Abstract

We present a pioneering, spatially resolved, multiphase gas abundance study on the blue compact dwarf galaxy NGC 5253, targeting 10 star-forming (SF) clusters inside six far-UV (FUV) Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) pointings with cospatial optical Very Large Telescope/MUSE observations throughout the galaxy. The SF regions span a wide range of ages (1–15 Myr) and are distributed at different radii (50–230 pc). We performed a robust absorption-line profile fitting on the COS spectra, covering 1065–1430 Å in the FUV, allowing an accurate computation of neutral-gas abundances for 13 different ions sampling eight elements. These values were then compared with the ionized-gas abundances, measured using the direct method on MUSE integrated spectra inside analog COS apertures. Our multiphase, spatially resolved comparisons find abundances, which are lower in the neutral gas than the ionized gas by 0.22, 0.80, and 0.58 dex for log(O/H), log(N/H), and log(N/O), respectively. We modeled the chemical abundance distributions and evaluated correlations as a function of the radius and age. It was found that, while N, O, and N/O abundances decrease as a function of age in the ionized gas, they increase with age in the neutral gas. No strong correlations for N, O, or N/O were observed as a function of the radius. The N/O and N/H offsets between the phases were found to decrease with age, providing evidence that chemical enrichment happens differentially, first in the ionized-gas phase around 2–5 Myrs (due to N-rich Wolf–Rayet stars) and then mixing out into the cold neutral gas on longer timescales of 10–15 Myr.

Abstract

Using the exquisite data from the MUSE eXtremely Deep Field (MXDF), we report the discovery of an Mg ̄II emission nebula with an area above a 2I significance level of 1000 proper kpc2. This provides the first panoramic view of the spatial distribution of magnesium in the intragroup medium of a low-mass group of five star-forming galaxies at za" =a" 1.31. The galaxy group members are separated by less than 50 physical kpc in projection and ~120 km sa1 in velocity space. The most massive galaxy has a stellar mass of 109.35a Ma and shows an Mg ̄II P-Cygni line profile, indicating the presence of an outflow, which is consistent with the spatially resolved spectral analysis showing ~+120 km sa1 shift of the Mg ̄II emission lines with respect to the systemic redshift. The other galaxies are less massive and only show Mg ̄II in emission. The detected Mg ̄II nebula has a maximal projected extent of ~70 kpc, including a low-surface-brightness (~2 A- 10a19 erg sa1 cma2 arcseca2) gaseous bridge between two subgroups of galaxies. The presence of absorption features in the spectrum of a background galaxy located at an impact parameter of 19 kpc from the closest galaxy of the group indicates the presence of gas enriched in magnesium even beyond the detected nebula seen in emission, which suggests that we are observing the tip of a larger intragroup medium. The observed Mg ̄II velocity gradient suggests an overall rotation of the structure along the major axis of the most massive galaxy. Our MUSE data also reveal extended Fe ̄II∗ emission in the vicinity of the most massive galaxy, aligned with its minor axis and pointing towards a neighboring galaxy. Extended [O ̄II] emission is found around the galaxy group members and at the location of the Mg ̄II bridge. Our results suggest that both tidal stripping effects from galaxy interactions and outflows are enriching the intragroup medium of this system.

Abstract

Galaxies in dense environments are subject to interactions and mechanisms which directly affect their evolution by lowering their gas fractions and reducing their star-forming capacity earlier than their isolated counterparts. The aim of our project is to get new insights about the role of environment on the stellar and baryonic content of galaxies using a kinematic approach, through the study of the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR). Abstract

Galaxies form and evolve in different environments, shaped by the distribution of dark matter halos. The evolution of galaxies in low-density environments significantly differs from those in dense structures, where environmental drivers reduce the gas content quenching their star formation capacity earlier than their isolated counterparts. The goal of this work is to study the TFR for galaxies at intermediate z groups. This relation provides key information on the dynamical support, and on formation and evolutionary state of galaxies. The advent of powerful IFS instruments like MUSE, allows to perform spatially resolved studies at intermediate redshifts (z). This research is based on the exploitation of an unique sample of 12 dense galaxy groups selected in the COSMOS field, from the GTO MUSE gAlaxy Groups In Cosmos (MAGIC) Survey, at 0.3 < z < 0.8. The kinematics was extracted using the [OII] λλ3726,3729 Å doublet. A bulge-disk decomposition and a 2D kinematic modeling were applied to recover the maximum rotation velocity at 2.2 disk scale lengths (R_2.2), the intrinsic velocity dispersion (σ) and the dynamical mass. I performed a rigorous sample selection in setting limits on the spatial resolution and on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). I compared my results with previous studies in different environments finding our method reduces the outliers in the TFR. I found the stellar and baryonic mass fractions increase with stellar mass. I also found a clear offset of the TFR zero-point between different environments implying that at fixed stellar mass, galaxies in dense environments rotate faster than in low-density environments. The evolution of the TFR in dense environments could be due to a combination of quenching of star formation and contraction of the baryonic content., Las galaxias se forman y evolucionan en entornos diferentes, moldeados por la distribución de los halos de materia oscura. La evolución de las galaxias en entornos de baja densidad difiere significativamente de las que se encuentran en estructuras densas, donde los factores ambientales reducen el contenido de gas disminuyendo su capacidad de formación estelar antes que sus homólogas aisladas. El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar la Relación Tully Fisher (RTF) para galaxias en grupos a corrimientos al rojo (z) intermedios. Esta relación proporciona información clave sobre el soporte dinámico y el estado de formación y evolución de las galaxias. La llegada de potentes espectrógrafos de campo integral (IFS) como MUSE, permite realizar estudios espacialmente resueltos a z intermedios. Esta investigación se basa en la explotación de una muestra única de 12 grupos densos de galaxias densas seleccionadas en el campo COSMOS, procedentes del GTO MUSE gAlaxy Groups In Cosmos (MAGIC) Survey, a 0.3 < z < 0.8. La cinemática se extrajo utilizando el doblete [OII] λλ3726,3729 Å. Se aplicó una descomposición bulbo-disco y un modelado cinemático 2D para recuperar la velocidad máxima de rotación a 2,2 radios de escala del disco (R_2,2), la dispersión de velocidad intrínseca (σ) y la masa dinámica. Llevé a cabo una rigurosa selección de la muestra al establecer los límites para la resolución espacial y la relación señal a ruido (SNR). Comparé mis resultados con estudios anteriores en diferentes entornos encontrando que nuestro método reduce los valores atípicos en la RTF. Encontré que las fracciones de masa estelar y bariónica aumentan con la masa estelar. También se observa un claro desplazamiento del punto cero de la RTF en diferentes ambientes, lo que implica que a una masa estelar fija, las galaxias en entornos densos giran más rápido que en entornos de baja densidad. La evolución de la RTF en entornos densos podría deberse a una combinación de apagado de la formación estelar y contracción del contenido bariónico., Les galaxies se forment et évoluent dans différents environnements, façonnées par la distribution des halos de matière noire. L'évolution des galaxies dans les environnements à faible densité (EFD) diffère considérablement de celles des structures denses (SD), où les facteurs environnementaux réduisent la teneur en gaz en éteignant leur capacité de formation stellaire plus tôt que leurs homologues isolées. Le but de ce travail est d'étudier la Relation Tully Fisher (RTF) des galaxies en groupes à décalages spectraux vers le rouge (z) intermédiaires. Cette relation fournit des informations clés sur le support dynamique, ainsi que sur la formation et l'état évolutif des galaxies. L'avènement des spectrographes à champ intégral (IFS) comme MUSE, permet d'effectuer des études spatialement résolues à z intermédiaires. Cette recherche est basée sur l'exploitation d'un échantillon unique de 12 groupes de galaxies sélectionnés du sondage GTO MUSE gAlaxy Groups In Cosmos (MAGIC), à 0,3 < z < 0,8. La cinématique a été extraite à l'aide du doublet [OII] λλ3726,3729 Å . J'ai trouvé que les fractions de masse stellaire et baryonique augmentent avec la masse stellaire, et un décalage du point zéro (z_0) de la RTF entre différents environnements qui implique que les galaxies dans des structures denses tournent plus vite que dans des environnements à faible densité. L'évolution du RTF en milieu dense pourrait être due à une combinaison d'extinction de la formation stellaire et la contraction du contenu baryonique.

Abstract

MUSE observations of the cluster of galaxies CGr32 ($M_{200}$ $\simeq$ 2 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$) at $z$ = 0.73 reveal the presence of two massive star forming galaxies with extended tails of diffuse gas detected in the [OII]$\lambda\lambda$3727-3729 A emission-line doublet. The tails, which have a cometary shape with a typical surface brightness of a few 10$^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$, extend up to $\simeq$ 100 kpc (projected distance) from the galaxy discs and are not associated to any stellar component. All this observational evidence suggests that the gas has been removed during a ram-pressure stripping event. This observation is thus the first evidence that dynamical interactions with the intracluster medium were active when the Universe had only half of its present age. The density of the gas derived using the observed [OII]$\lambda$3729/[OII]$\lambda$3726 line ratio implies a very short recombination time, suggesting that a source of ionisation is necessary to keep the gas ionised within the tail., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted in A&A
