Natural forest regrowth is considered the most cost-effective strategy to promote large-scale forest restoration, but regrowth trajectories and their consequences for nature and people can be highly variable. This uncertainty may obstruct devoting land, time and resources in promoting this restoration approach. Process-based models allow to simulate forest regrowth under different scenarios and may thus support decision making to manage areas in ways that maximize forest restoration based on natural forest regrowth. In the present study, we used the process-based model LandClim to assess the following questions:1) How does land use intensity affect forest growth, aboveground biomass (AGB) and tree species diversity in agricultural landscapes in the long term? 2) How do different land use configurations affect the structure and expansion of second-growth forests? We based our study on six 4 × 4 km agricultural landscapes, dominated by pastures and sugarcane, in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest region. We parameterized and validated LandClim for the study region by comparing model outputs with published estimates and information from field data collected across the six landscapes. We then simulated natural forest regrowth under different land use intensities in the six landscapes and analyzed how land use intensity and landscape configuration affect AGB, tree species diversity and the spatial dynamics of second-growth forests. Our results showed negative effects of increased land use intensity on landscape biomass accumulation due to limited forest cover expansion. Landscapes dominated by sugarcane had lower forest regrowth potential than pasture-dominated landscapes due to lower likelihood of abandonment, and limited rates of seed availability and seedling growth. Land use intensity and landscape configuration were also important factors for tree diversity changes. However, temporal patterns differed, and while AGB reached a plateau after 100–150 years, tree diversity peaked between 30 and 70 years. Tropical forests are converted at an alarming rate for agricultural use and pastureland, but also regrow naturally through secondary succession. For successful forest restoration, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of secondary succession. These mechanisms may vary across forest types, but analyses across broad spatial scales are lacking. Here, we analyse forest recovery using 1,403 plots that differ in age since agricultural abandonment from 50 sites across the Neotropics. We analyse changes in community composition using species-specific stem wood density (WD), which is a key trait for plant growth, survival and forest carbon storage. In wet forest, succession proceeds from low towards high community WD (acquisitive towards conservative trait values), in line with standard successional theory. However, in dry forest, succession proceeds from high towards low community WD (conservative towards acquisitive trait values), probably because high WD reflects drought tolerance in harsh early successional environments. Dry season intensity drives WD recovery by influencing the start and trajectory of succession, resulting in convergence of the community WD over time as vegetation cover builds up. These ecological insights can be used to improve species selection for reforestation. Reforestation species selected to establish a first protective canopy layer should, among other criteria, ideally have a similar WD to the early successional communities that dominate under the prevailing macroclimatic conditions.

Ambitious pledges to restore over 400 million hectares of degraded lands by 2030 have been made by several countries within the Global Partnership for Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR). Monitoring restoration outcomes at this scale requires cost-effective methods to quantify not only forest cover, but also forest structure and the diversity of useful species. Here we obtain and analyze structural attributes of forest canopies undergoing restoration in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil using a portable ground lidar remote sensing device as a proxy for airborne laser scanners. We assess the ability of these attributes to distinguish forest cover types, to estimate aboveground dry woody biomass (AGB) and to estimate tree species diversity (Shannon index and richness). A set of six canopy structure attributes were able to classify five cover types with an overall accuracy of 75%, increasing to 87% when combining two secondary forest classes. Canopy height and the unprecedented “leaf area height volume” (a cumulative product of canopy height and vegetation density) were good predictors of AGB. An index based on the height and evenness of the leaf area density profile was weakly related to the Shannon Index of tree species diversity and showed no relationship to species richness or to change in species composition. These findings illustrate the potential and limitations of lidar remote sensing for monitoring compliance of FLR goals of landscape multifunctionality, beyond a simple assessment of forest cover gain and loss.

Natural regeneration of forests has significantly led to increased native forest cover in some regions. Several studies have explored the spatial drivers of forest cover increase, yet little is known about their effects on forest structure and species richness and diversity. We quantified the effects of local (forest age, remnant Eucalyptus basal area, slope, soil fertility, and clay content) and landscape drivers (surrounding land use, distance from streams, and surrounding forest cover and its change over time) on the aboveground biomass, species density, and phylogenetic diversity of native trees in second-growth forests. We sampled 44 naturally regenerating forests established on former pastures and abandoned Eucalyptus plantations for 11–46 years in agricultural landscapes of the southeastern Atlantic Forest, Brazil. We used generalized linear mixed effect models to quantify the effect drivers on forest attributes. While only Eucalyptus basal area and proximity to sugarcane plantations had a consistent negative effect on forest biomass, other drivers were among the best models to explain forest attributes, but their effect was variable. Age increased tree biomass but the effect was not consistent. Similarly, species richness and phylogenetic diversity were mainly affected by landscape drivers such as surrounding forest cover. In tropical agricultural landscapes, effective forest recovery requires more than just time, as forest age can be less important in determining forest attributes than human land uses and surrounding native forest cover. Crucially, forest recovery can be improved through interventions and policies that promote less impactful human activities and enhance existing forest cover. Knowing which restoration approach provides the best returns on investment for accumulating carbon is essential to foster restoration planning, financing, and implementation. We assessed the recovery of carbon stocks, implementation and land opportunity costs of forests established by natural regeneration and high-diversity native tree plantations. Our study was based on chronosequences (10-60 yr) of 12 naturally regenerating forests, 13 restoration plantations, and 5 reference forests located in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. Restoration plantations accumulated approximately 50% more above-ground carbon than regenerating forests throughout the chronosequence. When controlling for soil clay content, soil carbon stocks were higher in reference than in restored forests, but they were comparable between plantations and regenerating forests. After 60 years of stand development, recovery of total carbon stocks in both restoration management types reached only half of the average stocks of reference forests. Total cost-effectiveness for carbon accumulation, including both implementation and land opportunity costs, was on average 60% higher for regenerating forests than for plantations (15.1 kgC.US$-1 and 9.4 kgC.US$-1, respectively). Both restoration management types had cost-effectiveness for carbon accumulation markedly lower than the price of carbon credits considered, so some voluntary forest carbon markets are not adequately priced to support restoration derived offsets. Although tree plantations initially had higher rates of carbon storage than regenerating forests, their higher implementation and land opportunity costs make them less cost-effective for carbon farming. Our results further suggest that carbon markets alone have a limited potential to up-scale restoration efforts in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.

One-third of all Neotropical forests are secondary forests that regrow naturally after agricultural use through secondary succession. We need to understand better how and why succession varies across environmental gradients and broad geographic scales. Here, we analyze functional recovery using community data on seven plant characteristics (traits) of 1,016 forest plots from 30 chronosequence sites across the Neotropics. By analyzing communities in terms of their traits, we enhance understanding of the mechanisms of succession, assess ecosystem recovery, and use these insights to propose successful forest restoration strategies. Wet and dry forests diverged markedly for several traits that increase growth rate in wet forests but come at the expense of reduced drought tolerance, delay, or avoidance, which is important in seasonally dry forests. Dry and wet forests showed different successional pathways for several traits. In dry forests, species turnover is driven by drought tolerance traits that are important early in succession and in wet forests by shade tolerance traits that are important later in succession. In both forests, deciduous and compound-leaved trees decreased with forest age, probably because microclimatic conditions became less hot and dry. Our results suggest that climatic water availability drives functional recovery by influencing the start and trajectory of succession, resulting in a convergence of community trait values with forest age when vegetation cover builds up. Within plots, the range in functional trait values increased with age. Based on the observed successional trait changes, we indicate the consequences for carbon and nutrient cycling and propose an ecologically sound strategy to improve forest restoration success.

Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest. Soil phosphorus (P) is a major driver of forest development and a critically limited nutrient in tropical soils, especially when topsoil is removed by mining. This nutrient can be present in soils in the form of different fractions, which have direct consequences for P availability to plants and, consequently, for restoration success. Therefore, understanding how the stocks of different soil P fractions change over the restoration process can be essential for guiding restoration interventions, monitoring, and adaptive management. Here, we investigated the recovery of soil P fractions by forest restoration interventions on bauxite mine sites in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We assessed the concentration of different fractions of soil organic and inorganic P at (1) a bauxite mine prepared for restoration; (2) two former bauxite mines undergoing forest restoration for 6 and 24 years; and (3) an old‐growth forest remnant. Overall, restored areas recovered levels of labile organic P (Pₒ‐NaHCO₃) at 5–40 cm and of moderately labile organic P (Pₒ‐NaOH) at different depths, exhibiting concentrations similar to those found in a conserved forest. The use of P‐rich fertilizers and forest topsoil may have greatly contributed to this outcome. Some other fractions, however, recovered only after 24 years of restoration. Other inorganic P fractions did not differ among mined, restored, and conserved sites: nonlabile Pᵢ (residual P and P‐HCl), labile Pᵢ (Pᵢ‐NaHCO₃), and moderately labile Pᵢ (Pᵢ‐NaOH). Forest restoration was able to promote efficient recovery of important soil P fractions, highlighting the value of restoration efforts to mitigate soil degradation by mining.

Uma grande parte das florestas secundárias ao redor do mundo é resultado da regeneração natural de áreas agrícolas abandonadas, localizadas em paisagens altamente modificadas pelo homem. O conhecimento sobre a composição funcional dessas florestas ainda é escasso, sendo urgentes pesquisas que contribuem para esse entendimento, pois os atributos funcionais das plantas são condutores da dinâmica florestal e, portanto, importantes para a manutenção da biodiversidade e dos serviços ecossistêmicos. Nesse contexto, escolhemos como modelo uma bacia hidrográfica no sudeste do Brasil, com matriz agrícola e florestas sob diferentes condições ambientais, para responder a duas perguntas: 1) Como fatores temporais, locais e de paisagem afetam a composição funcional de florestas secundárias (regenerando sob plantios de eucalipto e pastos abandonados) em paisagens agrícolas e 2) Como se comportam as diversidades taxonômica e funcional em tipos florestais com diferentes históricos de vida (florestas remanescentes conservadas, florestas remanescentes degradadas, florestas secundárias regenerando sob plantios de eucalipto abandonados e florestas secundárias regenerando sob pastos abandonados). Para responder as duas perguntas utilizamos o valor médio por espécie de dados primários (área foliar, área foliar específica, conteúdo de matéria seca da folha e espessura da folha) e secundários (densidade da madeira). A partir disso, usamos modelos generalizados mistos, média ponderada pela comunidade para cada atributo funcional e três índices de diversidade funcional para responder a primeira pergunta e testes de dissimilaridade para responder a segunda. Ao todo foram avaliadas 59 parcelas, 43 de florestas secundárias, 10 de florestas remanescentes degradadas e seis de florestas remanescentes conservadas, totalizando 6.089 indivíduos levantados e 284 espécies identificadas. Concluímos que 1) área foliar, área foliar específica e riqueza funcional de florestas secundárias são afetadas, ao mesmo tempo e de formas diferentes, por idade, declividade, teor de argila do solo, área basal de eucaliptos, cobertura florestal média, diferença na cobertura florestal e proximidade com cana- de-açúcar; e 2) florestas secundárias tendem a ter maior riqueza funcional e taxonômica que florestas conservadas, sendo que dentro dos tipos florestais existe uma diversidade beta taxonômica maior que a funcional, com comunidades apresentando, em geral, espécies abundantes diferentes com atributos funcionais similares. Nossos resultados demonstram que as florestas secundárias são afetadas tanto por fatores naturais quanto por fatores antrópicos, os quais devem ser levados em consideração tanto em pesquisas que visam compreender os condutores da regeneração natural quanto em projetos que visam utilizar esse processo como estratégia para conservar a biodiversidade e prover serviços ecossistêmicos. Adicionalmente, demonstramos que florestas remanescentes degradadas e secundárias são importantes fontes de biodiversidade e, portanto, potenciais provedoras de serviços ecossistêmicos Large part of the secondary forests across the world is the result of the natural regeneration in abandoned agricultural areas located in landscapes highly human-modified. Knowledge about the functional composition of these forests is still scarce, and research contributing to this understanding results urgent since the functional traits may be important drivers of the forest ecological dynamics and therefore are important for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem services the forest provides. In this context, we chose as a study case a watershed in the Atlantic Forest in Southeastern Brazil, with an agricultural matrix and patches of secondary forests regenerating under different environmental conditions, to answer the following two questions: 1) How temporal, local and landscape factors affect the functional composition of secondary forests regenerating in Eucalyptus plantations and abandoned pastures and (2) how taxonomic and functional diversity behave in forest types under different land-use histories (i.e. conserved remnant forest, degraded remnant forest, secondary forests regenerating in abandoned Eucalyptus plantations and secondary forests regenerating in abandoned pastures). In order to answer the two questions we used the mean value per species of primary data (leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content and leaf thickness) and secondary data (wood density). We use mixed generalized models, the community weighted mean with species mean traits and three diversity indexes to answer the first question and dissimilarity tests to answer the second question. Overall, 59 plots were evaluated, including 43 secondary forests, 10 degraded remnant forests and 6 conserved remnant forest, where we registered totaling total of 6.089 individuals and 284 species. We conclude that: 1) leaf area, specific leaf area and functional richness of secondary forests is affected, at the same time and in different ways, by age, slope, soil clay content, basal area of Eucalyptus, average native forest cover , difference in surrounding native forest cover and proximity to sugarcane plantations; and 2) secondary forests tend to have higher functional and taxonomic richness than conserved forests, and within the forest types taxonomic beta diversity results higher than functional, with communities presenting, in general, different abundant species with similar functional traits. Our results demonstrate that secondary forests are affected by both natural and anthropogenic factors, which should be taken into account both in research aimed at understanding the drivers of natural regeneration and in projects that use this process as a strategy to conserve biodiversity and provide ecosystem services. In addition, we show that degraded remnants and secondary forests are important sources of biodiversity and therefore potential providers of ecosystem services.

The nutrient demands of regrowing tropical forests are partly satisfied by nitrogen-fixing legume trees, but our understanding of the abundance of those species is biased towards wet tropical regions. Here we show how the abundance of Leguminosae is affected by both recovery from disturbance and large-scale rainfall gradients through a synthesis of forest inventory plots from a network of 42 Neotropical forest chronosequences. During the first three decades of natural forest regeneration, legume basal area is twice as high in dry compared with wet secondary forests. The tremendous ecological success of legumes in recently disturbed, water-limited forests is likely to be related to both their reduced leaflet size and ability to fix N2, which together enhance legume drought tolerance and water-use efficiency. Earth system models should incorporate these large-scale successional and climatic patterns of legume dominance to provide more accurate estimates of the maximum potential for natural nitrogen fixation across tropical forests.

Mixed tree plantings and natural regeneration are the main restoration approaches for recovering tropical forests worldwide. Despite substantial differences in implementation costs between these methods, little is known regarding how they differ in terms of ecological outcomes, which is key information for guiding decision making and cost-effective restoration planning. Here, we compared the early ecological outcomes of natural regeneration and tree plantations for restoring the Brazilian Atlantic Forest in agricultural landscapes. We assessed and compared vegetation structure and composition in young (7-20 yr old) mixed tree plantings (PL), second-growth tropical forests established on former pastures (SGp), on former Eucalyptus spp. plantations (SGe), and in old-growth reference forests (Ref). We sampled trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) 1-5 cm (saplings) and trees at DBH > 5 cm (trees) in a total of 32 20 × 45 m plots established in these landscapes. Overall, the ecological outcomes of natural regeneration and restoration plantations were markedly different. SGe forests showed higher abundance of large (DBH > 20 cm) nonnative species, of which 98% were resprouting Eucalyptus trees, than SGp and PL, and higher total aboveground biomass; however, aboveground biomass of native species was higher in PL than in SGe. PL forests had lower abundance of native saplings and lianas than both naturally established second-growth forests, and lower proportion of animal dispersed saplings than SGe, probably due to higher isolation from native forest remnants. Rarefied species richness of trees was lower in SGp, intermediate in SGe and Ref and higher in PL, whereas rarefied species richness of saplings was higher in SG than in Ref. Species composition differed considerably among regeneration types. Although these forests are inevitably bound to specific landscape contexts and may present varying outcomes as they develop through longer time frames, the ecological particularities of forests established through different restoration approaches indicate that naturally established forests may not show similar outcomes to mixed tree plantings. The results of this study underscore the importance that restoration decisions need to be based on more robust expectations of outcomes that allow for a better analysis of the cost-effectiveness of different restoration approaches before scaling-up forest restoration in the tropics.

The locus coeruleus (LC) is a noradrenergic nucleus that plays an important role in the ventilatory response to hypercapnia. This nucleus is densely innervated by serotonergic fibers and contains high density of serotonin (5-HT) receptors, including 5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(2). We assessed the possible modulation of respiratory response to hypercapnia by 5-HT, through 5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(2) receptors, in the LC. To this end, we determined the concentrations of 5-HT and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA) in the LC after hypercapnic exposure. Pulmonary ventilation (VE: , plethysmograph) was measured before and after unilateral microinjection (100 nL) of WAY-100635 (5-HT(1A) antagonist, 5.6 and 56 mM), 8-OHDPAT (5-HT(1A/7) agonist, 7 and 15 mM), Ketanserin (5-HT(2A) antagonist, 3.7 and 37 mM), or (+/-)-2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetaminehydrochloride (DOI; 5-HT(2A) agonist, 6.7 and 67 mM) into the LC, followed by a 60-min period of 7% CO(2) exposure. Hypercapnia increased 5-HTIAA levels and 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio within the LC. WAY-100635 and 8-OHDPAT intra-LC decreased the hypercapnic ventilatory response due to a lower tidal volume. Ketanserin increased CO(2) drive to breathing and DOI caused the opposite response, both acting on tidal volume. The current results provide evidence of increased 5-HT release during hypercapnia in the LC and that 5-HT presents an inhibitory modulation of the stimulatory role of LC on hypercapnic ventilatory response, acting through postsynaptic 5-HT(2A) receptors in this nucleus. In addition, hypercapnic responses seem to be also regulated by presynaptic 5-HT(1A) receptors in the LC.

We present a list of vascular plants found in Legado das Águas, Reserva Votorantim, a private reserve having an area of approximately 35,000 ha that spans the municipalities of Tapiraí, Miracatú, and Juquiá, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The reserve is part of a complex of state-protected areas including Alto Ribeira Touristic State Park, Intervales State Park , Carlos Botelho State Park, Jurupará State Park, and Serra do Mar State Park. Together, these form an important and large area of continuous and well-preserved forest. Our study, which involved two main floristic surveys in March/April 2013 and April 2014, recorded 768 species, representing 131 families and 432 genera. The majority of species were angiosperms (619) representing 106 families and 370 genera. There were also two species of gymnosperms belonging to two genera in separate families; 147 species of ferns and lycophytes belonging to 23 families and 60 genera. In demonstrating the presence of almost 800 species of plants, of which 16 are threatened, our study highlights the importance of floristic surveys and the critical role of private protected areas in managing and preserving native flora.

A mineração modifica profundamente os ecossistemas naturais e, embora a recuperação dessas áreas seja exigida pela legislação, trata-se ainda de um grande desafio técnico. Geralmente, as estratégias de recuperação envolvem a distribuição de solo florestal superficial, a semeadura de gramíneas exóticas para cobrir o solo, chamada de \"tapete verde\", e o plantio de mudas de árvores exóticas e/ou nativas. No entanto, a semeadura de gramíneas exóticas pode restringir a regeneração de espécies nativas, sendo a avaliação da sua viabilidade ecológica necessária para determinar sua real necessidade. Nesse contexto, o objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar se é necessário o uso de gramíneas exóticas para o recobrimento inicial do solo na recuperação de florestas tropicais em áreas de mineração de bauxita, bem como se a trajetória ecológica gerada apresenta potencial de retorno às condições pré-distúrbio. Sendo assim, utilizamos um estudo de caso de recuperação de minas de exploração de bauxita na Mata Atlântica do Brasil na região de Poços de Caldas-MG, na qual foram comparadas cronossequências de dois métodos de restauração de minas de bauxita - restauração florestal sem tapete verde (Rs) e restauração florestal com tapete verde (Rc) - tendo-se trechos de floresta nativa como ecossistema de referência. Foram avaliados dados de estrutura (cobertura de gramínea, cobertura de dossel, área basal, densidade de indivíduos com DAP ≥ 1 cm e altura ≥130 cm - classe 1 - e densidade de indivíduos com DAP < 1 cm e altura ≥ 50 cm - classe 2) e composição (riqueza, diversidade, equabilidade, riqueza e porcentagem de espécies por síndrome de dispersão). A definição da trajetória ecológica foi realizada por meio de regressões lineares. O método de restauração florestal sem tapete verde alcançou resultados superiores ao método Rc em parâmetros importantes para o estabelecimento da floresta, como cobertura de gramíneas, cobertura de dossel, riqueza e diversidade da classe 1. O método Rs também teve resultados semelhantes à Rc em vários parâmetros, apesar da idade inferior. Os dois métodos apresentaram tendências de evolução em direção aos parâmetros do ecossistema de referência, porém o método Rs, se mantiver a trajetória atual, pode alcançá-los mais rapidamente, o que reduz gastos com manutenção e manejo. Tais evidências mostram que o uso de gramíneas exóticas para recobrimento inicial de áreas mineradas não é necessário em projetos que visem à restauração florestal de áreas de mineração, pois essas prejudicam o restabelecimento da dinâmica florestal. Adicionalmente, mostrou-se ser possível recuperar áreas mineradas de bauxita com metas ecológicas mais ambiciosas, que visem o retorno de condições similares às existentes pré-distúrbio. Mining profoundly alters natural ecosystems and, although the recovery of these areas is required by law, it is still a major technical challenge. Generally, recovery strategies involve the distribution of surface forest soil, planting of exotic grasses to cover the ground and the planting of exotic and/or native trees. However, the sowing of exotic grasses may restrict native species regeneration, therefore, context specific diagnosis must be carried out to determine the actual need of using such technique. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether the use of exotic grasses for initial soil covering in the recovery of tropical forests in areas of bauxite mining is necessary, as well as if the restored community has potential to return to the pre-disturbance conditions. Therefore, we use a case study of recovery of bauxite exploration in the Atlantic Forest region of Brazil in Pocos de Caldas, Minas Gerais, where chronosequences of two methods of restoration of bauxite mines were compared - restoration without exotic grasses (Rs) and forest restoration with exotic grasses (Rc) - taking up stretches of native forest ecosystem as a reference. We collected data on tree community structure (grass cover, canopy cover, basal area, and density of individuals CBH ≥3.1 cm and height ≥ 130 cm (1 class) and density of individuals DAP < 3.1 cm and height ≥ 50 cm (class 2) and composition (richness, diversity, evenness and richness and percentage of species by dispersion syndrome). The successional path was analyzed by linear regression. In class 1, the method of forest restoration without exotic grasses (Rs) achieved better results than Rc in key parameters for forest establishment, such as exotic grass cover, canopy cover, richness and diversity. The Rs method also had similar results to Rc in several parameters, despite being represented by younger communities. Both methods showed trends toward the parameters values found in reference ecosystem, but Rs method, if it remain the current way, can reach these values more quickly, which reduces maintenance costs and management. Such evidence shows that the use of exotic grasses for initial covering of mined areas is not necessary in projects aimed at forest restoration of mining areas, as these hinder the restoration of forest dynamics. Additionally, we proved to be possible to recover the bauxite mined areas with more ambitious ecological goals, aiming at the return of pre-disturbance conditions.

Com a constatação de que a influência das ações antrópicas tem ocasionado consequências nocivas ao ambiente, iniciou-se uma série de compromissos mundiais, intergovernamentais e interinstitucionais, a fim de minimizar esses impactos ambientais. Uma das propostas estabelecidas nesses compromissos refere-se à educação ambiental, já que esta permite que o indivíduo e a coletividade se conscientizem e construam valores sociais, conhecimentos, atitudes e mudanças de hábitos, visando interagir de forma sustentável com o ambiente. Nesta perspectiva, este estudo focado em jovens do Ensino Médio teve como objetivos verificar os hábitos de leitura e os gêneros preferidos, bem como a presença ou ausência de conceitos, além de analisar os erros conceituais cometidos pelos mesmos, relativos à temática do “aquecimento global”. A partir destas observações, pretendeu-se produzir uma história em quadrinhos referente ao tema “aquecimento global”, focalizando os processos e técnicas relativas à mitigação de seus impactos, propondo, desta forma, oferecer um recurso didático-pedagógico lúdico, atrativo e divertido, podendo tornar-se uma ferramenta eficiente para o processo de educação ambiental, na expectativa de que este venha influenciar de forma positiva a leitura e a aprendizagem desses indivíduos.
