Acne, of great prevalence and impact, presents many forms that can be treated by hygiene, topical medications, and manual alternative interventions such as skin cleansing and electrotherapy. The use of radiofrequency in the treatment of acne aims to increase the temperature in the cutaneous tissue, causing several metabolic and structural reactions, such as stimulating neocollagenesis. This study aimed to investigate the use of high-frequency current as an adjunctive treatment for acne. This is a non-systematic review of indexed databases (MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS). A total of 18 studies were included in this review and most of them related different treatment for acne associated with radiofrequency. Radiofrequency presents few complications and good results, besides having as an additional advantage the possibility of the patient returning to the routine immediately after application. RESUMEN Con gran prevalencia e impacto, el acné puede tener muchas formas, las cuales pueden ser tratadas por medio de medidas de higiene, medicamentos tópicos e intervenciones manuales alternativas, como la limpieza de la piel y el uso de electroterapia. La radiofrecuencia en el tratamiento de esta afección tiene como objetivo aumentar la temperatura en el tejido de la piel, provocando diversas reacciones metabólicas y estructurales, como la estimulación de la neocolagénesis. Este trabajo pretendió investigar el uso de corriente de alta frecuencia como coadyuvante en el tratamiento del acné. Esta es una revisión no sistemática en las bases de datos indexadas (MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS). En esta revisión se incluyeron 18 estudios, la mayoría de ellos abordaban diferentes recursos para el tratamiento del acné asociados al uso de la radiofrecuencia. Se encontró que la radiofrecuencia tiene pocas complicaciones y buenos resultados, además de la ventaja adicional de permitir al paciente volver a la rutina inmediatamente después de su aplicación. Trata-se de uma revisão não sistemática de bases de dados indexadas (MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS). Foram incluídos 18 estudos nesta revisão, a maioria deles relaciona diferentes recursos de tratamento para acne associados ao uso da radiofrequência. Verificou-se que a radiofrequência apresenta poucas complicações e bons resultados, além de ter como vantagem adicional a possibilidade de o paciente retornar à rotina imediatamente após a aplicação.

Objective: The present study intended to analyze the effects of a relaxation technique called autogenic training, on nonlinear heart rate variability, with the hypothesis that the relaxation in question is capable of promote greater synergism between the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system, thus avoiding high levels of stress and future complications. Swyer syndrome is one of the disorders of sexual differentiation. Previous studies have demonstrated increased sympathetic activity with heart rate variability (HRV) analysis with decreasing estradiol levels. One patient presented a pure 46, XY gonadal dysgenesis with female phenotype. Cardiac autonomic modulation was assessed through HRV analysis while at rest. This research analyzed linear and nonlinear indexes. HRV analysis showed reduced parasympathetic and global modulation with an apparent increase in sympathetic tone and a loss of HR fractal dynamics toward correlated behavior, characterized by low entropy and high determinism of time series.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Pain is frequent in wards and impairs patients’ treatment and recovery, especially orthopedic patients. So, this study aimed at evaluating pre and postoperative analgesic adequacy in patients submitted to orthopedic surgeries, and at looking for possible variables predicting the analgesic adequacy of such patients in both moments.METHODS:This is a quasi-experimental study with two groups, orthopedic pre and postoperative periods, carried out through structured interview, physical evaluation and medical record analysis, in the Surgical Clinic of the Teaching Hospital, School of Medicine, Itajuba/MG, developed with patients in the pre and postoperative periods of orthopedic surgery.RESULTS:Participated in the study 31 patients, all of them with medical prescription of some analgesic drug, being weak opioids those most frequently prescribed in 84% of preoperative cases, increasing to 87% in the postoperative period; 39% had no preoperative pain, decreasing to 36% in the postoperative period. On the other hand, 39% of patients had moderate to severe pain in the preoperative period, increasing to 45% in the postoperative period, being that 74% had analgesic adequacy in the preoperative period, increasing to 81% in the postoperative period.CONCLUSION:Most patients of this study had adequate analgesia in the pre and postoperative periods of orthopedic surgery. In our sample, selected variables have not adequately predicted analgesic adequacy in both moments of the orthopedic surgery. RESUMOJUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS:A dor é comum nas enfermarias e dificulta o tratamento e a recuperação dos pacientes, principalmente ortopédicos. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a adequação da analgesia em pacientes submetidos a cirurgias ortopédicas, no pré e pós-operatório, e verificar possíveis variáveis preditoras da adequação analgésica desses pacientes nos dois momentos.MÉTODOS:Trata-se de um estudo quase-experimental com dois grupos, pré e pós-operatório ortopédico, realizado através de entrevista estruturada, exame físico e análise de prontuário, na Clínica Cirúrgica do Hospital Escola da Faculdade de Medicina de Itajubá/MG, desenvolvido com pacientes no pré e pós-operatório de cirurgia ortopédica.RESULTADOS:Foram avaliados 31 pacientes, todos tinham prescrição médica de algum fármaco analgésico, sendo o opioide fraco o mais prescrito em 84% dos casos no pré-operatório passando para 87% no pós-operatório; 39% não apresentavam dor no pré-operatório, diminuindo para 36% no pós-operatório. Por outro lado, 39% dos pacientes apresentaram dor moderada a intensa no pré-operatório, aumentando para 45% no período pós-operatório, 74% apresentaram adequação analgésica no pré-operatório, aumentando para 81% no pós-operatório.CONCLUSÃO:A maior parte dos pacientes desta pesquisa tinha adequação analgésica no pré e pós-operatório de cirurgia ortopédica. Na amostra estudada, as variáveis selecionadas não apresentaram predição da adequação analgésica nos dois momentos da cirurgia ortopédica.

The location that is most affected are the heart valves. Herein, we report a case of an uncommon abscess, a sub-endothelial abscess between the transition of the superior vena cava and the right atrium. There were several emboli to the lung and foot, and the agent was related to Staphylococcus aureus and a double-lumen catheter. Usually, this type of abscess is located in valves, either the tricuspid valve if related to catheters or injection drug use or the mitral valve if related to other causes. An exhaustive review was made, but we found no information about the location of this abscess and the rarity of the event motivating the report of infection. In this study, we conducted a literature review in order to investigate the heart rate variability (HRV) in COPD subjects. Methods: A search was performed in Medline database, using the link between the keywords: “autonomic nervous system”, “cardiovascular system”, “COPD” and “heart rate variability”. Results: The search resulted in a total of 40 references. Amongst these references, the first exclusion resulted in the barring of 29 titles and abstracts, which were not clearly related to the purpose of review. This resulted in a total of 11 articles that were then read and utilized in the review. The selected studies indicated that there is significant reduction of HRV in patients with COPD, characterized by reduction of indices that assess parasympathetic activity in addition to dealing with the global autonomic modulation. We also established that supervised exercise can reduce these harmful effects in COPD patients. Also, it was reported that the use of non-invasive ventilation in these patients may contribute to the improvement of respiratory symptoms, with no impairing, and may even induce positive responses in cardiac autonomic regulation. Conclusion: The studies indicate a need for further investigations to guide future therapies to improve the treatment of cardiovascular system in the respiratory diseases. We evaluated heart rate variability (HRV) during endodontic treatment. Method: 50 male and female patients aged between 18 and 40 years old and diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis or pulp necrosis of the lower molars with indication of gender endodontic treatment were analyzed. HRV was analyzed in the time (SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50) and frequency (LF, HF and LF/HF ratio) domains recorded in the first session of root canal treatment. The indices were analyzed in the following periods: T1) ten minutes before the endodontic treatment, T2) ten minutes after the administration of anesthesia before endodontic treatment, T3) during the entire period of endodontic treatment and T4) thirty minutes after the end of the endodontic treatment. Results: The SDNN, RMSSD and pNN50 indices increased at T2 compared to T1, the pNN50 and RMSSD indices increased at T3 and T4 compared to T2. The LF in normalized units increased at T4 compared to T2 and in absolute units it was increased at T4 compared to T1. The HF in normalized units was reduced at T4 compared to T2 and in absolute units was reduced at T1, T3 and T4 compared to T2. The LF/HF ratio was higher at T4 compared to T2. Conclusion: The global modulation of heart increases after local anesthesia and vagal tone reduce during surgery procedures and after the surgical procedures.
