The campo rupestre sensu lato is a vegetation type that occurs in South American mountains, supports a distinctive flora characterized by high rates of endemism, high herbaceous species richness and often-neglected but also species-rich of the arboreal stratum. We aimed to investigate how environmental factors and elevation are associated with the distribution and diversity of woody species in different rupestrian vegetation types across South America. Using a database of 2,049 woody species from 185 sites across four vegetation types within the campo rupestre, we assessed how the vegetation types were grouped according to their floristic composition and number of shared indicator species, as well as by using different beta diversity indices. The most important variables from a set of 27 variables (e.g. altitude, geo-edaphic and climatic) explaining species distribution were identified using redundancy analysis (RDA) and variation partitioning methods. The distribution of vegetation types was related to both environmental and spatial fractions, with a set of 17 variables retained (e.g. rockiness, grass cover and temperature seasonality as the most important variables). There was an association between the floristic composition of each vegetation type and the elevation range. Although the identified vegetation types are floristically related, they are distinguished by exclusive and habitat-specialist woody species. This uniqueness of vegetation types should be considered in terms of complementarity for the conservation of campos rupestres.

OCBIL theory aims to develop hypotheses that explain the evolutionary ecology of biota on old, climatically buffered, infertile landscapes (OCBILs). The table mountain OCBILs of the Guayana Highlands are a major centre of Neotropical plant diversity; however, knowledge about the underlying mechanisms of plant community assembly at the mountaintops is still limited. We evaluated the effect of a fine-scale geoenvironmental gradient on the phylogenetic metrics of plant communities on the iconic, highly isolated Roraima table mountain of the Guayana Highlands. We selected three specific geoenvironments: Bonnetia-shrubby rupestrian grassland, peaty rupestrian grassland and sandy rupestrian grassland. We evaluated evolutionary history using species richness and phylogenetic metrics and analysed effects of the soil on phylogenetic metrics using linear models. Of the 55 species surveyed, 40% are endemic to the Guayana Highlands. Bonnetia-shrubby rupestrian grassland showed higher species richness (47) than peaty rupestrian grassland (30) and sandy rupestrian grassland (24). We observed significant differences in phylogenetic diversity and structure among geoenvironments. The highest phylogenetic diversity was found for Bonnetia-shrubby rupestrian grassland and sandy rupestrian grassland. Peaty rupestrian grassland had significantly lower mean pairwise phylogenetic distance and all standardized phylogenetic metrics. The values of standardized phylogenetic metrics were close to zero, suggesting random phylogenetic structure. The linear models revealed that soil texture explained most of the variation in phylogenetic metrics. Our results might be related to the long geological history of tepuis and the accumulation of lineages over tens of millions of years, which supports the OCBIL theory.

AimWe used a phylogenetic approach to group assemblages of woody plant into major vegetation units in the Atlantic Forest, thus for the first time incorporating information on species evolutionary relationships into a bioregionalization of this critical hotspot. A phylogenetic regionalization will provide a spatially explicit framework for answering many basic and applied questions in biogeography, ecology and conservation.LocationAtlantic Forest.TaxonAngiospermsMethodsOur data set comprises 614 genera and 116 families, spread over 1,755 assemblages. To place assemblages in a multivariate evolutionary composition space, we used a phylogenetically informed ordination analysis, and to determine what the main phylogenetic groups of assemblages were, we used K‐means clustering based on phylogenetic dissimilarity of assemblages. To quantify how well environmental variables distinguish the phylogenetic groups found, we implemented classification tree approaches. Then, to explore the evolutionary turnover between the phylogenetic groups, we calculated phylogenetic beta diversity. Finally, we determined the lineages that are most strongly associated with individual phylogenetic groups using an indicator analysis for lineages.ResultsOur analyses suggest that there are seven principal groups, in terms of evolutionary lineage composition, in the Atlantic Forest. The greatest turnover of phylogenetic lineage composition separates tropical evergreen rain forest and semideciduous assemblages from subtropical and highland assemblages. The mixed subtropical forest showed the lowest phylogenetic compositional similarity values with other groups. Tropical rain forest had the highest number of significant indicator lineages, and the highest values of the indicator statistic for lineages.Main conclusionsWe found that the most pronounced evolutionary division separates southern and highland tree assemblages from those occurring under more tropical climates and at lower elevations. Our phylogenetic analyses point to an environmentally driven compositional division, likely based on the regular occurrence of freezing versus non‐freezing temperatures. Precipitation and edaphic regimes that assemblages experience had less definitive effects on their evolutionary lineage composition.

Second-growth forests (SGF) are critical components for limiting biodiversity loss and climate change mitigation. However, these forests were established after anthropic disturbances such as land use for planting, and in highly human-modified landscapes. These interventions can decrease the ability of biological communities to recover naturally, and it is necessary to understand how multiple drivers, from local scale to landscape scale influence the diversity and carbon stock of these forests in natural regeneration. For this, we used data from 37 SGF growing on areas previously used for eucalyptus plantations in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, after the last cut cycle. For each SGF, the forest tree species diversity was calculated based on the Hills number, and we also calculated the above-ground carbon stock. Then, we evaluated the influence of multiple environmental factors on these indexes: soil properties, past-management intensity, patch configuration, and landscape composition. Little influence of soil properties was found, only soil fertility negatively influenced above-ground carbon stock. However, past-management intensity negatively influenced tree species diversity and carbon stock. The isolation of other forests and tree species propagules source distance (500 ha) also negatively influenced the diversity of species. This is probably due to the favoring of tree pioneer species in highly human-modified landscapes because they are more tolerant of environmental changes, less dependent on animal dispersal, and have low carbon stock capacity. Thus, areas with higher past-management intensity and more isolated areas are less effective for passive restoration and may require intervention to recover tree diversity and carbon stock in the Atlantic Forest. The approach, which had not yet been applied in the Atlantic Forest, brought similar results to that found in other forests, and serves as a theoretical basis for choosing priority areas for passive restoration in the biome.

QUESTIONS: The growth–survival trade‐off is a central concept for the conflicting strategies of acquisitive species that grow quicker and conservative species that grow slower. Understanding which, and how, cross‐species functional traits contribute to the growth–survival trade‐off is a key topic for understanding the functioning of tropical forests. The present study aimed to: (a) determine if leaf traits, wood density and fruit size influence the growth–survival trade‐off at the community level; and (b) test the hypothesis that averaged leaf traits, averaged wood density and averaged fruit size among all trees of subplots explain tree height in a 50‐ha plot of secondary Atlantic Forest in Brazil. METHODS: All trees with DBH > 3 cm had their heights estimated and were taxonomically identified. The functional traits used were leaf length (LL), leaf width (LW), petiole length (PL), petiole width (PW), leaf width/petiole width (LW/PW), leaf length × leaf width (LL*LW), wood density (WD), fruit length (FL) and fruit width (FW). RESULTS: A total of 74,335 trees of 178 species were recorded in 5,076 subplots of 100 m². Associations between functional traits and mean height (Hₘₑₐₙ) and height mode (Hₘₒdₑ) were congruent with expected trends of LW, LL, LW/PW, WD and FW with the top‐ranked global model explaining most of the found variance suggesting that Hₘₑₐₙ and Hₘₒdₑ are the best averaged response variables. The growth response represented by Hₘₑₐₙ and Hₘₒdₑ had the most distinctive, congruent and consistent association with LW/PW, WD and FW. CONCLUSIONS: Higher LW and higher LW/PW indicated higher dependence of leaf blade on local microclimatic conditions, and lower dependence on petiole support for plant growth, which is beneficial for the acquisitive strategy. Smaller fruits and higher WD were also associated with the acquisitive strategy. Therefore, LW, LW/PW, WD and FW influenced the growth–survival trade‐off at the community level and explained tree height variation in the studied tropical forest.

Understanding how environmental drivers induce changes in plant composition and diversity across evolutionary time can provide important insights into the mechanisms of community assembly. We evaluated how taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity and structure of plant communities change along a local-scale edaphic and topographic gradient in the Tepequém table mountain, Brazilian Amazon. We selected three phytophysiognomies along the altitudinal gradient: Open Rupestrian Grassland, Shrubby Rupestrian Grassland, and Forest. We compared community composition and taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity between phytophysiognomies, and we tested regression linear effect models to investigate the effect of altitude and soil properties on taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity. The highest species richness and phylogenetic diversity were found at lower elevation for Forest. Mean pairwise phylogenetic distance, mean nearest taxon phylogenetic distance, and all standardised phylogenetic metrics were significantly lower in Shrubby Rupestrian Grassland. This phytophysiognomy showed phylogenetic clustering. Forest showed a cluster pattern when only terminal nodes are considered and random dispersion to deep phylogenetic nodes. Open Rupestrian Grassland also showed random phylogenetic structure. The regression analyses showed that species richness and different phylogenetic diversity metrics were explained by altitude and soil properties. However, standardised metrics were not explained by these environmental variables. Comprehensive studies including the role of environmental drivers in plant evolutionary history along the altitudinal gradient are necessary for explaining community assembly patterns and provide additional information for conservation planning.

Background Tropical forests hold high biodiversity, which challenges the selection of species for forest restoration. For a site-specific restoration is required the understanding of the main influences ruling the assemblages. We aimed to answer three questions. 1) how do environmental variables influence taxonomic, phylogenetic diversities, and the phylogenetic structure in the of Rio Doce Basin (TFRD)? 2) How do environmental variables, phylogenetic structure and the main types of seed dispersal relate to each other? 3) Which information of the TFRD assemblages can be used for ecological restoration and conservation in global change scenario? We used 78 sites with their checklists to calculate taxonomic, and phylogenetic diversities, phylogenetic structures, and dispersal proportions. Then, we related the diversities of the sites to their bioclimatic variables and built GLM models.Results Species richness was influenced negatively by water excess duration, by water deficit duration, and positively by maximum temperature, and temperature seasonality. Water regime drives diversity and phylogenetic community structure in the TFRD more than other variables. Annual precipitation and maximum temperature presented the clearer influences on diversity and phylogenetic structure. Zoochory was positively, and anemochory, autochory were negatively related to sesMPD. Conclusions By choosing the lineages with high fitness for each site, the functioning and the stability of ecosystems should increase. The addition of species with anemochory and autochory increases functional and phylogenetic diversity in areas with extreme water excess or water deficit, important in a global change scenario. A high proportion of zoochory allows the communities to function conserving dispersers, biodiversity, and services.

The probability that a propagule reaches a certain location where it can establish and persist is affected by the distance from the source. Fragmented landscapes often promote the isolation of habitats that hinder or impede the movement of species that affect their range distribution, even when environmental conditions are adequate. Studies that assess the connectivity of the landscape are essential to ensure that ecological conservation planning covers all vital processes that occur on a landscape scale. Based on the classification of land cover in the Rio Doce Basin - RDB, we used a habitat / non-habitat approach to assess RDB connectivity for tree species. Based on circuit theory, we built 6 surface models of resistance based on habitat and non-habitat areas. We performed the analysis using the GIS plug-in and Linkage Mapper to generate lest cost path maps. The RDB is very fragmented, but still has functionally connected regions. The west to nothwestern and southeastern portions of the basin are well-connected and demand conservation practices, while the center-north of the basin and the far southwest are regions with greater resistance to connectivity as a result of strong anthropic pressures that reduce forests, requiring intervention through restoration projects avoiding loss due to lack of connectivity. In addition, land reclamation projects in degraded areas must also be organized in the Linhares region, as it is inserted in a region of very high biodiversity with a high level of endemism and a high number of threatened species.

The campo rupestre sensu lato is among the most species-rich vegetation in the world, harbouring a high proportion of endemic species. We aimed to identify the processes that could generate a high level of phylogenetic diversity (PD) in campo rupestre for woody species and point out biodiversity hotspot areas which may provide additional information for conservation planning. We compiled a database of 2049 woody species from 185 community inventories. We calculated the evolutionary history using species richness (SR), PD, mean pairwise phylogenetic distance between species (MPD), the mean nearest taxon distance (MNTD) and their equivalents standardised (ses.PDss, ses.MPD, ses.MNTD), evolutionary distinctiveness (ED), and biogeographically weighted evolutionary distinctiveness (BED). Cloud dwarf-forests had the highest SR, PD, MPD and ses.MPD and lowest MNTD, while rupestrian cerrado presented the highest ses.PD and ses.MNTD. All areas are important for conservation, but the intersections between the hotspots should receive special attention in future conservation actions. The grids identified as hotspots by three or more metrics were localized mainly in Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais State and a further expansion of protected areas is required. Moreover, the intersections between the hotspots obtained by mean ED and ses.PD are concentrated in the rocky dwarf forest and rupestrian cerrado, with considerable conservation gaps. The degree of protection of campo rupestre was low with unprotected areas comprising 56% of the species. Our results show an urgent need for increasing protected areas of campo rupestre in order to avoid the loss of valuable, endemic species with unique evolutionary history.

The Paraguayan territory and region, in the centre of South America, is a huge transition area with a succession of various vegetation types. However, this area has received little attention from researchers, with few works published on its flora and its delimitations. We aimed to identify the most important environmental driving forces and delimit floristic patterns in this region, since understanding the forces that drive floristic variations in this ecotonal region could help comprehend the distribution of vegetation not only in this region but throughout South America. We obtained 1234 tree species occurrence records, 205 geographic coordinates and 23 environmental variables and altitude from the ‘NeoTropTree’ database and verified the influence and contribution of environmental factors through variance partition. We tested the floristic consistency of the different vegetation types using dendrogram, indicator species and ordination analyses. We also constructed multiple linear models to check the correlation between species distribution and environmental variables. We found eight consistent vegetation types. The spatial variables coupled with environmental variables were more important than individual environmental or spatial variables. Among the environmental variables, the aridity index was the most important. Despite the importance of spatial factors, due to environmental heterogeneity, we found a gradient related to climate and edaphic variables related to tree flora. The results confirm that the Paraguayan territory and region can be considered to be a diversified and important ecotone area in South America with respect to tree flora.

The growth-survival trade-off hypothesis states that functional traits of stem, wood, leaves and fruits govern acquisitive and conservative strategies of plant species that grow/survive differently in forests. We aimed to determine whether heterogeneity during the colonization of a secondary Atlantic Forest fragment causes differences in colonization-related traits and determines taxonomic composition of subplots. A total of 5,078 subplots were censused with leaf and fruit traits and height measurements being determined for each tree of each species, and with averaged-abundance-weighted values calculated for each subplot. A dendrogram was generated from the taxonomic composition of subplots using Sorensen similarity and UPGMA clustering. A total of 74,335 trees of 178 species were recorded. Clustering revealed five main groups of subplots that were tested against each other and found to differ in terms of average leaf width, leaf-width/petiole-width, wood density, mean height, height mode, fruit width and fruit length. Greater leaf averages in subplots were associated with greater fruit averages, and with higher wood densities and greater heights among groups of subplots, revealing that heterogeneity during colonization directed the communities of the 50-ha plot. The averaged values of functional traits detected subplots associated with conditions favorable to colonization, thereby reinforcing the growth-survival trade-off hypothesis.

Based on the classification of the landcover of the Rio Doce Basin - RDB and on the circuit theory, we used a habitat / non-habitat approach to assess the connectivity of the RDB to tree species. We built six resistance surface models based on habitat and non-habitat areas, using the GIS plug-in and Linkage Mapper to generate least cost paths maps. Three models explained the Jaccard similarity index matrix of 78 fragments used as a proxy of connectivity to test the models by GLMs, and one out the three was the simplest and most parsimonious. The map generated by the chosen model showed that the RDB is very fragmented but still has well-connected regions. The west to northwestern and southeastern portions of the RDB are well-connected and demand conservation of remaining fragments as well as the creation of reserves, while the center-north, east, and the far southwest of the basin are regions with greater resistance to connectivity as a result of anthropic pressures that reduced and fragmented the forests, requiring intervention through restoration projects to re-establish landscape connectivity.

In South America the biogeographic history has produced different biomes with different vegetation types and distinct floras. As these vegetation types may diverge in evolutionary histories, we analysed how alpha and beta phylogenetic diversity vary across them and determine the main drivers of variation in phylogenetic diversity. To this end, we compiled a list of 205 sites and 1222 tree species spread over four biomes and eight vegetation types in central South America. For each site we evaluated six measures of evolutionary alpha diversity (species richness, phylogenetic diversity sensu stricto and the standardized effect size of phylogenetic diversity, mean phylogenetic distance and mean nearest taxon distance) and beta diversity (phylogenetic Sorensen's similarity). We checked the influence of spatial and environmental variables using generalized least squares models. The greatest phylogenetic differentiation was found between west and east of central South America, mainly between the Chaco communities and the other vegetation types, suggesting that species found in this biome come from different lineages, comparing with the others vegetation types. Our results also showed a clustered phylogenetic structure for the Dry Chaco woodlands, which may be associated with harsh environmental conditions. In addition to historical process, climatic conditions are the main drivers shaping phylogenetic patterns among the distinct vegetation types. Understanding patterns of phylogenetic diversity and distribution can greatly improve conservation planning and management since it allows the conservation of unique biome characteristics.

1.The Cerrado Domain of central Brazil houses the largest extent of savanna in the Neotropics, but despite its simple characterisation as a giant savanna, it contains considerable vegetation heterogeneity that is poorly understood.2.We aimed to determine how vegetation types in the Cerrado diverge in their tree species composition and what role ecological factors play in driving compositional patterns.3.We used a dataset of 1,165 tree species inventories spread across the Cerrado Domain, which come from six vegetation types that have a substantial arboreal component: woody savannas, dystrophic cerradão, mesotrophic cerradão, seasonally dry tropical forests, semideciduous forests and evergreen forests. We found three extremes in terms of tree species composition, with clear underlying ecological drivers, which leads us to propose a ternary model, the ‘Cerrado Vegetation Triangle’, to characterize woody vegetation in the Cerrado. At one extreme, we found that semideciduous and evergreen forests are indistinguishable floristically and are found in areas with high water availability. At another extreme lie seasonally dry tropical forests which are found on more fertile soils. At the third extreme, we found that all types of savanna, and dystrophic cerradão, are highly similar in tree species composition and are commonly found in areas of poor soils and high flammability. Mesotrophic cerradão is transitional in tree species composition between savannas and seasonally dry tropical forest.4.The lack of variation in tree species composition attributed to climatic variables indicates that within homogeneous macroclimatic zones, many types of forest and savanna co‐exist due to complex mosaics of local substrate heterogeneity and fire history.5.Synthesis. Our findings highlight the complexity of forest‐savanna transitions in the Cerrado Domain, with relevance for understanding the future of Cerrado vegetation under environmental change. If nitrogen deposition is extensive, some savannas may be more likely to transition to mesotrophic cerradão or even seasonally dry tropical forest whereas if water availability increases these same savannas may transition to semideciduous or evergreen forest. Our ‘Cerrado Vegetation Triangle’ model offers a simple conceptual tool to frame discussions of conservation and management.

Aims We use dendroecological methods to test the hypothesis that variation in topographic position is related to radial growth and phenology for individuals of the endangered tropical tree Dalbergia nigra under uniform conditions of climate and irradiance, and to examine effects of seasonality on plant phenology and growth periodicity.

In order to develop niche models for tree species characteristic of thecerrado vegetation (woody savannas) of central South America, and tohindcast their distributions during the Last Glacial Maximum and Last Inter-Glacial, we compiled a dataset of tree species checklists for typical cerradovegetation (n=282) and other geographically co-occurring vegetationtypes, e.g. seasonally dry tropical forest (n=355). We then performed anIndicator Species Analysis to select ten species that best characterizetypical cerrado vegetation and developed niche models for them using theMaxent algorithm. We used these models to assess the probability ofoccurrence of each species across South America at the following timeslices: Current (0 ka pre-industrial), Holocene (6 ka BP), Last GlacialMaximum (LGM - 21 ka BP), and Last Interglacial (LIG - 130 ka BP). Theniche models were robust for all species and showed the highest probabilityof occurrence in the core area of the Cerrado Domain. The palaeomodelssuggested changes in the distributions of cerrado tree species throughoutthe Quaternary, with expansion during the LIG into the adjacentAmazonian and Atlantic moist forests, as well as connections with otherSouth American savannas. The LGM models suggested a retraction ofcerrado vegetation to inter-tableland depressions and slopes of the CentralBrazilian Highlands. Contrary to previous hypotheses, such as thePleistocene Refuge Theory, we found that the widest expansion of cerradotree species seems to have occurred during the LIG, most probably due toits warmer climate. On the other hand, the postulated retractions duringthe LGM were likely related to both decreased precipitation andtemperature. These results are congruent with palynological andphylogeographic studies in the Cerrado Domain.

Produz madeira valiosa, mas este recurso foi altamente explorado que é a causa da classificação como vulnerável. Neste estudo, foi investigado os mecanismos que determinam a abundância, distribuição e crescimento de uma população de D. nigra em um fragmento da Mata Atlântica. No primeiro capítulo, usamos métodos dendroecologia para testar a hipótese de que a variação na posição topográfica, estaria relacionada com o crescimento radial de Dalbergia nigra em condições uniformes de clima e irradiância. O alto teor de alumínio, baixa fertilidade e umidade do solo presente na parte alta do fragmento ocasionou menor crescimento de árvores de D. nigra. No segundo capítulo, determinamos se a topografia e a variação em fina escala de disponibilidade de recursos podem resultar em diferentes taxas de mortalidade e de crescimento em plântulas de D. nigra. A topografia influenciou a taxa de sobrevivência e crescimento de plântulas e de indivíduos jovens de D. nigra, com maior crescimento e recrutamento na parte baixa do fragmento. Além disso, a taxa de sobrevivência e crescimento de plântulas foram menores na estação seca do que na estação chuvosa. Assim, a sensibilidade à seca sazonal na fase de plântulas pode ser fortemente dependente da umidade local. No capítulo 3, examinamos se há variação no incremento radial de D. nigra entre diferentes classes de diâmetro e como a densidade da madeira varia em relação a fatores abióticos como fertilidade e umidade do solo. Precipitação foi a variável medida mais forte implicados no crescimento de D. nigra, independentemente do tamanho da classe. Os fatores edáficos também foram determinantes no crescimento e na densidade da madeira de D. nigra. O efeito da heterogeneidade de fatores abióticos em um pequeno fragmento de Mata Atlântica ofereceu condições distintas que resultaram em maior ou menor sucesso no recrutamento e crescimento dos indivíduos de D. nigra de acordo com sua distribuição no mosaico de recursos. Spatio-temporal variation in soil resource availability associated with topography and seasonality may drive patterns of tree growth and phenology, but these links are poorly characterized for most tropical tree species. We use dendroecological methods to test the hypothesis that variation in topographic position is related to radial growth and phenology for individuals of the endangered tropical tree Dalbergia nigra under uniform conditions of climate and irradiance, and to examine effects of seasonality on plant phenology and growth periodicity. Dendrometer-based measurements of stem diameter change over 26 months and local measurements of soil nutrient and water availability were compared for 24 individuals of D. nigra distributed equally between summit and valley positions within a topographically heterogeneous fragment of Atlantic rain forest in southeast Brazil. Soil water and nutrient availability, and cumulative radial growth, were greater for trees in valley than summit positions. Monthly diameter increment was seasonal and positively related to monthly rainfall. D. nigra was seasonal in all phenophases, regardless of topographic position, and there were no differences in the frequency, timing or intensity of phenophases among topographic positions. We conclude that low soil nutrient and/or moisture availability reduce radial growth of D. nigra individuals growing in summit positions, while trees growing in valleys exhibit faster annual growth, but that vegetative or reproductive phenology are unaffected by fine-scale variation in topography.

Large areas in the Pantanal wetland are covered by monodominant formations, e.g. typical landscapes with local names such as “paratudal”, dominated by T. aurea. Studies on structure of these formations generally include only woody strata, consequently the species richness registered is usually low due to the absence of the ‘ground layer’ of herbaceous and others low species. We recorded 13 species, 12 genera and 11 families for the arboreal stratum. Considering arboreal flora without the dominant (T. aurea) individuals showed great establishment in relation to the flood level between 35 – 45 cm while the individuals of the dominant species of 30 – 45 cm. The diameter distribution revealed that the population of T. aurea did not show the reverse J curve, the usual pattern for species in constant regeneration, also evidenced in inconstant Licourt quotient, indicating an episodic recruitment that could lead to future changes in structure. In the herbaceous strata we recorded 78 species, included in 62 genera and 27 families. Using plots method we sampled 46 species, 40 genera and 22 families, while in line interception we found 65 species distributed in 57 genera and 26 families. The floristic similarity of Sørensen between both methods was 59.4%, with 33 species in common, and the method of line interception was more efficient in detecting richness, with 35% more species found in the same time. According to the methods of plots and line interception applied on the woody stratum, our results gave similar detailed information on the structure of this type of savanna, and in spite of being monodominant it shows high species richness when the herbaceous stratum is taken into account. Plots and line interception methods showed similar results for the woody stratum and high species richness of the herbaceous stratum. Amplas áreas no Pantanal são cobertas por formações monodominantes, tipicamente com nomes locais como “paratudal” dominado por Tabebuia aurea. Estudos na estrutura dessas formações geralmente incluem somente estrato arbóreo, consequentemente, a riqueza de espécies detectada geralmente é baixa devido à ausência do “estrato terrestre” das herbáceas e outras poucas espécies. Nós registramos 13 espécies, 12 gêneros e 11 famílias para o estrato arbóreo. Considerando a flora arbórea sem a espécie dominante (T. aurea) apresentaram um ótimo de estabelecimento em relação ao nível de inundação entre 35 – 45cm, enquanto os indíviduos da espécie dominante de 30 – 45cm. A distribuição diamétrica revelou que a população de T. aurea não apresentou o J reverso, o modelo usual para espécies em constante regeneração, também evidenciado pela não constante no quoeficiente de Licourt. Indicando episódio de recrutamento que poderia levar a futuras mudanças na estrutura. Para o estrato herbáceo geral registramos 78 espécies, incluindo 68 gêneros e 27 famílias. Usando o método de parcelas amostramos 46 espécies, 40 gêneros e 22 famílias, enquanto na interseção na linha nós encontramos 65 espécies distribuídas em 57 gêneros e 26 famílias. A similaridade florísitca de Sørensen entre ambos métodos foi de 59,4%, com 33 espécies em comum, e o método de interseção na linha foi mais eficiente na detecção da riqueza, 35% das espécies foram encontradas no mesmo tempo. De acordo com os métodos de parcelas e interseção na linha aplicado no estrato arbóreo, os nossos resultados deram uma semelhante informação detalhada na estrutura deste tipo de savana, e que apesar de ser monodominante mostrou alta riqueza de espécies quando o estrato herbáceo é levado em conta.
