Abstract Coffee, tea and caffeinated foods are popular in the world due to their high amount of caffeine, which are consumed daily by people in large quantities, and their effects on the body, especially the liver, are somewhat unknown, so this study was done with the aim of relationship between coffee and tea consumption and dietary intake of Caffeine on the serum liver enzymes and lipid profile. In this cross-sectional study the information of 8889 participants aged 35–70 years who referred to the Rafsanjan Cohort Study (RCS), a population-based prospective cohort that is a part of the Prospective epidemiological research studies in Iran (PERSIAN), was used. Demographic characteristics, medical history, consumption of coffee and tea, caffeine intake, and laboratory tests were collected. Dichotomous logistics regression models were used using crude and adjusted models to investigate the relationship between coffee, tea consumption, and caffeine intake with liver enzymes and lipid profile. Out of 8889 participants 4678 (52.6%) were female and 4211 (47.4%) were male. In older people, especially men, the consumption of tea and coffee increased and has a direct relationship with the abnormality of total cholesterol (TC) (OR 1.14; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.29). Also, it was observed that increased abnormal Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (OR 1.22; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.52) and decreased abnormal serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) (OR 0.65; 95% CI 0.46 to 0.93) were significantly associated with a high intake of caffeine. The other variables related to lipid profile and liver enzymes increased with increasing consumption of coffee, tea and intake of caffeine in participants, but did not show a significant increase. A high intake of caffeine and coffee and tea can have adverse effects on some liver enzymes and blood factors. Therefore, care should be taken when using these materials.

Background: Allergic asthma is a chronic and inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract, which is characterized by inflammation, airway obstruction and swelling. Anti-inflammatory compounds can be used to improve the disease severity. Hypericum perforatum (HP)/ St. John’s wort has been used in the treatment of many diseases due to its anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the effects of HP on TH1 and TH2 parameters in an animal model of allergic asthma. Methods: Thirty BALB/c mice were sensitized with subcutaneous injection and inhalation of ovalbumin and then administered different doses of HP post-sensitization. Histological analysis of the lungs was performed. The effects of HP on mRNA expression of T-bet and GATA3 (TH1 and TH2 transcription factors, respectively), IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10 in the spleen were determined by real-time PCR. The protein levels of IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10 cytokines were also determined by ELISA technique in the serum of mice. Results: HP extract (HPE) reduced the clinical severity in asthma-induced mice, and a reduction in the inflammatory cell infiltration in the lung. Furthermore, treatment with HPE inhibited asthma-related mediators as well as increased the anti-inflammatory parameters compared to the control. The study also showed that treatment with HPE significantly increased IFN-γ, IL-10 and T-bet, while decreasing the level of IL-4 and GATA3 in mice treated with HPE. Conclusion: The data indicated that HPE can attenuate allergic asthma autoimmune responses by inhibiting infiltration of immune cell in the lung and TH2-related parameters. It is reasonable to assume that HPE has significant effects in the treatment of allergic asthma.

Dengue fever, an arboviral disease primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, poses a significant public health concern globally. Key vectors, such as Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Aedes cinereus, are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, affecting over 140 countries. These species are also found in Iran, particularly in the southern, southeastern, and northern regions. Diagnosing dengue fever presents challenges, including differentiating it from other febrile illnesses and recognizing early warning signs of severe dengue. Symptoms typically include acute fever, warning signs of severe illness, and potential complications. The clinical progression of dengue includes three phases: the febrile phase, critical phase, and recovery phase. A comprehensive understanding of clinical manifestations, prognostic indicators, diagnostic algorithms, and laboratory methods is crucial for accurate diagnosis, risk assessment, and effective disease management. Given the absence of specific antiviral treatments or vaccines for dengue, supportive care and symptomatic treatment remain essential. This narrative review discusses the management of dengue fever, focusing on supportive care, fluid management, antipyretic and analgesic medications, and antiviral treatments. Additionally, it reviews potential future treatment strategies and emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and prompt medical intervention in improving patient outcomes. The study also explores immunological targets, vaccine platforms, clinical trials, and future prospects for dengue vaccination. Furthermore, it presents prevention strategies targeting Aedes mosquitoes and outlines the challenges that lie ahead. By adopting a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach, we can pave the way for advancements in the prevention and control of dengue fever related to Aedes mosquito transmission. Continued research efforts, innovative collaborations, and public health training are vital to combat dengue fever and reduce its burden on affected populations worldwide.

Abstract Background Interleukin-17 (IL-17) family plays a role in the pathogenesis of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by contributing to the inflammatory and destructive processes in the affected joint. This study aimed to measure levels of IL-17 A and IL-25 (IL-17E) in serum of KOA patients and determine their roles in the disease severity of patients. Methods In this, 34 patients with KOA and 30 age and sex-matched healthy subjects (HS) were enrolled. Background: One of the inflammatory diseases of the respiratory system is asthma. Teucrium polium (TP) has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties and its anti-asthmatic effects have not been investigated yet. RORγt is an inflammatory transcription factor for Th17 differentiation. By secreting IL-17, Th17 leads to neutrophilic inflammation in the lungs. As an anti-inflammatory cytokine, IL-10 reduces the dissemination of inflammatory elements in the airways.Objective: To evaluate the effect of TP extract in asthma treatment.Methods: Thirty female Balb/c mice were distributed into 5 groups (n=6) including the control, treated with ovalbumin (OVA), and OVA+ various doses of TP (50, 150, and 300 mg/kg). All groups except the control group were sensitized to OVA solution on days 0, 7, and 14 by subcutaneous injection. The challenge was performed on days 18 to 21 by the inhalation of 1% OVA and the treatment was done with TP extract in the treatment groups, half an hour before the challenge. On day 22, the serum and spleen samples were collected to determine IL-10 serum levels and RORγt gene expression, respectively.Results: In the treatment groups, the expression of RORγt significantly decreased when using OVA+ Tp extract (150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg), and IL-10 serum levels significantly increased when using OVA+ TP extract (150 mg/kg) compared with the OVA group.Conclusion: It is possible that TP extract can be effective in improving asthma by reducing inflammation.

Asthma is a chronic disorder characterized by airway overreaction and remodeling, eosinophilia, and neutrophilic inflammation, accompanied by thickening of the airways and breathlessness. Teucrium polium (TP) is a plant with anti-inflammatory properties and is considered for the treatment of allergic disorders. In this study, we examined the effects of TP extract on ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthma. Thirty female mice (5–6 weeks old) were divided into 5 groups of 6 each, including a control group and 4 groups treated with OVA, OVA + TP extract (50 mg/kg), OVA + TP extract (150 mg/kg), OVA + TP extract (300 mg/kg). Twenty-four hours after the last treatment, lung, serum, and spleen samples were collected and used for the evaluation of leukocyte infiltration, serum cytokine Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) levels, and the expression of the Interleukin-12A (IL12A) gene, respectively. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used to evaluate pathological changes in the lung tissue sections. Treatment with TP extract reduced inflammatory cells such as eosinophils and neutrophils in the airways. Furthermore, it increased serum levels of IFN-γ and IL-12A at a dose of 50, 150, and 300 mg/kg compared to the OVA group. This study showed that the administration of TP extract could improve pathological features, such as airway inflammation, and reduce systemic inflammation.
