Abstract

The influence of measurement back action on electro-optic sampling of electromagnetic quantum fluctuations is investigated. Based on a cascaded treatment of the nonlinear interaction between a near-infrared coherent probe and the mid-infrared vacuum, we account for the generated electric-field contributions that lead to detectable back action. Specifically, we theoretically address two realistic setups, exploiting one or two probe beams for the nonlinear interaction with the quantum vacuum, respectively. The setup parameters at which back action starts to considerably contaminate the measured noise profiles are determined. Due to the vacuum fluctuations entering at the beam splitter, the shot noise of two incoming probe pulses in different channels is uncorrelated. This leads to the absence of the base-level shot noise in the correlation, while further contributions due to nonlinear shot-noise enhancement are still present. Ultimately, the regime in which electro-optic sampling of quantum fields can be considered as effectively back-action free is found., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, plus Supplemental Material (12 pages)

2. Heat percolation in many-body flatband localizing systems

Abstract

Translationally invariant finetuned single-particle lattice Hamiltonians host flat bands only. Suitable short-range many-body interactions result in complete suppression of particle transport due to local constraints and Many-Body Flatband Localization. Heat can still flow between spatially locked charges. We show that heat transport is forbidden in dimension one. In higher dimensions heat transport can be unlocked by tuning filling fractions across a percolation transition for suitable lattice geometries. Transport in percolation clusters is additionally affected by effective bulk disorder and edge scattering induced by the local constraints, which work in favor of arresting the heat flow. We discuss explicit examples in one and two dimensions.

Abstract

We provide numerical evidence for a temporal quantum-mechanical interference phenomenon: time molecules (TM). A variety of such stroboscopic states are observed in the dynamics of two interacting qubits subject to a periodic sequence of $\pi$-pulses with the period $T$. The TMs appear periodically in time and have a large duration, $\delta t_\mathrm{TM} \gg T$. All TMs demonstrate an almost zero value of the total polarization and a strong enhancement of the entanglement entropy $S$ up to the maximum value $S=\ln 2$ of a corresponding Bell state. The TMs are generated by the commensurability of the Floquet eigenvalues and the presence of maximally entangled Floquet eigenstates. The TMs remain stable with detuned system parameters and with an increased number of qubits. 4. Nonequilibrium Theory of Photoinduced Valley Hall Effect

Abstract

A recent scientific debate has arisen: Which processes underlie the actual ground of the valley Hall effect (VHE) in two-dimensional materials? The original VHE emerges in samples with ballistic transport of electrons due to the anomalous velocity terms resulting from the Berry phase effect. In disordered samples though, alternative mechanisms associated with electron scattering off impurities have been suggested: (i) asymmetric electron scattering, called skew scattering, and (ii) a shift of the electron wave packet in real space, called a side jump. It has been claimed that the side jump not only contributes to the VHE but fully offsets the anomalous terms regardless of the drag force for fundamental reasons and, thus, the side-jump together with skew scattering become the dominant mechanisms. However, this claim is based on equilibrium theories without any external valley-selective optical pumping, which makes the results fundamentally interesting but incomplete and impracticable. We develop in this paper a microscopic theory of the photoinduced VHE using the Keldysh nonequilibrium diagrammatic technique and find that the asymmetric skew scattering mechanism is dominant in the vicinity of the interband absorption edge. This allows us to explain the operation of optical transistors based on the VHE.

5. Almost compact moving breathers with fine-tuned discrete time quantum walks

Abstract

Discrete time quantum walks are unitary maps defined on the Hilbert space of coupled two-level systems. We study the dynamics of excitations in a nonlinear discrete time quantum walk, whose fine-tuned linear counterpart has a flat band structure. The linear counterpart is, therefore, lacking transport, with exact solutions being compactly localized. A solitary entity of the nonlinear walk moving at velocity $v$ would therefore not suffer from resonances with small amplitude plane waves with identical phase velocity, due to the absence of the latter. That solitary excitation would also have to be localized stronger than exponential, due to the absence of a linear dispersion. We report on the existence of a set of stationary and moving breathers with almost compact superexponential spatial tails. At the limit of the largest velocity $v=1$ the moving breather turns into a completely compact bullet., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Many-body localization (MBL) is a result of the balance between interference-based Anderson localization and many-body interactions in an ultra-high dimensional Fock space. It is usually expected that dissipation is blurring interference and destroying that balance so that the asymptotic state of a system with an MBL Hamiltonian does not bear localization signatures. We demonstrate, within the framework of the Lindblad formalism, that the system can be brought into a steady state with non-vanishing MBL signatures. We use a set of dissipative operators acting on pairs of connected sites (or spins), and show that the difference between ergodic and MBL Hamiltonians is encoded in the imbalance, entanglement entropy, and level spacing characteristics of the density operator. An MBL system which is exposed to the combined impact of local dephasing and pairwise dissipation evinces localization signatures hitherto absent in the dephasing-outshaped steady state., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

7. Anderson localization in generalized discrete time quantum walks

Abstract

We study Anderson localization in a generalized discrete time quantum walk - a unitary map related to a Floquet driven quantum lattice. It is controlled by a quantum coin matrix which depends on four angles with the meaning of potential and kinetic energy, and external and internal synthetic flux. Such quantum coins can be engineered with microwave pulses in qubit chains. The ordered case yields a two-band eigenvalue structure on the unit circle which becomes completely flat in the limit of vanishing kinetic energy. Disorder in the external magnetic field does not impact localization. Disorder in all the remaining angles yields Anderson localization. In particular, kinetic energy disorder leads to logarithmic divergence of the localization length at spectral symmetry points. Strong disorder in potential and internal magnetic field energies allows to obtain analytical expressions for spectrally independent localization length which is highly useful for various applications., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Research on magnetic confinement of high-temperature plasmas has the ultimate goal of harnessing nuclear fusion for the production of electricity. Although the tokamak1 is the leading toroidal magnetic-confinement concept, it is not without shortcomings and the fusion community has therefore also pursued alternative concepts such as the stellarator. Unlike axisymmetric tokamaks, stellarators possess a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field geometry. The availability of this additional dimension opens up an extensive configuration space for computational optimization of both the field geometry itself and the current-carrying coils that produce it. Such an optimization was undertaken in designing Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X)2, a large helical-axis advanced stellarator (HELIAS), which began operation in 2015 at Greifswald, Germany. A major drawback of 3D magnetic field geometry, however, is that it introduces a strong temperature dependence into the stellarator’s non-turbulent ‘neoclassical’ energy transport. Indeed, such energy losses will become prohibitive in high-temperature reactor plasmas unless a strong reduction of the geometrical factor associated with this transport can be achieved; such a reduction was therefore a principal goal of the design of W7-X. In spite of the modest heating power currently available, W7-X has already been able to achieve high-temperature plasma conditions during its 2017 and 2018 experimental campaigns, producing record values of the fusion triple product for such stellarator plasmas3,4. The triple product of plasma density, ion temperature and energy confinement time is used in fusion research as a figure of merit, as it must attain a certain threshold value before net-energy-producing operation of a reactor becomes possible1,5. Here we demonstrate that such record values provide evidence for reduced neoclassical energy transport in W7-X, as the plasma profiles that produced these results could not have been obtained in stellarators lacking a comparably high level of neoclassical optimization., Previously documented record values of the fusion triple product in the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X are shown to be evidence for reduced neoclassical energy transport in this optimized device.

Abstract

The two leading concepts for confining high-temperature fusion plasmas are the tokamak and the stellarator. Tokamaks are rotationally symmetric and use a large plasma current to achieve confinement, whereas stellarators are non-axisymmetric and employ three-dimensionally shaped magnetic field coils to twist the field and confine the plasma. As a result, the magnetic field of a stellarator needs to be carefully designed to minimize the collisional transport arising from poorly confined particle orbits, which would otherwise cause excessive power losses at high plasma temperatures. In addition, this type of transport leads to the appearance of a net toroidal plasma current, the so-called bootstrap current. Here, we analyse results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, showing that its magnetic-field design allows good control of bootstrap currents and collisional transport. The energy confinement time is among the best ever achieved in stellarators, both in absolute figures (τE > 100 ms) and relative to the stellarator confinement scaling. The bootstrap current responds as predicted to changes in the magnetic mirror ratio. These initial experiments confirm several theoretically predicted properties of Wendelstein 7-X plasmas, and already indicate consistency with optimization measures. Results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator demonstrate that its magnetic-field design grants good control of parasitic plasma currents, leading to long energy confinement times.

Abstract

Wendelstein 7-X is the first comprehensively optimized stellarator aiming at good confinement with plasma parameters relevant to a future stellarator power plant. Plasma operation started in 2015 using a limiter configuration. After installing an uncooled magnetic island divertor, extending the energy limit from 4 to 80 MJ, operation continued in 2017. For this phase, the electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) capability was extended to 7 MW, and hydrogen pellet injection was implemented. The enhancements resulted in the highest triple product (6.5 × 1019 keV m-3 s) achieved in a stellarator until now. Plasma conditions [Te(0) ≈ Ti(0) ≈ 3.8 keV, τE > 200 ms] already were in the stellarator reactor-relevant ion-root plasma transport regime. Stable operation above the 2nd harmonic ECRH X-mode cutoff was demonstrated, which is instrumental for achieving high plasma densities in Wendelstein 7-X. Further important developments include the confirmation of low intrinsic error fields, the observation of current-drive induced instabilities, and first fast ion heating and confinement experiments. The efficacy of the magnetic island divertor was instrumental in achieving high performance in Wendelstein 7-X. Symmetrization of the heat loads between the ten divertor modules could be achieved by external resonant magnetic fields. Full divertor power detachment facilitated the extension of high power plasmas significantly beyond the energy limit of 80 MJ.

Abstract

Discrete time quantum walks are unitary maps defined on the Hilbert space of coupled two-level systems. We study the dynamics of excitations in a nonlinear discrete time quantum walk, whose fine-tuned linear counterpart has a flat band structure. The linear counterpart is, therefore, lacking transport, with exact solutions being compactly localized. A solitary entity of the nonlinear walk moving at velocity v would, therefore, not suffer from resonances with small amplitude plane waves with identical phase velocity, due to the absence of the latter. That solitary excitation would also have to be localized stronger than exponential, due to the absence of a linear dispersion. We report on the existence of a set of stationary and moving breathers with almost compact superexponential spatial tails. At the limit of the largest velocity v = 1 , the moving breather turns into a completely compact bullet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A theoretical study of the phenomenon of Anderson localization in a generalized discrete time quantum walk will be reported. The generalized discrete time quantum walk is controlled by a quantum coin unitary matrix on each step of particle motion. The quantum coin matrix depends on four angles that can be engineered with microwave pulses in qubit chains. In the absence of disorder in quantum coins parameters the quantum walk dynamics is determined by two-bands dispersion relationship which becomes completely flat in the limit of vanishing kinetic energy. Various types of disorder result in the localization of quantum particle. In particular, kinetic energy disorder leads to logarithmic divergence of the localization length at spectral symmetry points. By making use of the transfer matrix technique we were able to obtain analytical expressions for the frequency dependent localization length in two limits, i.e. weak and strong disorder, and we anticipate that it will be useful for various applications. We study Anderson localization in discrete-time quantum map dynamics in one dimension with nearest-neighbor hopping strength θ and quasienergies located on the unit circle. We demonstrate that strong disorder in a local phase field yields a uniform spectrum gaplessly occupying the entire unit circle. The resulting eigenstates are exponentially localized. Remarkably this Anderson localization is universal as all eigenstates have one and the same localization length Lloc. We present an exact theory for the calculation of the localization length as a function of the hopping, 1/Lloc=|ln⁡(|sin⁡(θ)|)|, which is tunable between zero and infinity by variation of the hopping θ., (© 2023 Author(s). 26. Wave Packet Spreading with Disordered Nonlinear Discrete-Time Quantum Walks.

Abstract

We use a novel unitary map toolbox-discrete-time quantum walks originally designed for quantum computing-to implement ultrafast computer simulations of extremely slow dynamics in a nonlinear and disordered medium. Previous reports on wave packet spreading in Gross-Pitaevskii lattices observed subdiffusion with the second moment m_{2}∼t^{1/3} (with time in units of a characteristic scale t_{0}) up to the largest computed times of the order of 10^{8}. A fundamental and controversially debated question-whether this process can continue ad infinitum, or has to slow down-stands unresolved. Current experimental devices are not capable to even reach 1/10^{4} of the reported computational horizons. With our toolbox, we outperform previous computational results and observe that the universal subdiffusion persists over an additional four decades reaching "astronomic" times 2×10^{12}. Such a dramatic extension of previous computational horizons suggests that subdiffusion is universal, and that the toolbox can be efficiently used to assess other hard computational many-body problems.
