It is conceivable that a few thousand confirmed exoplanets initially harboured satellites similar to the moons of the Solar system or larger. Could some of them have survived over the aeons of dynamical evolution to the present day? The dynamical conditions are harsh for exomoons in such systems because of the greater influence of the host star and of the tidal torque it exerts on the planet. We investigate the stability niches of exomoons around hundreds innermost exoplanets for which the needed parameters are known today, and determine the conditions of these moons' long-term survival. General lower and upper bounds on the exomoon survival niches are derived for orbital separations, periods, and masses. The fate of an exomoon residing in a stability niche depends on the initial relative rate of the planet's rotation and on the ability of the moon to synchronise the planet by overpowering the tidal action from the star. State of the art models of tidal dissipation and secular orbital evolution are applied to a large sample of known exoplanet systems with their estimated physical parameters. We show that in some plausible scenarios, exomoons can prevent close exoplanets from spiraling into their host stars, thus extending these planets' lifetimes. This is achieved when exomoons synchronise the rotation of their parent planets, overpowering the tidal action from the stars. Massive moons are more likely to survive and to maintain a high rotation rate of their host planets (higher than these planets' mean motion)., Astronomy & Astrophysics

Mass ratios of widely separated, long-period, resolved binary stars can be directly estimated from the available data in major space astrometry catalogs, such as the ESA's Hipparcos and Gaia mission results. The method is based on the universal principle of inertial motion of the system's center of mass in the absence of external forces, and is independent of any assumptions about the physical parameters or stellar models. The application is limited by the precision of input astrometric data, the orbital period and distance to the system, and possible presence of other attractors in the vicinity, such as in triple systems. A generalization of this technique to triples is proposed, as well as approaches to estimation of uncertainties. The known long-period binary HIP 473 AB is discussed as an application example, for which a $m_2/m_1=0.996^{+0.026}_{-0.026}$ is obtained., Comment: accepted in a slightly reduced version in RevMexAA

Hobbs, David, et al., The era of all-sky space astrometry began with the Hipparcos mission in 1989 and provided the first very accurate catalogue of apparent magnitudes, positions, parallaxes and proper motions of 120 000 bright stars at the milliarcsec (or milliarcsec per year) accuracy level. Hipparcos has now been superseded by the results of the Gaia mission. The second Gaia data release contained astrometric data for almost 1.7 billion sources with tens of microarcsec (or microarcsec per year) accuracy in a vast volume of the Milky Way and future data releases will further improve on this. Gaia has just completed its nominal 5-year mission (July 2019), but is expected to continue in operations for an extended period of an additional 5 years through to mid 2024. Its final catalogue to be released ∼ 2027, will provide astrometry for ∼ 2 billion sources, with astrometric precisions reaching 10 microarcsec. Why is accurate astrometry so important? The answer is that it provides fundamental data which underpin much of modern observational astronomy as will be detailed in this White Paper. All-sky visible and Near-InfraRed (NIR) astrometry with a wavelength cutoff in the K-band is not just focused on a single or small number of key science cases. Instead, it is extremely broad, answering key science questions in nearly every branch of astronomy while also providing a dense and accurate visible-NIR reference frame needed for future astronomy facilities., Open access funding provided by Lund University.

White dwarfs containing orbiting planetesimals or their debris represent crucial benchmarks by which theoretical investigations of post-main-sequence planetary systems may be calibrated. The photometric transit signatures of likely planetary debris in the ZTF J0139+5245 white dwarf system has an orbital period of about 110 days. An asteroid which breaks up to produce this debris may spin itself to destruction through repeated close encounters with the star without entering its Roche radius and without influence from the white dwarf's luminosity. Here, we place coupled constraints on the orbital pericentre ($q$) and the ratio ($\beta$) of the middle to longest semiaxes of a triaxial asteroid which disrupts outside of this white dwarf's Roche radius ($r_{\rm Roche}$) soon after attaining its 110-day orbit. We find that disruption within tens of years is likely when $\beta \lesssim 0.6$ and $q\approx 1.0-2.0r_{\rm Roche}$, and when $\beta \lesssim 0.2$ out to $q\approx 2.5r_{\rm Roche}$. Analysing the longer-timescale disruption of triaxial asteroids around ZTF J0139+5245 is desirable but may require either an analytical approach relying on ergodic theory or novel numerical techniques., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Few solar system asteroids and comets are found in high-eccentricity orbits (e > 0.9), but in the primordial planetesimal disks and in exoplanet systems around dying stars such objects are believed to be common. For 2006 HY51, the main belt asteroid with the highest known eccentricity 0.9684, we investigate the probable rotational states today using our computer-efficient chaotic process simulation method. Starting with random initial conditions, we find that this asteroid is inevitably captured into stable spin–orbit resonances typically within tens to a hundred megayears. The resonances are confirmed by direct integration of the equation of motion in the vicinity of endpoints. Most resonances are located at high spin values above 960 times the mean motion (such as 964:1 or 4169:4), corresponding to rotation periods of a few days. We discover three types of resonance in the high-eccentricity regime: (1) regular circulation with weakly librating aphelion velocities and integer-number spin–orbit commensurabilities, (2) switching resonances of higher order with orientation alternating between aligned (0 or π) and sidewise (π/2) angles at aphelia and perihelia, (3) jumping resonances with aphelion spin alternating between two quantum states in the absence of spin–orbit commensurability. The islands of equilibrium are numerous at high spin rates but small in parameter space area, so that it takes millions of orbits of chaotic wandering to accidentally entrap in one of them. We discuss the implications of this discovery for the origins and destiny of high-eccentricity objects and the prospects of extending this analysis to the full 3D treatment.

USNO Bright Star Catalog (UBSC) is a new astrometric catalog of 1423 brightest stars covering the entire sky, which is published online. It is nearly complete to $V=3$ mag except for three stellar systems. A combined astrometric solution of the Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometry Data and two dedicated ground-based campaigns in 2013 -- 2020 is the basis for this catalog. The astrometric parameters for each star include position coordinates, parallax, proper motion components, and their covariances on the Hipparcos mean epoch 1991.25. 64 percent of the catalog are flagged as known or suspected double or binary stars. UBSC lists 68 stars missing in Gaia EDR3 and another 114 stars without Gaia parallaxes or proper motions. The Hipparcos catalog and its Double and Multiple System Annex (DMSA) lists 4099 components with individual proper motions and coordinates on the epoch 1991.25. Many of these long-period binary stars are also present in the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2). Using the available relative positions and proper motions separated by 25.25 years, the equations of relative orbital motion can be solved for the two epoch eccentric anomalies, orbital period, and eccentricity. The method employs elimination of the linear Thiele-Innes unknowns and nonlinear optimization of the remaining condition equations. The quality of these solutions is compromised by the insufficient condition and modest precision of the Hipparcos astrometric data, as revealed by Monte-Carlo simulations with artificially perturbed data points. The presence of multiple systems and optical pairs can also perturb the results. Limited experiments with artificial data indicate that useful estimates can be obtained with a 25-year epoch difference for wide binaries with orbital periods up to $\sim 500$ years. The prospects of this method dramatically improve with the proposed next-generation space astrometry missions such as Gaia-NIR and Theia, especially when additional conditions are included from astrometric or spectroscopic measurements. Asteroids and other small celestial bodies have markedly prolate shapes, and the perturbative triaxial torques which are applied during pericenter passages in highly eccentric orbits trigger and sustain a state of chaotic rotation. Because the prograde spin rate around the principal axis of inertia is not bounded from above, it can accidentally reach the threshold value corresponding to rotational break-up. Previous investigations of this process were limited to integrations of $\sim 10^3$ orbits because of the stiff equation of motion. We present here a fast 1D simulation method to compute the evolution of this spin rate over $\sim 10^9$ orbits. We apply the method to the most eccentric solar system asteroid known, 2006 HY51 (with $e = 0.9684$), and find that for any reasonably expected shape parameters, it can never be accelerated to break-up speed. However, primordial solar system asteroids on more eccentric orbits may have already broken up from this type of rotational fission. The method also represents a promising opportunity to investigate the long-term evolution of extremely eccentric triaxial exo-asteroids ($e > 0.99$), which are thought to be common in white dwarf planetary systems, Accepted in ApJ. Using the absolute astrometric positions and proper motions for common stars in the Hipparcos and Gaia catalogs separated by 24.75 years in the mean epoch, we compute mass ratios for long-period, resolved binary systems without any astrophysical assumptions or dependencies except the presence of inner binary subsystems that may perturb the observed mean proper motions. The mean epoch positions of binary companions from the Hipparcos Double and Multiple System Annex (DMSA) are used as the first epoch. The mean positions and proper motions of carefully cross-matched counterparts in Gaia EDR3 comprise the second epoch data. Selecting only results with sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio and discarding numerous optical pairs, we construct a catalog of 248 binary systems, which is published online. Observational evidence of white dwarf planetary systems is dominated by the remains of exo-asteroids through accreted metals, debris discs, and orbiting planetesimals. However, exo-planets in these systems play crucial roles as perturbing agents, and can themselves be perturbed close to the white dwarf Roche radius. Here, we illustrate a procedure for computing the tidal interaction between a white dwarf and a near-spherical solid planet. This method determines the planet's inward and/or outward drift, and whether the planet will reach the Roche radius and be destroyed. We avoid constant tidal lag formulations and instead employ the self-consistent secular Darwin-Kaula expansions from Bou�� & Efroimsky (2019), which feature an arbitrary frequency dependence on the quality functions. We adopt wide ranges of dynamic viscosities and spin rates for the planet in order to straddle many possible outcomes, and provide a foundation for the future study of individual systems with known or assumed rheologies. We find that: (i) massive Super-Earths are destroyed more readily than minor planets (such as the ones orbiting WD 1145+017 and SDSS J1228+1040), (ii) low-viscosity planets are destroyed more easily than high-viscosity planets, and (iii) the boundary between survival and destruction is likely to be fractal and chaotic., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The USNO ground-based astrometric program URAT-Bright in combination with the Hipparcos mission epoch astrometry provides precise proper motions of a thousand bright stars in the southern hemisphere on a time basis of about 25 yr. Small but statistically significant differences between these proper motions and Gaia EDR3 data can reveal long-period exoplanets similar to Jupiter in the nearest star systems. The presence of such a planet orbiting the magnetically active dwarf ε Eri is confirmed from both URAT-Hipparcos-EDR3 data and Hipparcos-EDR3 data with a corresponding projected velocity of (+5, +8) and (+6, +13) m s−1, respectively. These signals are formally significant at a 0.989 and 1.0 confidence. We conclude that the newest astrometric results confirm the existence of a long-period exoplanet orbiting ε Eri, which was marginally detected from precision radial velocity measurements some 20 yr ago.

We make use of individual (epoch) detection data from the Pan-STARRS 3Pi survey for 2863 optical ICRF3 counterparts in the five wavelength bands g, r, i, z, and y, published as part of the Data Release 2. A dedicated method based on the Functional Principal Component Analysis is developed for these sparse and irregularly sampled data. With certain regularization and normalization constraints, it allows us to obtain uniform and compatible estimates of the variability amplitudes and average magnitudes between the passbands and objects. We find that the starting assumption of affinity of the light curves for a given object at different wavelengths is violated for several percent of the sample. The distributions of root-mean-square variability amplitudes are strongly skewed toward small values, peaking at ~0.1 mag with tails stretching to 2 mag. Statistically, the lowest variability is found for the r band and the largest for the reddest y band. A small "brighter-redder" effect is present, with amplitudes in y greater than amplitudes in g in 57% of the sample. The variability versus redshift dependence shows a strong decline with z toward redshift 3, which we interpret as the time dilation of the dominant time frequencies. The colors of radio-loud ICRF3 quasars are correlated with redshift in a complicated, wavy pattern governed by the emergence of brightest emission lines within the five passbands., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted in AJ

The Gaia optical reference frame is intrinsically undefined with respect to global orientation and spin, so it needs to be anchored in the radio-based International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) to provide a referenced and quasi-inertial celestial coordinate system. The link between the two fundamental frames is realized through two samples of distant extragalactic sources, mostly AGNs and quasars, but only the smaller sample of radio-loud ICRF sources with optical counterparts is available to determine the mutual orientation. The robustness of this link can be mathematically formulated in the framework of functional principal component analysis using a set of vector spherical harmonics to represent the differences in celestial positions of the common objects. The weakest eigenvectors are computed, which describe the greatest deficiency of the link. The deficient or poorly determined terms are specific vector fields on the sphere which carry the largest errors of absolute astrometry using Gaia in reference to the ICRF. This analysis provides guidelines to the future development of the ICRF maximizing the accuracy of the link over the entire celestial sphere. A measure of robustness of a least-squares solution, which can be applied to any linear model fitting problem, is introduced to help discriminate between reference frame tie models of different degrees., Accepted in AJ

We use a combination of Hipparcos space mission data with the USNO dedicated ground-based astrometric program URAT-Bright designed to complement and verify Gaia results for the brightest stars in the south to estimate the small perturbations of observed proper motions caused by exoplanets. One of the 1423 bright stars in the program, δ Pav, stands out with a small proper motion difference between our long-term estimate and Gaia EDR3 value, which corresponds to a projected velocity of (−17, +13) m s−1. This difference is significant at a 0.994 confidence in the R.A. component, owing to the proximity of the star and the impressive precision of proper motions. The effect is confirmed by a comparison of long-term EDR3-Hipparcos and short-term Gaia EDR3 proper motions at a smaller velocity, but with formally absolute confidence. We surmise that the close Solar analog δ Pav harbors a long-period exoplanet similar to Jupiter.

Observed planetary debris in white dwarf atmospheres predominately originate from the destruction of small bodies on highly eccentric ($>0.99$) orbits. Despite their importance, these minor planets have coupled physical and orbital evolution which has remained largely unexplored. Here, we present a novel approach for estimating the influence of fast chaotic rotation on the orbital evolution of high-eccentricity triaxial asteroids, and formally characterize the propagation of their angular rotation velocities and orbital elements as random time processes. By employing the impulse approximation, we demonstrate that the violent gravitational interactions during periastron passages transfer energy between the orbit and asteroid's rotation. If the distribution of spin impulses were symmetric around zero, then the net result would be a secular decrease of the semimajor axis and a further increase of the eccentricity. We find evidence, however, that the chaotic rotation may be self-regulated in such a manner that these effects are reduced or nullified. We discover that asteroids on highly eccentric orbits can break themselves apart --- in a type of YORP-less rotational fission --- without actually entering the Roche radius, with potentially significant consequences for the distribution of debris and energy requirements for gravitational scattering in metal-polluted white dwarf planetary systems. Motivated by the existence of binary systems where a stellar-mass black hole is bound to a normal star, we selected four red giants with large radial velocity (RV) variation from the survey of SIM grid stars and monitored their RVs for several months. None turned out to contain a massive companion above 2.5 solar masses. The red giant TYC 9299-1080-1 with a large RV and a large proper motion is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 81 days. It is an extreme halo object moving at 350 km s$^{-1}$ almost directly toward the Galactic center. HD 206092 is a double-lined binary with a short period of 4.37 days. It belongs to the rare class of active RS CVn-type binaries with evolved primary components, apparently undergoing mass transfer. The X-ray luminosity of HD 206092 is about twice as high as the most luminous coronal X-ray emitters observed by ROSAT, including II Peg and the prototype star RS CVn. HD~318347 has a variable double-peaked emission-line spectrum (not a giant), while HD~324668 has a constant RV. Despite the overall good quality of the SIM survey data confirmed by a comparison with Gaia DR2 mean radial velocities, the few large RV variations are explained, mostly, by erroneous data. International audience; Commission 8 has regularly published triennial reports in the past and the current OC therefore voted to adopt a traditional format also for this special Legacy issue of the IAU Transactions. The outgoing President is grateful for the support of many Commission members who contributed to this report. Our contribution consists of 3 parts: 1) this introduction, providing a general overview and highlights of recent research in astrometry, 2) a summary of the astrometry business & science meeting at the 2015 IAU General Assembly, and 3) the activity report of our Commisson covering the mid-2012 to mid-2015 period.

The VLBI USNO 2016A (U16A) solution is part of a work-in-progress effort by USNO towards the preparation of the ICRF3. Most of the astrometric improvement with respect to the ICRF2 is due to the re-observation of the VCS sources. Our objective in this paper is to assess U16A's astrometry. A comparison with ICRF2 shows statistically significant offsets of size 0.1 mas between the two solutions. While Gaia DR1 positions are not precise enough to resolve these offsets, they are found to be significantly closer to U16A than ICRF2. In particular, the trend for typically larger errors for Southern sources in VLBI solutions are decreased in U16A. Overall, the VLBI-Gaia offsets are reduced by 21%. The U16A list includes 718 sources not previously included in ICRF2. Twenty of those new sources have statistically significant radio-optical offsets. We investigate a sample of 3412 {\it International Celestial Reference Frame} (ICRF3) extragalactic radio-loud sources with accurate positions determined by VLBI in the S/X band, mostly active galactic nuclei (AGN) and quasars, which are cross-matched with optical sources in the second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2). The main goal of this study is to determine a core sample of astrometric objects that define the mutual orientation of the two fundamental reference frames, the Gaia (optical) and the ICRF3 (radio) frames. The distribution of normalized offsets between the VLBI sources and their optical counterparts is non-Rayleigh, with a deficit around the modal value and a tail extending beyond the 3-sigma confidence level. A few filters are applied to the sample in order to discard double cross-matches, confusion sources, and Gaia astrometric solutions of doubtful quality. {\it Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System} (Pan-STARRS) and {\it Dark Energy Survey} (DES) stacked multi-color images are used to further deselect objects that are less suitable for precision astrometry, such as extended galaxies, double and multiple sources, and obvious misidentifications. After this cleaning, 2642 quasars remain, of which 20\% still have normalized offset magnitudes exceeding 3, or 99\% confidence level. We publish a list of 2118 radio-loud quasars of prime astrometric quality. The observed dependence of binned median offset on redshift shows the expected decline at small redshifts, but also an unexpected rise at $z\sim 1.6$, which may be attributed to the emergence of the C IV emission line in the Gaia's $G$ band. While it is accepted that the eccentricity of Mercury (0.206) favours entrapment into the 3:2 spin-orbit resonance, open is the question how and when the capture took place. A recent work by Makarov (2012) has demonstrated that trapping into this resonance is certain if the eccentricity is larger than 0.2, provided that we use a realistic tidal model, the one which is based on the Darwin-Kaula expansion of the tidal torque. The physics-based tidal model changes dramatically the statistics of the possible final spin states. First, we discover that after only one encounter with the spin-orbit 3:2 resonance this resonance becomes the most probable end-state. Second, if a capture into this (or any other) resonance takes place, the capture becomes final, several crossings of the same state being forbidden by our model. Third, within our model the trapping of Mercury happens much faster than previously believed: for most histories, 10 - 20 Myr are sufficient. Fourth, even a weak laminar friction between the solid mantle and a molten core would most likely result in a capture in the 2:1 or even higher resonance. So the principal novelty of our paper is that the 3:2 end-state is more ancient than the same end-state obtained when the constant time lag model is employed. The swift capture justifies our treatment of Mercury as a homogeneous, unstratified body whose liquid core had not yet formed by the time of trapping. We also provide a critical analysis of the hypothesis by Wieczorek et al. (2012) that the early Mercury might had been retrograde, whereafter it synchronised its spin and then accelerated it to the 3:2 resonance. Accurate processing of the available data on cratering does not support that hypothesis, while the employment of a realistic rheology invalidates a key element of the hypothesis, an intermediate pseudosynchronous state needed to spin-up to the 3:2 resonance., Comment: Extended version of the submitted paper, accepted for publication in Icarus

A significant number of double stars with separations up to 2.5 arcsec are present in the Gaia Data Release 1 astrometric catalogs. Limiting our analysis to a well-studied sample of 1124 doubles resolved by Hipparcos, provided with individual Tycho component photometry, and cross-matched with the TGAS catalog, we estimate a rate of at least 3% for brighter double stars in Gaia DR1, which should be resolved in the future data releases. Gaia astrometric results are affected by unresolved duplicity. The variance-normalized quadratic differences of proper motion between Gaia and Hipparcos do not follow the expected chi^2 distribution and show signs of powerful degradation in the components aligned with the axes of the double systems. This concerns only pairs with separation below 1.2 -- 1.5 arcsec, which mostly remain unresolved in Gaia DR1. On the other hand, the orthogonal proper motion components and parallaxes do not have any detectable perturbation, as well as all astrometry for separations above 1.5 arcsec. Gaia parallaxes do not seem to be perturbed by duplicity, with Gaia - Hipparcos differences being systematically smaller than the expectation. The third US Naval Observatory (USNO) CCD Astrograph Catalog, UCAC3 was released at the IAU General Assembly on 2009 August 10. It is the first all-sky release in this series and contains just over 100 million objects, about 95 million of them with proper motions, covering about R = 8 to 16 magnitudes. Current epoch positions are obtained from the observations with the 20 cm aperture USNO Astrograph's "red lens", equipped with a 4k by 4k CCD. Proper motions are derived by combining these observations with over 140 ground- and space-based catalogs, including Hipparcos/Tycho and the AC2000.2, as well as unpublished measures of over 5000 plates from other astrographs. For most of the faint stars in the Southern Hemisphere the Yale/San Juan first epoch plates from the SPM program (YSJ1) form the basis for proper motions. These data are supplemented by all-sky Schmidt plate survey astrometry and photometry obtained from the SuperCOSMOS project, as well as 2MASS near-IR photometry. Major differences of UCAC3 data as compared to UCAC2 include a completely new raw data reduction with improved control over systematic errors in positions, significantly improved photometry, slightly deeper limiting magnitude, coverage of the north pole region, greater completeness by inclusion of double stars and weak detections. This of course leads to a catalog which is not as "clean" as UCAC2 and problem areas are outlined for the user in this paper. The positional accuracy of stars in UCAC3 is about 15 to 100 mas per coordinate, depending on magnitude, while the errors in proper motions range from 1 to 10 mas/yr depending on magnitude and observing history, with a significant improvement over UCAC2 achieved due to the re-reduced SPM data and inclusion of more astrograph plate data unavailable at the time of UCAC2., accepted by AJ, 24 pages, 34 figures, 3 tables

We ask if Earth-like planets (terrestrial mass and habitable-zone orbit) can be detected in multi-planet systems, using astrometric and radial velocity observations. We report here the preliminary results of double-blind calculations designed to answer this question.

The SIM Lite Observatory is expected to provide a global astrometric reference frame surpassing the 1-μas accuracy threshold in some spherical harmonics. A range of time-varying physical distortions of the reference frame will become observable as large-scale perturbations of the proper motion field. I consider the main sources of the apparent and physical motion of reference objects, such as the aberration of light caused by the acceleration of SIM, long gravitational waves and hypothetical rotation of the Universe, and present some estimates of the astrometric sensitivity to these effects. I argue that a global solution and covariance analysis is of crucial importance for the SIM mission to differentiate the inevitable accidental and systematic zonal errors from real physical phenomena.

Precision astrometry at microarcsecond accuracy has application to a wide range of astrophysical problems. This paper is a study of the science questions that can be addressed using an instrument that delivers parallaxes at about 4 microarcsec on targets as faint as V = 20, differential accuracy of 0.6 microarcsec on bright targets, and with flexible scheduling. The science topics are drawn primarily from the Team Key Projects, selected in 2000, for the Space Interferometry Mission PlanetQuest (SIM PlanetQuest). We use the capabilities of this mission to illustrate the importance of the next level of astrometric precision in modern astrophysics. SIM PlanetQuest is currently in the detailed design phase, having completed all of the enabling technologies needed for the flight instrument in 2005. It will be the first space-based long baseline Michelson interferometer designed for precision astrometry. SIM will contribute strongly to many astronomical fields including stellar and galactic astrophysics, planetary systems around nearby stars, and the study of quasar and AGN nuclei. SIM will search for planets with masses as small as an Earth orbiting in the `habitable zone' around the nearest stars using differential astrometry, and could discover many dozen if Earth-like planets are common. It will be the most capable instrument for detecting planets around young stars, thereby providing insights into how planetary systems are born and how they evolve with time. SIM will observe significant numbers of very high- and low-mass stars, providing stellar masses to 1%, the accuracy needed to challenge physical models. We apply a PCA-based pre-whitening method to the entire collection of main Kepler mission long-cadence data for KIC 8462852 spanning four years. This technique removes the correlated variations of instrumental origin in both the detected light curves and astrometry, resolving intrinsic changes in flux and image position of less than 100 ppm and 1 mas, respectively. Beside the major dips in the light curve during mission quarters 8 and 16, when the flux dropped by up to 20%, we confirm multiple smaller dips across the time span of observation with amplitudes ranging from 0.1% to 7%. A variation of flux with a period of 0.88 d and a half-amplitude of approximately 90 ppm is confirmed in the PCA-cleaned data. We find that the phase of the wave is steady over the entire 15-month interval. We confidently detect a weak variability-induced motion (VIM) effect in the cleaned astrometric trajectories, when the moment-based centroids shift synchronously with the flux dips by up to 0.0008 pixels on the detector. The inconsistent magnitude and direction of VIM effects within the same quarter point at more than one source of photometric variability in the blended image. The 0.88 d periodicity comes from a different source, not from the target star KIC 8462852. We discuss a possible interpretation of the bizarre properties of the source as a swarm of interstellar junk (comets and planetoids) crossing the line of sight to the star and its optical companions at approximately 7 mas per year., Comment: published in ApJ. We report a late M-type, common proper motion companion to a nearby young visual binary HIP 115147 (V368 Cep), separated by 963 arcseconds from the primary K0 dwarf. This optically dim star has been identified as a candidate high proper motion, nearby dwarf LSPM J2322+7847 by L{\'e}pine in 2005. The wide companion is one of the latest post-T Tauri low mass stars found within 20 pc. We obtain a trigonometric parallax of $51.6\pm0.8$ mas, in good agreement with the Hipparcos parallax of the primary star ($50.7\pm0.6$ mas). Our $BVRI$ photometric data and near-infrared data from 2MASS are consistent with LSPM J2322+7847 being brighter by 1 magnitude in $K_s$ than field M dwarfs at $V-K_s=6.66$, which indicates its pre-main sequence status. We conclude that the most likely age of the primary HIP 115147 and its 11-arcsecond companion HIP 115147B is 20-50 Myr. The primary appears to be older than its close analog PZ Tel (age 12-20 Myr) and members of the TWA association (7 Myr)., Comment: accepted in ApJL

Kinematical analysis of spectroscopically identified pre-main-sequence stars associated with the Lupus dark cloud reveals a streamlike motion of low internal velocity dispersion (≤1.3 km s-1). A statistically significant mismatch between the convergent point radial velocity and the spectroscopic radial velocity from the literature indicates a moderate degree of expansion. The rate of expansion is too low to account for the present extent of the association if one assumes that the spatially dispersed population was formed in the dense molecular cores observed today. Therefore, it is unlikely that the outlying weak-lined T Tauri members were born in the same star-forming cores as the more compactly located classical T Tauri stars, despite the kinematic integrity of the association. Distances inferred from the classical moving-cluster method show a large depth of the association (~80 pc) along the line of sight. A color-magnitude diagram of the association in the near-IR colors corrected for the distribution of distances shows a clear gap separating the older (5-27 Myr) and the younger (~1 Myr) generations of stars. Half of the identified 1 Myr old stars lie in the tight group of mostly classical T Tauri stars associated with the Lupus 3 dark filament. This nest of very young stars appears to be 25 pc farther from the Sun than the center of the greater Lupus association.

A systematic search for close conjunctions and clusterings in the past of nearby stars younger than the Pleiades is undertaken, which may reveal the time, location, and mechanism of formation of these often isolated, disconnected from clusters and star-forming regions, objects. The sample under investigation includes 101 T Tauri, post-TT, and main-sequence stars and stellar systems with signs of youth, culled from the literature. Their Galactic orbits are traced back in time and near approaches are evaluated in time, distance, and relative velocity. Numerous clustering events are detected, providing clues to the origin of very young, isolated stars. Each star's orbit is also matched with those of nearby young open clusters, OB and TT associations and star-forming molecular clouds, including the Ophiuchus, Lupus, Corona Australis, and Chamaeleon regions. Ejection of young stars from open clusters is ruled out for nearly all investigated objects, but the nearest OB associations in Scorpius-Centaurus, and especially, the dense clouds in Ophiuchus and Corona Australis have likely played a major role in the generation of the local streams (TWA, Beta Pic, and Tucana-Horologium) that happen to be close to the Sun today. The core of the Tucana-Horologium association probably originated from the vicinity of the Upper Scorpius association 28 Myr ago. A few proposed members of the AB Dor moving group were in conjunction with the coeval Cepheus OB6 association 38 Myr ago.

Tidal dissipation of kinetic energy, when it is strong enough, tends to synchronize the rotation of planets and moons with the mean orbital motion, or drive it into long-term stable spin-orbit resonances. As the orbital motion undergoes periodic acceleration due to a finite orbital eccentricity, the spin rate oscillates around the equilibrium mean value too, giving rise to the forced, or eccentricity-driven, librations. Both the shape and amplitude of forced librations of synchronous viscoelastic planets and moons are defined by a combination of two different types of perturbative torque, the tidal torque and the triaxial torque. Consequently, forced librations can be tidally dominated (e.g., Io and possibly Titan) or deformation-dominated (e.g., the Moon) depending on a set of orbital, rheological, and other physical parameters. With small eccentricities, for the former kind, the largest term in the libration angle can be minus cosine of the mean anomaly, whereas for the latter kind, it is minus sine of the mean anomaly. The shape and the amplitude of tidal forced librations determine the rate of orbital evolution of synchronous planets and moons, i.e., the rate of dissipative damping of semimajor axis and eccentricity. The known super-Earth exoplanets can exhibit both kinds of libration, or a mixture thereof, depending on, for example, the effective Maxwell time of their rigid mantles. Proper motions are computed and collected in a catalog using the Hipparcos positions (epoch 1991.25) and URAT1 positions (epoch 2012.3 to 2014.6). The goal is to obtain a significant improvement on the proper motion accuracy of single stars in the northern hemisphere, and to identify new astrometric binaries perturbed by orbital motion. For binaries and multiple systems, the longer baseline of Tycho2 (~ 100 yr) makes it more reliable despite its larger formal uncertainties. The resulting proper motions obtained for 67,340 stars have a consequent gain in accuracy by a factor of ~ 3 compared to Hipparcos. Comparison between UrHip and Hipparcos shows that they are reasonably close, but also reveals stars with large discrepant proper motions, a fraction of which are potential binary candidates., 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

The Origins Billions Star Survey is a mission concept addressing the astrophysics of extrasolar planets, Galactic structure, the Galactic halo and tidal streams, the Local Group and local supercluster of galaxies, dark matter, star formation, open clusters, the solar system, and the celestial reference frame by determining the position, parallax, and proper motion, as well as photometry, for billions of stars down to 23rd visual magnitude. It is capable of surveying the entire celestial sphere or dwelling on a star field by varying the cadence of observations. The mission's ability to measure objects fainter than 17th magnitude allows a large number of extragalactic compact objects to be observed, making the astrometric measurements absolute. The project mission accuracy is comparable to Gaia for a survey mission. Improved accuracy can be achieved by dwelling on a particular star field or by using the Gaia positions at 14th magnitude to improve the positions of objects at the 18th–23rd visual magnitudes.

One of the main endeavors of fundamental astrometry is to establish a practical realization of an inertial reference frame anchored to celestial objects whose positions are defined in the barycentric coordinates of the solar system. The development of astrometric facilities operating from space at a microarcsecond level of precision makes the non-uniformity of the galactic motion of the barycenter an observable effect that violates the inertiality of the barycentric frame. Most of the observable effect is caused by secular acceleration of the barycenter with respect to the center of the Galaxy. The acceleration results in a pattern of secular aberration which is observable astrometrically as a systematic vector field of the proper motions of distant quasars. We employ the vector spherical harmonics to describe the predicted field of the proper motions and evaluate its amplitude at each point on the celestial sphere. It is shown that the pattern of secular aberration is fully represented by three low-order electric-type vector harmonics, and hence, it is easily distinguishable from the residual rotations of the reference frame and other possible effects, such as the hypothetical long-period gravitational waves. Comprehensive numerical simulations of the grid astrometry with SIM PlanetQuest are conducted. The full covariance matrix of the simulated grid solution is used to evaluate the covariances of the three electric harmonic coefficients, representing the secular aberration pattern of proper motions. We conclude that the grid astrometry with SIM PlanetQuest will be sensitive to the main galactocentric component of secular acceleration, while the peculiar acceleration of the Sun with respect to LSR is expected to be too small to be detected with this astrometric space interferometer., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the paths of several probable members of the young association around the star TW Hydrae (TWA) with accurate distances, proper motions and radial velocities. We find that three of the previously identified members, TWA 1, TWA 4 and TWA 11, together with two other young nearby stars, HD 139084 and HD 220476, form a rapidly expanding association with an expansion age of 4.7 ± 0.6 Myr. Initial velocities of member stars with respect to the common centre of mass range from 4 to 10 km s −1 .A characteristic size of the association in the initial configuration is 21 pc, which may be somewhat biased upwards due to the uncertainties in the observational data. The Lower Centaurus Crux (LCC) OB association passed near TWA, at a distance of 36 ± 6 pc, 11 Myr ago. A plausible scenario, which accounts for the difference between the isochrone age (�10 Myr) and expansion age (5 Myr), is that star formation was stimulated in the TWA progenitor cloud by the near passage of the LCC, but that the newly formed stars were not released from the cloud until a subsequent collision with one of the other molecular clouds in the North Ophiuchus region. Vega was inside the TWA association, and close to its centre of gravity, at the time of maximum compression 4.7 Myr ago. If this alignment is a chance encounter, the powerful particular disc around Vega could have been enhanced by the passage through the TWA progenitor cloud at 8 km s −1 . Construction of an all-sky microarcsecond astrometric grid is an essential preliminary step toward global astrometry with the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM). The general setup of the global astrometry problem is given, and fast, robust algorithms to solve the problem are described. The results of extensive numerical simulations are used to outline the conditions necessary to achieve the performance goal of absolute astrometric accuracy. Rigorous computation of the global covariance matrix makes it possible to correctly interpret and utilize the SIM data. We formulate and resolve the new issue of the basic performance uncertainty of a single astrometric mission.

Useful constraints on the orbits and mass ratios of astrometric binaries in the Hipparcos catalog are derived from the measured proper motion differences of Hipparcos and Tycho-2 (??), accelerations of proper motions (), and second derivatives of proper motions (). It is shown how, in some cases, statistical bounds can be estimated for the masses of the secondary components. Two catalogs of astrometric binaries are generated, one of binaries with significant proper motion differences and the other of binaries with significant accelerations of their proper motions. Mathematical relations between the astrometric observables ??, , and and the orbital elements are derived in the appendices. We find a remarkable difference between the distribution of spectral types of stars with large accelerations but small proper motion differences and that of stars with large proper motion differences but insignificant accelerations. The spectral type distribution for the former sample of binaries is the same as the general distribution of all stars in the Hipparcos catalog, whereas the latter sample is clearly dominated by solar-type stars, with an obvious dearth of blue stars. We point out that the latter set includes mostly binaries with long periods (longer than about 6 yr).

Employing analytical and numerical tools, we expound the Galactic epicycle theory to describe the kinematic evolution of stellar, gravitationally unbound associations in the vicinity of the Sun. We estimate the limits of applicability of the analytical epicycle approximation and harmonic vertical motion by numerical integration of test orbits with an axisymmetric potential. We consider mainly early times when the associations are not too stretched out by differential Galactic rotation. If the member stars are ejected from a compact parental molecular cloud simultaneously, but with different velocities of ejection, the association remains as an entity for a long time. However, at a given time, individual velocities may vary widely among the members. The systematic differences of individual velocities does not allow one to apply the classical convergent point method even to young associations only several million years old. We demonstrate, however, that certain coordinate- and age-dependent corrections can be applied to the proper motions as observed in order to ‘rectify’ them and retrieve a common convergent point. This method can be used for determining the Oort's constants A and B, and for estimating the vertical frequency in the local part of the Galaxy and the expansion ages of nearby associations. In combination with the global convergence mapping technique, it can be used to search for yet-undiscovered nearby associations using the Hipparcos and Tycho-2 catalogues.
