Abstract

We find the inferred properties of the putative gravitational wave background in the second data release of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) to be in better agreement with theoretical expectations under the improved noise model. In particular, if the gravitational wave background is from supermassive black hole binaries, the observed gravitational wave emission is the dominant source of the binary energy loss, with no evidence of environmental effects, eccentric orbits, or an overabundance of sources. Our improved noise model addresses the misspecification of noise priors which impacts the inference of temporal correlations of the background. We also find evidence for epoch-correlated temporally-uncorrelated (white) noise which has a stronger impact on the measurement in the presence of Hellings-Downs correlations of the background., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) and Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA) collaborations have measured a low-frequency common signal in the combination of their second and first data releases respectively, with the correlation properties of a gravitational wave background (GWB). Such signal may have its origin in a number of physical processes including a cosmic population of inspiralling supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs); inflation, phase transitions, cosmic strings and tensor mode generation by non-linear evolution of scalar perturbations in the early Universe; oscillations of the Galactic potential in the presence of ultra-light dark matter (ULDM). At the current stage of emerging evidence, it is impossible to discriminate among the different origins. Therefore, in this paper, we consider each process separately, and investigate the implications of the signal under the hypothesis that it is generated by that specific process. We find that the signal is consistent with a cosmic population of inspiralling SMBHBs, and its relatively high amplitude can be used to place constraints on binary merger timescales and the SMBH-host galaxy scaling relations. If this origin is confirmed, this is the first direct evidence that SMBHBs merge in nature, adding an important observational piece to the puzzle of structure formation and galaxy evolution. As for early Universe processes, the measurement would place tight constraints on the cosmic string tension and on the level of turbulence developed by first-order phase transitions. Other processes would require non-standard scenarios, such as a blue-tilted inflationary spectrum or an excess in the primordial spectrum of scalar perturbations at large wavenumbers. Abstract

State-of-the-art searches for gravitational waves (GWs) in pulsar timing array (PTA) datasets model the signal as an isotropic, Gaussian, and stationary process described by a power law. In practice, none of these properties are expected to hold for an incoherent superposition of GWs generated by a cosmic ensemble of supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs). This stochastic signal is usually referred to as the GW background (GWB) and is expected to be the primary signal in the PTA band. We performed a systematic investigation of the performance of current search algorithms, using a simple power-law model to characterise GW signals in realistic datasets. We used, as the baseline dataset, synthetic realisations of timing residuals mimicking the European PTA (EPTA) second data release (DR2). Thus, we included in the dataset uneven time stamps, achromatic and chromatic red noise, and multi-frequency observations. We then injected timing residuals from an ideal isotropic, Gaussian, single power-law stochastic process and from a realistic population of SMBHBs, performing a methodical investigation of the recovered signal. We found that current search models are efficient at recovering the GW signal, but several biases can be identified due to the signal-template mismatch, which we identified via probability-probability (P- P) plots and quantified using Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) statistics. We discuss our findings in light of the signal observed in the EPTA DR2 and corroborate its consistency with a SMBHB origin.

Abstract

In a growing number of contexts of use, chatbots are becoming an increasingly adopted interaction strategy. This paper explores the idea of using a chatbot in two key areas of interest: Customer service and Personal assistants. Specifically, we are interested in researching the acceptance level of this technology with regard to a user's set of behaviours, which defines the interaction process between users and chatbots. The main aim is to present a model to evaluate the most important factors that impact the acceptance of chatbots by users. To do it we devised an extension of the UTAUT model to assess the quality of the chatbot's communication in terms of completeness, clarity and transparency and to evaluate how much the user can trust a chatbot regarding privacy issues. The results demonstrate good effects on what concerns the acceptance of our chatbots by users.

Abstract

This paper illustrates the research and development work done in the last 4 years in the frame of rescue operations of migrants who attempt to reach Italian coasts via sea journeys on Mediterranean routes. The context, characterized by humanitarian, social, and organizational issues, presents complex challenges that can only be tackled with a multidisciplinary, participatory, and internationalized approach. The ITHEALTH system and the results of its usability and user experience evaluations are presented. It takes inspiration from other projects developed for different purposes but acting in similar context and according to similar socio-technical dimensions.

Abstract

Introduction: Adolescents with cancer often experience a longer diagnostic delay than children, mainly because they take longer to go to a doctor. The Italian Society for Adolescents with Oncohematological Diseases (SIAMO) has launched an information campaign focusing on raising adolescents' awareness of the importance of diagnosing cancer early. Methods: The concepts of the campaign were developed by a scientific committee of clinicians, cancer patients and their parents, and marketing experts. The title of the campaign is "There's no reason why". A video has been launched on TV channels and the Internet, and the final frame refers viewers to the SIAMO website, which provides advice to help adolescents interpret any symptoms they experience. Results: The video has had 12,181 views. In the 6 months following the launch of the campaign, the SIAMO website page dedicated to the campaign was opened by 9,767 viewers for a total of 13,632 views. Conclusions: Though it remains very difficult to judge the efficacy of this initiative, the value of a campaign focusing on improving the adolescent population's cancer awareness is supported by the large number of studies published on the diagnostic delay in this age group. Our campaign goes to show the importance of ensuring cooperation between the different stakeholders involved in the global care of adolescents with cancer.

Abstract

This paper aims to shed light on an emerging class of phenomena that are related to the abundance of data, which either come from personal life records or from open data portals, and to the strategies to tame this abundance to enable the human making of sense and decision. In particular, a new category can be introduced for these kind of data, which are neither primary (that is being deeply engrained into a work practice), nor secondary (i.e., processed by and for specialists, like the members of clerical, managerial or research staff) but, in a way, "tertiary", as they are consumed (when not directly produced) by "final customers". Hence, new ways of engaging users to either enable or facilitate the direct comprehension, and the ad-hoc manipulation and tailoring of data to unpredictable and unstructured tasks should be devised, also by means of more active and inter-active visualization techniques, in order to reduce the information overload and to let users shape their data landscapes in a virtuos cycle that may also return benefit to the same (primary) production and uses of data. In so doing, both data can partake in the end-users lives and these latter partake in improving the quality of data in face of the current (open) big data tide.

Abstract

Today end users are no longer mere consumers of computer tools but increasingly need to be more active producers of information and software artifacts. New techniques for engineering software are needed to support end users in this new role. This paper introduces one of these techniques, namely unwitting end-user development, and explains the BANCO architecture, which has been designed to support unwitting end-user development allowing the creation of systems customized to end-user culture, end-user role, and platform in use, as well as system re-use and evolution. It also supports consistency in interaction styles, particularly in web applications. This reasoning is made concrete through an example that presents a factory-automation prototype built using the BANCO architecture.

Abstract

Diamond-Blackfan anaemia (DBA) is a congenital disease characterized by defective erythroid progenitor maturation; 30% of patients have congenital malformations. The link between these malformations and defective erythropoiesis is unclear: a defect in a molecule acting both on embryo development and haemopoiesis has been proposed, Inheritance is autosomal dominant in most familial cases, but recessive families have also been reported. Many cases are sporadic. A DBA locus has been mapped on chromosome 19q13.2 (Gustavsson et al, 1997), but several families unlinked to this locus have also been reported (Gustavsson et al, 1998).This paper presents clinical, epidemiological and molecular data for DBA in the Italian population, Segregation analysis of 19q markers in patients with DBA showed exclusion of this locus in 5/12 families with inherited DBA. There was evidently locus heterogeneity for DBA in this population. A new microdeletion was identified in one patient. Other families, in which DBA segregates concordantly with the 19q critical region, suggest incomplete penetrance and expressivity of the DBA gene.

Abstract

The European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) and Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA) collaborations have measured a low-frequency common signal in the combination of their second and first data releases respectively, with the correlation properties of a gravitational wave background (GWB). Such signal may have its origin in a number of physical processes including a cosmic population of inspiralling supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs); inflation, phase transitions, cosmic strings and tensor mode generation by non-linear evolution of scalar perturbations in the early Universe; oscillations of the Galactic potential in the presence of ultra-light dark matter (ULDM). At the current stage of emerging evidence, it is impossible to discriminate among the different origins. Therefore, in this paper, we consider each process separately, and investigate the implications of the signal under the hypothesis that it is generated by that specific process. We find that the signal is consistent with a cosmic population of inspiralling SMBHBs, and its relatively high amplitude can be used to place constraints on binary merger timescales and the SMBH-host galaxy scaling relations. If this origin is confirmed, this is the first direct evidence that SMBHBs merge in nature, adding an important observational piece to the puzzle of structure formation and galaxy evolution. As for early Universe processes, the measurement would place tight constraints on the cosmic string tension and on the level of turbulence developed by first-order phase transitions. Other processes would require non-standard scenarios, such as a blue-tilted inflationary spectrum or an excess in the primordial spectrum of scalar perturbations at large wavenumbers. Finally, a ULDM origin of the detected signal is disfavoured, which leads to direct constraints on the abundance of ULDM in our Galaxy.

Abstract

Previous work has shown that end-user developers (EUDs) find diagnosing and fixing circuit bugs in physical computing prototypes challenging. This paper reports on the design of a card deck to support troubleshooting by novice EUDs. The deck provides EUDs with ideas for different troubleshooting tactics and guides them in their use by encouraging reflection to help build EUDs’ troubleshooting knowledge and skill. We describe the design process and the resulting card deck. Our work contributes a new way of supporting EUDs in troubleshooting physical computing prototypes.

Abstract

This paper aims to shed light on an emerging class of phenomena that are related to the abundance of data, which either come from personal life records or from open data portals, and to the strategies to tame this abundance to enable the human making of sense and decision. In particular, a new category can be introduced for these kind of data, which are neither primary (that is being deeply engrained into a work practice), nor secondary (i.e., processed by and for specialists, like the members of clerical, managerial or research staff) but, in a way, "tertiary", as they are consumed (when not directly produced) by "final customers". Hence, new ways of engaging users to either enable or facilitate the direct comprehension, and the ad-hoc manipulation and tailoring of data to unpredictable and unstructured tasks should be devised, also by means of more active and inter-active visualization techniques, in order to reduce the information overload and to let users shape their data landscapes in a virtuos cycle that may also return benefit to the same (primary) production and uses of data. In so doing, both data can partake in the end-users lives and these latter partake in improving the quality of data in face of the current (open) big data tide.

Abstract

A common cause for inconsistent accessibility in the design of ICT applications is that designers work to develop optimal and satisfactory interfaces but they do not take care to comply with all users' needs and possibilities to access. The study presented in this paper stems from a lack of published evidence able to support designs in developing accessible interfaces for websites, mobile apps or conversational Interfaces (chatbot or voicebot). This work aims at investigating accessible design patterns that can be used by designers to implement applications accessible by multiple devices. To solve this problem, we propose a design pattern language able to provide WCAG compliant design out-of-the-box solutions. The navigation through the design patterns allows designers to gather existing solutions based on solid evidence and examples to develop inclusive applications accessible by web, mobile devices or conversational agents.

Abstract

Introduction: Adolescents with cancer often experience a longer diagnostic delay than children, mainly because they take longer to go to a doctor. The Italian Society for Adolescents with Oncohematological Diseases (SIAMO) has launched an information campaign focusing on raising adolescents' awareness of the importance of diagnosing cancer early., Methods: The concepts of the campaign were developed by a scientific committee of clinicians, cancer patients and their parents, and marketing experts. The title of the campaign is "There's no reason why". A video has been launched on TV channels and the Internet, and the final frame refers viewers to the SIAMO website, which provides advice to help adolescents interpret any symptoms they experience., Results: The video has had 12,181 views. In the 6 months following the launch of the campaign, the SIAMO website page dedicated to the campaign was opened by 9,767 viewers for a total of 13,632 views., Conclusions: Though it remains very difficult to judge the efficacy of this initiative, the value of a campaign focusing on improving the adolescent population's cancer awareness is supported by the large number of studies published on the diagnostic delay in this age group. Our campaign goes to show the importance of ensuring cooperation between the different stakeholders involved in the global care of adolescents with cancer.
