Search

The measurement of magnetic fields in cosmic web filaments can be used to reveal the magnetogenesis of the Universe. In previous work, we produced first estimates of the field strength and its redshift evolution using the Faraday Rotation Measure (RM) catalogue of extragalactic background sources at low frequency obtained with LOFAR observations. Here we refine our analysis by selecting sources with low Galactic RM, which reduces its residual contamination. We also conduct a comprehensive analysis of the different contributions to the extragalactic RMs along the line of sight, and confirm that they are dominated by the cosmic filaments component, with only 21 percent originating in galaxy clusters and the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies. We find a possible hint of a shock at the virial radius of massive galaxies. We also find that the fractional polarization of background sources might be a valuable CGM tracer. The newly selected RMs have a steeper evolution with redshift than previously found. The field strength in filaments ($B_f$) and its evolution are estimated assuming $B_f$ evolves as a power-law $B_f=B_{f,0}\,(1+z)^\alpha$. Our analysis finds an average strength at $z=0$ of $B_{f,0} =11$--15~nG, with an error of 4 nG, and a slope $\alpha=2.3$--$2.6 \pm 0.5$, which is steeper than what we previously found. The comoving field has a slope of $\beta=$ [0.3, 0.6$]\pm 0.5$ that is consistent with being invariant with redshift. The quest for radio signals from technologically-advanced extraterrestrial intelligence has traditionally concentrated on the vicinity of 1.4 GHz. In this paper, we extend the search to unprecedented territories, detailing our extensive observations at 6 GHz and initiating the first-ever survey at 18 GHz with the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT). Our strategy entailed rigorous observation sessions, totaling 36 hours, directed towards the Galactic Center and 72 selected TESS targets-making this the most comprehensive high-frequency technosignature search to date. Our narrowband signal search found no definitive evidence of drifting signals that could suggest an extraterrestrial origin from the surveyed regions. Nevertheless, our efforts have enabled us to set new constraints on the presence of radio emissions from approximately $5\times 10^{5}$ stars, establishing an isotropic radiated power limit of $1.8\times 10^{19} W$. We also provide a comparative analysis of the 'hits' recorded across both frequencies to highlight the significance of pursuing technosignature searches at higher frequencies, where the spectral landscape is less congested and more conducive to detection., Comment: Submitted to Acta Astronautica

Understanding the magnetised Universe is a major challenge in modern astrophysics, and cosmic magnetism has been acknowledged as one of the science key drivers of the most ambitious radio instrument ever planned, the SKA telescope. With this work, we aim to investigate the potential of the SKA telescope and its precursors and pathfinders in the study of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters and filaments through diffuse synchrotron radio emission. Galaxy clusters and filaments of the cosmic web are indeed unique laboratories to investigate turbulent fluid motions and large-scale magnetic fields in action and much of what is known about magnetic fields in galaxy clusters comes from sensitive radio observations. Based on cosmological MHD simulations, we predict radio properties (total intensity and polarisation) of a pair of galaxy clusters connected by a cosmic-web filament. We use our theoretical expectations to explore the potential of polarimetric observations to study large-scale structure magnetic fields in the frequency ranges 50-350MHz and 950-1760MHz. We also present predictions for galaxy cluster polarimetric observations with the SKA precursors and pathfinders (LOFAR2.0 and MeerKAT+). Our findings point out that polarisation observations are particularly powerful for the study of large-scale magnetic fields, since they are not significantly affected by confusion noise. The unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution of the intermediate frequency radio telescopes make them the favourite instruments for the study of these sources through polarimetric data, potentially allowing us to understand if the energy density of relativistic electrons is in equipartition with the magnetic field or coupled with the thermal gas density. The Gemini South telescope is now equipped with a new high-resolution spectrograph called GHOST (the Gemini High-resolution Optical SpecTrograph). This instrument provides high-efficiency, high-resolution spectra covering 347-1060 nm in a single exposure of either one or two targets simultaneously, along with precision radial velocity spectroscopy utilizing an internal calibration source. It can operate at a spectral element resolving power of either 76000 or 56000, and can reach a SNR$\sim$5 in a 1hr exposure on a V$\sim$20.8 mag target in median site seeing, and dark skies (per resolution element). GHOST was installed on-site in June 2022, and we report performance after full integration to queue operations in November 2023, in addition to scientific results enabled by the integration observing runs. These results demonstrate the ability to observe a wide variety of bright and faint targets with high efficiency and precision. With GHOST, new avenues to explore high-resolution spectroscopy have opened up to the astronomical community. We present the [OIII]52{\mu}m map of the dwarf galaxy IC10, obtained with the Field-Imaging Far-Infrared Line Spectrometer (FIFI-LS) on board the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). We combine the [OIII]52{\mu}m map with Herschel and Spitzer observations, to estimate the electron density distribution of the brightest HII regions of IC10. We find that the line ratio [OIII]88{\mu}m/[OIII]52{\mu}m gives electron density (n_e) values (n_e_OIII) that cover a broad range, while the n_e values obtained using the line ratio [SIII]33{\mu}m/[SIII]18{\mu}m (n_e_SIII) are all similar within the uncertainties. n_e_OIII is similar to n_e_SIII for the M1, M2 and A1 regions, and it is higher than n_e_SIII for the two regions, A2 and M1b, which are the brightest in the 24{\mu}m continuum emission. These results suggest that for these regions the two ions, O++ and S++, trace two different ionised gas components, and that the properties of the ionised gas component traced by the O++ ion are more sensitive to the local physical conditions. In fact, while the gas layer traced by [SIII] does not keep track of the characteristics of the radiation field, the n_e_OIII, correlates with the star formation rate (SFR), the dust temperature and the 24{\mu}m. Therefore, n_e_OIII is an indicator of the evolutionary stage of the HII region and the radiation field, with higher n_e_OIII, found in younger SF regions and in more energetic environments., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) describe a heterogeneous set of conditions classified as neurodevelopmental disorders. Although the mechanisms underlying ASD are not yet fully understood, more recent literature focused on multiple genetics and/or environmental risk factors. Heterogeneity of symptoms, especially in milder forms of this condition, could be a challenge for the clinician. In this work, an automatic speech classification algorithm is proposed to characterize the prosodic elements that best distinguish autism, to support the traditional diagnosis. The aim of this study is to probe the sub-mJy polarized source population with LOFAR. We present the method used to stack LOFAR polarization datasets, the resulting catalog of polarized sources, and the derived polarized source counts. The ELAIS-N1 field was selected for a polarimetric study at 114.9-177.4 MHz. A total area of 25 deg2 was imaged at 6"- resolution in the Stokes Q and U parameters. Alignment of polarization angles was done both in frequency and in Faraday space before stacking datasets from 19 eight-hour-long epochs. A search for polarized sources was carried out in the final, stacked dataset, and the properties of the detected sources were examined. The depolarization level of sources known to be polarized at 1.4 GHz was quantified. A one-sigma noise level of 19 {\mu}Jy/beam was reached in the central part of the field after stacking. Twenty-five polarized sources were detected above 8\sigma, five of which had not been detected in polarization at any other radio frequencies before. Seven additional polarized components were found by lowering the threshold to 6\sigma at positions corresponding to sources known to be polarized at 1.4 GHz. In two radio galaxies, polarization was detected from both radio lobes, so the final number of associated radio continuum sources is 31. The detected sources are weakly polarized, with a median degree of polarization of 1.75% for the sample of sources detected in polarized emission. The sources previously detected in polarization at 1.4 GHz are significantly depolarized at 150 MHz. The catalog is used to derive the polarized source counts at 150 MHz. TikTok, a popular short video sharing application, emerged as the dominant social media platform for young people, with a pronounced influence on how young women and people of color interact online. The application has become a global space for youth to connect with each other, offering not only entertainment but also opportunities to engage with artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML)-driven recommendations and create content using AI/M-powered tools, such as generative AI filters. This provides opportunities for youth to explore and question the inner workings of these systems, their implications, and even use them to advocate for causes they are passionate about. We present different perspectives on how youth may learn in personally meaningful ways when engaging with TikTok. We discuss how youth investigate how TikTok works (considering data and algorithms), take into account issues of ethics and algorithmic justice and use their understanding of the platform to advocate for change.

We propose and analyze two convection quasi-robust and pressure robust finite element methods for a fully nonlinear time-dependent magnetohydrodynamics problem. The schemes make use of suitable upwind and CIP stabilizations to handle the fluid and magnetic convective terms. The developed error estimates are uniform in both diffusion parameters and optimal with respect to the diffusive norm; furthermore, for the second (more complex) method we are able to show a quicker error reduction rate in convection dominated regimes. A set of numerical tests support our theoretical findings.

We study substructures of the Weyl group of conformal transformations of the metric of (pseudo)Riemannian manifolds. These substructures are identified by differential constraints on the conformal factors of the transformations which are chosen such that their composition is associative. Mathematically, apart from rare exceptions, they are partial associative groupoids, not groups, so they do not have an algebra of infinitesimal transformations, but this limitation can be partially circumvented using some of their properties cleverly. We classify and discuss the substructures with two-derivatives differential constraints, the most famous of which being known as the harmonic or restricted Weyl group in the physics literature, but we also show the existence of a lightcone constraint which realizes a proper subgroup of the Weyl group. We then show the physical implications that come from invariance under the two most important substructures, concentrating on classical properties of the energy-momentum tensor and a generalization of the quantum trace anomaly. We also elaborate further on the harmonic substructure, which can be interpreted as partial gauge fixing of full Weyl invariance using BRST methods. In this paper, we design and analyze a Virtual Element discretization for the steady motion of non-Newtonian, incompressible fluids. A specific stabilization, tailored to mimic the monotonicity and boundedness properties of the continuous operator, is introduced and theoretically investigated. The proposed method has several appealing features, including the exact enforcement of the divergence free condition and the possibility of making use of fully general polygonal meshes. A complete well-posedness and convergence analysis of the proposed method is presented under mild assumptions on the non-linear laws, encompassing common examples such as the Carreau--Yasuda model. Numerical experiments validating the theoretical bounds as well as demonstrating the practical capabilities of the proposed formulation are presented.

The paper introduces Hands-Free VR, a voice-based natural-language interface for VR. The user gives a command using their voice, the speech audio data is converted to text using a speech-to-text deep learning model that is fine-tuned for robustness to word phonetic similarity and to spoken English accents, and the text is mapped to an executable VR command using a large language model that is robust to natural language diversity. Hands-Free VR was evaluated in a controlled within-subjects study (N = 22) that asked participants to find specific objects and to place them in various configurations. In the control condition participants used a conventional VR user interface to grab, carry, and position the objects using the handheld controllers. In the experimental condition participants used Hands-Free VR. The results confirm that: (1) Hands-Free VR is robust to spoken English accents, as for 20 of our participants English was not their first language, and to word phonetic similarity, correctly transcribing the voice command 96.71% of the time; (2) Hands-Free VR is robust to natural language diversity, correctly mapping the transcribed command to an executable command in 97.83% of the time; (3) Hands-Free VR had a significant efficiency advantage over the conventional VR interface in terms of task completion time, total viewpoint translation, total view direction rotation, and total left and right hand translations; (4) Hands-Free VR received high user preference ratings in terms of ease of use, intuitiveness, ergonomics, reliability, and desirability.

We present deep total intensity and polarization observations of the Coma cluster at 1.4 and 6.6 GHz performed with the Sardinia Radio Telescope. By combining the single-dish 1.4 GHz data with archival Very Large Array observations we obtain new images of the central radio halo and of the peripheral radio relic where we properly recover the brightness from the large scale structures. At 6.6 GHz we detect both the relic and the central part of the halo in total intensity and polarization. These are the highest frequency images available to date for these radio sources in this galaxy cluster. In the halo, we find a localized spot of polarized signal, with fractional polarization of about 45%. The polarized emission possibly extends along the north-east side of the diffuse emission. The relic is highly polarized, up to 55%, as usually found for these sources. We confirm the halo spectrum is curved, in agreement with previous single-dish results. The spectral index is alpha=1.48 +/- 0.07 at a reference frequency of 1 GHz and varies from alpha ~1.1, at 0.1 GHz, up to alpha ~ 1.8, at 10 GHz. We compare the Coma radio halo surface brightness profile at 1.4 GHz (central brightness and e-folding radius) with the same properties of the other halos, and we find that it has one of the lowest emissivities observed so far. We study multifield extensions of Reggeon Field Theory (also equivalent to Directed Percolation model) at criticality in the perturbative epsilon-expansion below the upper critical dimension Dc=4 at one loop, for the special case when all fields have the same scale (anomalous) dimensions. Analyzing all the fixed points of the renormalization group flow for N=2 flavors and some for N=3, we find scale invariant solutions which are characterized by specific emergent global symmetries of the interacting potential. The astronomical community is grappling with the increasing volume and complexity of data produced by modern telescopes, due to difficulties in reducing, accessing, analyzing, and combining archives of data. To address this challenge, we propose the establishment of a coordinating body, an "entity," with the specific mission of enhancing the interoperability, archiving, distribution, and production of both astronomical data and software. This report is the culmination of a workshop held in February 2023 on the Future of Astronomical Data Infrastructure. Attended by 70 scientists and software professionals from ground-based and space-based missions and archives spanning the entire spectrum of astronomical research, the group deliberated on the prevailing state of software and data infrastructure in astronomy, identified pressing issues, and explored potential solutions. In this report, we describe the ecosystem of astronomical data, its existing flaws, and the many gaps, duplication, inconsistencies, barriers to access, drags on productivity, missed opportunities, and risks to the long-term integrity of essential data sets. High resolution spectra with iSHELL on IRTF in the K and M band of the young, heavily accreting B 1.5e star MWC297 show numerous double-peaked CO lines. These CO lines originate in an inclined gaseous disk in Keplerian rotation. MWC297 is the only early B star known to show a Keplerian disk in CO. Analysis of the spectra show that 12CO 1 - 0 is optically thick for the low excitation lines. Even the 13CO 1 - 0 and 12CO 2 - 1 have somewhat optically thick lines at low J levels. We find that the CO emission in the disk can be fitted with CO being in a narrow ring at a radius of 12 AU, with a temperature of 1500 K, and a CO column density of 1.6 e18 cm-2. This model underestimates the line strength of high J lines, indicating that they are excited by fluorescence. The CO overtone lines have a similar temperature, The 13CO lines are much brighter than expected from interstellar isotope ratios. The 13CO lines are wider than the 12CO ones suggesting different excitation conditions. The same is true for 12CO 2 - 1. We see strong absorption in 12CO and 13CO 1 - 0 at low J levels, which is due to two two cold foreground clouds. These clouds, one with a temperature of 8.3 K and a column density of 6.7 e17 cm-2, and the other one colder and with lower column density, can fully account for the observed extinction toward MWC297., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

DRAGONS (Data Reduction for Astronomy from Gemini Observatory North and South) is a platform for the reduction and processing of astronomical data. The Python-based, open-source package includes infrastructure for automation and algorithms for the processing of imaging and spectroscopic data, up to the analysis-ready stage. DRAGONS currently focuses on the reduction of Gemini data, although it allows for support of data from other instruments and telescopes through third-party extensions. Its latest release (v3.1) enables automated reduction of all currently-active Gemini imaging facility instruments, as well as optical longslit spectroscopic data, acquired with GMOS., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

We present the characterization and definitive flux calibration of the Far-Infrared Field Integral Line Spectrometer (FIFI-LS) instrument on-board SOFIA. The work is based on measurements made in the laboratory with an internal calibrator and on observations of planets, moons, and asteroids as absolute flux calibrators made during the entire lifetime of the instrument. We describe the techniques used to derive flat-fields, water vapor column estimates, detector linearity, spectral and spatial resolutions, and absolute flux calibration. Two sets of responses are presented, before and after the entrance filter window was changed in 2018 to improve the sensitivity at 52um, a wavelength range previously not covered by PACS on Herschel. The relative spectral response of each detector and the illumination pattern of the arrays of the FIFI-LS arrays are derived using the internal calibrator before each observational series. The linearity of the array response is estimated by considering observations of bright sources. We find that the deviation from linearity of the FIFI-LS arrays affects the flux estimations less than 1%. The flux calibration accuracy is estimated to be 15% or better across the entire wavelength range of the instrument. Galaxy cluster mergers are natural consequences of the structure formation in the Universe. Such events involve a large amount of energy ($\sim 10^{63}$ erg) dissipated during the process. Part of this energy can be channelled in particle acceleration and magnetic field amplification, enhancing non-thermal emission of the intra- and inter-cluster environment. Recently, low-frequency observations have detected a bridge of diffuse synchrotron emission connecting two merging galaxy clusters, Abell 399 and Abell 401. Such a result provides clear observational evidence of relativistic particles and magnetic fields in-between clusters. In this work, we have used LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observations at 144 MHz to study for the first time the polarized emission in the A399-A401 bridge region. No polarized emission was detected from the bridge region. Assuming a model where polarization is generated by multiple shocks, depolarization can be due to Faraday dispersion in the foreground medium with respect to the shocks. We constrained its Faraday dispersion to be greater than 0.10 rad m$^{-2}$ at 95% confidence level, which corresponds to an average magnetic field of the bridge region greater than 0.46 nG (or 0.41 nG if we include regions of the Faraday spectrum that are contaminated by Galactic emission). This result is largely consistent with the predictions from numerical simulations for Mpc regions where the gas density is $\sim 300$ times larger than the mean gas density., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures; accepted in A&A

We present results of a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) UBVI-band study of star clusters in tidal tails, using new WFC3 and ACS imaging to complement existing WFPC2 data. We survey 12 tidal tails across seven merging systems, deriving ages and masses for 425 star cluster candidates (SCCs). The stacked mass distribution across all systems follows a power law of the form $dN/dM \propto M^{\beta}$, with $\beta = -2.02 \pm 0.15$, consistent with what is seen in other star forming environments. GALEX and Swift UV imaging provide star formation rates (SFRs) for our tidal tails, which when compared with ages and masses of our SCCs, allows for a determination of the cluster formation efficiency (CFE). We find the CFE increases with increasing SFR surface density, matching the theoretical model. We confirm this fit down at SFR densities lower than previously measured (log $\Sigma_\text{SFR} \: (\text{M}_\odot \: \text{yr}^{-1} \: \text{kpc}^{-2}) \approx -4.2$), as related to the CFE. We determine the half-light radii for a refined sample of 57 SCCs with our HST WFC3 and ACS imaging, and calculate their dynamical age, finding the majority of them to be gravitationally bound. We also provide evidence of only low-mass ($< 10^4 \: \text{M}_\odot$) cluster formation in our nearest galaxy, NGC 1487, consistent with the theory that this system is a dwarf merger., Comment: 26 pages, 27 figures. We present results of a wideband high-resolution polarization study of Hydra A, one of the most luminous FR I radio galaxies known and amongst the most well-studied. The radio emission from this source displays extremely large Faraday rotation measures (RM), ranging from -12300 rad m$^{-2}$ to 5000 rad m$^{-2}$, the majority of which are believed to originate from magnetized thermal gas external to the radio tails. The radio emission from both tails strongly depolarizes with decreasing frequency. The depolarization, as a function of wavelength, is commonly non-monotonic, often showing oscillatory behavior, with strongly non-linear rotation of the polarization position angle with $\lambda^2$. A simple model, based on the RM screen derived from the high frequency, high resolution data, predicts the lower frequency depolarization remarkably well. The success of this model indicates the majority of the depolarization can be attributed to fluctuations in the magnetic field on scales $< 1500$ pc, suggesting the presence of turbulent magnetic field/electron density structures on sub-kpc scales within a Faraday rotating (FR) medium., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Observations from past missions such as RXTE and Beppo-SAX suggested the presence of inverse Compton (IC) scattering at hard X-ray energies within the intracluster medium of some massive galaxy clusters. In subsequent years, observations by, e.g., Suzaku, and now NuSTAR, have not been able to confirm these detections. We report on NuSTAR hard X-ray searches for IC emission in two massive galaxy clusters, Abell 665 and Abell 2146. To constrain the global IC flux in these two clusters, we fit global NuSTAR spectra with three models: single (1T) and two-temperature (2T) models, and a 1T plus power law component (T$+$IC). The temperature components are meant to characterize the thermal ICM emission, while the power law represents the IC emission. We find that the 3-30 keV Abell 665 and 3-20 keV Abell 2146 spectra are best described by thermal emission alone, with average global temperatures of $kT = (9.15\pm 0.1)$ keV for Abell 665 and $kT = (8.29\pm 0.1)$ keV for Abell 2146. We constrain the IC flux to $F_{\rm NT} < 0.60 \times 10^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $F_{\rm NT} < 0.85 \times 10^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ (20-80 keV) for Abell 665 and Abell 2146, respectively both at the 90% confidence level. When we couple the IC flux limits with 1.4 GHz diffuse radio data from the VLA, we set lower limits on the average magnetic field strengths of $>$0.14 $\mu$G and $>$0.011 $\mu$G for Abell 665 and Abell 2146, respectively., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures

We introduce a pressure robust Finite Element Method for the linearized Magnetohydrodynamics equations in three space dimensions, which is provably quasi-robust also in the presence of high fluid and magnetic Reynolds numbers. The proposed scheme uses a non-conforming BDM approach with suitable DG terms for the fluid part, combined with an $H^1$-conforming choice for the magnetic fluxes. The method introduces also a specific CIP-type stabilization associated to the coupling terms. Finally, the theoretical result are further validated by numerical experiments.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is capable of delivering an unprecedented all-sky, high-spatial resolution, multi-epoch infrared map to the astronomical community. This opportunity arises in the midst of numerous ground- and space-based surveys that will provide extensive spectroscopy and imaging together covering the entire sky (such as Rubin/LSST, Euclid, UNIONS, SPHEREx, DESI, SDSS-V, GALAH, 4MOST, WEAVE, MOONS, PFS, UVEX, NEO Surveyor, etc.). Roman can uniquely provide uniform high-spatial-resolution (~0.1 arcsec) imaging over the entire sky, vastly expanding the science reach and precision of all of these near-term and future surveys. This imaging will not only enhance other surveys, but also facilitate completely new science. By imaging the full sky over two epochs, Roman can measure the proper motions for stars across the entire Milky Way, probing 100 times fainter than Gaia out to the very edge of the Galaxy. Here, we propose NANCY: a completely public, all-sky survey that will create a high-value legacy dataset benefiting innumerable ongoing and forthcoming studies of the universe. NANCY is a pure expression of Roman's potential: it images the entire sky, at high spatial resolution, in a broad infrared bandpass that collects as many photons as possible. The translation of AI-generated brain metastases (BM) segmentation into clinical practice relies heavily on diverse, high-quality annotated medical imaging datasets. The BraTS-METS 2023 challenge has gained momentum for testing and benchmarking algorithms using rigorously annotated internationally compiled real-world datasets. This study presents the results of the segmentation challenge and characterizes the challenging cases that impacted the performance of the winning algorithms. Untreated brain metastases on standard anatomic MRI sequences (T1, T2, FLAIR, T1PG) from eight contributed international datasets were annotated in stepwise method: published UNET algorithms, student, neuroradiologist, final approver neuroradiologist. Segmentations were ranked based on lesion-wise Dice and Hausdorff distance (HD95) scores. False positives (FP) and false negatives (FN) were rigorously penalized, receiving a score of 0 for Dice and a fixed penalty of 374 for HD95. Eight datasets comprising 1303 studies were annotated, with 402 studies (3076 lesions) released on Synapse as publicly available datasets to challenge competitors. Additionally, 31 studies (139 lesions) were held out for validation, and 59 studies (218 lesions) were used for testing. Segmentation accuracy was measured as rank across subjects, with the winning team achieving a LesionWise mean score of 7.9. Common errors among the leading teams included false negatives for small lesions and misregistration of masks in space.The BraTS-METS 2023 challenge successfully curated well-annotated, diverse datasets and identified common errors, facilitating the translation of BM segmentation across varied clinical environments and providing personalized volumetric reports to patients undergoing BM treatment.
