genotypes with competence for adventitious rooting for mini-cutting propagation. Single-bud mini-cuttings were treated with IBA at a concentration of 2000 mg L-1. After 30 days of cultivation in a humid chamber, the mini-cuttings were evaluated for percentages of survival, rooting, number of roots, average length of the three largest roots, and the number of mini-cuttings rooted per mini-stump. The identification of the best genotypes was performed with the Selegen REML/BLUP software. Selection between and within black wattle progenies can be performed based on the number of rooted mini-cuttings, making it possible to select genotypes with high competence for adventitious rooting while maintaining genetic variability for new selection cycles to develop clones for vegetative propagation by mini-cutting. Soils provide essential ecosystem services for the existence of ecosystems and biodiversity. It is crucial to understand their quality through the evaluation of ecological processes. However, only some studies estimate the effectiveness of ecosystem restoration based on evaluating soil quality (SQ) indicators. This research evaluated the five most common land-use scenarios in Andean ecosystems within the Natural Reserve of the Civil Society (RNSC) "La Montaña Mágica" under natural forest, coffee plantation, badlands, and active and passive restoration. The main objective was to analyze the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics concerning land use, establish the baseline for SQ indicators in different land use activities, and determine the status of restoration systems for other land uses in the study site. ANOVA and Dunnett's test evaluated SQ parameters. In passive and active restoration, soil bulk density, porosity, and the number of individuals and families of macroinvertebrates were improved. The latter presented low pH and aluminum values but increased potassium compared to other soil uses. The restoration strategies favored changes in SQ indicators due to the contribution of organic carbon, a developed root system, and the recirculation of nutrients in the edaphic system. This study provided information on changes in SQ with soil usage as a practical tool to evaluate ecological restoration methods in natural areas of the eastern Colombian Andes. Lack of quality planting materials has significantly limited productivity and quality of commercial forestry plantations in Tanzania. A provenance/progeny trial of Eucalyptus urophylla was established to test performance in order to select the best planting materials for future plantation activities. A complete randomised block design was used whereby 30 families from 8 provenances within 6 replications were tested. At 13 years tree survival, growth (diameter at breast height and height) and stem straightness were assessed. The results indicate that there were highly significant differences (p < 0.05) among provenances and families in survival, height, breast height diameter (DBH) and stem straightness. The overall survival ranged from 79.0% to 96.2%; height ranged between 24.9 and 32.5 m; and DBH ranged from 18.7 to 24.5 cm. Overall, results from this study show that provenances Alassannaru, Elun kirpas, Nesunhuhun and Nakana ulam have better growth performance and stem form than others. These results provide valuable information on the growth performance of different provenances and families of E. urophylla. The provenances and families selected with best performance can be used in developing improved seeds for plantation establishment and/or selection of plus trees for vegetative propagation as candidate clones for a clonal testing programme in Tanzania. Introduction: Phytolacca acinosa Roxb. is a highly valuable multipurpose herb native to the Himalayan region. Unsustainable harvesting of this species due to its diverse uses has resulted in a rapid decline in its population across natural habitats, thereby necessitating its propagation and conservation. To overcome this challenge, the potential of P. acinosa rhizomes for ex situ regeneration was evaluated. Methods: The current study aims to develop a standard propagation protocol for P. acinosa. Rhizome cuttings derived by splitting whole rhizomes were used to study the effect of various hormones and soil compositions on their sprouting and growth performance. Results: Soil compositions SC10 and SC5 consisting of soil, sand, pebbles, and vermicompost (1:1:1:1) and soil, sand, and vermicompost (1:1:1), respectively, were the most suitable compositions for the optimum growth of this species. The rhizome segments treated with GA3 (150ppm) induced the highest sprouting percentage (91.67%), with a minimum sprouting time of 23.25 days. The maximum root length (9.25 cm), shoot length (16.5 cm), and leaf number (11.25) were recorded for GA3 (150ppm) treated rhizome cuttings. Conclutions: Overall, the results of the present study helped in establishing a cost-effective, rapid, efficient, and simple mass propagation method for the target species. The results of this study will serve as a guide for the large-scale cultivation, effective conservation, and sustainable utilization of this economically valuable medicinal herb. Pinus patula Schiede ex Schltdl. et Cham. is endemic to Mexico and is used in both reforestation programs and in the timber industry due to its fast growth, wood quality, and easy handling. With the advance in genetic breeding programs, there is a need to massively propagate new plants from cuttings. One of the main challenges for this purpose is to know the effect of the age of the mother plant (hedge) on the rooting of cuttings. The younger the plant, the greater the rooting is expected to be. Three ontological ages of P. patula mother plants were compared (7, 10, and 13 months). The experimental design was in complete random blocks, with four replications and 25 cuttings per experimental unit. The response variables were evaluated 20 weeks after the experiment was established. No significant differences were observed in the rooting of the three ages evaluated (67.3 to 81 %), nor in the quality of the root (number and length of primary roots, percentage of plants with secondary roots). The results point out an advantage for the propagation of Pinus cuttings since the mother plants at those ages are capable of generating juvenile cuttings that are adequate to obtain percentages of rooting of over 75 %. Vegetative propagation with stem cuttings requires the origination of shoots and roots to form a complete plant. Factors involved in root generation have been researched, but little work has been done on pH. The research was conducted at the College of Postgraduates, Montecillo Campus, Texcoco, Mexico in 2021. In Ficus carica cuttings, the following were evaluated: pH values (4, 7, and 11) in solution with or without auxin, dilution (alcohol or NaOH) of indole butyric acid (IBA), concentration of alcohol to dissolve IBA (10, 15, and 20%), in the percentage of rooting, number of roots, length of the longest root, percentage of sprouted buds at 21 days, date of establishment and anatomical changes at 0, 3 and 6 days after the cutting. Meristematic cells and root primordia were found up to day 6. One hundred percent rooting was obtained in all treatments. pH was not shown to have an effect on the auxin solution, but it did influence the percentage of rooting assessed individually. The "coral gardening" approach has been effective in facilitating the recovery of degraded reefs but methodological variations can influence survivorship and growth of the coral material. In addition, the disproportionate use of certain corals, such as acroporids and pocilloporids, has contributed to a general lack of information on growth patterns and restoration strategies for species that are less common. To investigate how the yield of other species may be increased to support reef restoration efforts in Singapore, we assessed the effects of (1) environment (nursery, reef, and seawall) and (2) transplant orientation (horizontal and vertical) on the performance of Echinopora horrida (Dana, 1846) fragments. Fragments secured in the coral nursery grew significantly faster and survived better than those transplanted on the reef and seawall, highlighting the importance of a nursery‐rearing phase in optimizing the yield of this species. Additionally, survivorship and growth rates were not significantly different between vertically and horizontally transplanted corals, suggesting that modifying transplant orientation was less crucial toward enhancing coral yield. Our findings highlighted the need to optimize the propagation techniques of a wider range of understudied coral species in order to preserve their genetic diversity in the face of anthropogenic and climatic impacts. This study explored the effects of indole butyric acid treatment on the vegetative propagation (cuttings) of Leyland cypress at different rates and periods in two experiments. Cutting materials were obtained from mother trees growing in the nursery. The low treatment rates included 25, 50, 100, and 200 ppm indole butyric acid, whereas the high treatment rates were 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, and 8000 ppm. The cuttings were treated with indole butyric acid for 24 and 48 hours for the low rates in the first experiment and 5 and 10 seconds for the high rates in the second experiment. The study was repeated three times, with 30 cuttings used in each repetition. Low-rate and high-rate treatments involved 900 and 1080 cuttings, respectively. The pretreated cuttings were then propagated in the greenhouse containing a mixture of peat (60%), perlite (20%), and sand (20%). In the low-rate experiment, there was a significant main effect for treatment rate and period as well as an interaction effect (rate × period). Indole butyric acid made no significant rooting difference at the higher rates. In the experiment with the high-rate of hormone, there was a significant main effect for treatment rate whereas the exposure period main and the rate × period interaction effects were not significant. The experiment with > 2000 ppm of hormone rates provided no additional significant increases in rooting and even depressed. In conclusion, 2000 ppm indole butyric acid pretreatment for 5 seconds with the greatest rooting rate of 77.6% is recommended for enhancing the rooting of leyland cypress hardwood cuttings. Given the rapid growth of the Cannabis industry, developing practices for producing young plants with limited genetic variation and efficient growth is crucial to achieving reliable and successful cultivation results. This study presents a multi-faceted experiment series analyzing propagation techniques for evaluating proficiency in the growth and development of Cannabis vegetative cuttings. This research encompasses various (1) soilless propagation methods including aeroponics, horticultural (phenolic) foam, and rockwool; (2) transplant timings; (3) aeroponic spray intervals; and (4) aeroponic reservoir nutrient concentrations, to elucidate their impact on rooting and growth parameters amongst two Cannabis cultivars. Aeroponics was as effective as, and in some cases more effective than, soilless propagation media for root development and plant growth. In aeroponic systems, continuous spray intervals, compared to intermittent, result in a better promotion of root initiation and plant growth. Moreover, raised nutrient concentrations in aeroponic propagation demonstrated greater rooting and growth. The effects of experimental treatment were dependent on the cultivar and sampling day. These findings offer valuable insights into how various propagation techniques and growth parameters can be tailored to enhance the production of vegetative cuttings. These results hold critical implications for cultivators intending to achieve premium harvests through efficient propagule methods and optimization strategies in the competitive Cannabis industry. Ultimately, our findings suggest that aeroponic propagation, compared to alternative soilless methods, is a rapid and efficient process for cultivating vegetative cuttings of Cannabis and offers sustainable advantages in resource conservation and preservation. Sweet potato leaf curl virus (SPLCV) is a whitefly-transmitted begomovirus infecting sweetpotato and other morning glory (Convolvulaceae) species worldwide. The virus is widespread at the USDA, ARS, U.S. Vegetable Laboratory (USVL), and testing of germplasm maintained in the breeding program indicates nearly 100% infection in storage roots of materials propagated for at least four years. Prior to the public release of new germplasm, viruses must be eliminated via laborious and time-consuming meristem-tip culture. The identification of virus-free seedlings early in the selection process can offer an alternative to meristem-tip culture. In this study, we investigated the transmission of SPLCV over two years of consecutive field plantings (early and late) of sweetpotato. While SPLCV is endemic at the USVL, virus transmission pressure over the typical cultivation season is unknown, and avoidance of virus transmission paired with the selection and maintenance of clean material may be a viable alternative to virus elimination. In 2022, the storage roots of 39 first-year seedling (FYS) selections were tested for SPLCV after early-season cultivation, revealing a single selection (2.6%) with a positive test. Similar testing was conducted in 2023 with no SPLCV-positive FYS selections detected. To further assess SPLCV acquisition in the field, replicated late-season plantings of each selected FYS (n = 37) were monitored from planting to harvest. Testing was conducted at 60 and 120 days after planting (DAP). Approximately 35% of the bulk samples were infected at 60 DAP, and infection increased to 52.3% by 120 DAP. Testing of individuals within selected positive bulked samples did not support 100% infection at harvest. Altogether, these results demonstrate that SPLCV transmission during early planting is sufficiently low to facilitate the maintenance of virus-free selections, offering an alternative to virus cleaning and a cultivation strategy that may be leveraged for production. Improving mini-cutting techniques and processes for subtropical eucalyptus can yield new superior clones and increase the production rate of high-quality rooted mini-cuttings. In this study, we evaluated the influence of mini-tunnels in a clonal mini-garden, associated with different rooting environments, on the survival, rhizogenesis, and morphology of established mini-cuttings of subtropical eucalyptus during the spring–summer and autumn–winter seasons in southern Brazil. Two clones of Eucalyptus benthamii (B1 and B2) and Eucalyptus dunnii (D1 and D2) and one hybrid of Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus dunnii (UD) were evaluated. Experiments were conducted in a factorial scheme, testing three rooting environments [greenhouse without mini-tunnel (G0), with polyethylene mini-tunnel (G1), and with red shade net mini-tunnel (G2)] and two mini-cutting production environments [clonal mini-garden without (M0) and with a mini-tunnel (M1)]. Mini-cuttings from M1 presented a higher percentage of rooting. Dry matter production by E. benthamii clones increased when mini-cuttings were obtained from M1 during spring–summer. G1 and G2 conditions in the greenhouse allowed greater rooting for clones D2 and UD. Using a mini-tunnel in the rooting house did not substantially change the morphology of established mini-cuttings. Variations in environmental conditions between the study periods were confirmed to be the predominant factor in adventitious rhizogenesis. Low average temperatures (15–20 °C) were optimal for the rooting of clones B1, B2, and D2; in contrast, UD and D1 showed higher plasticity, with higher percentages under average temperatures between 15 and 25 °C. Keteleeria davidiana var. calcarea is an endangered plant endemic to China. It is mainly distributed in the karst areas of the Guangxi and Guizhou Provinces. It is characterized by small populations and intermittent distribution. This study aimed to explore the genetic diversity and mating system of wild populations of Keteleeria davidiana var. calcarea in fragmented habitats. To achieve this, we genotyped 46 maternal trees and 214 progenies from four fragmented populations of Keteleeria davidiana var. calcarea using nine pairs of microsatellite primers. The genetic diversity of Keteleeria davidiana var. calcarea (Ho = 0.68, He = 0.63) was lower than that of the species overall but higher than that of other Keteleeria plants. The incidence of unbiased expected heterozygosity (uHe) and allelic richness (Ar) was higher in the maternal generation than in the progeny. This suggests that the genetic diversity of the progeny was lower than that of the maternal generation. Keteleeria davidiana var. calcarea is divided into four populations, but there is significant genetic exchange between the populations according to STRUCTURE and gene flow analyses. The multilocus mating system analysis (MLTR) results indicate that the multilocus outcrossing rate (tm) was 0.902, the single-locus outcrossing rate (ts) was 0.606, the bimaternal inbreeding coefficient (tm-ts) was 0.295, and the coefficient of inbreeding depression(δ) was 0.904. These results suggest a certain degree of selfing and inbreeding in Keteleeria davidiana var. calcarea. To prevent problems associated with inbreeding and conserve the genetic diversity of Keteleeria davidiana var. calcarea, we recommend establishing seed gardens, using artificial pollination, and employing asexual propagation techniques for conservation intervention. Ginkgo biloba L. is a valuable medicinal plant known for its high content of flavonoids and terpenoids in the leaves of young trees. Pruning can increase leaf yield in ginkgo plantations; however, it is unclear how the intensity of pruning affects leaf yield and quality. In addition, G. biloba exhibits low cutting rooting rates, which limits its efficiency in asexual propagation. In our study, we compared consecutive pruning with varying levels of intensity, including top pruning, light pruning, and heavy pruning, to evaluate the effects of pruning on leaf yield and cutting rooting. The results showed that these three pruning methods all contributed to an increase in the number of new branches, the leaf weight, and the flavonoid content in five-year-old trees. Among them, the effect of light pruning was the best, with a 150% increase in branch number, a 130% increase in leaf weight, and a 40.6% increase in flavonoid content. The secondary pruning further increased leaf area by 22.3%, indicating that secondary pruning further enhanced the rejuvenation of plants and increased leaf yield. At the transcriptional level, pruning can significantly change the expression of genes related to bud sprouting, resulting in a particularly significant increase in SHR expression in the buds. Pruning also promoted the expression of important genes related to flavonoid synthesis, including chalcone synthase (CHS), flavonoid 3′-hydroxylase (F3′H), flavonol synthase (FLS), and dihydroflavonol reductase (DFR). Furthermore, we demonstrated a significant increase in the rooting rate of these second-pruned branch cuttings and screened the optimal hormone ratio for rooting, which is 1.5 μM MeJA + 400 mg/L NAA + 100 mg/L Uniconazole-P. These results suggest that secondary pruning can effectively rejuvenate plants to promote cutting rooting in G. biloba.
