Abstract

Tsunamis constitute a significant hazard for European coastal populations, and the impact of tsunami events worldwide can extend well beyond the coastal regions directly affected. Understanding the complex mechanisms of tsunami generation, propagation, and inundation, as well as managing the tsunami risk, requires multidisciplinary research and infrastructures that cross national boundaries. Recent decades have seen both great advances in tsunami science and consolidation of the European tsunami research community. A recurring theme has been the need for a sustainable platform for coordinated tsunami community activities and a hub for tsunami services. Following about three years of preparation, in July 2021, the European tsunami community attained the status of Candidate Thematic Core Service (cTCS) within the European Plate Observing System (EPOS) Research Infrastructure. Within a transition period of three years, the Tsunami candidate TCS is anticipated to develop into a fully operational EPOS TCS. We here outline the path taken to reach this point, and the envisaged form of the future EPOS TCS Tsunami. Our cTCS is planned to be organised within four thematic pillars: (1) Support to Tsunami Service Providers, (2) Tsunami Data, (3) Numerical Models, and (4) Hazard and Risk Products. We outline how identified needs in tsunami science and tsunami risk mitigation will be addressed within this structure and how participation within EPOS will become an integration point for community development.

Abstract

The final summary report is addressed to professional stakeholders and presents the background, mission and main achievements of the SERA (Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Research Alliance for Europe) project. SERA’s networking activities were shaped to pool know-how, data, and tools to facilitate exchange between professionals and researchers from different fields. For this purpose, SERA organized several workshops for teachers, engineers and the interested public. SERA offered access to the largest collection of high-class experimental facilities for earthquake engineering in Europe to talented researchers from both academia and industry. The research facilities comprise reaction walls, shaking tables, facilities for integrated studies on geotechnical site effects and engineering seismology as well as an infrastructure for array seismology. SERA facilitated access to data and products of seismology, engineering seismology and anthropogenic seismicity to help seismologists understand the nature of earthquakes. SERA contributed to answering the question of how earthquakes start and evolve with multi-disciplinary science and joint research activities targeted on pooling data and expertise. SERA also delivered hazard and risk related products, which were based on the integration of competences from different domains. Abstract

The H2020 Project SERA (WP25-JRA3; http://www.sera-eu.org) is committed to updating and extending the 2013 European Seismic Hazard Model (ESHM13; Woessner et al., 2015, Bull. Earthquake Eng.) to form the basis of the next revision of the European seismic design code (CEN-EC8). Following the probabilistic framework established for ESHM13, the 2020 update (ESHM20) requires a continent-wide seismogenic model based on input from earthquake catalogs, tectonic information, and active faulting. The development of the European Fault-Source Model (EFSM20) fulfills the requirements related to active faulting. EFSM20 has two main categories of seismogenic faults: crustal faults and subduction systems. Crustal faults are meant to provide the hazard model with seismicity rates in a variety of tectonic contexts, including onshore and offshore active plate margins and plate interiors. Subduction systems are meant to provide the hazard model with both slab interface and intraslab seismicity rates. The model covers an area that encompasses a buffer of 300 km around all target European countries (except for Overseas Countries and Territories, OTCs), and a maximum of 300 km depth for slabs. The compilation of EFSM20 relies heavily on publicly available datasets and voluntarily contributed datasets spanning large regions, as well as solicited local contributions in specific areas of interest. The current status of the EFSM20 compilation includes 1,256 records of crustal faults for a total length of ~92,906 km and four subduction systems, namely the Gibraltar Arc, Calabrian Arc, Hellenic Arc, and Cyprus Arc. In this contribution, we present the curation of the main datasets and their associated information, the criteria for the prioritization and harmonization across the region, and the main strategy for transferring the earthquake fault-source input to the hazard modelers. Abstract

The Italian historical earthquake record is among the richest worldwide; as such it allows the development of advanced techniques for retrieving quantitative information by calibration with recent earthquakes. Building on a pilot elaboration of northern Italy earthquakes, we developed a procedure for determining the focal depth of all Italian earthquakes from intensity data alone. In a second step the procedure calculates their magnitude, taking into account the inferred depth. Focal depth exhibits a substantial variability countrywide, but so far received little attention: pre-instrumental earthquakes were routinely "flattened" at upper crustal level (~10 km), on the grounds that the calculation of focal depth is heavily dependent on the largely unknown local propagation properties. We gathered a learning set of 42 earthquakes documented by reliable instrumental data and by numerous intensity observations. Rather unexpectedly we observe (1) that within 50 km from the epicenter the ground motion attenuation rate is primarily controlled by focal depth and largely independent of magnitude; (2) that within this distance the fluctuations of crustal attenuation properties are negligible countrywide; and (3) that knowing both the depth and the expected epicentral intensity makes it possible to estimate a reliable magnitude. Abstract

We present a 1:10,000 scale map of the coseismic surface ruptures following the 26 December 2018 Mw 4.9 earthquake that struck the eastern flank of Mt. Etna volcano (southern Italy). Detailed rupture mapping is based on extensive field surveys in the epicentral region. Despite the small size of the event, we were able to document surface faulting for about 8 km along the trace of the NNW-trending active Fiandaca Fault, belonging to the Timpe tectonic system in the eastern flank of the volcano. The mapped ruptures are characterized in most cases by perceivable opening and by a dominant right-oblique sense of slip, with an average slip of about 0.09 m and a peak value of 0.35 m. It is also noteworthy that the ruptures vary significantly in their kinematic expression, denoting locally high degree of complexity of the surface faulting.

Abstract

The SEISMOFAULTS.EU repository hosts one of the main data provisions of EPOS-Seismology. As part of the EFHER facility for seismic hazard and risk services it delivers fault information tailored to be used as input data for earthquake hazard analyses. SEISMOFAULTS.EU builds upon the legacy of the Database of Individual Seismogenic Sources (DISS; http://diss.rm.ingv.it/diss/) and the European Database of Seismogenic Faults (EDSF; http://diss.rm.ingv.it/share-edsf/) which have already been used in several seismic hazard and tsunami hazard models.New challenges were recently set forth by the Joint Research Activities (JRA3) in Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Research Infrastructure Alliance for Europe (SERA) Project (www.sera-eu.org) whose ongoing activities to develop the new European Seismic Hazard Model 2020 (ESHM20) requires updated fault information at the pan-European scale. To fulfill this need, we are now developing the European Fault Source Model 2020 (EFSM20) which will be based on several national/regional compilations of active faults recently published by a large community of geoscientists. EFSM20 contains crustal faults, limited to those that are deemed capable of generating earthquakes of at least moment magnitude of 5.5, and subduction systems. The final release of EFSM20 will be integrated within the interoperable environment of the SERA Virtual Access for Engineering Seismology (VA3; http://sera-va3.rm.ingv.it/) together with the European Strong Motion Database (ESM) and the European Archive of Historical Earthquake Data (AHEAD).In this contribution we will describe the repository IT infrastructure, which is entirely built using free and open source software, the data and metadata distribution through the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) service standards. Abstract

Il progetto RETRACE-3D (centRal italy EarThquakes integRAted Crustal modEl) è volto alla caratterizzazione tridimensionale, geologica e sismotettonica, del volume di crosta terrestre che a partire dal 24 agosto 2016 è stato interessato dai terremoti di Amatrice, Visso e Norcia, e dalla relativa sequenza sismica. Il progetto è il risultato di una collaborazione tra il Dipartimento della Protezione Civile, l’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), il Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche che partecipa con l’Istituto di Geologia Ambientale e Geoingegneria (CNR-IGAG) e l’Istituto per il Rilevamento Elettromagnetico dell’Ambiente (CNR-IREA) e l’Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA), con la collaborazione di Eni e Total, realtà private ma anch’esse parte del Servizio nazionale della Protezione Civile, che hanno messo a disposizione i propri dati di sottosuolo. La finalità principale del progetto è stata ricostruire un quadro 3D di alta qualità della distribuzione dei diversi tipi di rocce nel sottosuolo in questa porzione di Appennino centralee delle possibili sorgenti sismogenetiche presenti in quel settore di crosta terrestre. Il progetto RETRACE-3D è stata un’occasione di lavoro multidisciplinare unica nel suo genere, alla quale hanno partecipato esperte ed esperti del Dipartimento della Protezione Civile e ricercatrici e ricercatori appartenenti ai Centri di Competenza del Dipartimento stesso, contribuendo al miglioramento delle conoscenze sui terremoti e ad una migliore valutazione della pericolosità sismica del territorio italiano. I percorsi di lavoro seguiti e le collaborazioni sviluppate all’interno del progetto sono da considerarsi di valore confrontabile con i risultati scientifici ottenuti, esi intende sottolineare come esperienze positive e propositive come quelle realizzate nel progetto RETRACE-3Dpossano costituire, in futuro, uno standard di azione e interazione tra i singoli ricercatori di diverse Istituzioni scientifiche e gli esperti del Dipartimento della Protezione Civile, anche al di fuori delle fasi emergenziali e post-emergenziali di una sequenza sismica. Il presente Rapporto finale è frutto dell’attività e dell’opinione degli autori. I contenuti non rappresentano necessariamente l’opinione generale delle istituzioni di cui i singoli autori fanno parte. La proprietà intellettuale dei risultati qui riportati è degli autori.
