Search

The Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope (WST) is proposed as a new facility dedicated to the efficient delivery of spectroscopic surveys. This white paper summarises the initial concept as well as the corresponding science cases. WST will feature simultaneous operation of a large field-of-view (3 sq. degree), a high multiplex (20,000) multi-object spectrograph (MOS) and a giant 3x3 sq. arcmin integral field spectrograph (IFS). In scientific capability these requirements place WST far ahead of existing and planned facilities. Given the current investment in deep imaging surveys and noting the diagnostic power of spectroscopy, WST will fill a crucial gap in astronomical capability and work synergistically with future ground and space-based facilities. This white paper shows that WST can address outstanding scientific questions in the areas of cosmology; galaxy assembly, evolution, and enrichment, including our own Milky Way; origin of stars and planets; time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics. WST's uniquely rich dataset will deliver unforeseen discoveries in many of these areas. The Gaia mission is delivering a large number of astrometric orbits for binary stars. By combining these with spectroscopic orbits for systems with two observable spectra (SB2), it is possible to derive the masses of both components. However, to get masses with a good accuracy requires accurate spectroscopic orbits, which is the major aim of the present paper. A subsidiary aim is to discover SB2 systems hiding among known SB1, and even though this search may often prove unsuccessful, the acquired radial velocities may be used anyway to improve the existing spectroscopic orbits. New radial velocities for 58 binary systems from the Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (SB9), obtained using the high-resolution HERMES spectrograph installed on the 1.2 m Mercator telescope, were used to possibly identify hitherto undetected SB2 systems. For SB1 systems with inaccurate orbits, these new radial-velocity measurements were used to improve the orbital accuracy. This paper provides 51 orbits (41 SB1 and 10 SB2) that have been improved with respect to the solution listed in the SB9 catalogue, out of the 58 SB9 orbits studied, which belong to 56 stellar systems. Among them, there are five triple and four quadruple systems. Despite the high resolution of HERMES, HIP 115142 A is the only system which we detected as a new SB2 system. The B component of the visual binary HIP 92726 has now been found to be a spectroscopic system as well, which makes HIP 92726 a newly discovered quadruple system (SB1+SB1). The high HERMES resolution allowed us moreover to better isolate the signature of the secondary component of HIP 12390, HIP 73182 and HIP 111170. More accurate masses have thus been derived for them. Among the 30 SB also present in Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) and with periods shorter than the Gaia DR3 time span (1000 d), only 5 were flagged as binaries by DR3., Comment: 27 pages, many figures, 6 tables. The High-Resolution Multi-Object Spectrograph (HRMOS) is a facility instrument that we plan to propose for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), following the initial presentation at the VLT 2030 workshop held at ESO in June 2019. HRMOS provides a combination of capabilities that are essential to carry out breakthrough science across a broad range of active research areas from stellar astrophysics and exoplanet studies to Galactic and Local Group archaeology. HRMOS fills a gap in capabilities amongst the landscape of future instrumentation planned for the next decade. The key characteristics of HRMOS will be high spectral resolution (R = 60000 - 80000) combined with multi-object (20-100) capabilities and long term stability that will provide excellent radial velocity precision and accuracy (10m/s). Initial designs predict that a SNR~100 will be achievable in about one hour for a star with mag(AB) = 15, while with the same exposure time a SNR~ 30 will be reached for a star with mag(AB) = 17. The combination of high resolution and multiplexing with wavelength coverage extending to relatively blue wavelengths (down to 380\,nm), makes HRMOS a spectrograph that will push the boundaries of our knowledge and that is envisioned as a workhorse instrument in the future. Representative samples of F-, G-, K-type stars located out of the Solar Neighbourhood has started to be available in spectroscopic surveys. The fraction of metal-poor ([Fe/H]~$\lesssim -0.8$~dex) giants becomes increasingly relevant to far distances. In metal-poor stars, effective temperatures ($T_{\mathrm{eff}}$) based on LTE spectroscopy and on former colour-$T_{\mathrm{eff}}$ relations of still wide use have been reported to be inaccurate. It is necessary to re-calibrate chemical abundances based on these $T_{\mathrm{eff}}$ scales in the multiple available surveys to bring them to the same standard scale for their simultaneous use. For that, a complete sample of standards is required, which so far, is restricted to a few stars with quasi-direct $T_{\mathrm{eff}}$ measurements. We aim at providing a legacy sample of metal-poor standards with proven accurate atmospheric parameters. We add 47 giants to the sample of metal-poor dwarfs of Giribaldi et al. 2021, thereby constituting the Titans metal-poor reference stars. $T_{\mathrm{eff}}$ was derived by 3D non-LTE H$\alpha$ modelling, whose accuracy was tested against interferometry and InfraRed Flux Method (IRFM). Surface gravity (log $g$) was derived by fitting Mg~I~b triplet lines, whose accuracy was tested against asteroseismology. Metallicity was derived using Fe II lines, which was verified to be identical to the [Fe/H] derived from non-LTE spectral synthesis. $T_{\mathrm{eff}}$ from 3D non-LTE H$\alpha$ is equivalent to interferometric and IRFM temperatures within a $\pm$46~K uncertainty. We achieved precision of $\sim$50~K for 34 stars with spectra with the highest S/N. For log $g$, we achieved a total uncertainty of $\pm$0.15~dex. For [Fe/H], we obtained a total uncertainty of $\pm$0.09~dex. We find that the ionization equilibrium of Fe lines under LTE is not valid in metal-poor giants., Comment: Accepted in A&A

The technetium-rich (Tc-rich) M stars reported in the literature (Little-Marenin & Little (1979); Uttenthaler et al. (2013)) are puzzling objects since no isotope of technetium has a half-life longer than a few million years, and 99Tc, the longest-lived isotope along the s-process path, is expected to be detected only in thermally-pulsing stars enriched with other s-process elements (like zirconium). Carbon should also be enriched, since it is dredged up at the same time, after each thermal pulse on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). However, these Tc-enriched objects are classified as M stars, meaning that they neither have any significant zirconium enhancement (otherwise they would be tagged as S-type stars) nor any large carbon overabundance (in which case they would be carbon stars). Here we present the first detailed chemical analysis of a Tc-rich M-type star, namely S Her. We first confirm the detection of the Tc lines, and then analyze its carbon and s-process abundances, and draw conclusions on its evolutionary status. S stars are late-type giants that are transition objects between M-type stars and carbon stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). They are classified into two types: intrinsic or extrinsic, based on the presence or absence of technetium (Tc). The Tc-rich or intrinsic S stars are thermally-pulsing (TP-)AGB stars internally producing s-process elements (including Tc) which are brought to their surface via the third dredge-up (TDU). Tc-poor or extrinsic S stars gained their s-process overabundances via accretion of s-process-rich material from an AGB companion which has since turned into a dim white dwarf. Our goal is to investigate the evolutionary status of Tc-rich S stars by locating them in a Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram using the results of Gaia early Data Release 3 (EDR3). We combine the current sample of 13 Tc-rich stars with our previous studies of 10 Tc-rich stars to determine the observational onset of the TDU in the metallicity range [-0.7; 0]. We also compare our abundance determinations with dedicated AGB nucleosynthesis predictions. The stellar parameters are derived using an iterative tool which combines HERMES high-resolution spectra, accurate Gaia EDR3 parallaxes, stellar evolution models and tailored MARCS model atmospheres for S-type stars. Using these stellar parameters we determine the heavy-element abundances by line synthesis. In the HR diagram, the intrinsic S stars are located at higher luminosities than the predicted onset of the TDU. These findings are consistent with Tc-rich S stars being genuinely TP-AGB stars. The comparison of the derived s-process abundance profiles of our intrinsic S stars with the nucleosynthesis predictions provide an overall good agreement. The knowledge of the structure and dynamics of AGB-star atmospheres is crucial to better understand the mass loss. The tomographic method, that relies on the design of spectral masks containing lines forming in given ranges of optical depths in the stellar atmosphere, is an ideal technique for this purpose. It is applied to high-resolution spectro-interferometric VLTI/AMBER observations of the Mira-type AGB star S Ori. First, the interferometric visibilities are extracted at wavelengths contributing to the tomographic masks and fitted to those computed from a uniform disk model. This allows the measurement of the geometrical extent of the atmospheric layer probed by the corresponding mask. Then, we compare the observed atmospheric extension with those measured from available 1D pulsation CODEX models and 3D radiative-hydrodynamics CO5BOLD simulations. We found that while the average optical depths probed by the tomographic masks in S Ori decrease (with $<\log \tau_0> = -0.45$, $-1.45$, and $-2.45$ from the innermost to the central and outermost layers), the angular diameters of these layers increase, from 10.59 $\pm$ 0.09 mas through 11.84 $\pm$ 0.17 mas, up to 14.08 $\pm$ 0.15 mas. A similar behavior is observed when the tomographic method is applied to 1D and 3D dynamical models. Thus, this study derives, for the first time, a quantitative relation between optical- and geometrical-depth scales when applied to the Mira star S Ori, or to 1D and 3D dynamical models. In the context of Mira-type stars, the knowledge of the link between the optical and geometrical depths opens the way to derive the shock-wave propagation velocity, which can not be directly observed in these stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

(Abridged) The Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is an end-to-end science platform for the design, execution and scientific exploitation of spectroscopic surveys. It will unveil the composition and dynamics of the faint Universe and impact nearly every field of astrophysics across all spatial scales, from individual stars to the largest scale structures in the Universe. Major pillars in the science program for MSE include (i) the ultimate Gaia follow-up facility for understanding the chemistry and dynamics of the distant Milky Way, including the outer disk and faint stellar halo at high spectral resolution (ii) galaxy formation and evolution at cosmic noon, via the type of revolutionary surveys that have occurred in the nearby Universe, but now conducted at the peak of the star formation history of the Universe (iii) derivation of the mass of the neutrino and insights into inflationary physics through a cosmological redshift survey that probes a large volume of the Universe with a high galaxy density. Context- S stars are late-type giants with spectra showing characteristic molecular bands of ZrO in addition to the TiO bands typical of M stars. Their overabundance pattern shows the signature of s-process nucleosynthesis. Intrinsic, technetium (Tc)-rich S stars are the first objects, on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB), to undergo third dredge-up (TDU) events. Gaia exquisite parallaxes now allow to precisely locate these stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram. Here we report on a population of low-mass, Tc-rich S stars, previously unaccounted for by stellar evolution models. Aims- Our aim is to derive parameters of a sample of low-mass Tc-rich S stars and then, by comparing their location in the HR diagram with stellar evolution tracks, to derive their masses and to compare their measured s-process abundance profiles with recently derived STAREVOL nucleosynthetic predictions for low-mass AGB stars. Methods- The stellar parameters were obtained using a combination of HERMES high-resolution spectra, accurate Gaia Data Release 2 (Gaia-DR2) parallaxes, stellar-evolution models and newly-designed MARCS model atmospheres for S-type stars. Results- We report on 6 Tc-rich S stars lying close to the 1 Msun (initial mass) tracks of AGB stars of the corresponding metallicity and above the predicted onset of TDU, as expected. This provides direct evidence for TDUs occurring in AGB stars with initial masses as low as ~ 1 Msun and at low luminosity, i.e. at the start of the thermally-pulsing AGB. We present AGB models producing TDU in those stars with [Fe/H] in the range -0.25 to -0.5. There is a reasonable agreement between the measured and predicted s-process abundance profiles. For 2 objects however (CD -29 5912 and BD +34 1698), the predicted C/O ratio and s-process enhancements do not match simultaneously the measured ones., Comment: Recommended for publication in A&A letters

The Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is a planned 11.25-m aperture facility with a 1.5 square degree field of view that will be fully dedicated to multi-object spectroscopy. A rebirth of the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Maunakea, MSE will use 4332 fibers operating at three different resolving powers (R ~ 2500, 6000, 40000) across a wavelength range of 0.36-1.8mum, with dynamical fiber positioning that allows fibers to match the exposure times of individual objects. MSE will enable spectroscopic surveys with unprecedented scale and sensitivity by collecting millions of spectra per year down to limiting magnitudes of g ~ 20-24 mag, with a nominal velocity precision of ~100 m/s in high-resolution mode. S-type stars are late-type giants enhanced with s-process elements originating either from nucleosynthesis during the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) or from a pollution by a binary companion. The former are called intrinsic S stars, and the latter extrinsic S stars. The intrinsic S stars are on the AGB and have undergone third dredge-up events. The atmospheric parameters of S stars are more numerous than those of M-type giants (C/O ratio and s-process abundances affect the thermal structure and spectral synthesis), and hence they are more difficult to derive. These atmospheric parameters are also entangled within each other. Nevertheless, high-resolution spectroscopic data of S stars combined with the Gaia Data Release 2 (GDR2) parallaxes and with the MARCS model atmospheres for S-type stars were used to derive effective temperatures, surface gravities, and luminosities. S stars are transition objects between M-type giants and carbon stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). They are characterized by overabundances of s-process elements. Roughly half of them are enhanced in technetium (Tc), an s-process element with no stable isotope, while the other half lack technetium. This dichotomy arises from the fact that Tc-rich S stars are intrinsically producing s-process elements and have undergone third dredge-up (TDU) events, while Tc-poor S stars owe their s-process overabundances to a past pollution by a former AGB companion. Our aim is to analyse the abundances of S stars and gain insights into their evolutionary status and on the nucleosynthesis of heavy s-process elements taking place in their interior. In particular, the location of extrinsic and intrinsic S stars in the HR diagram will be compared with the theoretical onset of the TDU on the thermally-pulsing AGB. A sample of 19 S-type stars was analysed by combining HERMES high-resolution spectra, accurate Gaia Data Release 2 (GDR2) parallaxes, stellar-evolution models, and newly-designed MARCS model atmospheres for S-type stars. Combining the derived parameters with GDR2 parallaxes allows a joint analysis of the location of the stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and of their surface abundances. For all 19 stars, Zr and Nb abundances are derived, complemented by abundances of other s-process elements for the three Tc-rich S stars. These abundances agree within the uncertainties with nucleosynthesis predictions for stars of corresponding mass, metallicity and evolutionary stage. Most extrinsic S stars lie close to the tip of the red giant branch (RGB), and a few are located along the early AGB. In order to identify diagnostics distinguishing between pre- and post-mass-transfer systems, the mass-ratio distribution and period - eccentricity (P - e) diagram of barium and S stars are compared to those of the sample of binary red giants in open clusters from Mermilliod et al. (2007). From the analysis of the mass-ratio distribution for the cluster binary giants, we find an excess of systems with companion masses between 0.58 and 0.87 Msun, typical for white dwarfs. They represent 22% of the sample, which are thus candidate post-mass-transfer systems. Among these candidates which occupy the same locus as the barium and S stars in the (P-e) diagram, only 33% (= 4/12) show a chemical signature of mass transfer in the form of s-process overabundances (from rather moderate -- about 0.3 dex -- to more extreme -- about 1 dex). These s-process-enriched cluster stars show a clear tendency to be in the clusters with the lowest metallicity in the sample, confirming the classical prediction that the s-process nucleosynthesis is more efficient at low metallicities (the only strong barium star in our sample is found in the cluster with the lowest metallicity, i.e., star 173 in NGC 2420, with [Fe/H] = -0.26). The s-process overabundance is not clearly correlated with the cluster turnoff (TO) mass (such a correlation would instead hint at the importance of the dilution factor). We find as well a mild barium star in NGC 2335, a cluster with a large TO mass of 4.3 Msun, which implies that intermediate-mass AGB stars still operate the s-process and the third dredge-up., Comment: Accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics; v.2 (language-edited)

Roughly half of the heavy elements (atomic mass greater than that of iron) are believed to be synthesized in the late evolutionary stages of stars with masses between 0.8 and 8 solar masses. Deep inside the star, nuclei (mainly iron) capture neutrons and progressively build up (through the slow-neutron-capture process, or s-process) heavier elements that are subsequently brought to the stellar surface by convection. Two neutron sources, activated at distinct temperatures, have been proposed: 13C and 22Ne, each releasing one neutron per alpha-particle (4He) captured. To explain the measured stellar abundances, stellar evolution models invoking the 13C neutron source (which operates at temperatures of about one hundred million kelvin) are favoured. Isotopic ratios in primitive meteorites, however, reflecting nucleosynthesis in the previous generations of stars that contributed material to the Solar System, point to higher temperatures (more than three hundred million kelvin), requiring at least a late activation of 22Ne. Here we report a determination of the s-process temperature directly in evolved low-mass giant stars, using zirconium and niobium abundances, independently of stellar evolution models. The derived temperature supports 13C as the s-process neutron source. The radioactive pair 93Zr-93Nb used to estimate the s-process temperature also provides, together with the pair 99Tc-99Ru, chronometric information on the time elapsed since the start of the s-process, which we determine to be one million to three million years., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures

We discuss the properties of H$\alpha$ emission stars across the sample of 22035 spectra from the Gaia-ESO Survey internal data release, observed with the GIRAFFE instrument and largely belonging to stars in young open clusters. Automated fits using two independent Gaussian profiles and a third component that accounts for the nebular emission allow us to discern distinct morphological types of H$\alpha$ line profiles with the introduction of a simplified classification scheme. All in all we find 3765 stars with intrinsic emission and sort their spectra into eight distinct morphological categories: single--component emission, emission blend, sharp emission peaks, double emission, P-Cygni, inverted P-Cygni, self--absorption, and emission in absorption. We have more than one observation for 1430 stars in our sample, thus allowing a quantitative discussion of the degree of variability of H$\alpha$ emission profiles, which is expected for young, active objects. We present a catalogue of stars with properties of their H$\alpha$ emission line profiles, morphological classification, analysis of variability with time and the supplementary information from the SIMBAD, VizieR, and ADS databases. The records in SIMBAD indicate the presence of H$\alpha$ emission for roughly 25% of all stars in our catalogue, while at least 305 of them have already been more thoroughly investigated according to the references in ADS. The most frequently identified morphological categories in our sample of spectra are emission blend (23%), emission in absorption (22%), and self--absorption (16%). Objects with repeated observations demonstrate that our classification into discrete categories is generally stable through time, but categories P-Cygni and self--absorption seem less stable, which is the consequence of discrete classification rules, as well as of the fundamental change in profile shape.

Context: Miras are long-period variables thought to be in the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase of evolution. In about one percent of known Miras, the pulsation period is changing. It has been speculated that this changing period is the consequence of a recent thermal pulse in these stars. Aims: We aim to clarify the evolutionary state of these stars, and to determine in particular whether or not they are in the thermally-pulsing (TP-)AGB phase. Methods: One important piece of information that has been neglected so far when determining the evolutionary state is the presence of the radio-active s-process element technetium (Tc). We obtained high-resolution, high signal-to-noise-ratio optical spectra of a dozen prominent Mira variables with changing pulsation period to search for this indicator of TPs and dredge-up. We also use the spectra to measure lithium (Li) abundances. Furthermore, we establish the evolutionary states of our sample stars by means of their present-day periods and luminosities. Results: Among the twelve sample stars observed in this programme, five were found to show absorption lines of Tc. BH Cru is found to be a carbon-star, its period increase in the past decades possibly having stopped by now. We report a possible switch in the pulsation mode of T UMi from Mira-like to semi-regular variability in the past two years. R Nor, on the other hand, is probably a fairly massive AGB star, which could be true for all meandering Miras. Finally, we assign RU Vul to the metal-poor thick disk with properties very similar to the short-period, metal-poor Miras. Conclusions: We conclude that there is no clear correlation between period change class and Tc presence. The stars that are most likely to have experienced a recent TP are BH Cru and R Hya, although their rates of period change are quite different., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in A&A

S-type stars are late-type giants whose atmosphere is enriched in carbon and s-process elements because of either extrinsic pollution by a binary companion or intrinsic nucleosynthesis and dredge-up on the thermally-pulsing AGB. A large grid of S-star model atmospheres has been computed covering the range 2700 < Teff < 4000 K with 0.5 < C/O < 0.99. ZrO and TiO band strength indices as well as VJHKL photometry are needed to disentangle Teff, C/O and [s/Fe]. A "best-model finding tool" was developed using a set of well-chosen indices and checked against photometry as well as low- and high-resolution spectroscopy. It is found that applying M-star model atmospheres (i.e., with a solar C/O ratio) to S stars can lead to errors on Teff up to 400K. During the evolution on the AGB, S-type stars are the first objects to experience s-process nucleosynthesis and third dredge-ups, and therefore to exhibit sprocess signatures in their atmospheres. Their significant mass loss rates (10^-7 to 10^-6 M*/year) make them major contributors to the AGB nucleosynthesis yields at solar metallicity. Precise abundance determinations in S stars are of the utmost importance for constraining e.g. the third dredge-up luminosity and efficiency (which has been only crudely parameterized in all current nucleosynthetic models so far). Here, dedicated S-star model atmospheres are used to determine precise abundances of key s-process elements, and to set constraints on nucleosynthesis and stellar evolution models. A special interest is paid to technetium, an element with no stable isotopes (99Tc, the only isotope produced by the s-process in AGB stars, has a half-life of 2.1 x 10^5 years). Its detection is considered as the best signature that the star effectively populates the thermally-pulsing AGB phase of evolution. The derived Tc/Zr abundances are compared, as a function of the derived [Zr/Fe] overabundances, with AGB stellar model predictions. The [Zr/Fe] overabundances are in good agreement with the model predictions, while the Tc/Zr abundances are slightly overpredicted. The HERMES high-resolution spectrograph project aims at exploiting the specific potential of small but flexible telescopes in observational astrophysics. The optimised optical design of the spectrograph is based on the well-proven concept of white-pupil beam folding for high-resolution spectroscopy. In this contribution we present the complete project, including the spectrograph design and procurement details, the telescope adaptor and calibration unit, the detector system, as well as the optimised data-reduction pipeline. We present a detailed performance analysis to show that the spectrograph performs as specified both in optical quality and in total efficiency. With a spectral resolution of 85000 (63000 for the low-resolution fibre), a spectral coverage from 377 to 900nm in a single exposure and a peak efficiency of 28%, HERMES proves to be an ideal instrument for building up time series of high-quality data of variable (stellar) phenomena., Comment: 13 pages
