This study aims to synthesize a guest-host complex derived from rutin (Rut) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) (denoted as [Rut⊂β-CD]). The obtained substance was characterized by the FT-IR and DSC methods, signifying the formation of an inclusion complex between Rut and β-CD. Complex formation increased the antioxidant activity of rutin corresponding to the decrease of EC 50 values from 1.547 × 10 -5 mol L -1 to 1.227 × 10 -5 mol L -1 according to the DPPH free radical scavenging test. The rutin-β-CD interaction energies were calculated in the vacuum and various solvents ( e.g. , water, ethanol, and dimethylsulfoxide) utilizing an accurate and broadly parametrized self-consistent tight-binding quantum chemical method (GFN2-xTB). The calculation results reveal the influence of solvent on the structural formation of the rutin-β-CD complex. In both the vacuum and aqueous solution, rutin can enter into the small-sized empty cavity of β-CD, albeit through different terminals, resulting in distinct preferential structures. We tested a new A/H1N1 inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) manufactured by Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologics (IVAC), Vietnam in 48 adults in a Phase 1, double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Two doses of unadjuvanted vaccine or placebo were administered three weeks apart. The vaccine was well tolerated with only transient mild local reactions and low-grade fever in a small proportion of the subjects. One serious adverse event considered unrelated to the study product was reported. The IVAC vaccine proved to be highly immunogenic with 91 percent (95% CI: 0.78, 1) of the subjects developing a ≥4 fold immune responses by hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) assay, and 96 percent (95% CI: 0.78, 1) by the microneutralization (MN) assay. Post-vaccination geometric mean titers (GMTs) were 283.7 (95% CI: 161.7, 497.5) in the HAI and 725.7 (95% CI: 411.3, 1280.3) in the MN assay. Background: Infectious diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) remain common and life-threatening, especially in developing countries. Knowledge of the aetiological agents responsible for these infections is essential to guide empiric therapy and develop a rational public health policy. To date most data has come from patients admitted to tertiary referral hospitals in Asia and there is limited aetiological data at the provincial hospital level where most patients are seen., Methods: We conducted a prospective Provincial Hospital-based descriptive surveillance study in adults and children at thirteen hospitals in central and southern Viet Nam between August 2007-April 2010. The pathogens of CNS infection were confirmed in CSF and blood samples by using classical microbiology, molecular diagnostics and serology., Results: We recruited 1241 patients with clinically suspected infection of the CNS. An aetiological agent was identified in 640/1241 (52%) of the patients. The most common pathogens were Streptococcus suis serotype 2 in patients older than 14 years of age (147/617, 24%) and Japanese encephalitis virus in patients less than 14 years old (142/624, 23%). Mycobacterium tuberculosis was confirmed in 34/617 (6%) adult patients and 11/624 (2%) paediatric patients. The acute case fatality rate (CFR) during hospital admission was 73/617 (12%) in adults and to 42/624 (7%) in children., Conclusions: Zoonotic bacterial and viral pathogens are the most common causes of CNS infection in adults and children in Viet Nam.
