3. Putting the 'economy' back in the circular economy.

Abstract

This paper offers a business‐focused critique centring on the superordinate goal of circular economy (CE) strategy and advances an ideograph that can help economic planners and corporate leaders conceptualize CE strategies that meet the bifurcate goals of strengthening economic resilience while also attenuating resource footprints. The paper, based on critical discourse analysis (CDA) and supported by an extensive literature review, highlights the pervasive manner in which the CE is mischaracterized as a materials circulation (MC) strategy and demonstrates how an oft‐referenced ideograph—the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) Butterfly—graphically entrenches this characterization. The first contribution that this study makes centres on providing clarity on how CE principles can be integrated with corporate strategy to elevate competitive advantage through resource economic optimization (REO). The second contribution is the development of a reconceptualized ideograph—The Integrated Circular Economy (ICE) model—that better conveys how this strategic perspective on CE and be conflicted with economic networks to deliver better economic and environmental performance. Abstract

This article reviews the evolution of "energy security" as a concept guiding strategic energy planning and demonstrates how fossil fuel technologies which once enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with energy security no longer contribute to the goals of enhanced energy security. Conversely, alternative energy is shown to fulfill many of the objectives that modern energy security enhancement initiatives aim to achieve. The article concludes that the existing fragmented structure of the alternative energy technology sector places the sector at a financial disadvantage when trying to break the technological lock that fossil fuel technologies have on energy provision and argues for a unified effort aimed at fostering improved public understanding of alternative technology capabilities and mustering political support for a transition away from fossil fuel technologies. Failure to unify may lead to fossil fuel combustion and carbon capture and sequestration becoming entrenched as the preferred near-term approach to CO2 abatement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article presents a critical evaluation of the UNFCCC process and other key climate change mitigation initiatives and concludes that both the UNFCCC and other polycentric approaches to climate change mitigation are of continued value in supporting global GHG emissions reductions but the notable lack of concrete commitment to performance on behalf of China and the United States renders these efforts impotent in terms of abating the worst consequences attributed to climate change. The article puts forward the notion that a bilateral agreement between the US and China represents a desirable supplemental initiative in the battle to expedite GHG emission reduction. After examining the perspectives on climate change mitigation that dominate the respective nations, the paper outlines areas of prospective collaboration, introduces some of the elements that are critical to collaborative success and considers some of the prevalent threats to such a collaborative initiative. Abstract

Since the 1990s, there has been a proliferation of research exploring the benefits of proactive corporate environmental management initiatives. Unfortunately, the absence of a comprehensive, strategic planning framework relegates much of this valuable research to a study of good ideas for making money while operating more sustainably. This paper presents a framework for guiding corporate environmental strategy to bring order to existing observations and allow social scientists to begin the process of ‘orderly control and prediction’. The research is based on modified grounded theory and an extensive literature review pertaining to the benefits of corporate environmental management. The framework has been named the ‘Green Onion’ to highlight the multiple strategic layers of influence uncovered and the importance of retaining resilient outer layers (i.e., stakeholder management) to protect the highly potent core of functional environmental management initiatives (i.e., cost saving initiatives).
