Abstract

The article investigates the content of benz(a)pyrene in the soil and leaves of the medicinal plant Plantago magorL. growing in the Perm Territory at different distances from a major highway. The authors found an increase in the concentration of benz(a)pyrene in the soil and in the leaves of Plantago major L. during three years from 2019 to 2021. This is associated with the increase in traffic intensity along the Perm-Ilyinsky highway. The article shows a tendency to decrease the concentration of benz(a)pyrene in all soil samples and leaves of the plant has as distance from the highway. The authors give recommendations regarding the harvesting of leaves of the medicinal plant Plantago major L. in Ilyinsky district, which is advisable to grow at a distance of at least 500 m from the highway.

Abstract

Future decades will experience tons of silicon waste from various sources, with no reliable recycling route. The transformation of bulk silicon into SiO2 nanoparticles is environmentally significant because it provides a way to recycle residual silicon waste. To address the needs of silicon recycling, we develop a top-down approach that achieves 100% conversion of bulk silicon to silica nanoparticles with outcome sizes of 8-50 nm. In addition to upcycling the potential of silica, our method also possesses several advantages, such as simplicity, scalability and controllable particle size distribution. Many fields of science and manufacturing, such as optics, photonics, medical, and mechanical applications, require size-controllable fabrication of silica nanoparticles. We demonstrate that control over temperature and hydrolysis time has a significant impact on the average particle size and distribution shape. Additionally, we unravel the process of nanoparticle formation using a theoretical nucleation model and quantum density functional theory calculations. Our results provide a theoretical and experimental basis for silica nanoparticle fabrication and pave the way for further silicon conservation research., Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The effect of nitrogen and oxygen plasma on quasi-two-dimensional MoS2 films is studied experimentally and theoretically in order to identify the main mechanisms of surface functionalization and the influence on the structure and on the properties of the films. Diagnostics of samples before and after treatment using radicals and ions is carried out ex situ using Raman spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, X‑ray photoelectron spectroscopy, etc. It is shown that the effect of the nitrogen and oxygen plasma on ultrathin MoS2 films results in modifying the near-surface layers of the samples due to removal of sulfur and incorporation of incident atoms into the resulting vacancies. The simulation of density functional theory is applied to reveal the main mechanisms of surface functionalization in MoS2 monolayers and to explain the experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The results of X-ray diffraction, complex in-field (up to 9 T) and temperature (5-300 K) Moessbauer and magnetometric studies of the ordered Fe_{65}Al_{35-x}M_x (M=Ga, B; x=0,5,10) and Fe_{65-x}V_xAl_{35} (x=5,10) alloys are presented. Analysis of the magnetometry studies shows that the systems Fe_{65}Al_{35} and Fe_{65}Al_{35-x}Ga_x (x=5, 10) are characterized by two different magnetic states with essentially distinguishing hysteresis loops and AC susceptibility values. The temperature and external magnetic field values inducing the transition from one magnetic state to another are higher in the Ga-doped alloys than in the reference Fe_{65}Al_{35} alloy. The boron addition transforms the magnetic state of the initial alloy Fe_{65}Al_{35} into a ferromagnetic one exhibiting high magnetic characteristics. Substitution of V for Fe in the ternary alloys Fe_{65-x}V_xAl_{35} results in reduction of magnetic characteristics and collapsing of 57Fe hyperfine magnetic filed., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Abstract

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a severe genetic disease caused by mutations in the ACVR1 gene for which there is currently no effective therapy. Therefore, obtaining iPSCs for further modeling and development of treatment methods, including gene therapy, can be very promising. The authors herein describe the generation of the induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSCs) line RCMGi014-A from urinary sediment cells of a patient with clinically expressed and genetically proven (ACVR1:c.6176G>A) FOP. These iPSCs proliferate in dense monolayer cell colonies, have a normal karyotype (46,XY), express pluripotency markers (OCT4, SOX2, TRA-1-60, SSEA-4), and show the ability to differentiate into three germ layers, which confirms their pluripotent status.
