2. Physicochemical characterizations of functional hybrid liposomal nanocarriers formed using photo-sensitive lipids

Abstract

With recent advances in the field of diagnostics and theranostics, liposomal technology has secured a fortified position as a potential nanocarrier. Specifically, radiation/photo-sensitive liposomes containing photo-polymerizable cross-linking lipids are intriguing as they can impart the vesicles with highly interesting properties such as response to stimulus and improved shell stability. In this work, 1,2-bis(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DTPE) is used as a photo-polymerizable lipid to form functional hybrid-liposomes as it can form intermolecular cross-linking through the diacetylenic groups. Hybrid-liposomes were formulated using mixtures of DTPE and saturated lipids of different chain lengths (dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dimirystoilphosphatidylcholine (DMPC)) at different molar ratios. The physico-chemical characteristics of the liposomes has been studied before and after UV irradiation using a combination of techniques: DSC, QCM-D and solid-state NMR. Abstract

Current organic semiconductors for organic photovoltaics (OPV) have relative dielectric constants (relative permittivities, εr) in the range of 2-4. As a consequence, Coulombically bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) are produced upon absorption of light, giving rise to limited power conversion efficiencies. We introduce a strategy to enhance εr of well-known donors and acceptors without breaking conjugation, degrading charge carrier mobility or altering the transport gap. The ability of ethylene glycol (EG) repeating units to rapidly reorient their dipoles with the charge redistributions in the environment was proven via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Fullerene derivatives functionalized with triethylene glycol side chains were studied for the enhancement of εr together with poly( p-phenylene vinylene) and diketopyrrolopyrrole based polymers functionalized with similar side chains. The polymers showed a doubling of εr with respect to their reference polymers in identical backbone. Fullerene derivatives presented enhancements up to 6 compared with phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as the reference. Importantly, the applied modifications did not affect the mobility of electrons and holes and provided excellent solubility in common organic solvents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The influence of the interface of the dielectric SiO2 on the performance of bottom-contact, bottom-gate poly(3-alkylthiophene) (P3 AT) field-effect transistors (FETs) is investigated. In particular, the operation of transistors where the active polythiophene layer is directly spin-coated from chlorobenzene (CB) onto the bare SiO2 dielectric is compared to those where the active layer is first spin-coated then laminated via a wet transfer process such that the film/air interface of this film contacts the SiO2 surface. While an apparent alkyl side-chain length dependent mobility is observed for films directly spin-coated onto the SiO2 dielectric (with mobilities of ≈10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1 or less) for laminated films mobilities of 0.14 ± 0.03 cm2 V−1 s−1 independent of alkyl chain length are recorded. Surface-sensitive near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy measurements indicate a strong out-of-plane orientation of the polymer backbone at the original air/film interface while much lower average tilt angles of the polymer backbone are observed at the SiO2/film interface. A comparison with NEXAFS on crystalline P3 AT nanofibers, as well as molecular mechanics and electronic structure calculations on ideal P3 AT crystals suggest a close to crystalline polymer organization at the P3 AT/air interface of films from CB. These results emphasize the negative influence of wrongly oriented polymer on charge carrier mobility and highlight the potential of the polymer/air interface in achieving excellent 'out-of-plane' orientation and high FET mobilities. Abstract

Nine poly(arylene alkenylenes) with phenyl, thienyl and furanyl substituents on ethenylenic or butadienylenic links were synthesized: one via dehydrohalogenation, the others via Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reactions. For the latter approach five new diketones of type arylCOarylCOaryl and arylCOCHCHarylCHCHCOaryl were prepared. In addition 1,4-bis(2,2-diphenylethenyl)benzene (1a) and 1,4-bis[2-(p-tolyl)-2-phenylethenyl]benzene (2a) were made to serve as model compounds. All materials were characterized by NMR, IR and mass spectroscopy. The polymers are soluble in CHCl3, allowing the determination of the molecular weight distribution by GPC and the preparation of films. The latter were doped by iodine vapour to give d.c. conductivities of about 10-10 S cm-1 for the substituted ethenylenes and about 10-4 S cm-1 for the substituted butadienylenes. The results suggest large deviations from planarity in the ethenylenes, which is corroborated by the NMR behaviour of 1a. Complete shift assignments are given of 13C spectra of 1a and 2a, proving that 1a is conformationally homogeneous, but that 2a is synthesized as a statistical mixture of three configurations. © 1992., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

A series of precursor polymers towards poly(p-phenylene vinylene) is analyzed by different complementary NMR techniques. Resonance assignments were achieved by the use of one- and two-dimensional NMR techniques, such as 1H, 13C, APT, 2D-HETCOR, FLOCK, COSY and INADEQUATE. The series consists of the sulfinyl precursor poly[p-phenylene(1-butylsulfinyl)ethylene] and the derived sulfanyl (poly[p-phenylene(1-butylsulfanyl)ethylene] and sulfonyl derivative (poly[p-phenylene(1-butylsulfonyl)ethylene]). Chiral induction during polymerization of sulfinyl monomers was quantified by high resolution 13C NMR.

The complete assignment of the 1H and 13C NMR spectra of sulphinyl and sulphonyl monomers toward poly(p-phenylenevinylene) precursors is presented. For all compounds the same protocol could be used. Resonance assignments were achieved by the use of one- and two dimensional NMR techniques such as 1H, 13C APT and 2D HETCOR (J = 8 Hz, J = 140 Hz), INADEQUATE and COSY.
