Despite the widespread use of well-defined PdII complexes as pre-catalysts for cross-coupling processes, the role of the throw-away ligand is still underexplored. In this work we focused on the complexes of the type [Pd(NHC)(η3-R-allyl)Cl] (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) and we investigated the influence of the R substitution on the allyl moiety. Starting from the already described [Pd(IPr)(η3-cinnamyl)Cl] and [Pd(IPr*)(η3-cinnamyl)Cl] (IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene, IPr* = N,N′-1,3-bis[2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-methylphenyl]imidazol-2-ylidene) we prepared eight new complexes bearing new substitutions on the cinnamyl motif and we tested them in the C–N bond formation to evaluate the effect of the throw-away ligand modification in the catalytic activity. In addition, we studied the undesired formation of the less active off-cycle [Pd I2 (NHC)2(η3-R-allyl)(μ-Cl)] dimers from the corresponding PdII complexes to evaluate the role of the new throw-away ligands on the inhibition of this process. A synthetic protocol for the preparation of novel 3,4‐pyrrolidine‐fused β‐lactams was developed. The proposed 2,6‐diazabicyclo[3.2.0]heptan‐7‐one scaffolds were constructed through an amido group‐induced, potassium tert‐butoxide‐promoted intramolecular ring closure of 3‐acylamino‐4‐oxiranyl‐β‐lactams as the key reaction step. Alternatively, the desired cyclization was also effected by means of a scandium triflate‐mediated catalytic approach. In this way, a set of stereodefined 3,4‐pyrrolidine‐fused β‐lactams was synthesized, which were preliminary evaluated as β‐lactamase inhibitors. These first‐line biological assessments led to the identification of a 2‐benzoyl‐6‐(4‐methoxyphenyl)‐substituted diazabicyclo structure as an eligible starting point for further β‐lactamase inhibitor optimization studies. The intricate σ and π-bonding of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) to metals and the need to quantify their electronic properties to rationalize reactivity of complexes have resulted in the creation of numerous methodologies to understand the NHC–metal interaction which are, as we now show, flawed. Our search for a unified, easily accessible system to gauge these fundamental properties has resulted in the discovery of two systems that highlight the flaws present in existing systems and provide a more accurate measure of the NHC ligand electronic properties. This article explores the important, and yet often overlooked, solid-state structures of selected bioaromatic compounds commonly found in lignin hydrogenolysis oil, a renewable bio-oil that holds great promise to substitute fossil-based aromatic molecules in a wide range of chemical and material industrial applications. At first, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) was applied to the lignin model compounds, dihydroconiferyl alcohol, propyl guaiacol, and eugenol dimers, in order to elucidate the fundamental molecular interactions present in such small lignin-derived polyols. Then, considering the potential use of these lignin-derived molecules as building blocks for polymer applications, structural analysis was also performed for two chemically modified model compounds, i.e., the methylene-bridging propyl-guaiacol dimer and propyl guaiacol and eugenol glycidyl ethers, which can be used as precursors in phenolic and epoxy resins, respectively, thus providing additional information on how the molecular packing is altered following chemical modifications. In addition to the expected H-bonding interactions, other interactions such as π–π stacking and C–H∙∙∙π were observed. This resulted in unexpected trends in the tendencies towards the crystallization of lignin compounds. This was further explored with the aid of DSC analysis and CLP intermolecular energy calculations, where the relationship between the major interactions observed in all the SCXRD solid-state structures and their physico-chemical properties were evaluated alongside other non-crystallizable lignin model compounds. Beyond lignin model compounds, our findings could also provide important insights into the solid-state structure and the molecular organization of more complex lignin fragments, paving the way to the more efficient design of lignin-based materials with improved properties for industrial applications or improving downstream processing of lignin oils in biorefining processes, such as in enhancing the separation and isolation of specific bioaromatic compounds). A straightforward synthetic route to new N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC)‐gold‐steroidyl complexes is reported. The desired complexes were obtained using a weak base (such as K2CO3) through a concerted‐metallation‐deprotonation (CMD) reaction mechanism occurring between [Au(NHC)Cl] and ethisterone as a model steroid‐based alkyne. Most complexes displayed good cytotoxicity against a panel of cancer cell lines with IC50 values in the low micromolar range. Cellular uptake of the most active complex 2a into MCF‐7 breast cancer cells was facilitated by the coordinated ethisterone ligand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

N‐Heterocyclic carbene (NHC)‐derived selenoureas comprise a fundamentally important class of NHC derivatives, with key applications in coordination chemistry and the determination of NHC electronic properties. Considering the broad reactivity of chalcogen‐containing compounds, it is surprising to note that the use of NHC‐derived selenoureas as organic synthons remains essentially unexplored. The present contribution introduces a novel, straightforward transformation leading to azines bearing a guanidine moiety, through the reaction of a wide range of NHC‐derived selenoureas with commercially available diazo compounds, in the presence of triphenylphosphine. This transformation offers a new approach to such products, having biological, materials chemistry, and organic synthesis applications. The guanidine‐bearing azines are obtained in excellent yields, with all manipulations taking place in air. A reaction mechanism is proposed, based on both experimental mechanistic findings and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A one‐pot, multicomponent transesterification reaction between selenoureas, α‐diazoesters, alcohols, and triphenylphosphine was also developed, providing highly functionalized azines. The most efficient upconversion (UC) materials reported to date are based on fluoride hosts with low phonon energies, which reduce the amount of nonradiative transitions. In particular, NaYF4 doped with Yb3+ and Er3+ at appropriate ratios is known as one of the most efficient UC phosphors. However, its low thermal stability limits its use for certain applications. On the other hand, oxide hosts exhibit better thermal stability, yet they have higher phonon energies and are thus prone to lower UC efficiencies. As a result, developing host nanomaterials that combine the robustness of oxides with the high upconversion efficiencies of fluorides remains an intriguing prospect. Herein, we demonstrate the formation of ytrrium doped oxyfluoride (YOF:Yb3+,Er3+) particles, which are prepared by growing a NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ layer around SiO2 spherical particles and consecutively applying a high-temperature annealing step followed by the removal of SiO2 template. Our interest lies in employing these materials as Boltzmann type physiological range luminescence thermometers, but their weak green emission is a drawback. To overcome this issue, and engineer materials suitable for Boltzmann type thermometry, we have studied the effect of introducing different metal ion co-dopants (Gd3+, Li+ or Mn2+) into the YOF:Yb3+,Er3+ particles, focusing on the overall emission intensity, as well as the green to red ratio, upon 975 nm laser excitation. These materials are explored for their use as ratiometric thermometers, and further also as drug carriers, including their simultaneous use for these two applications. The investigation also includes examining their level of toxicity towards specific human cells – normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDFs) – to evaluate their potential use for biological applications. Carbene–metal–amide (CMA) complexes of gold, silver, and copper have been studied extensively for their photochemical/photocatalytic properties and as potential (pre-)catalysts in organic synthesis. Herein, the design, synthesis, and characterization of five bench-stable Au-, Ag-, and Cu-NHC complexes bearing the benzotriazolyl anion as an amide donor, are reported. All complexes are synthesized in a facile and straightforward manner, using mild conditions. The catalytic activity of the Ag and Cu complexes was studied in propargylamide cycloisomerization and carbonyl hydrosilylation reactions. Both CMA-catalyzed transformations proceed under mild conditions and are highly efficient for a range of propargylamides and carbonyl compounds, respectively, affording the desired corresponding products in good to excellent yields. A series of novel dinuclear NHC–gold–thiolato and –alkynyl complexes bearing aromatic linkers were successfully synthesized by an efficient and simple synthetic route. The catalytic activity of these complexes was tested in a lactonization reaction. The reaction proceeds in high efficiency, in short reaction time and under mild conditions, and is complementary to existing methods. In recent years, there has been significant focus on investigating and controlling chiral self‐assembly, specifically in the context of enantiomeric separation. This study explores the self‐assembly behavior of 4‐dodecyl‐3,6‐di(2‐pyridyl)pyridazine (DPP−C12) at the interface between heptanoic acid (HA) and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and multiscale molecular modeling. The self‐assembled monolayer structure formed by DPP−C12 is periodic in one direction, but aperiodic in the direction orthogonal to it. These structures resemble 1D disordered racemic compounds. Upon introducing palladium [Pd(II)] ions, complexing with DPP−C12, these 1D disordered racemic compounds spontaneously transform into 2D racemic conglomerates, which is rationalized with the assistance of force‐field simulations.
