Abstract

Luminescent multifunctional nanomaterials are important because of their potential impact on the development of key technologies such as smart luminescent sensors and solid-state lightings. To be technologically viable, the luminescent material needs to fulfil a number of requirements such as facile and cost-effective fabrication, a high quantum yield, structural robustness, and long-term material stability. To achieve these requirements, an eco-friendly and scalable synthesis of a highly photoluminescent, multistimuli responsive and electroluminescent silver-based metal-organic framework (Ag-MOF), termed "OX-2" was developed. Its exceptional photophysical and mechanically resilient properties that can be reversibly switched by temperature and pressure make this material stood out over other competing luminescent materials. The potential use of OX-2 MOF as a good electroluminescent material was tested by constructing a proof-of-concept MOF-LED (light emitting diode) device, further contributing to the rare examples of electroluminescent MOFs. Abstract

A new family of unsymmetrical boron chromophores chelated with two BF2 units, named BOPAM, has been developed via a one‐pot, three‐step reaction starting from commercially available thioamides via i) conversion to amidrazones, ii) condensation with pyrrole aldehydes, and iii) boron chelation. This synthetic pathway has been proven to be highly efficient, having a broad substrate tolerance and giving the BOPAM products high yield. Notably, some of the BOPAM dyes show interesting photophysical properties with fluorescence quantum yields up to 0.98 in toluene. A fine‐tuning of their emissive properties has been attained through tailored molecular design strategies guided by in‐depth computational investigations. Tailored substitution with electron‐donating groups at the BOPAM ring leads to the opening of a non‐radiative decay channel involving a dark state and consequently a significant quenching of the fluorescence. Abstract

In this paper we revisit the fluorescent properties of two fluorophores, namely N‐butyl‐7‐(4‐ methoxyphenyl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole‐4‐amine (1) and 4‐[[7‐(4‐methoxyphenyl)‐2,1,3‐ benzothiadiazole‐4‐yl]amino]‐benzonitrile (2), whose emissive and fluorescent sensing properties were recently investigated by Peng et al. in Ref. [1]. Experimentally, these two fluorophores were reported to show excitation wavelength‐dependent emission properties, especially 1, which is a dual emitter. The authors of the original manuscript ascribed the excitation‐wavelength‐dependent emission properties to an emission from a higher‐lying excited state (i. e. anti‐Kasha emission). Our investigations, including steady‐state spectroscopy, lifetime measurements and time‐dependent density functional theory and second‐order algebraic diagrammatic construction [ADC(2)] calculations, unambiguously highlight that the fluorophores do not violate Kasha's rule but reveal instead that a protonated species is responsible for the higher‐lying emissive band. In addition, we have elucidated the actual fluorescent pH sensing mechanisms. More and more molecular systems are reported to violate Kasha's rule; sometimes without compelling proof. This study highlights the need to i) exhaustively investigate apparent anomalous cases reported in the literature that seemingly violate Kasha's rule and ii) propose good scientific practices to correctly assign anomalous photochemical events. Abstract

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can provide a variety of nanocompartments for the confinement of guest molecules. Furthermore, the emissions of fluorescent molecules can be tuned by confinement. In this study, a solvent‐free "bottle‐around‐ship" method is used to encapsulate perylene and 9,10‐dimethylanthracene, two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, in the MOF ZIF‐8. Luminescence color tuning is achieved, including white‐light emission, when controlling the loading of only a single type of guest. Photophysical analysis suggests that the variations in luminescence result from various guest arrangements in the nanocompartments, as well as host–guest interactions. Because of the tight confinement of the guests, this host–guest system displays excellent luminescence thermal stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Nucleosides with a bi(hetero)aryl nucleobase have unique potential applications as antiviral drugs and molecular probes. The need for transition metal catalysis to synthesize these nucleosides from pre-functionalized building blocks and the use of nucleobase protection groups results in expensive and tedious syntheses. Herein we report that 5-imidazolyl-uracil can be obtained by scalable Van Leusen imidazole synthesis and regioselectively introduced on ribose to obtain the desired nucleoside in a 5 step synthesis (total yield 55 %). The 5-imidazolyl moiety leads to improved fluorescence properties. Abstract

Steady state and time-resolved fluorescence methods are used to study the photophysical properties of the fluorescent BODIPY-derived dye 3-{2-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]ethenyl}-4,4-difluoro-8-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,5,7-trimethyl-3a,4a-diaza-4-bora-s-indacene in several solvents. The value of the acidity constant of the ammonium form has indicated that the dye can be used as a pH indicator in the acidic pH range.

Abstract

Excitation localization in a nominally 3-fold-symmetric molecule is probed using electroabsorption spectroscopy in polymer and organic glass matrixes. The localization evident from the electroabsorption spectrum results from ground-state geometrical disorder in the branches that renders their excitation energies nonequivalent and reduces the overall symmetry of the molecule.

The off-time characteristics of single molecule fluorescence intensity traces are investigated for different cyanine dyes. The heavy atom substitution on the 1- and 1'-position led to an altered appearance of the off-time kinetics, which proved that the triplet state accounted for the off times.
