Abstract

Most pyroclastic deposits of Popocatépetl volcano were emplaced at high temperatures and have similar mafic to more evolved compositions, suggesting a long‐lived, interconnected magma environment. We performed a magnetic and microscopic study on different eruptive sequences, Plain Language Summary: Explosive eruptions of volcanoes are a dangerous threat to human settlements. In this study, we investigated pyroclastic material from the last 14 ky of Popocatépetl volcano using magnetic mineral assemblages, hysteresis properties, and temperature‐ and field‐dependent magnetic susceptibility. The data are suited to separate different eruption phases and provide information on the volcanic material history and emplacement conditions. Magnetic susceptibility analyses are suggested to be a complementary tool to the paleomagnetic directional analysis for the determination of emplacement temperatures., Key Points: Several Curie temperatures were observed in pyroclastic deposits. 7. Late Holocene drying of Port Phillip Bay: archaeological and cultural perspectives.

Abstract

Evidence from bay floor channelling, seismic surveys and core dating has been used to suggest that Port Phillip Bay dried out for a period between about 2800 and 1000 cal. yr BP as sandbars blocked it off from the sea. This model is now supported by the examination of radiocarbon ages from archaeological excavations of Aboriginal shell middens on the shoreline of the Mornington Peninsula on Bunurong Country. This shows a near-continuous use of marine resources by Bunurong people over the last 6000 years for areas south of Rosebud, while those to the north are only of more recent date, following the refilling of the bay in the last millennium. This study provides an example of the integration of traditional, archaeological and geoscience evidence and the way in which local environmental changes impact on society. Radiocarbon dates from Aboriginal places support the argument that a sandbar blocked much of Port Phillip Bay from the sea between about 2800 and 1000 cal. yr BP. Dates from Aboriginal places south of the sand bar show continuity since the bay formed following the post-Pleistocene rise in sea-levels. Dates north of the sandbar indicate that Aboriginal people began exploiting marine resources in this area once the bay refilled about 1000 years ago. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Wetland sediments are valuable archives of environmental change but can be challenging to date. Terrestrial macrofossils are often sparse, resulting in radiocarbon (14C) dating of less desirable organic fractions. An alternative approach for capturing changes in atmospheric 14C is the use of terrestrial microfossils. We 14C date pollen microfossils from two Australian wetland sediment sequences and compare these to ages from other sediment fractions (n = 56). For the Holocene Lake Werri Berri record, pollen 14C ages are consistent with 14C ages on bulk sediment and humic acids (n = 14), whilst Stable Polycyclic Aromatic Carbon (SPAC) 14C ages (n = 4) are significantly younger. For Welsby Lagoon, pollen concentrate 14C ages (n = 21) provide a stratigraphically coherent sequence back to 50 ka BP. 14C ages from humic acid and >100 µm fractions (n = 13) are inconsistent, and often substantially younger than pollen ages. Our comparison of Bayesian age-depth models, developed in Oxcal, Bacon and Undatable, highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the different programs for straightforward and more complex chrono-stratigraphic records. All models display broad similarities but differences in modeled age-uncertainty, particularly when age constraints are sparse. Intensive dating of wetland sequences improves the identification of outliers and generation of robust age models, regardless of program used.

Abstract

The initial peopling of the remote Pacific islands was one of the greatest migrations in human history, beginning three millennia ago by Lapita cultural groups. The spread of Lapita out of an ancestral Asian homeland is a dominant narrative in the origins of Pacific peoples, and although Island New Guinea has long been recognized as a springboard for the peopling of Oceania, the role of Indigenous populations in this remarkable phase of exploration remains largely untested. Here, we report the earliest evidence for Lapita-introduced animals, turtle bone technology and repeated obsidian import in southern New Guinea 3,480-3,060 years ago, synchronous with the establishment of the earliest known Lapita settlements 700 km away. Our findings precede sustained Lapita migrations and pottery introductions by several centuries, occur alongside Indigenous technologies and suggest continued multicultural influences on population diversity despite language replacement. Our work shows that initial Lapita expansion throughout Island New Guinea was more expansive than previously considered, with Indigenous contact influencing migration pathways and island-hopping strategies that culminated in rapid and purposeful Pacific-wide settlement. Later Lapita dispersals through New Guinea were facilitated by earlier contact with Indigenous populations and profoundly influenced the region as a global centre of cultural and linguistic diversity.

Abstract

The Chronos 14Carbon-Cycle Facility is a new radiocarbon laboratory at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Built around an Ionplus 200 kV MIni-CArbon DAting System (MICADAS) Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) installed in October 2019, the facility was established to address major challenges in the Earth, Environmental and Archaeological sciences. Here we report an overview of the Chronos facility, the pretreatment methods currently employed (bones, carbonates, peat, pollen, charcoal, and wood) and results of radiocarbon and stable isotope measurements undertaken on a wide range of sample types. Measurements on international standards, known-age and blank samples demonstrate the facility is capable of measuring 14C samples from the Anthropocene back to nearly 50,000 years ago. Future work will focus on improving our understanding of the Earth system and managing resources in a future warmer world.

22. A chronology for the earliest human burials at Cuchipuy, central Chile

Abstract

Cuchipuy is an archaeological site within the ancient Laguna de Tagua Tagua area (O’Higgins Region, central Chile; known for containing the remains of extinct fauna), with evidence for cultural activity spanning most of the Holocene, including over 50 human burials. The bulk of chronometric work at Cuchipuy was carried out in the 1980s, where a discrepancy within the radiocarbon dating results raised questions on the antiquity of the oldest funerary deposits (Stratum 4). Given the importance of both the site and area in prehistoric studies, this analysis aimed to reassess the chronology of Stratum 4 through the production of new radiocarbon dates on human remains and the application of Bayesian modelling. When combined with previously published ages, results place the commencement of Stratum 4 at 7320–7160 cal BP, within the early-mid Holocene. This is later than previous conclusions based on the discrepant dataset, refuting a temporal connection to Paleoindian deposits within the region. In addition, stable light isotope results suggest that human diet during the period was diverse, relying on both terrestrial and freshwater aquatic resources. This pattern changes with later populations, however, where the isotopic signal reflects the consumption of mainly terrestrial resources.

Abstract

Objetivo: Determinar las características antropométricas maternas y del lactante correlacionados a la concentración proteica del calostro y la leche madura en el Hospital "El Carmen", Huancayo. Método: Estudio analítico, longitudinal, correlacional; Muestra: 35 (madres y lactantes), quienes cumplían criterios de selección. Instrumento: ficha de recolección de datos consignando las medidas antropométricas maternas, del lactante y resultados de concentración proteica del calostro y leche madura; medición de variables en dos fases (Al parto y cuarto mes post- parto). Se utilizó correlación R de Spearman, Pearson y regresión logística multivariada. Resultados: La mediana de edad de las madres fue de 20 años, el IMC promedio pre- gestacional fue 23,55, mediana pre- parto fue de 26,71, y cuarto mes post- parto fue de 24,42; En los lactantes el sexo predominante fue el femenino 54,29%, la mediana del peso al nacer fue 3.030 kg y a los 4 meses tuvieron un peso promedio de 6,580 kg. El análisis bivariado mostró significancia estadística entre la concentración de proteínas del calostro y peso al cuarto mes (p=0.0119) y la concentración de proteínas de leche madura con respecto a la talla del lactante al cuarto mes (p=0.0041). Abstract

© 2018, Cancer Research UK. Background: Optimal duration of anticoagulation for cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) remains unclear. This study assessed D-dimer (DD) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels after the withdrawal of anticoagulation treatment to predict the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) recurrence among patients with CAT. Methods: Prospective, multicentre study to evaluate CAT with ≥3 months of anticoagulation that was subsequently discontinued. Blood samples were taken when patients stopped the anticoagulation and 21 days later to determine the DD and hs-CRP levels. All patients were followed up for 6 months to detect VTE recurrence. Results: Between 2013 and 2015, 325 patients were evaluated and 114 patients were ultimately enrolled in the study. The mean age was 62 ± 14 years and nearly 40% had metastasis. Ten patients developed VTE recurrence within 6 months (8.8%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.3–15.5%). The DD and hs-CRP levels after 21 days were associated with VTE recurrence. The subdistribution hazard ratios were 9.82 for hs-CRP (95% CI: 19–52) and 5.81 for DD (95% CI: 1.1–31.7). Conclusions: This study identified that hs-CRP and DD were potential biomarkers of VTE recurrence after discontinuation of anticoagulation in CAT. A risk-adapted strategy could identify low-risk patients who may benefit from discontinuation of anticoagulation.

Objective: To determine maternal and infant anthropometric characteristics correlated to protein concentration of colostrum and mature milk in the Hospital "El Carmen", Huancayo Method: analytical, correlational longitudinal study; Shows: 35 (mothers and infants) who met the selection criteria. Instrument: data collection sheet consigning maternal anthropometric measurements, infant and results of protein concentration of colostrum and mature milk; measurement variables in two phases (Al childbirth and fourth month postpartum). Spearman correlation R, Pearson and multivariate logistic regression was used. Results: The median age of the mothers was 20 years, mean BMI was pre- gestational 23.55, median pre- delivery was 26.71, and fourth month postpartum was 24.42; In infants the predominant female sex was 54.29%, the median birth weight was 3,030 kg and at 4 months had an average weight of 6,580 kg. Abstract

The Xalapa monogenetic volcanic field, Veracruz, Mexico is located at the eastern end of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. This study uses specimens from 0.8 ka to 5.96 ± 0.156 Ma Xalapa lava deposits and from 4.5 ± 0.028 Ma La Concha ignimbrite. The study identifies the magnetic mineralogy by reflected light microscopy, thermomagnetic curves, and coercivity estimates. It further defines the magnetic domain size distribution by hysteresis plots, Day diagrams, and first-order-reversal-curves. Characteristic remanent directions and virtual geomagnetic poles are also calculated. The characteristic remanent directions are used to establish the magnetostratigraphy and to identify the net rotation experienced, at each site, since the emplacement. The results allow the identification of the rotation domains, and R'-, P-, and Y-shears, active since the past ~2.5 m.y. in the region and a better characterization of the displacement along the Río Actopan fault, active in the Xalapa monogenetic volcanic field. Abstract

Filiació URV: SI, Kaldar Cave is a key archaeological site that provides evidence of the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition in Iran. Excavations at the site in 2014-2015 led to the discovery of cultural remains generally associated with anatomically modern humans (AMHs) and evidence of a probable Neanderthal-made industry in the basal layers. Attempts have been made to establish a chronology for the site. These include four thermoluminescence (TL) dates for Layer 4, ranging from 23,100 ± 3300 to 29,400 ± 2300 BP, and three AMS radiocarbon dates from charcoal samples belonging to the lower part of the same layer, yielding ages of 38,650-36,750 cal BP, 44,200-42,350 cal BP, and 54,400-46,050 cal BP (all at the 95.4% confidence level). Kaldar Cave is the first well-stratified Late Palaeolithic locality to be excavated in the Zagros which is one of the earliest sites with cultural materials attributed to early AMHs in western Asia. It also offers an opportunity to study the technological differences between the Mousterian and the first Upper Palaeolithic lithic technologies as well as the human behaviour in the region. In this study, we present a detailed description of the newly excavated stratigraphy, quantified results from the lithic assemblages, preliminary faunal remains analyses, geochronologic data, taphonomic aspects, and an interpretation of the regional paleoenvironment.

Abstract

We compared HPV genotypes among squamous cervical cancer samples from a public hospital (n = 55) and a private clinic (n = 35 cases) of Santiago. Paraffin-embedded specimens were analyzed by PCR followed by an immunoenzimatic assay. Reverse line blotting was used for the identification of 36 HPV genotypes. We found HPVDNAm 94.4% of all cancers. Single mfections: HPV16: 40.0%, (clinic 37.1%, hospital 41.8%) VPH18:7.8% (clinic 2.9%, hospital 10.9%); single+multiple mfections: VPH16: 61.1% (clinic 53.1%, hospital 71.7%), VPH18: 34.4% (clinic 21.9%, hospital 45.2%). HPV16 orHPV18 occurredin 75.6% of cases, higher in the hospital than the clinic (87.3%-95% CI: 84.9-96.3 - and 57. l%-95% CI: 46.6-66 - respectively, p = 0.002). Other genotypes in single mfections: HPV 26, 31, 33, 45, 58, 67; in co-mfections: HPV 35,52,56,59 and 66. HPV16 but specially HPV 18 were significantly more frequent in the public hospital; 75.6% of squamous cervical cancer were associated to the vaccine preventable HPV16/18.

Abstract

Se comparan los genotipos de VPH en casos de cáncer cérvico-uterino escamocelular de una clínica privada (n: 35) y de un hospital público (n: 55) atendidos entre 1996 y 2006 en Santiago, Chile. Se analizaron por RPC y ensayo inmunoenzimático muestras tumorales en bloques de parafina, genotipificándose con reverse Une blotting para 36 genotipos de VPH. Se detectó VPH en 94,4% de los casos: infecciones únicas por: VPH 16: 40,0%>, (clínica 37,1%, hospital 41,8%) VPH 18: 7,8% (clínica 2,9%, hospital 10,9%); total de infecciones por VPH 16 61,1% (clínica 53,1%, hospital 71,7%), por VPH 18 34,4% (clínica 21,9%, hospital 45,2%). Co-infección: VPH 16/18 75,6% (clínica 57,1%; IC95% = 46,6-66,0 hospital 87,3%; IC95% = 84,9-96,3, p = 0,002). Se identificó otros 11 genotipos oncogénicos en infecciones únicas (VPH: 26, 31, 33, 45, 58, 67) o en co-infección con VPH 16/18 (VPH: 35, 52, 56, 59, 66). VPH 16 y VPH 18 fueron significativamente más frecuentes en el hospital público, particularmente VPH18; 75,6%> de los cánceres se asociaron a los genotipos VPH 16/18, tipos prevenibles por vacuna.
