Abstract

We investigate in stationary regime on the linear plasma device OMT-2 the methods of plasma heating by electromagnetic waves, interaction of electromagnetic waves with magnetoactive plasma and plasma turbulence and transport processes in the trap. We use ultra-high frequency (UHF) contactless method to fill the open magnetic trap by plasma. We have proposed new method of open magnetic trap filling with plasma. Namely, plasma is injected in the trap along the magnetic field from independent stationary UHF source where plasma is formed in ECR regime. Abstract

Methods of plasma heating by electromagnetic waves, interaction of electro-magnetic waves with magnetoactive plasma, plasma turbulence and transport processes are investigated in the trap of the linear plasma device OMT2. Abstract

In the mostly pristine Congo Basin, agricultural land-use change has intensified in recent years. One potential and understudied consequence of this deforestation and conversion to agriculture is the mobilization and loss of organic matter from soils to rivers as dissolved organic matter. Here, we quantify and characterize dissolved organic matter sampled from 19 catchments of varying deforestation extent near Lake Kivu over a two-week period during the wet season. Dissolved organic carbon from deforested, agriculturally-dominated catchments was older (14C age: ~1.5kyr) and more biolabile than from pristine forest catchments. Ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry revealed that this aged organic matter from deforested catchments was energy-rich and chemodiverse, with higher proportions of nitrogen- and sulfur-containing formulae. Given the molecular composition and biolability, we suggest that organic matter from deforested landscapes is preferentially respired upon disturbance, resulting in elevated in-stream concentrations of carbon dioxide. We estimate that while deforestation reduces the overall flux of dissolved organic carbon by ~56%, it does not significantly change the yield of biolabile dissolved organic carbon. Ultimately, the exposure of deeper soil horizons through deforestation and agricultural expansion releases old, previously stable, and biolabile soil organic carbon into the modern carbon cycle via the aquatic pathway.

Abstract

Predictions of observable properties by density-functional theory calculations (DFT) are used increasingly often in experimental condensed-matter physics and materials engineering as data. These predictions are used to analyze recent measurements, or to plan future experiments. Increasingly more experimental scientists in these fields therefore face the natural question: what is the expected error for such an ab initio prediction? Information and experience about this question is scattered over two decades of literature. The present review aims to summarize and quantify this implicit knowledge. This leads to a practical protocol that allows any scientist - experimental or theoretical - to determine justifiable error estimates for many basic property predictions, without having to perform additional DFT calculations. A central role is played by a large and diverse test set of crystalline solids, containing all ground-state elemental crystals (except most lanthanides). For several properties of each crystal, the difference between DFT results and experimental values is assessed. We discuss trends in these deviations and review explanations suggested in the literature. A prerequisite for such an error analysis is that different implementations of the same first-principles formalism provide the same predictions. Therefore, the reproducibility of predictions across several mainstream methods and codes is discussed too. A quality factor Delta expresses the spread in predictions from two distinct DFT implementations by a single number. To compare the PAW method to the highly accurate APW+lo approach, a code assessment of VASP and GPAW with respect to WIEN2k yields Delta values of 1.9 and 3.3 meV/atom, respectively. These differences are an order of magnitude smaller than the typical difference with experiment, and therefore predictions by APW+lo and PAW are for practical purposes identical., Comment: 27 pages, 20 figures, supplementary material available (v5 contains updated supplementary material)

Abstract

In this paper we show how a two dimensional fluid model can be used to interpret data obtained from an inclined Mach-probe or a Gundestrup probe. We use an analytical approximation of the solution of the differential equations describing the relation between the plasma flow and the measured ion saturation currents at the probe's surface. The parameters of this analytical solution are determined by comparison with the exact numerical solution of the equations. Abstract

Understanding of the scrape-off layer (SOL) physics in tokamaks requires diagnostics with sufficient temporal and spatial resolution. This contribution describes results of experiments performed in the SOL of the CASTOR tokamak (R=40 cm, a = 6 cm) by means of a ring of 124 Langmuir probes surrounding the whole poloidal cross section. The individual probes measure either the ion saturation current of the floating potential with the spatial resolution up to 3 mm. Experiments are performed in a particular magnetic configuration, characterized by a long parallel connection length in the SOL, L_par ~q2piR. We report on measurements in discharges, where the edge electric field is modified by inserting a biased electrode into the edge plasma. In particular, a complex picture is observed, if the biased electrode is located inside the SOL. The poloidal distribution of the floating potential appears to be strongly non-uniform at biasing. The peaks of potential are observed at particular poloidal angles. This is interpreted as formation of a biased flux tube, which emanates from the electrode along the magnetic field lines and snakes q times around the torus. The resulting electric field in the SOL is 2-dimensional, having the radial as well as the poloidal component. It is demonstrated that the poloidal electric field E_pol convects the edge plasma radially due to the E_pol x B_T drift either inward or outward depending on its sign. 21. Reconstruction of Zeff profiles at TEXTOR through Bayasian source separation

Abstract

The understanding of the behaviour of impurities is a critical issue in tokamak physics. The ion effective charge Zeff provides a measure for impurity concentration. On the TEXTOR tokamak (Julich, Germany), we run a diagnostic to determine Zeff from the bremsstrahlung emissivity E. From radial profiles of E, electron density ne and temperature Te, profiles for Zeff can be reconstructed. However, their interpretation is difficult outside the plasma centre, because of various uncertainties in E, ne and Te at the edge, which render the radial matching of the different profiles problematic. Conversely, if it were possible to obtain a set of line-integrated values for Zeff directly from the line-integrated measurements of E, ne and Te, then these problems would be avoided. Now, recent advances in the field of statistical signal processing allow the extraction of an unknown signal from a signal mixture. In particular, we describe a procedure for the single-channel Bayesian source separation of a line-integrated Zeff signal from a line-integrated emissivity source, using as a forward model a linearized version of the known functional dependence of Zeff on E, ne and Te. Here, a line-integral over a traditionally obtained Zeff profile may serve as a prior for the line-integrated Zeff signal. Abstract

Dedicated experiments have been carried out at the TEXTOR tokamak in biasing-induced improved confinement regimes using Langmuir probe and GPI measurements. The results show the first evidence for the intimate interaction among sheared flows, eddy structures, Reynolds stress, zonal flows, and ambient fluctuations during a transition to an improved confinement. The sheared flows impose dynamic effects on turbulence structures, resulting in generation of Reynolds stress and zonal flows and eventually the suppression of background fluctuation levels via nonlinear energy transfer processes. The latter may therefore trigger a transition to the H mode. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract

It has been suggested that hypertrophy of the radial tuberosity may result in impingement leading to either a lesion of the distal biceps tendon or rotational impairment. Two previous studies on hypertrophy of the radial tuberosity had contradictory results and did not examine the distance between the radius and ulna: the radioulnar window. Therefore, this comparative cohort study aimed to investigate the radioulnar window in healthy subjects and compare it with that in subjects with either nontraumatic-onset rotational impairment of the forearm or nontraumatic-onset distal biceps tendon ruptures with rotational impairment of the forearm by use of dynamic 3-dimensional computed tomography measurements to attain a comprehensive understanding of the underlying etiology of distal biceps tendon ruptures. We hypothesized that a smaller radioulnar window would increase the risk of having a nontraumatic-onset distal biceps tendon rupture and/or rotational impairment compared with healthy individuals. This study measured the distance between the radius and ulna at the level of the radial tuberosity using entire-forearm computed tomography scans of 15 patients at the Amphia Hospital between 2019 and 2022. Measurements of healthy subjects were compared with those of subjects who had nontraumatic-onset rotational impairment of the forearm and subjects who had a nontraumatic-onset distal biceps tendon rupture with rotational impairment of the forearm. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used for individual comparisons, and the Mann-Whitney U test was used for group comparisons. A significant difference was found between the radioulnar window in the forearms of the subjects with a distal biceps tendon rupture (mean, 1.6 mm; standard deviation 0.2 mm) and the radioulnar window in the forearms of the healthy subjects (mean, 4.8 mm; standard deviation, 1.4 mm; P =.018). A trend toward smaller radioulnar windows in the rotational impairment groups was also observed, although it was not significant (P >.05). The radioulnar window in the forearms of the subjects with a distal biceps tendon rupture with rotational impairment was significantly smaller than that in the forearms of the healthy subjects. Therefore, patients with a smaller radioulnar window have a higher risk of rupturing the distal biceps tendon. Nontraumatic-onset rotational impairment of the forearm may also be caused by a similar mechanism. Future studies are needed to further evaluate these findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Polyethylene thickness does not influence aseptic revision rate with highly cross-linked liners in THA with 36-mm femoral heads

Abstract

Background: To reduce the risk of dislocation, larger head size can be used in total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, larger head size leads to thinner acetabular liners. With conventional polyethylene, thickness of >8 mm has been advocated to reduce stress and wear rate of the polyethylene. Modern polyethylene has become more wear-resistant. In this study, we investigated if the thickness of sequentially cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) liners is associated with failure of THA in the medium term.Patients and methods: 3654 THAs were included (2009–2016), in which THA was performed with a XLPE liner in combination with a 36-mm femoral head. Patient and surgical characteristics were collected. We compared implant survival of THA with thin liners (<7.9 mm) and thick liners (⩾7.9 mm) with a Kaplan Meier survival analysis at 5 years, median follow-up and 10 years of follow-up with and point aseptic loosening and performed a multivariate analysis to estimate hazard ratios (HR).Results: Median follow-up was 7.7 years (IQR 5.6–9.8). In total, 179 revision procedures were performed, where 82 revisions (46%) were performed for aseptic loosening. The survival rate at 5 years, median and 10 years of follow-up showed no statistically significant difference in implant survival. The survival rate at 10 years follow-up was for thin liners 97.1% (95% CI, 96.3–97.9) and for thick liners 98.2% (95% CI, 97.4–99.0) in the aseptic loosening group (chi-square 2.55; p= 0.11). The adjusted HR for thick liners (⩾7.9 mm) was 0.65 (95% CI, 0.38–1.08) compared with the thin liners (<7.9 mm), which was not significantly different.Conclusions: From this single-centre retrospective study it appears that thinner polyethylene liners are well tolerated when using second-generation highly cross-linked polyethylene. Thickness of the XLPE liners did not influence the risk of aseptic loosening of the implants in the medium term.

Abstract

Limited information is available on the fate of respiratory and arthropod-borne viruses in wastewater. Enteric viruses have been extensively studied in wastewater treatment plants, however partition coefficients have not been well documented. This information is essential for interpreting wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) data and optimizing sample collection and processing methods. In this study, we examined the solid–liquid partitioning behavior of dengue, West Nile, Zika, hepatitis A, influenza A, and SARS-CoV-2 viruses in wastewater. Samples were collected from the primary sludge line of eleven wastewater treatment plants across the United States and spiked with varying concentrations of each virus. Solid and liquid fractions were separated viacentrifugation. Viral nucleic acids were extracted and quantified using reverse-transcription digital droplet PCR (RT-ddPCR). Partition coefficients (KF), determined using the Freundlich adsorption model, ranged from 4.0 × 102mL g−1to 3.9 × 106mL g−1(median = 1.1 × 104mL g−1). We applied a multiple linear regression model to evaluate the effects of factors like viruses and wastewater treatment plants on virus partitioning. We found that the individual effects of those variables were not significant, however, their combined effect was significant. Specifically, significant differences were observed between KFfor Zika and West Nile virus between wastewater treatment plants. Further research is needed to understand how wastewater characteristics might impact the partition of viral markers. The results from this experiment underscore the importance of considering wastewater solids for the early detection and monitoring of viral infectious diseases, particularly in regions with low prevalence of infections.

30. Hydrology drives export and composition of carbon in a pristine tropical river

Abstract

The Ruki is a pristine blackwater tributary in the Congo Basin draining tropical lowland forest. Daily discharge and fortnightly concentrations, isotopic ratios, and molecular composition of carbon and organic matter were measured for 1 yr (2019–2020). Like the Congo River, discharge peaked from November–January, with a smaller secondary peak in June. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), inorganic carbon (DIC), carbon dioxide (pCO2), and methane (pCH4) concentrations were high (21.3 ± 4.8 mg C L−1, 5.8 ± 0.9 mg C L−1, 6370 ± 1740 ppm, and 250 ± 100 ppm, respectively) and positively correlated with discharge, indicating transport limitation. Total suspended solids and particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations were generally low (3.68 ± 1.61 mg L−1, 0.88 ± 0.33 mg C L−1, respectively) and varied inversely with discharge, indicating source limitation. The Ruki exported a total of 3.25 Tg C yr−1, of which DOC, DIC, and POC comprised 76%, 20%, and 3%, respectively. This DOC flux represents ~ 20% of the annual Congo Basin flux from about 5% of its area, highlighting the high yield. Isotopic ratios of DOC and POC indicate modern C3 forest vegetation as a source, except for a few older samples potentially indicating peat inputs. The bulk molecular composition of dissolved organic matter was seasonally consistent; however, a more oxidized and aromatic assemblage occurred at high discharge, corresponding with forest vegetation, while a more aliphatic, nitrogen‐, and sulfur‐enriched assemblage was found during low discharge, corresponding with soil‐derived organic matter. Overall, these results underscore how hydrology controls C concentrations in the Ruki River and how this blackwater river contributes disproportionately to C export per unit area within the Congo Basin hydrosystem.

32. Predictors of Trauma Symptomatology in Sexually Abused Adolescents: A 6-Month Follow-Up Study

Abstract

This study examines the natural course of trauma-specific symptoms 6 months after disclosure. Furthermore, this study investigates whether severity and type of abuse (intrafamilial or extrafamilial sexual abuse), negative appraisals, coping strategies, and crisis support measured at time of disclosure can be predictive of trauma symptoms 6 months later. Sixty-five sexually abused Flemish adolescents are reassessed 6 months after disclosure. Information from the participants is obtained through selfreport questionnaires. Forty-six percent of the adolescents report clinically significant trauma symptoms. Although internalizing symptoms significantly decreases after 6 months, externalizing symptoms persist. Type or severity of the abuse does not account for differences in symptomatology. Two predictors of ongoing trauma symptomatology are identified: postdisclosure trauma symptomatology and a lack of initial crisis support. Information on the victims' postdisclosure symptomatology as well as information on the initial received social support is critical in understanding which abused adolescents are most at risk for poor outcomes in the long term.

34. The Role of Social Support in Well-Being and Coping with Self-Reported Stressful Events in Adolescents

Abstract

Objective: This study investigated the role that social support plays in well-being and in coping after a stressful event in a group of non-clinical adolescents. Furthermore, this study aimed at replicating the finding that adolescents who reported sexual abuse reported more symptoms and less adequate coping strategies than adolescents who reported another type of stressful event or no stressful episode. Method: Eight hundred and twenty adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age filled out questionnaires assessing social support (Social Support Questionnaire, Sarason, Shearin, Pierce, & Sarason, 1987), trauma-related symptoms (Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children, Briere, 1996), behavior problems (Youth Self-Report, Achenbach, 1991), and coping (How I Cope Under Pressure Scale, Ayers, Sandler, West, & Roosa, 1996). Results: 42% of the adolescents reported a stressful experience, and 4.4% reported sexual abuse. Sexually abused adolescents reported more stress-related symptoms and used more avoidance and fewer support-seeking coping strategies than the other adolescents. The main-effect hypothesis of social support was sustained, but social support did not moderate the relation between a stressful event and coping. Yet, a trend was found suggesting that high support from the family was associated with less avoidance coping and more support-seeking in adolescents who reported a non-sexually abusive, stressful event. Conclusions: Our findings show that a highly perceived availability of social support is directly associated with fewer trauma-related symptoms, especially in adolescents who are non-sexually abused. For adolescents who reported a sexual or another type of stressful event, social support did not play a different role in coping. 35. A Social-Cognitive Model to Predict the Use of Assistive Devices for Mobility and Self-Care in Elderly People

Purpose: To provide insight into the contribution of psychological variables in understanding use and nonuse of assistive devices (ADs) for self-care and mobility. Design and Methods: A survey on a representative sample of 491 community-dwelling elderly people in Flanders was conducted. A theoretical model of the factors predicting the use of ADs was tested with path analysis. Results: The possession and use of 32 ADs were found to be bivariately related to intention to use ADs, awareness of ADs, attitude toward AD use, subjective norm regarding AD use, self-efficacy concerning AD use, and socio-demographic characteristics. In regression analyses the intention to use ADs was found to be related to self-efficacy concerning AD use, attitude toward AD use, and subjective norm regarding AD use. Implications: This study suggests that a social-cognitive model of human behavior can be helpful in explaining the use of ADs. The model can suggest measures to be developed aiming to improve the introduction of ADs.

Abstract

Sinds 30 juni 2020 is het toepassen van de chemische kiemremmer chloorprofam (CIPC) niet langer toegelaten in ons land. Brancheorganisatie Belpotato nam in 2020 initiatieven om het stopzetten van het gebruik mee in goede banen te leiden. Belpotato stelde een reinigingsprotocol voor loodsen ter beschikking van de sector, maar zocht ook mee naar een oplossing voor het uitrollen van een tijdelijke MRL. Daarnaast stond Belpotato in zeer nauw contact met Belgapom over het bemonsteringsplan voor de komende jaren. Ook stelde Belpotato een veiligheidsadvies voor verneveling op, als alternatief voor het gebruik van CIPC.

40. Knolcyperus in IPM en randvoorwaarden GLB

Abstract

Knolcyperus is een vaste plant die behoort tot de cypergrassenfamilie. De plant is een hardnekkig onkruid en kwam in de jaren 80 Vlaanderen binnen via akker- en tuinbouwbedrijven in Noord-Limburg en Antwerpen, tegen de Nederlandse grens. De jaren nadien verspreidde knolcyperus zich over heel Vlaanderen. Nadat het zijn quarantainestatus verloren heeft, iets wat onder de bevoegdheid van het FAVV valt, is de bestrijding van knolcyperus in 2016 opgenomen in de Vlaamse IPM-maatregelen van het Departement Landbouw en Visserij. Verschillende sectorvakgroepen binnen Boerenbond volgen dit van zeer nabij op.

Abstract

De verplichting tot geïntegreerde teelt (Integrated Pest Management of IPM) is het gevolg van de Europese richtlijn 2009/128 voor het duurzaam gebruik van pesticiden. Daaronder vallen zowel gewasbeschermingsmiddelen als biociden (bijvoorbeeld rattenvergif). De bedoeling is dat elke Europese burger daar op een verantwoorde manier mee omgaat en dat hij weet waar hij mee bezig is. Men wil de risico’s verbonden aan het gebruik van pesticiden minimaliseren door te streven naar een optimaal gebruik ervan.

Abstract

Study evaluates effectiveness of an anti-bullying program on peers' attitudes toward bullying and their attempts to solve conflicts. For secondary school students, positive attitudes were observed on post-test one, but effects disappeared by post-test two. For primary school students, smaller decline was noted on post-test two, showing a decline in seeking teacher's help and heightening of students' support for victims. (Author/JDM)

44. How Do Vaccination Intentions Change Over Time? The Role of Motivational Growth.

Abstract

Across nationwide rollout of COVID-19 vaccination, people in Belgium differed widely in their vaccination intention. In the present study, we examined (a) how people's vaccination intentions changed during the vaccination rollout and (b) whether changes in motivation (i.e., autonomous, controlled, and distrust-based (a)motivation) predicted changes in vaccination intention, thereby taking into account people's vaccination intention at baseline. Method: Using 4 subsamples of participants who were vaccinated at different time points (ntotal = 10,799) between December 2020 and June 2021; we used latent change modeling and latent growth curve modeling to examine the associations among initial levels and changes in vaccination motivation and vaccination intention. Results: Across subsamples, changes in vaccination intention were found to be qualified by changes in motivation. An increase in autonomous motivation was related to a positive shift in vaccination intention, while an increase in both controlled motivation and distrust-based amotivation was related to a negative shift in vaccination intention. Moreover, autonomous motivation predicted especially an increase in vaccination intention among those initially low in vaccination intention, whereas an increase in either controlled motivation or distrust-based amotivation especially predicted a decrease in vaccination intention among those initially high in vaccination intention. Conclusions: Findings suggest that a growing sense of ownership and a reduction in distrust is critical for individuals to develop a stronger intention to get vaccinated, particularly when people had initially low vaccination intentions. To examine sexuality education in Flanders, teachers and principals were surveyed at 400 secondary schools. Respondents had positive attitudes toward school-based sexuality education, but time devoted to it was too restricted. The teaching strategies were not effective enough to change attitudes and behaviors regarding contraception and AIDS prevention. (SM)
