Abstract

As the knowledge base and importance of mitochondrial physiology to human health expands, the necessity for harmonizing the terminologyconcerning mitochondrial respiratory states and rates has become increasingly apparent. Thechemiosmotic theoryestablishes the mechanism of energy transformationandcoupling in oxidative phosphorylation. Theunifying concept of the protonmotive force providestheframeworkfordeveloping a consistent theoretical foundation ofmitochondrial physiology and bioenergetics.We followguidelines of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry(IUPAC)onterminology inphysical chemistry, extended by considerationsofopen systems and thermodynamicsof irreversible processes.Theconcept-driven constructive terminology incorporates the meaning of each quantity and alignsconcepts and symbols withthe nomenclature of classicalbioenergetics. We endeavour to provide a balanced view ofmitochondrial respiratory control and a critical discussion on reporting data of mitochondrial respiration in terms of metabolic flows and fluxes.Uniform standards for evaluation of respiratory states and rates will ultimatelycontribute to reproducibility between laboratories and thussupport the development of databases of mitochondrial respiratory function in species, tissues, and cells.Clarity of concept and consistency of nomenclature facilitate effective transdisciplinary communication, education, and ultimately further discovery.

Abstract

An MOCVD-based atomic-layer epitaxy process is being developed as a potential solution to the problems of film-thickness and interface-abruptness control which are encountered when fabricating superconductor-insulator-superconductor devices using YBa2Cu3O(7-x). In initial studies, the atomic-layer MOCVD process yields superconducting YBa2Cu3O(7-x) films with substrate temperatures of 605 C during film growth, and no postdeposition anneal. The low temperature process yields a smooth film surface and can reduce interface degradation due to diffusion.

Abstract

The properties of p-AlGaN/GaN modulation doped superlattices (SLs) prepared by molecular beam epitaxy were studied by means of conductivity versus temperature, admittance spectroscopy, photoinduced current spectroscopy, microcathodoluminescence (MCL) spectra measurements, and measurements of effective diffusion lengths. It is shown that in SLs grown on GaN underlayers the sheet resistivity is about two orders of magnitude lower than for reference p-GaN films and the resistivity of SLs remains lower up to temperatures of about 350 °C. For SLs grown on AlGaN underlayers the gain in resistivity is much more moderate and certain advantages in using such SLs are envisaged only for temperatures below room temperature. The reason for this lower gain is a considerable decrease in hole mobility compared to p-GaN. The effect is somewhat tentatively attributed to worse crystalline perfection of these SLs. It is also shown that such SLs are characterized by a strongly broadened MCL peak and the presence of additional hole traps with activation energy of about 0.4 eV. Despite that, the photosensitivity and MCL intensity of these SLs are much better than for reference p-GaN samples. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Highly resistive molecular beam epitaxial GaN layers are characterized by temperature dependent conductivity and Hall effect measurements. Seven n-type GaN samples with room temperature layer resistivity ranging between 8 and 4.2x10(6) Omega cm are used in this study. The experimental data are analyzed by considering various transport models such as band and hopping conduction, scattering on charged dislocations and grain boundaries controlled transport. The same defect level of 0.23 eV, attributed to nitrogen vacancy, is found for layers with rho (300)less than or equal to3.7x10(3) Omega cm. The Hall mobility for two lower resistivity layers is influenced mainly by phonon scattering (mu (H)similar toT(x), x=-1.4). However, higher resistivity layers show positive mobility power, x=0.5-0.9, which can be explained by dominating scattering on charged dislocations. Abstract

Medium-chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency is a disorder of fatty acid catabolism, with autosomal recessive inheritance. The disease is characterized by episodic illness associated with potentially fatal hypoglycemia and has a relatively high frequency. A rapid and reliable method for the diagnosis of MCAD deficiency is highly desirable. Analysis of specific acylcarnitines was performed by isotope-dilution tandem mass spectrometry on plasma or whole blood samples from 62 patients with MCAD deficiency. Acylcarnitines were also analyzed in 42 unaffected relatives of patients with MCAD deficiency and in other groups of patients having elevated plasma C8 acylcarnitine, consisting of 32 receiving valproic acid, 9 receiving medium-chain triglyceride supplement, 4 having multiple acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency, and 8 others with various etiologies. Criteria for the unequivocal diagnosis of MCAD deficiency by acylcarnitine analysis are an elevated C8-acylcarnitine concentration (> 0.3 microM), a ratio of C8/C10 acylcarnitines of > 5, and lack of elevated species of chain length > C10. These criteria were not influenced by clinical state, carnitine treatment, or underlying genetic mutation, and no false-positive or false-negative results were obtained. The same criteria were also successfully applied to profiles from neonatal blood spots retrieved from the original Guthrie cards of eight patients. Diagnosis of MCAD deficiency can therefore be made reliably through the analysis of acylcarnitines in blood, including presymptomatic neonatal recognition. Tandem mass spectrometry is a convenient method for fast and accurate determination of all relevant acylcarnitine species.
