Abstract

The fruits of the nopal (Opuntia spp.), cactus pears, are considered functional foods due to their content of nutritive and bioactive substances. Its pulp is generated by numerous seeds that limit their consumption due to their size and hardness and detract from their quality. Other undesirable fruit characteristics are its inedible peel and its short shelf life. In the case of the cactus pear cactus (Opuntia spp.), no cultivar has been reported that produces quality parthenocarpic fruits, nor have they been obtained by artificially inducing parthenocarpy. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the response of 11 genotypes to the induction of parthenocarpy, to characterize the fruits of the genotypes with the best response, and to determine their postharvest life. To induce parthenocarpy, floral buds were used in the pre-anthesis stage, from which the style-stigma, stamens, and tepals were removed, generating a cavity in which a solution of growth regulators was applied (250 mg L−1 AG3 + 75 mg L −1 BA + 15 mg L−1 of AIB). A similar number of buds was used as a control, without treatment, and in free pollination. Only two genotypes, MX CP-30 Red and MX CP-40 Yellow, produced parthenocarpic fruits since their empty integuments produced pulp, remaining small, empty, and soft. 22. Reproductive system and activity patterns of Philornis downsi(Diptera: Muscidae)

Abstract

Philornis downsi(Dodge & Aitken), the avian vampire fly, is the main threat to land bird conservation in the Galapagos Islands. However, very little is known about the reproductive morphology, physiology, and behavior of P. downsiadults impeding progress on developing effective methods for its control. Here, we provide the first preliminary description of the female and male reproductive systems of a Philornisspecies and compare the activity of lab-reared and wild flies. In mature females, the accessory glands are connected from the common oviduct toward the ovaries, and there are 3 spermathecae (1 double and 1 singlet). For males, we found 2 peanut-shaped testes, one possible accessory gland, an apodeme, and an aedeagus. Both wild and lab-reared individuals had similar patterns of movement, although lab-reared adults were more mobile at dusk. We observed higher locomotion in the morning and dusk with a lull at midday, and increased activity as flies aged from 1 to 10 days. Females became more active during the morning at 10 days of age compared to males. Knowledge on the morphology of P. downsi’sreproductive system will give us a better understanding of its reproductive physiology and will aid in efforts at establishing a self-reproducing colony. Mobility trials can be used as an easy and practical quality control method, as well as providing essential information on peak activity times, which may be related to foraging in the morning for females and sexual activity and host searching at dusk.Graphical Abstract

23. A low-cost and portable option for macro photography

Abstract

Introducing an affordable and portable option for macro photography. In the world of macro photography there is a whole range of qualities and prices; however, the system that we present in the following pages prioritizes two elements: low cost and portability. This system proposal arose as a response to the need to photograph important specimens during visits to entomological collections. Although many of the collections have photographic equipment, this can be very sophisticated, and the visitor may have to invest time of their visit -an often-scarce resource- to learn how to properly use the available equipment. It also often happens that at the time of the visit the equipment is being used by other visitors or by the collections curatorial staff. Therefore, we think about the possibility that a visitor brings with them a photography system that allows them to capture quality images and that does not imply very high costs. We present two configurations for this macro photography system, one for capturing images of full insect specimens and one for photographing genital structures. We provide links to review and purchase each part of the system in its two configurations. Although the links currently redirect to the purchase page of the exact product that makes up the system, a future user could buy the same or look for something similar depending on their needs and budget. Finally, it is worth mentioning that this system can also function as fixed equipment to photograph specimens in laboratories and entomological collections.

Abstract

The presence of pollinator insects and their association with wild plants in the Tetzcotzingo System Reserve is reported. Fourteen species of the families Apidae, Crabronidae, Halictidae, Megachilidae, Tiphiidae, and Vespidae were identified. Pollinators were found in seven species of Asteraceae, Cactaceae, Lamiceae, and Polemoniaceae. The European honeybee, Apis mellifera L., was the pollinator most often present in the reserve. The greatest European honeybee-plant interaction was with Baccharis pteronioides (DC) (Asteraceae). The number of registered pollinators increased for B. pteronioides, Gymnosperma glutinosum (Spreng.) (Asteraceae), Ipomoea stans Cav (Convulvulaceae), Leonotis nepetifolia (L.) R.Br.
