In this paper, we present the two-dimensional unstructured grids extension of the a posteriori local subcell correction (APLSC) of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes introduced in our previous article. The technique is based on the reformulation of DG scheme as a finite volume (FV) like method through the definition of some specific numerical fluxes referred to as reconstructed fluxes. High-order DG numerical scheme combined with this new local subcell correction technique ensures positivity preservation of the solution, along with a low oscillatory and sharp shocks representation. The main idea of this correction procedure is to retain as much as possible the high accuracy and the very precise subcell resolution of DG schemes, while ensuring the robustness and stability of the numerical method, as well as preserving physical admissibility of the solution. Consequently, an a posteriori correction will only be applied locally at the subcell scale where it is needed, but still ensuring the scheme conservation. Practically, at each time step, we compute a DG candidate solution and check if this solution is admissible (for instance positive, non-oscillating,. . .). If it is the case, we go further in time. Otherwise, we return to the previous time step and correct locally, at the subcell scale, the numerical solution. To this end, each cell is subdivided into subcells. Then, if the solution is locally detected as bad, we substitute the DG reconstructed flux on the subcell boundaries by a robust first-order numerical flux. And for subcell detected as admissible, we keep the high-order DG reconstructed flux which allows us to retain the very high accurate resolution and conservation of the DG scheme. As a consequence, only the solution inside troubled subcells and its first neighbors will have to be recomputed, elsewhere the solution remains unchanged. Another technique blending in a convex combination fashion DG reconstructed fluxes and first-order FV fluxes for admissible subcells in the vicinity of troubled areas will also be presented and prove to improve results in comparison to the original algorithm. Numerical results on various type problems and test cases will be presented to assess the very good performance of the design correction algorithm.

One of the main issues in the field of numerical schemes is to ally robustness with accuracy. Considering gas dynamics, numerical approximations may generate negative density or pressure, which may lead to nonlinear instability and crash of the code. This phenomenon is even more critical using a Lagrangian formalism, the grid moving and being deformed during the calculation. Furthermore, most of the problems studied in this framework contain very intense rarefaction and shock waves. In this paper, the admissibility of numerical solutions obtained by high-order finite-volume-scheme-based methods, such as the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method, the essentially non-oscillatory (ENO) and the weighted ENO (WENO) finite volume schemes, is addressed in this Lagrangian gas dynamics framework. To this end, we first focus on the one-dimensional case. After briefly recalling how to derive Lagrangian forms of the gas dynamics system of equations, a discussion on positivity-preserving approximate Riemann solvers, ensuring first-order finite volume schemes to be positive, is then given. This study is conducted for both ideal gas and non ideal gas equations of state (EOS), such as the Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) EOS or the Mie-Grüneisen (MG) EOS. It enables us to derive time step conditions ensuring the desired positivity property, as well as L 1 stability of the specific volume and total energy over the domain. Then, making use of the work presented in [74, 75, 15], this positivity study is extended to high-orders of accuracy, where new time step constraints are obtained, and proper limitation is required. This whole analysis is finally applied to the two-dimensional case, and shown to fit a wide range of numerical schemes in the literature, such as the GLACE scheme [12], the EUCCLHYD scheme [55], the GLACE scheme on conical meshes [8], and the LCCDG method [72]. Through this new procedure, scheme robustness is highly improved and hence new problems can be tackled. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of these methods. Finally, let us emphasize that even if this paper is concerned with purely Lagrangian schemes, the theory developed is of fundamental importance for any methods relying on a purely Lagrangian step, as ALE methods or non-direct Euler schemes.

Based on the total Lagrangian kinematical description, a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of the gas dynamics equations is developed for two-dimensional fluid flows on general unstructured grids. Contrary to the updated Lagrangian formulation, which refers to the current moving configuration of the flow, the total Lagrangian formulation refers to the reference fixed configuration, which is usually the initial one. In this framework, the Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions of the kinematical and the physical variables are related by means of the Piola transformation. Here, we describe a cell-centered high-order DG discretization of the physical conservation laws. The geometrical conservation law, which governs the time evolution of the deformation gradient, is solved by means of a finite element discretization. This approach allows to satisfy exactly the Piola compatibility condition. Regarding the DG approach, it relies on the use of a polynomial space approximation which is spanned by a Taylor basis. The main advantage in using this type of basis relies on its adaptability regardless the shape of the cell. The numerical fluxes at the cell interfaces are computed employing a node-based solver which can be viewed as an approximate Riemann solver. We present numerical results to illustrate the robustness and the accuracy up to third-order of our DG method. First, we show its ability to accurately capture geometrical features of a flow region employing curvilinear grids. Second, we demonstrate the dramatic improvement in symmetry preservation for radial flows.

Dans cet article, nous décrivons une discrétisation centrée Galerkin discontinu d'ordre élevé des lois de conservations physiques. La loi de conservation géométrique, qui détermine l'évolution temporelle du tenseur gradient de déformation, est quant à elle résolue par une discrétisation éléments finis. Cette approche nous permet une satisfaction exacte de la condition de compatibilité de Piola. Concernant le schéma GD présenté, il repose sur une utilisation des bases de Taylor, qui permettent une prise en compte unifiée des différents types de géométrie (triangulaire, rectangulaire, polygonale). Les flux numériques aux interfaces sont évalués grâce à des solveurs aux nœuds et aux faces, pouvant être vus comme des solveurs de Riemann approchés. Cet article présente des résultats numérique démontrant la robustesse et la précision de notre schéma GD d'ordre trois. Nous montrons dans un premier temps sa capacité à capturer très précisément les régions complexes d'écoulements grâce aux géométries curvilignes employées. Nous démontrons dans un second temps le gain drastique lié à la préservation de symétrie des écoulements radiaux.

The intent of the present work was the development of a high-order discontinuous Galerkin scheme for solving the gas dynamics equations written under total Lagrangian form on two-dimensional unstructured grids. To achieve this goal, a progressive approach has been used to study the inherent numerical difficulties step by step. Thus, discontinuous Galerkin schemes up to the third order of accuracy have firstly been implemented for the one-dimensional and two-dimensional scalar conservation laws on unstructured grids. The main feature of the presented DG scheme lies on the use of a polynomial Taylor basis. This particular choice allows in the two-dimensional case to take into general unstructured grids account in a unified framework. In this frame, a vertex-based hierarchical limitation which preserves smooth extrema has been implemented. A generic form of numerical fluxes ensuring the global stability of our semi-discrete discretization in the $L_2$ norm has also been designed. Then, this DG discretization has been applied to the one-dimensional system of conservation laws such as the acoustic system, the shallow-water one and the gas dynamics equations system written in the Lagrangian form. Noticing that the application of the limiting procedure, developed for scalar equations, to the physical variables leads to spurious oscillations, we have described a limiting procedure based on the characteristic variables. In the case of the one-dimensional gas dynamics case, numerical fluxes have been designed so that our semi-discrete DG scheme satisfies a global entropy inequality. Finally, we have applied all the knowledge gathered to the case of the two-dimensional gas dynamics equation written under total Lagrangian form. In this framework, the computational grid is fixed, however one has to follow the time evolution of the Jacobian matrix associated to the Lagrange-Euler flow map, namely the gradient deformation tensor. In the present work, the flow map is discretized by means of continuous mapping, using a finite element basis. This provides an approximation of the deformation gradient tensor which satisfies the important Piola identity. The discretization of the physical conservation laws for specific volume, momentum and total energy relies on a discontinuous Galerkin method. The scheme is built to satisfying exactly the Geometric Conservation Law (GCL). In the case of the third-order scheme, the velocity field being quadratic we allow the geometry to curve. To do so, a Bezier representation is employed to define the mesh edges. Dans le cas de la dynamique des gaz, les flux numériques ont été construits afin que le système satisfasse une inégalité entropique globale. Fort de l'expérience acquise, nous avons appliqué la discrétisation GD mise en place aux équations bi-dimensionnelles de la dynamique des gaz, écrites dans un formalisme Lagrangien total. Dans ce cadre, le domaine de référence est fixe. Cependant, il est nécessaire de suivre l'évolution temporelle de la matrice jacobienne associée à la transformation Lagrange-Euler de l'écoulement, à savoir le tenseur gradient de déformation. Dans le travail présent, la transformation résultant de l'écoulement est discrétisée de manière continue à l'aide d'une base Éléments Finis. Cela permet une approximation du tenseur gradient de déformation vérifiant l'identité essentielle de Piola. La discrétisation des lois de conservation physiques sur le volume spécifique, le moment et l'énergie totale repose sur une méthode Galerkin discontinu. Le schéma est construit de sorte à satisfaire de manière exacte la loi de conservation géométrique (GCL). Dans le cas du schéma d'ordre trois, le champ de vitesse étant quadratique, la géométrie doit pouvoir se courber. Pour ce faire, des courbes de Bézier sont utilisées pour la paramétrisation des bords des cellules du maillage. Nous illustrons la robustesse et la précision des schémas mis en place à l'aide d'un grand nombre de cas tests pertinents, ainsi que par une étude de taux de convergence.
