5. The Mediating Role of Sexual Boredom in Women’s Sexual Desire and Satisfaction.

Abstract

AbstractSexual boredom in women is associated with various levels and dimensions of sexual desire, as well as lower sexual and relationship satisfaction. However, the directionality of these relationships remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether sexual boredom mediates the relationship between partner and attractive-other sexual desire and sexual and relationship satisfaction in a sample of 1155 Portuguese women in long-term monogamous relationships. Participants, aged 18-66 years (M = 31.60, SD = 5.65), were involved in cohabiting relationships of 1 year or more. Linear regression analysis and Structural Equation Modeling were conducted, revealing that sexual boredom emerged as a stronger predictor of sexual and relationship satisfaction compared to dimensions of sexual desire. Additionally, sexual boredom partially mediated the relationship between partnered sexual desire and satisfaction and fully mediated the relationship between attractive other-related sexual desire and satisfaction variables. Notably, sexual boredom explained up to one-third of sexual satisfaction (32%) and slightly less of relationship satisfaction (27%). These findings underscore the importance of addressing sexual boredom in long-term relationships to promote women’s sexual health. Furthermore, they suggest that experiencing sexual desire for attractive non-partners is not indicative of sexual and relationship dissatisfaction unless accompanied by sexual boredom. 6. Romantic jealousy: a transcultural comparison between the United States, Colombia, and Mexico.

Abstract

Romantic jealousy, a complex and universal emotion found across cultures, is influenced by societal norms and stems from the actual or threatened loss of one's partner to a rival. This study aimed to determine the transcultural equivalence of the Interpersonal Jealousy Scale across the United States, Colombia, and Mexico, and subsequently compare levels then to make comparisons of romantic jealousy. The research involved a total sample of 1,127 university students aged 18 to 23. Progressive factorial invariance analysis revealed a high degree of invariance for the 18-item unidimensional scale in all three countries. Asymmetry, kurtosis, and corrected total item correlation and reliability are also optimal. Significant differences were found between the total scores of the three countries, with Latin American countries being more similar to the US. Gender did not show a significant effect. The study identified that scenarios involving partner collaboration, receiving compliments, or shared interests with others resulted in lower jealousy levels. Conversely, situations related to reconnecting with old friends and possessiveness yielded varying responses, with the USA consistently displaying higher scores. The implications of these findings for future research are thoroughly discussed. LAY SUMMARY: This study provides the first assessment of romantic jealousy across different cultures using an equivalent scale. The results revealed that the United States had the highest scores for romantic jealousy, followed by Colombia and Mexico. Abstract

Abstract Background Infection by HIV and other STIs and unplanned pregnancies are among the most serious problems associated with sexuality. Male and female condoms are the only dual-purpose devices to control both unplanned pregnancies and STIs, and studying people’s attitudes toward the use of these devices are excellent ways to predict their use. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to adapt and validate the Female Condom Attitude Scale for Spanish language and to evaluate the use of female condoms in Colombian population. Methods For that purpose, a total of 387 Colombian women aged 23.68 years in average were asked to respond to the Female Condom Attitude Scale, the Sexual Opinion Survey, and the UCLA Multidimensional Condom Attitudes Scale. Results The use of female condom in Colombia is very low; only 5.10% of the surveyed women had used it at least once. On the other hand, results revealed a five-factor dimensionality (Sexual pleasure enhancement, Inconvenience, Improved prophylaxis, Sexual pleasure inhibition, and Insertion reluctance) with alphas between .81 and .96. The scale also showed adequate psychometric properties and criterion validity. No relationship was found between attitudes toward female condom and attitudes toward male condom. Conclusions The Spanish adaptation of the Female Condom Attitude Scale was found to be reliable and valid in a sample of young women.

Abstract

Attitudes toward condom use are among the best predictors of condom use. However, it is not entirely clear how these attitudes are shaped. This study aimed to assess the role of sexism in condom use attitudes. For this purpose, a total of 581 Colombian participants answered the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory, Ambivalent Toward Men Inventory, and Multidimensional Condom Attitudes Scale, including several sociodemographic and condom use questions. Non-representative sampling was virtually performed. The results show that hostile sexism is only a good predictor of negative attitudes toward condom use in men. Programs promoting sexual health should include elements that lessen this form of sexism among men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

32. Bullying among Spanish Secondary Education Students: The Role of Gender Traits, Sexism, and Homophobia

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to assess the combined influence of gender stereotypes, sexism, and homophobia on attitudes toward bullying and bullying behavior. A total of 1,500 Spanish adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age (49.3% girls and 50.7% boys) completed a questionnaire that included measures of bullying, attitudes toward bullying, gender-stereotyped personality traits (instrumentality and expressiveness), hostile and benevolent sexism, and attitudes toward gay men and lesbians. First, the findings demonstrated that boys scored significantly higher on all the variables assessed except on benevolent sexism. Two similar models were obtained for both sexes. Benevolent sexism and, in boys, more positive attitudes toward gay men predicted more negative attitudes toward bullying when mediated by more expressive gender traits. An inverse pattern was also observed: Hostile sexism predicted more favorable attitudes toward bullying when mediated by instrumental gender traits. Attitudes toward bullying were highly correlated with bullying behavior. The five-predictor variables (including attitudes toward bullying) explained 58% of the variance of bullying behavior in girls and 37% of such variance in boys.

Introduction/objective: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) -HIV included- are a major problem in Latin America, mainly in Colombia. In 2021, 17647 cases were reported, which compared to the previous year showed an increase of 29.7%. The main aim of this study was to assess the knowledge regarding HIV and other STIs among the adolescent population in Colombia. Method: A total of 2012 Colombian adolescents between 12-19 years of age participated in this study. The HIV and Other Sexually Transmitted Infections Knowledge Scale (KSI), a self-report measure, was administered. Results: The results showed moderate to low general knowledge (M = 9.90, SD = 4.64) regarding HIV and other STIs. Adolescents did not know if a tongue-kiss led to an HIV infection (75%), or whether both the vaginal ring and the IUD were effective methods for preventing HIV/AIDS (82%). Results showed better scores in knowledge regarding HIV transmission (84%), HIV testing (66%), and condom use to prevent HIV infection (71%). Conclusions: Significant differences were observed in HIV/STIs knowledge between both sexes, but the effect magnitudes were small. Thus, these differences were neglected. This study contributes to understanding the state of knowledge and strengthening prevention strategies of professionals linked to the field of quality of life, education, and sexual healthcare in Colombia. Para el 2021 se reportaron 17 647 casos, que comparados con el 2019 muestran un incremento del 29.7 %. El objetivo principal de este artículo fue evaluar el conocimiento sobre el VIH y otras ITS en la población adolescente de Colombia. Método: En este estudio participaron un total de 2012 adolescentes colombianos con edades entre los 12 y los 19 años. Se administró la Escala de Conocimientos sobre el VIH y otras infecciones de transmisión sexual (KSI) y una medida de autoinforme. Resultados: Los resultados mostraron un conocimiento general de moderado a bajo (M = 9.90, SD = 4.64) sobre el VIH y otras ITS. Las adolescentes no sabían si un beso con lengua conducía a una infección por el VIH (75 %) o si tanto el anillo vaginal como el DIU eran métodos efectivos para prevenir el VIH/SIDA (82 %). Los resultados mostraron mejores puntuaciones en conocimientos sobre la transmisión del VIH (84 %), pruebas de detección del VIH (66 %) y uso de preservativos para prevenir la infección por el VIH (71 %). Conclusiones: Se observaron diferencias significativas en el conocimiento del VIH/ ITS entre ambos sexos, pero los tamaños del efecto fueron pequeños. Por tanto, estas diferencias fueron despreciadas. Este estudio contribuye a comprender el estado del conocimiento y a fortalecer las estrategias de prevención que realizan los profesionales vinculados al campo de la calidad de vida, la educación y la salud sexual en Colombia.

Abstract

The purpose of this instrumental study was to show how to conduct an RStudio process to obtain a content validity visual representation through the alluvial function of the ggplot2 package to Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale (This paper explains the stages to analyze content validity using a visual representation of an interrater agreement and item – factor belonging and focused mainly on qualitative aspects to evaluate the judge’s behavior and items’ weight. Furthermore, the paper discusses classical criteria to obtain content validity and its representation. The visual representation used shows high relevance to present the qualitative data associated with the content validity analysis since it allows to visualize in a differential way the weight of the dimensions in each item, the content validity coefficient in the set of dimensions, and the behavior of the judges in the overall evaluation of the scale., L’objectif de cette étude instrumentale était de montrer comment mener un processus de RStudio pour obtenir une représentation visuelle de la validité du contenu par la fonction alluvionnaire de l’ensemble ggplot2 à l’échelle d’auto-efficacité de l’utilisation des préservatifs. Ce document explique les étapes de l’analyse de la validité du contenu à l’aide d’une représentation visuelle d’un accord entre les évaluateurs et de l’appartenance d’un élément à un facteur et se concentre principalement sur les aspects qualitatifs pour évaluer le comportement du juge et le poids des éléments. En outre, le document aborde les critères classiques pour obtenir la validité du contenu et sa représentation. La représentation visuelle utilisée montre une grande pertinence pour présenter les données qualitatives associées à l’analyse de la validité du contenu puisqu’elle permet de visualiser de manière différentielle le poids des dimensions dans chaque item, le coefficient de validité du contenu dans l’ensemble des dimensions et le comportement des juges dans l’évaluation globale de l’échelle., O objetivo deste estudo instrumental foi mostrar como conduzir um processo RStudio para obter uma representação visual da validade do conteúdo por meio da função aluvial do pacote ggplot2 para a Escala de Autoeficácia do Uso do Preservativo. Este artigo explica as etapas para analisar a validade de conteúdo usando uma representação visual de um acordo inter-avaliador e item - pertencimento de fator e focado principalmente em aspetos qualitativos para avaliar o comportamento do juiz e o peso dos itens. Além disso, o artigo discute critérios clássicos para obter validade de conteúdo e sua representação. A representação visual utilizada apresenta grande relevância para apresentar os dados qualitativos associados à análise de validade de conteúdo, pois permite visualizar de forma diferencial o peso das dimensões em cada item, o coeficiente de validade de conteúdo no conjunto de dimensões e o comportamento dos juízes na avaliação geral da escala., El propósito de este estudio instrumental fue mostrar cómo llevar a cabo un análisis a través de la plataforma RStudio para obtener una representación visual de validez de contenido usando la función aluvial del paquete ggplot2 para la escala Condom Use Self Efficacy. Este artículo explica las etapas para analizar la validez de contenido utilizando una representación visual del acuerdo entre evaluadores y la pertenencia de cada ítem enfocado principalmente en aspectos cualitativos que permiten a la vez evaluar el comportamiento del juez e identificar el peso otorgado a los ítems. Además, el documento discute acerca de los criterios clásicos para obtener la validez de contenido y su representación. La representación visual utilizada, muestra gran relevancia para presentar los datos cualitativos asociados al análisis de validez de contenido, ya que permite visualizar de manera diferencial el peso de las dimensiones en cada ítem, el coeficiente de validez de contenido en el conjunto de dimensiones y el comportamiento de los jueces en la evaluación general de la escala.

Abstract

Resumen tomado de la publicación Validación de la Orgasm Rating Scale en el contexto de la masturbación. Antecedentes: la Orgasm Rating Scale (ORS) evalúa la experiencia subjetiva del orgasmo. Sus propiedades psicométricas únicamente se examinaron en el contexto de las relaciones sexuales. El objetivo de este estudio es validar la ORS en el contexto de la masturbación en solitario. Método: una muestra formada por 1.171 hombres y 1.424 mujeres de 18 a 83 años (M = 40,51; DT = 12,07) completaron la ORS en el contexto de la masturbación en solitario junto con otras escalas para evaluar actitudes sexuales, deseo sexual solitario, propensión a la excitación/inhibición sexual y funcionamiento sexual. Resultados: se confirma una estructura de cuatro dimensiones, al igual que su versión homóloga para el contexto de las relaciones sexuales. Las medidas obtenidas mediante la ORS son invariantes por sexo y edad, sus dimensiones muestran una adecuada consistencia interna, discriminan entre personas con y sin dificultades orgásmicas y se relacionan con variables afines. Conclusiones: la ORS es una medida multidimensional que aporta medidas fiables y válidas de la experiencia subjetiva del orgasmo en el contexto de la masturbación en solitario. ESP

Abstract

Animal Welfare Attitudes (AWA) are defined as human attitudes towards the welfare of animals in different dimensions and settings. Demographic factors, such as age and gender are associated with AWA. The aim of this study was to assess gender differences among university students in a large convenience sample from twenty-two nations in AWA. A total of 7914 people participated in the study (5155 women, 2711 men, 48 diverse). Participants completed a questionnaire that collected demographic data, typical diet and responses to the Composite Respect for Animals Scale Short version (CRAS-S). In addition, we used a measure of gender empowerment from the Human Development Report. The largest variance in AWA was explained by diet, followed by country and gender. In terms of diet, 6385 participants reported to be omnivores, 296 as pescatarian, 637 ate a vegetarian diet and 434 were vegans (n = 162 without answer). Diet was related with CRAS-S scores, people with a vegan diet scored higher in AWA than omnivores. Women scored significantly higher on AWA than men. Furthermore, gender differences in AWA increased as gender inequality decreased.
