Abstract

Meer dan de helft van de verzuimende werknemers in Nederland is van mening dat het werk hoofdzakelijk of mede de oorzaak is van de lage rugklachten. Er bestaat een instrument waarmee de bedrijfs- en verzekeringsarts de mate van werkgerelateerdheid van aspecifieke lage rugklachten zo goed mogelijk kan inschatten. Dit gebeurt op basis van de leeftijd van de werknemer en de blootstelling aan tillen en dragen, buigen en/of draaien van de romp en lichaamstrillingen. Het instrument is gebaseerd op een meta-analyse van klinische studies en nationale en internationale expertbijeenkomsten en maakt deel uit van de beroepsziekteregistratierichtlijn voor aspecifieke lage rugklachten van het NCvB en van de NVAB-richtlijn ‘Handelen van de bedrijfsarts bij werknemers met rugklachten’. Doordat het instrument inzicht biedt in welke mate van blootstelling risicovol is voor deze klachten, is het ook nuttig als insteek voor de evaluatie van de werking van preventieve maatregelen.

Abstract

Background The prevention of occupational diseases is limited by a lack of insight into occupational exposure to risk. We developed a six-step approach to improve the diagnosis and reporting of occupational diseases and the selection of subsequent preventive actions by occupational physicians (OPs). Aims To evaluate the effect of the six-step approach on the transparency and quality of assessing occupational diseases and the usability of the six-step approach according to OPs and their satisfaction with it. Methods A randomized controlled trial. OPs in the control group used the standard information available. OPs in the intervention group used the six-step approach and accompanying educational materials. The actions and decisions of OPs in both groups were analysed using 17 performance indicators. To address the second issue, OPs used the six-step approach over 6 weeks and rated its usability and their satisfaction in relation to several aspects. Results The average score of the OPs in the intervention group (n = 110) was statistically significantly higher (11/17 performance indicators, 62% of the maximum score) than that of the OPs in the control group (n = 120, 5/17 performance indicators, 30% of the maximum score, P < 0.001). The usability aspects of the six-step approach had mean scores of 7 and 8. Mean satisfaction with the six-step approach was 8. Conclusions The six-step approach resulted in better evidence-based and transparent decision-making about occupational diseases by OPs. Abstract

The objective of this qualitative study was to assess whether a hypothesised sequential order of behavioural change phases would be fulfilled in different groups of stakeholders involved at the start of a process to implement ergonomic measures in bricklaying teams. The measures include trestles, bricklaying scaffolds, mast climbing work platforms and cranes. The behavioural change phases were: (1) being aware of measures, (2) understanding measures, (3) wanting measures, (4) intention to buy or hire measures, (5) ability to use measures, (6) using measures (experience), and (7) continuing to use measures. Structured interviews were conducted to examine the change phases in two groups of stakeholders (employers/work planners (n = 11) and foremen/bricklayers (n = 9) from nine companies) thought to be relevant in the decision to adopt and use the ergonomic measures. The results show that the fulfilled behavioural change phases differ between individual stakeholders, groups of stakeholders, companies and also between ergonomic measures. The hypothesised order of fulfilled consecutive behavioural change phases for individual stakeholders has not been confirmed by this study. The relationship between fulfilled and unfulfilled change phases by each stakeholder (group) and actual use of each ergonomic measure requires further study, so as to improve the selection of suitable implementation strategies. Abstract

The nature and feasibility of preventive measures taken to reduce work stress in the construction industry are discussed. Employers and employees in 18 construction companies were surveyed about feasible measures to reduce work stress. From the viewpoint of work stress, working with teams is the solution as it is an innovative measure. The measures include the use of older employees to act as coaches for younger personnel, and counseling and brief therapies.

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to determine the validity of methods to assess push/pull forces exerted in a construction task. Forces assessed using a hand-held digital force gauge were compared to those obtained using a highly accurate measuring frame. No significant differences were found between the methods, except for peak push forces, for which the forces assessed with the force gauge were significantly lower than those assessed with the measuring frame. When the construction task was reproduced close to the actual workplace by simulation against a fixed object using the force gauge, all exerted forces on the force gauge were significantly lower than those on the measuring frame, except for mean pull forces. When self-reports were compared to the exerted forces on the measuring frame, the construction workers overestimated the exerted push/pull forces by 50%. In conclusion, when applied for direct measurements, the force gauge can be used to validly assess push/pull forces at the workplace. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
