In this study, oxidative stress was investigated as the possible mechanism of action of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in primary brain tumors (PBT). The levels of seven OCP residues and enzymatic antioxidant biomarkers including erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase (AChE), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) along with non-enzymatic oxidative biomarkers including malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and nitric oxide (NO) were measured in blood samples of 73 patients with PBT and 104 healthy controls. A significant association was found between farming activities and PBT (55% of patients were engaged in farming activities while 45% had no farming experience). The mean levels of β-HCH, γ-HCH, 2,4 DDE, 4,4 DDE, 4,4 DDT, MDA, PC, NO, SOD, CAT, and GPx were significantly higher in PBT patients, whereas the levels of TAC, PON-1, and AChE were significantly lower in these patients. Regression analysis showed that PBT was correlated with β-HCH, γ-HCH, 2,4 DDE, 4,4 DDE, and 4,4 DDT. Based on these results, it can be concluded that OCPs and OPPs may play a role in PBT development through the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and promoting oxidative stress.

Epigenetics is the science of altering gene expression without changing nucleotide sequences and may be induced by various environmental factors, including pesticides. The aim of this study was to investigate certain epigenetic changes including the methylation of CDKN2B, CDKN2A, and MGMT gene promoters and histone modifications of H3K9ac, H4K16ac, H4K20me3, and H3K4me3, as well as their association with the levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The evaluation of OCP levels, promoter methylation, gene expression, and expression of histone modifications was performed by gas chromatography (GC), methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MS-PCR), reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR), and western blotting, respectively. The results indicated that 76.2 % of CDKN2B promoters and 85.1 % of MGMT promoters were hypermethylated in children with ALL compared to healthy children. In addition, the relative expression of CDKN2B, MGMT, H4K16ac, and H3K4me3 showed a significant decrease in children with ALL compared to healthy children. Levels of OCPs in children with ALL were significantly higher than in healthy children. Furthermore, the results revealed that the rise in the OCP levels was associated with an increase in methylation at the promoter level of CDKN2B and MGMT as well as a decrease in the relative expression of H4K16ac and H3K4me3. Therefore, it can be concluded that exposure to OCPs is associated with the induction of epigenetic changes at the level of DNA and histones, which may lead to leukemia.

Background: Organochlorine pesticide (OCP) exposure and epigenetic modifications have been well-documented in brain cancer incidence; however, their associations remain ambiguous. In this paper, we examined the effect of seven OCPs on the methylation status of two tumor suppressor genes (RRP22 and P16) and four histone marks (H4K16ac, H3K9ac, H4K20me3, and H3k4me2) in 73 patients with a primary brain tumor (PBT).Methods and results: The results of methylation-specific PCR (MSP) revealed the hypermethylation of P22 and P16 promoter regions in PBT patients. Moreover, western blot analysis demonstrated significantly low levels of H3K9ac, H4K20me3, and H3K4me2 in PBT patients in comparison with the controls. In addition, our study provides supportive evidence that OCP exposure at both high and low levels significantly affected RRP22 and P16 methylation and was related to an increased risk of glioma and PBT, respectively. We found no associations between histone modifications and exposure to OCPs in PBT incidence. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that RRP22 and P16 promoter hypermethylation, as well as H4K20 and H3K4 demethylation and H3K9 deacetylation, are significantly associated with PBT risk. Moreover, our study demonstrated that OCP exposure is related to the increased risk of PBT incidence, mainly among individuals with RRP22 and P16 promoter region methylation.

Background: Acute leukemia is a kind of aggressive disease that includes high rates of fatalities in the world, in particular in Iran. This research was done to determine the survival rate of patients with acute leukemia in Iran. Methods: 85 adult patients who were first diagnosed with acute leukemia in Shahid Bahonar hospital of Kerman during March 2012 until March 2013 were evaluated in a retrospective descriptive study to measure the death/life status in a 5-year period (2012-2017). The required data was gathered from medical records of patients, HIS system data, and the cancer registry system, and the Kaplan-Meier estimator and Log Rank test were used to calculate the survival rate using SPSS23. Results: Survival rate was completely 45.9 % for patients with acute adult leukemia. It was 47.08 % in acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and it was 43.06 % in acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). The 1,2,3,4 and 5-year survival of acute leukemia was respectively 87.1 %, 69.4 %, 62.4 %, 56.5 % and 45.9 %. Conclusion: Iran's health system should design and plan to increase the survival of patients with acute leukemia by improving the methods and facilities to diagnose and treat it more quickly and more effectively.

IntroductionInformation is a vital requirement like other human vital needs. One of the information every patient needs is about the health and ways of preventing diseases and information for their treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that there is no significant correlation among demographics variables and the health information-seeking behavior of patients with cancer in Shahid Bahonar Hospital and Javad Al-Aemeh clinic in Kerman during the academic year 2017-2018.MethodsThe research method was descriptive and the data were collected through Lango’s information-seeking behavior questionnaire. To investigate the research hypotheses, independent statistical methods and one-way ANOVA were used.ResultsThe results showed that younger patients seek health information through electronic resources as compared with other patients. Male patients were more actively receiving their health information than females, and female patients were receiving their health information through interpersonal interaction. High-educated and wealthy patients in capital cities received their health information actively on the Internet; while patients with poor-quality living standards received their health information inactively through physicians and interpersonal interaction.ConclusionsAccording to our research results, there was a significant relationship among demographic variables and people with cancer information-seeking behavior.

Background: Head and Neck (H and N) cancers include malignant tumors of the nasal cavity, pharynx, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, larynx and salivary glands. Opium use might be related to these cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between Opium and its Derivatives (O and D) use and the incidence of H and N cancers. Methods: In this case-control study conducted in Kerman, 140 patients with HandN cancers and 280 healthy controls (matched for age, gender, and place of residence) were included. Information about their use of OandD, cigarette smoking, alcohol and diet were collected using a structured questionnaire. Conditional logistic regression was used to investigate the relation between variables. Results: The use of opioids was associated with an increased risk of HandN cancers (Adjusted OR: 8.13; CI: 4.08-16.2). A significant dose-response relation between OandD use was observed, with high use Adjusted OR=8.91; 95 CI: 4.03-19.65 and low use Adjusted OR=6.52; 95 CI: 3.18-13.36. This dose-response association was stronger in patients with laryngeal cancer and opioids use, with high use Adjusted OR = 11.17; 95 CI=4.48-28.09 and low use Adjusted OR = 9.46; 95 CI= 3.97-22.52. Conclusion: The results show that opium use can be considered as an important risk factor for H and N cancers. Also in Iran, opium seems to play a more important role than cigarette smoking. © 2020, Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention.

Background This study compared efficacy and safety of TA4415V, a trastuzumab biosimilar, with reference trastuzumab in patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2–positive (HER2-positive) early-stage breast cancer treated in the neoadjuvant setting in Iran. Methods Patients were randomly assigned to receive neoadjuvant TA4415V or reference trastuzumab concurrently with docetaxel (TH phase) for 4 cycles after treatment with 4 cycles of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide (AC phase). Chemotherapy was followed by surgery. The primary endpoint was the comparison of pathologic complete response (pCR) rate in the per-protocol population. Secondary endpoints included comparisons of overall response rate (ORR), breast-conserving surgery (BCS), safety, and immunogenicity. Results Ninety-two participants were analyzed in the per-protocol population (TA4415V, n = 48; reference trastuzumab, n = 44). The pCR rates were 37.50% and 34.09% with TA4415V and reference drug, respectively. The 95% CI of the estimated treatment outcome difference (− 0·03 [95% CI − 0.23 to 0.16]) was within the non-inferiority margin. No statistically significant difference was observed between the groups for other efficacy variables in the ITT population: ORR (89.13% vs. 83.33%; p = 0.72) and BCS (20.37% vs. 12.96%; p = 0.42) in the TA4415V and reference drug group, respectively. At least one grade 3 or 4 adverse events occurred in 27 (50%) patients in the TA4415V group versus 29 (53.70%) in the reference trastuzumab group (p = 0.70). The decrease in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), as an adverse event of special interest (AESI) for trastuzumab, was compared between treatment groups in TH phase. Results demonstrated an LVEF decrease in 7 (12.96%) and 9 (16.67%) patients in TA4415V and reference trastuzumab groups, respectively (p = 0.59). Anti-drug antibodies (ADA) were not detected in any samples of groups. Conclusions Non-inferiority for efficacy was demonstrated between TA4415V and Herceptin based on the ratio of pCR rates in HER2-positive early breast cancer patients. In addition, ORR and BCS, as secondary endpoints, were not significantly different. Safety profile and immunogenicity were also comparable between the two groups.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and 14.2% of deaths in Iranian women were due to breast cancer. Objectives: The present study aimed at investigating the survival of females with breast cancer diagnosed over 14 years and its related factors in Kerman Province. Methods: This is a longitudinal study. Information about 2851 females diagnosed with breast cancer was inquired from the Cancer Registry of Kerman University of Medical Sciences from March 2001 to March 2015. Data analysis was performed by Stata 14 and SPSS 22. Results: Totally, 8511 women diagnosed with breast cancer were enrolled in this study. The median survival time among patients with grade 3 at diagnosis was 0.51 of patients with grade 1 (P = 0.016). The median survival time among patients with stage 4 at diagnosis was 0.11 of patients with stages 0 and 1 (P < 0.001). The median survival time among post-menopause patients at diagnosis was 0.65 of pre-menopause patients (P = 0.014). The median survival time among patients with secondary metastasis was 0.22 of patients without it (P < 0.001) and the median survival time among patients with hormonotherapy was 1.52 of patients without this treatment (P = 0.013). Conclusions: Early diagnosis can improve the survival of patients with breast cancer. Periodic checkups especially in menopause ages are recommended. Hormone therapy has been successful in increasing patients’ survival.

Aims: The purpose of this study is to investigate the health information behavior of people with cancer who referred to Shahid Bahonar Hospital and Jawad Alameh Clinic in Kerman city between 2017 and 2018 years. Materials and Methods: Descriptive method was used, and the data were collected through Longo's information behavior questionnaire. To test the research hypotheses, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA were used. Results: According to the data analysis, 99 (28.3%) respondents were poor, 157 (44.9%) had a moderate level of life, 65 (18.6%) had a good living standard, and 29 (8.3%) had a high level of living. According to the data analysis, 73 (20.9%) respondents were in the village, 188 (53.7%) lived in the small cities, and 89 (25.4%) were resident of the provincial capital city. Conclusion: The findings show that younger patients are more likely to seek health information and use information sources such as the Internet, social media, and medical journals. The results also proved that the male patients in comparison to the female patients receive their information more actively. The highly educated patients receive their health information actively and on the Internet. Patients with a high standard of living are actively engaged in the process of finding their health information, and poor and moderate levels of well-being receive their health information through doctors and interpersonal interactions.

Among the numerous agents, genetic factors and environmental elements such as pesticides have an important role in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence. The present study aimed to investigate the probable-role of some organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and organophosphorous pesticides (OPPs) in patients with CRC.In this case-control study, 42 patients with CRC and 30 healthy subjects were selected. The serum levels of some OCPs (α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, 2,4 DDE, 4,4 DDE, 2,4DDT and 4,4DDT) were measured by gas chromatography (GC) method. Serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) as well as the enzyme activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and arylesterase activity of Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) were evaluated in all participants. The methylation specific PCR (MSP) assay was used for determining the methylation status of CpG island of p16 and MGMT genes in CRC patients.The mean serum levels of each OCPs were significantly higher in the patient group compared to the control group (P 0.001). The AChE and arylesterase activity of PON-1 in the patient group were significantly lower than the control group (P 0.001). The mean serum levels of MDA and TAC in the serum of the patient group were significantly higher than the control group (P 0.001 and P 0.002, respectively). The current findings demonstrated significantly hypermethylation of p16 promoter in CRC patients.Regarding the higher levels of OCPs in CRC patients, along with hypermethylation of the p16 promoter gene, diminishing in AChE and PON-1 activity and increasing in oxidative stress factors, the role of OCPs and OPPs in the CRC progression in the South-East of Iran may be assumed.

Background: Bladder cancer is the second most common cancer of the genitourinary system and the eighth cause of cancer death. In addition to known risk factors such as smoking and urinary stones, trace elements are also effective in causing bladder cancer and other cancers. Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the association between bladder cancer and the carcinogens cadmium and arsenic. Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 40 patients with bladder cancer admitted to Shahid Bahonar Hospital and a control group of 40 healthy individuals in Kerman, Iran, in 2018. The serum levels of arsenic and cadmium were measured by atomic absorptiometry. The paired t-test and chi-square tests were employed to assess the difference between cases and controls groups. An unadjusted and 2 multivariable conditional regression models were separately adjusted on sex, family cancer history, residence, occupation, and smoking and were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) to assess the association between arsenic and cadmium levels and bladder cancer. The statistical software SPSS version 26 and R software version 3.6.3 were used to perform the statistical analyses. Results: The mean cadmium level was 2.99 ± 1.45 and 2.59 ± 0.46 in the case and control groups, respectively, with no statistically significant difference between the groups (P = 0.100). The mean arsenic level was 2.12 ± 1.04 and 1.43 ± 0.73 in the case and control groups, respectively, demonstrating a statistically significant difference between the groups (P = 0.001). Unadjusted and adjusted conditional logistic regression models indicated significant association between arsenic levels and bladder cancer (unadjusted: odds ratio (OR) (95% CI): 0.66 (0.46 - 0.94), P-value = 0.022; adjusted: OR (95% CI): 0.64 (0.44 - 0.92), P-value = 0.018). Conclusions: Overall, cadmium and arsenic levels are higher in patients with bladder cancer, with a statistically significant difference for arsenic. However, these elements are not interrelated and are not related to other factors.

Background: Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a heterogeneous hematological disease and certain serum factors are assumed to be involved in its pathogenesis and progression. Given this, our aim was to comparatively investigate the copper, zinc, and iron levels in MDS patients and healthy individuals. Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 31 patients with MDS (according to the WHO criteria after investigating laboratory tests such as peripheral blood smear and bone marrow aspiration) attending Bahonar Hospital, Kerman, Iran, and 31 healthy subjects from 2016 to 2018. The levels of copper, ceruloplasmin, zinc, ferritin, and iron were compared between the two groups. Results: Among the MDS patients, five individuals (16.13%) had low serum copper level (mean: 67.8 ± 4.35 µg/dl). Serum copper level was 111.3 ± 27.7 and 138.3 ± 26.6 in case and control groups, respectively (P = 0.0001). The serum zinc level and bone marrow iron level were also significantly different between the two groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Overall, it can be concluded that because only a small proportion of the MDS patients enrolled in this study were found to have lower copper levels compared with the MDS patients population, further studies with a larger sample size and also clinical trials in MDS patients with serum zinc, and copper deficiency are recommended, and post-treatment hematological reassessment would also be beneficial to achieving more definitive results.

Background: The present study aimed to investigate breast cancer trend, incidence, and mortality among Iranian women and was one of the first provincial and population-based studies to investigate breast cancer changes during 14 years in the largest province of Iran, Kerman. Methods: This was a population-based longitudinal study. Information about women diagnosed with breast cancer from 2001 to 2014 was obtained from the Cancer Registry of Kerman University of Medical Sciences. Independent-samples t test, one-way analysis of variance, linear regression, time series graphs, and fitted line plots were performed using SPSS 22 and Minitab 17.Results: A total of 2771 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in Kerman province from 2001 to 2014. The mean age of female patients was 49.52±12.88 years. The total incidence rate was 13.5 per 100,000 women and there was an increasing trend for incidence and age at diagnosis. Also, 254 women died from breast cancer during these 14 years and the mean mortality age was 54.16±14.33 years. There was also an increasing trend for mortality and age of death.Conclusion: There is an increasing trend for incidence and mortality from breast cancer in Kerman province and this requires interventions such as appropriate screening programs. Also, enabling physicians and increasing patient awareness to identify breast cancer symptoms is necessary.

Background Pancreatic cancer (PC) is ranked as the seventh leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. The current study was conducted to explore the correlation between the use of opium and its derivatives (opium) and PC in Iran. Methods In this case-control study which was conducted in Kerman province, south east part of Iran; 176 patients with PC, and 352 healthy individuals as the control group were matched in terms of age, sex, and place of residence. A structured questionnaire including questions of opium usage, alcohol usage, cigarette smoking, and diet was used to collect the data. The relation between the use of opium and PC was adjusted for tobacco smoking, education, daily intake of fruit, vegetables, red meat, and hydrogenated fats and analyzed using the conditional logistic regression. Results There was a positive relationship between the opium use and the increased risk of PC (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 4.33, 95 % CI: 2.09–8.95), which was even stronger than its association with cigarette smoking (AOR = 1.67, 95 % CI: 0.86–3.24), although their difference was not statistically significant. A significant dose-response relation was detected between the use of opium; as the relation was stronger in heavy users (AOR low users = 4.93, 95 % CI: 1.79–13.54 and AOR heavy users = 5.10, 95 % CI: 2.10−12.35). Moreover, PC was higher among participants starting the use of opium at a younger age than those who started opium at an older age (AOR = 8.03, 95 % CI: 3.19–20.23). Conclusion This study demonstrated that opium use is associated with a high and strong risk of PC as an independent risk factor. Further studies should be done to reduce the use of opium in Iran and other world countries.

Purpose Natural killer (NK) cells are cytotoxic lymphocytes, which have long been known to play an essential role in immune surveillance of tumor cells. The results of several clinical studies imply evidence of impaired activity of NK cells in acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML). The aim of this study was to investigate the gene expression of activating and inhibitory receptors of NK cells in patients with newly diagnosed AML before and after induction therapy using 7 + 3 regimen in comparison to healthy donors. Materials and methods Sixteen AML patients aged 16–64 years as well as 16 matched healthy individuals were studied. Peripheral blood samples from patients were obtained in two steps, namely, in newly diagnosed patients and 28 days after receiving induction therapy. Real-time PCR was performed to evaluate the expression levels of activating receptors, including DNAM-1 and NKp46 as well as inhibitory receptors of KIR2DL1 and NKG2A. Results Our results demonstrated that the newly diagnosed patients showed over 50% decrease in NKp46 expression and a 6-fold increase in KIR2DL1 expression compared to healthy controls. The mRNA expression analysis in patients after induction therapy suggested a significant decrease in mRNA expressions of KIR2DL1 and NKG2A in comparison to newly diagnosed patients. Conclusion Herewith, we show a statistical difference in mRNA expression levels of activating (NKp46) and inhibitory receptors from NK cells in newly diagnosed AML patients when compared with healthy controls or patients who received induction therapy, supporting the findings of researchers who reported the impaired NK cells cytotoxicity in AML patients.

Breast cancer is a multifactorial disease and its etiology is linked to multiple risk factors. There are shreds of controversial evidence that exposure to organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are important in the etiology of breast cancer. The present study aimed to determine the circulating levels of OCPs in patients with breast tumors in Southeastern of Iran. This case–control study included 27 patients with malignant breast tumors (MBT), 31 patients with benign breast tumors (BBT), and 27 healthy women as a control group. Serum OCPs levels, including α-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH), β-HCH, γ-HCH, 2,4-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (2,4-DDT), 4,4-DDT, 2,4-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (2,4-DDE), and 4,4-DDE, were measured using gas chromatography. Background: Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is one of the most challenging complications in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Estrogen is one of the suggested treatments for controlling this problem. Subjects and Methods : We performed a randomized case-control study to evaluate the efficacy of oral conjugated estrogen on HC management in 56 HSCT patients. Patients were randomly assigned to the drug group (received 6.25 mg conjugated estrogen oral tablets in a daily single dose during hematuria period) or control group. Results : The median time to complete response was 36 and 24 days in the drug and control group, respectively. The median time of down stage was 24 days in the drug group and 12 days in control group. Adjusted for HC grades, the relative risk of complete response for patients in control group was 1.613 times more than that of patients in drug group; nevertheless, not significant (p=0.122). Conclusion: Our study did not show any benefit in use of oral conjugated estrogen in the management of HC.

Aberrant patterns in promoter methylation of tumor-suppressor genes and posttranslational modifications of histone proteins are considered as major features of malignancy. In this study, we aimed to investigate promoter methylation of three tumor-suppressor genes (BRCA-1, MGMT, and P16) and three histone marks (H3K9ac, H3K18ac, and H4K20me3) in patients with breast tumors. This case-control study included 27 patients with malignant breast tumors (MBT) and 31 patients with benign breast tumors (BBT). The methylation-specific PCR was used for determining promoter methylation of BRCA-1, MGMT, and P16 genes. Western blot analysis was performed to detect histone lysine acetylation (H3K9ac and H3K18ac) and lysine methylation (H4K20me3). BRCA-1 promoter methylation was detected in 44.4% of the MBT whereas this alteration was found in 9.7% of BBT (P = 0.005). The Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that hypermethylation in BRCA-1 promoter was significantly associated with poor overall survival of patients with breast cancer (P = 0.039). MGMT promoter methylation was identified in 18.5% of MBT and 0.0% of the BBT (P = 0.01). The frequency of P16 promoter methylation was 25.8% in BBT and 11.1% in MBT (P = 0.12). As compared with BBT, MBT samples displayed the aberrant patterns of histones marks with hypomethylation of H4K20 and hypoacetylation of H3K18 (P = 0.03 and P = 0.04, respectively). There was a negative significant correlation between H3K9ac levels and tumor size in MBT group (r = -0.672; P = 0.008). The present findings suggest that promoter hypermethylation of MGMT and BRCA-1 genes along with alterations in H3K18ac and H4K20me3 levels may have prognostic values in patients with breast cancer. Moreover, the detection of these epigenetic modifications in breast tumors could be helpful in finding new methods for breast cancer therapy.

BACKGROUND Exposure to pesticides is associated with an increase in the incidence of cancer. We aimed to investigate the association of serum organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) levels and GSTM1/GSTT1 gene polymorphism with bladder cancer (BC). METHODS This study was performed on 57 patients with BC and 30 controls (C). Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, arylesterase activity of paraoxonase-1 (ARE), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were determined in serums of all participants. Genomic DNA was extracted using the salting out method and GSTM1/GSTT1 gene polymorphisms were examined by multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay. Measurement of OCPs (α-hexachlorocyclohexane [α-HCH], β-HCH, γ-HCH, 2,4-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane [2,4-DDT], 4,4-DDT, 2,4- dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene [2,4-DDE], and 4,4-DDE) in serum was carried out using an FID-equipped gas-chromatography system. RESULTS AChE activity was significantly lower, ARE activity and TAC were declined but it was not statistically significant, however, α-HCH, γ-HCH, 4,4-DDE, 2,4-DDT, and 4,4-DDT pesticides, and MDA were significantly higher in BC patients compared with the control subjects. Also, a positive correlation was found between the number of smoked cigarettes and the years of smoking with BC development. There was no association between GSTM1/GSTT1 gene polymorphisms and OCPs in BC patients. CONCLUSION Due to the higher levels of some OCPs in the BC patients, along with the reduction in AChE activity and increased MDA levels, it may be concluded that OCPs and OPs play an important role in the induction of BC in southeastern Iran.

Background: Oxidative stress is associated with the development of a large variety of malignancies. Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and arylesterase (ARE) activities, malondialdehyde (MDA), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) plasma levels in two groups of patient with breast cancer and benign breast diseases compared to healthy volunteers. Methods: The present study was composed of two groups of patients with malignant breast tumors (MBT) and benign breast diseases (BBD), and a control group (CON). Enzyme activities and antioxidants markers were measured, using spectrophotometry. Results: In both case groups, MBT and BBD, ARE was found to show lower activity compared to CON group (P = 0.004 and P = 0.014, respectively). Lower activity of AChE was found in both MBT and BBD compared to CON subjects (P = 0.003 and P = 0.034, respectively). The mean plasma levels of MDA in both groups of patients MBT and BBD were higher than those in CON (P < 0.001 for both comparisons). No significant differences were detected between groups regarding the mean levels of TAC. Conclusions: The results obtained from the current study indicate that healthy subjects show a different redox status than patients with MBT and BBD. Our data suggest that erythrocyte AChE may be considered as an indicator of oxidative stress along with other factors in patients with breast tumors. Thus, consuming antioxidant supplements can be helpful for the prevention of breast diseases.

and Purpose: Using of herbal medicines is common for cancer treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, reasons, and predicting factors for the use of herbal medicines by Iranian cancer patients.We conducted this cross-sectional study on 315 cancer patients through face-to-face interview in Kerman, Southeast of Iran, 2017.In total, 267 (84.1%) patients used at least one herbal medicine during chemotherapy courses, while only 42 (16.1%) patients discussed the use of herbal medicines with physicians. Living in urban regions (OR, 2.56; 95% CI, 1.30-5.05; P0.0001) and the experience of constipation and diarrhea (OR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.09-4.05; P = 0.02) were determined as some predicting factors for the use of herbal medicines.Our findings indicate that as herbal medicines are common among cancer patients and their use is often overlooked, physicians should pay particular attention to herbal medicines during chemotherapy.

Background and objective: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women. The Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is the treatment of choice for non-operable tumors. The Ki67 is a proliferation marker that can be used to predict the therapeutic response to chemotherapy and the patients' prognosis. Methods: This retrospective study was carried out on 55 consecutive patients with breast cancer referred to a Training Tertiary Healthcare Center in Kerman, Iran since 2009 to 2014. After diagnostic approval, the tissue samples of patients were examined for estrogen and progesterone receptors, ki67 and HER2-neu markers by using immunohistochemical staining. Then the patients were treated with 6 cycles of Neoadjuvant chemotherapy regimens by Doxorubicin and Taxans or 4 chemotherapy cycles, containing Anthracycline and Cyclophosphamide and 4 cycles of Paclitaxel. After mastectomy, their samples were reexamined for ki67 again and classified into three groups (low: ki67 30%). Results: Before chemotherapy, 54.5% of the patients had high expression of Ki67. But after chemotherapy, 52.7 of the patients had complete therapeutic response showing that the Ki67 level was reduced significantly (P=0.003). Conclusion: Before and after Neoadjuvant chemotherapy, Ki67 measurements may be used as a predictive marker of therapeutic response.
