4. Promoting Covariational Reasoning with the Aid of Digital Technology = Promoviendo el razonamiento covariacional con apoyo de la Tecnología digital

Abstract

In this paper, we present the development of an investigation on the promotion of covariational reasoning in high school students (14-15 years old) in Mexico. The study consists of designing and applying a sequence of didactic activities that simulate a real situation virtually. The activities are organized through a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory supported by digital technology and elements of Cuevas-Pluvinage didactics. The activities were evaluated according to the levels of covariation proposed by Carlson and colleagues, categorizing students' achievements and difficulties for each level of understanding. The results show that the activities favor students' progress by moving from the context situation to the different representations, establishing the relationship between the variables, and identifying their functional dependence. Abstract

In this report, we present an advance of doctoral research. We explore teaching alternatives that promote proportional reasoning in Mexican students between 14 and 15 years old with the support of digital technology. We designed a sequence of activities that pretends to signify the concepts of ratio and proportion in their diverse representations and from the perspective of linear functions. For the design of the tasks, elements of the Realistic Mathematics Education framework and Cuevas-Pluvinage Didactics were used. The learning objectives and proposed activities were organized through a hypothetical learning trajectory. Subject to presenting the group results, we randomly selected a student to present the analysis of the results achieved. We found that the tasks promoted proportional reasoning. Abstract

UNESCO's MAB Programme promotes a people-centered conservation strategy to strengthen the sustainability of social and ecological systems. However, there exist knowledge gaps regarding its implementation in specific contexts. For this study, a mixed-methods sequential exploratory design was employed. In the first phase, an initial content analysis of the management program of the El Cielo Biosphere Reserve (CBR) and the functions of the statutory framework of UNESCO's MAB program was conducted. This analysis, which was human-driven but facilitated by artificial intelligence tools, underwent rigorous triangulation and expert validation to strengthen the reliability and robustness of the findings. Subsequently, the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT3) was issued to researchers, community members, civil servants, and former civil servants related to the management of the CBR. The 2024 results (n = 15) were contrasted with those obtained in 2017 (n = 15) using a quantitative approach consisting of descriptive, non-parametric, and Bayesian statistical techniques. We identified some problems in the implementation of the MAB-UNESCO Programme in the CBR, mainly due to the outdated management program and lack of effective governance, as well as the lack of understanding of the implications of being a MAB-UNESCO biosphere reserve. A numerical trend of deterioration in the effectiveness of the CBR's management was detected, with overall ratings of 44.78% and 29.62% in 2017 and 2024, respectively. This was associated with a lack of regulation, weak coordination among key actors, and a progressive reduction in funding. The findings of this study are useful to guide the transition of the CBR towards a conservation model that responds to current problems and contributes to the advancement of knowledge on the implementation of the MAB Programme in specific contexts. Abstract

This study aims to present an integrative model assessing the impact of Food Biosafety Measures (FBM), e-Service Quality (e-SQ), and Product Quality (PQ) on Online Food Delivery Service (OFDS) brand image, e-consumer satisfaction (e-CS), and e-loyalty (e-LO), grounded in Expectation-Disconfirmation Theory (EDT). Employing a cross-sectional survey design, the study analyzed responses from 911 users in Bogotá and Medellín through structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). A multigroup analysis assessed differences across these two cities. The study found that FBM significantly enhances e-CS but does not directly impact brand image, suggesting other factors, such as e-SQ and PQ, play essential roles. E-SQ and PQ robustly influence brand image, which modestly affects both e-CS and e-LO. The study confirms that e-CS significantly fosters e-LO, with FBM indirectly influencing e-LO via e-CS. For OFDS managers and policymakers, emphasizing food biosecurity, service, and product quality is vital for enhancing consumer satisfaction and fostering loyalty. Geographical nuances revealed through multigroup analysis indicate the importance of region-specific strategies for service quality and market expansion. This research fills a gap in the OFDS literature by empirically validating non-food quality attributes in generating e-CS and, indirectly, e-LO. It highlights the complexity of brand image construction and provides a framework for OFDS brands to augment consumer satisfaction and loyalty in a dynamically evolving sector. Abstract

Introduction: Emergency medicine (EM) is in different stages of development around the world.Colombia has made significant strides in EM development in the last two decades and recognized it as amedical specialty in 2005. The country now has seven EM residency programs: three in the capital city ofBogotá, two in Medellin, one in Manizales, and one in Cali. The seven residency programs are in differentstages of maturity, with the oldest founded 20 years ago and two founded in the last two years. Theobjective of this study was to characterize these seven residency programs.Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with faculty and residents from all the existingprograms in 2013-2016. Topics included program characteristics and curricula.Results: Colombian EM residencies are three-year programs, with the exception of one four-yearprogram. Programs accept 3-10 applicants yearly. Only one program has free tuition and the rest chargetuition. The number of EM faculty ranges from 2-15. EM rotation requirements range from 11-33% oftotal clinical time. One program does not have a pediatric rotation. The other programs require 1-2months of pediatrics or pediatric EM. Critical care requirements range from 4-7 months. Other commonrotations include anesthesia, general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, orthopedics,ophthalmology, radiology, toxicology, psychiatry, neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, and trauma. Allprograms offer 4-6 hours of protected didactic time each week. Some programs require AdvancedCardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support, with someprograms providing these trainings in-house or subsidizing the cost. Most programs require one researchproject for graduation. Resident evaluations consist of written tests and oral exams several times per year.Point-of-care ultrasound training is provided in four of the seven programs.Conclusion: As emergency medicine continues to develop in Colombia, more residency programsare expected to emerge. Faculty development and sustainability of academic pursuits will be criticallyimportant. In the long term, the specialty will need to move toward certifying board exams andprofessional development through a national EM organization to promote standardization acrossprograms.

39. Survival Analysis of Male Patients with Brain Metastases at Initial Breast Cancer Diagnosis over the Last Decade.

Abstract

Simple Summary: Breast cancer in men is a very rare disease, representing less than 1% of all breast cancer diagnoses. An important percentage of patients with breast cancer will develop brain metastases during the course of their disease. There is very limited data about male patients with breast cancer and brain metastases. Our study evaluated a national database that included 22 patients with brain metastases at initial breast cancer diagnosis and found that tumor subtype, marital status, tumor grade, and other sociodemographic factors affect survival in this population. Further studies including new drugs are recommended to fully evaluate the response to novel treatments for this disease. Breast cancer in men represents approximately 1% of all breast cancer diagnoses. Among all patients with breast cancer, approximately 30% will develop brain metastases. Over the past decade, there have been multiple advances in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer; however, long-term outcomes of this presentation in male patients are lacking. We evaluated male patients with de novo stage IV breast cancer using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database from 2010 to 2019. Overall survival (OS) was estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method and differences between groups were compared using log rank tests. In total, 22 male patients with brain metastases at initial breast cancer diagnosis were included. Patients with HR-positive/HER2-negative tumors had the longest OS (median 13 months). Factors associated with shorter overall survival were advanced age, unmarried marital status, lower household income, and grade III disease, among others. Brain metastases remains an unmet medical need for patients with breast cancer; the development of new drugs may provide an improvement in overall survival for male patients in the future. Abstract

Climate change and governance conditions have made wildfires a critical issue that transcends academic and technical issues and enters socio-political arenas. In Latin America, indigenous peoples, peasant communities, peri-urban populations, firefighters, biodiversity and ecosystems are all vulnerable and threatened. This article describes the advances, challenges, limitations and progress in the development of a new paradigm of integrated fire management with an intercultural vision in Venezuela, from its beginnings in Canaima National Park to its later convergence with government actions and those of firefighters. The use and value of fire as a land management tool and the reintroduction of traditional indigenous practices must be incorporated into a national integrated fire management plan with an intercultural vision.
