The outflows of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are rich astrochemical laboratories, hosting different chemical regimes: from non-equilibrium chemistry close to the star, to dust formation further out, and finally photochemistry in the outer regions. Chemistry is crucial for understanding the driving mechanism and dynamics of the outflow, as it is the small-scale chemical process of dust formation that launches the large-scale stellar outflow. However, exactly how dust condenses from the gas phase and grows is still unknown: an astrochemical problem with consequences for stellar evolution. In this paper we provide a highly accurate value for the binding energy of benzene to proton-ordered crystalline water ice (XIh), as a model for interstellar ices. We compare our computed value to the latest experimental data available from temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments and find that our binding energy value agrees well with data obtained from binding to either crystalline or amorphous ice. Importantly, our new value is lower than that used in most astrochemical networks by about nearly half its value. We explore the impact of this revised binding energy value for both an AGB outflow and a protoplanetary disk. We find that the lower value of the binding energy predicted here compared with values used in the literature (4050 K versus 7587 K) leads to less depletion of gas-phase benzene in an AGB outflow, and leads to a shift outwards in the benzene snowline in the midplane of a protoplanetary disk. Using this new value, the AGB model predicts lower abundances of benzene in the solid phase throughout the outflow. The disk model also predicts a larger reservoir of gas-phase benzene in the inner disk, which is consistent with the recent detections of benzene for the first time in protoplanetary disks with JWST.

Observations of the outflows of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars continue to reveal their chemical and dynamical complexity. Spherical asymmetries, such as spirals and disks, are prevalent and thought to be caused by binary interaction with a (sub)stellar companion. Furthermore, high density outflows show evidence of dust-gas interactions. The classical chemical model of these outflows - a gas-phase only, spherically symmetric chemical kinetics model - is hence not appropriate for a majority of observed outflows. We have included several physical and chemical advancements step-by-step: a porous density distribution, dust-gas chemistry, and internal UV photons originating from a close-by stellar companion. Now, we combine these layers of complexity into the most chemically and physically advanced chemical kinetics model of AGB outflows to date. By varying over all model parameters, we obtain a holistic view of the outflow's composition and how it (inter)depends on the different complexities. A stellar companion has the largest influence, especially when combined with a porous outflow. We compile sets of gas-phase molecules that trace the importance of dust-gas chemistry and allow us to infer the presence of a companion and porosity of the outflow. In recent years, many questions have arisen regarding the chemistry of photochemical products in the carbon-rich winds of evolved stars. To address them, it is imperative to constrain the distributions of such species through high angular resolution interferometric observations covering multiple rotational transitions. We used archival ALMA observations to map rotational lines involving high energy levels of cyanoacetylene (HC$_3$N) toward the inner envelope (radius <8"/1000 AU) of the carbon star IRC+10216. The observed lines include the J=28-27, J=30-29, and J=38-37, transitions of HC$_3$N in its ground vibrational state. In contrast to previous observations of linear carbon chains toward this AGB star which show extended, hollow emission at 15"-20" radii (e.g. C$_4$H, C$_6$H, HC$_5$N), the maps of the HC$_3$N lines here show compact morphologies comprising various arcs and density enhancements, with significant emission from gas clumps at an angular distance of ~3" (350 AU) from the central AGB star. We compared visibility sampled non-LTE radiative transfer models with the observed brightness distributions, and derive a fractional abundance with respect to H$_2$ of $10^{-8}$ for HC$_3$N at the radii probed by these lines. These results are consistent with enhanced photochemistry occurring in warm (~200 K) regions of the circumstellar envelope. After application of a specialized chemical model for IRC+10216, we find evidence that the enhanced HC$_3$N abundances in the inner wind are most likely due to a solar-type binary companion initiating photochemistry in this region., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. Evolved low- to intermediate-mass stars are known to shed their gaseous envelope into a large, dusty, molecule-rich circumstellar nebula which typically develops a high degree of structural complexity. Most of the large-scale, spatially correlated structures in the nebula are thought to originate from the interaction of the stellar wind with a companion. As part of the Atomium large programme, we observed the M-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star R Hydrae with ALMA. The morphology of the inner wind of R Hya, which has a known companion at ~3500 au, was determined from maps of CO and SiO obtained at high angular resolution. A map of the CO emission reveals a multi-layered structure consisting of a large elliptical feature at an angular scale of ~10'' that is oriented along the north-south axis. The wind morphology within the elliptical feature is dominated by two hollow bubbles. The bubbles are on opposite sides of the AGB star and lie along an axis with a position angle of ~115 deg. Both bubbles are offset from the central star, and their appearance in the SiO channel maps indicates that they might be shock waves travelling through the AGB wind. An estimate of the dynamical age of the bubbles yields an age of the order of 100 yr, which is in agreement with the previously proposed elapsed time since the star last underwent a thermal pulse. When the CO and SiO emission is examined on subarcsecond angular scales, there is evidence for an inclined, differentially rotating equatorial density enhancement, strongly suggesting the presence of a second nearby companion. The position angle of the major axis of this disc is ~70 deg in the plane of the sky. We tentatively estimate that a lower limit on the mass of the nearby companion is ~0.65 Msol on the basis of the highest measured speeds in the disc and the location of its inner rim at ~6 au from the AGB star., Comment: 21 pages, 23 figures

The nebular circumstellar environments of cool evolved stars are known to harbour a rich morphological complexity of gaseous structures on different length scales. A large part of these density structures are thought to be brought about by the interaction of the stellar wind with a close companion. The S-type asymptotic giant branch star Pi1 Gruis, which has a known companion at ~440 au and is thought to harbour a second, closer-by (<10 au) companion, was observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array as part of the ATOMIUM Large programme. In this work, the brightest CO, SiO, and HCN molecular line transitions are analysed. The continuum map shows two maxima, separated by 0.04'' (6 au). The CO data unambiguously reveal that Pi1 Gru's circumstellar environment harbours an inclined, radially outflowing, equatorial density enhancement. It contains a spiral structure at an angle of 38+/-3 deg with the line-of-sight. The HCN emission in the inner wind reveals a clockwise spiral, with a dynamical crossing time of the spiral arms consistent with a companion at a distance of 0.04'' from the asymptotic giant branch star, which is in agreement with the position of the secondary continuum peak. The inner wind dynamics imply a large acceleration region, consistent with a beta-law power of ~6. The CO emission suggests that the spiral is approximately Archimedean within 5'', beyond which this trend breaks down as the succession of the spiral arms becomes less periodic. The SiO emission at scales smaller than 0.5'' exhibits signatures of gas in rotation, which is found to fit the expected behaviour of gas in the wind-companion interaction zone. An investigation of SiO maser emission reveals what could be a stream of gas accelerating from the surface of the AGB star to the companion. Rate coefficients have been measured for the reaction of CH radicals with formaldehyde, CH$_{2}$O, over the temperature range 31 - 133 K using a pulsed Laval nozzle apparatus combined with pulsed laser photolysis and laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The rate coefficients are very large and display a distinct decrease with decreasing temperature below 70 K, although classical collision rate theory fails to reproduce this temperature dependence. The measured rate coefficients have been parameterized and used as input for astrochemical models for both dark cloud and AGB stellar outflow scenarios. The models predict a distinct change (up to a factor of two) in the abundance of ketene, H$_{2}$CCO, which is the major expected molecular product of the CH + CH$_{2}$O reaction., Comment: 17 pages, 9 Figures, 5 Tables, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

A spectral scan of the circumstellar environment of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star R~Doradus was taken with ALMA in cycle 2 at frequencies between 335 and 362 GHz and with a spatial resolution of $\sim$150 milliarcseconds. Many molecular lines show a spatial offset between the blue and red shifted emission in the innermost regions of the wind. The position-velocity diagrams of this feature, in combination with previous SPHERE data and theoretical work point towards the presence of a compact differentially rotating disk, orientated nearly edge-on. We model the $^{\rm 28}$SiO ($v=1,~J=8\to7$) emission with a disk model. We estimate the disk mass and angular momentum to be $3 \times 10^{-6}$ Solar masses and $5 \times 10^{40}\ {\rm m^2 kg/s}$. The latter presents an `angular momentum problem' that may be solved by assuming that the disk is the result of wind-companion interactions with a companion of at least 2.5 earth masses, located at 6 AU, the tentatively determined location of the disk's inner rim. An isolated clump of emission is detected to the south-east with a velocity that is high compared to the previously determined terminal velocity of the wind. Its position and mean velocity suggest that it may be associated with a companion planet, located at the disk's inner rim., Comment: 11 pages, 7 Figures

We searched for extrasolar planets around pulsating stars by examining $\textit{Kepler}$ data for transit-like events hidden in the intrinsic variability. All Short Cadence observations for targets with 6000 K $< T_{\rm eff} <$ 8500 K were visually inspected for transit-like events following the removal of pulsational signals by sinusoidal fits. Clear transit-like events were detected in KIC 5613330 and KIC 8197761. KIC 5613330 is a confirmed exoplanet host (Kepler-635b), where the transit period determined here is consistent with the literature value. KIC 8197761 is a $\gamma$ Doradus - $\delta$ Scuti star exhibiting eclipses/transits occurring every 9.8686667(27) d, having durations of 8.37 h, and causing brightness drops $\frac{\Delta F}{F} = 0.00629(29)$. The star's pulsation spectrum contains several mode doublets and triplets, identified as $l = 1$, with a mean spacing of 0.001659(15) c/d, implying an internal rotation period of $301\pm3$ d. Trials to calculate the size of the light travel time effect (LTTE) from the pulsations to constrain the companion's mass ended inconclusive. Finding planets around $\gamma$ Doradus stars from the pulsational LTTE, therefore, is concluded to be unrealistic. Spectroscopic monitoring of KIC 8197761 revealed sinusoidal radial velocity variations with a semi-amplitude of $19.75 \pm 0.32$ km/s, while individual spectra present rotational broadening consistent with $v \sin i = 9\pm1$ km/s. This suggests that the stellar surface rotation is synchronized with the orbit, whereas the stellar core rotates $\sim$30 times slower. Combining the observed radial velocity variability with the transit photometry, constrains the companion's mass to be $\approx 0.28$ M$_{\odot}$, ruling out an exoplanet hypothesis., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
